How does this 2004 film, based on the book of the same title, portray the importance of High School football in the life of the town of Odessa Texas? How does the film contrast with the book, and what choices were made as to what to emphasize in the film, and why were those choices made? Why does the film downplay racial elements? How does the case of half-back Boobie Miles illustrate the tragedy of ‘placing all of one's eggs in one basket'? Why do Boobie and his uncle downplay the nature of his knee injury? How do the recruiting practices of major universities that are courting Miles illustrate Kantian ethical principles with regard to using people as ‘mere means' to their ends? How do the town influencers mirror this behavior with regard to balancing football's power to drive Civic pride, and the academic well-being of student athletes? Does toleration of criminal behavior in the Carter football team illustrate this same principle? How have things evolved with regard to college players licensing of their likenesses? Should colleges treat their football teams more in line with practices in minor leagues of other sports, sponsoring teams, claiming naming rights, and providing salaries for players? We see this sort of arrangement in minor league hockey and basketball. Such a practice would no longer require players on sponsored teams to be students. Would this be a better arrangement, all things considered?
Tonight we go back to 1961 and discuss the death of Betty Williams. Betty Williams was a high school senior living a life of turmoil. It was hard for Betty to be the wild and outgoing teenager she wanted to be with strict parents at home. She falls in love with a popular Odessa high football player, Mack Herring. After dating for a few months, he breaks it off with Betty. She is distraught about the break up, and this seems to put her over the edge. She tells friends, it's time for her to see what Heaven is really like after we die. Mack Herring takes the life of Betty, but he will later produce proof that it was her wish to take her last breath. Thank you Silver Spur Winery for sharing your wine with us! It's Thursday, December 22nd, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed 40 Christians last week Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed 40 people in a Christian-majority part of northern Nigeria over the last week. In one attack, Pastor Yusuf Gan of the Evangelical Church Winning All, was severely beaten in front of his family. His wife and children were then abducted. Christian Solidarity Worldwide President Mervyn Thomas said, “These renewed attacks are occurring in the run up to the Christmas holidays, raising concerns of a possible campaign to disrupt the festive season in this predominantly Christian area.” British pro-life leader arrested for praying outside abortion mill British police arrested Isabel Vaughn-Spruce, the director of March for Life UK, last Thursday for praying silently outside an abortion mill. The thought-police received a tip-off from a bystander concerned that the pro-life activist might be praying in her mind. Local authorities have established censorship zones around abortion mills to keep pro-lifers away. Police also banned Vaughn-Spruce from praying publicly beyond the censorship zone. She said, “It's abhorrently wrong that I was searched, arrested, interrogated by police and charged simply for praying in the privacy of my own mind.” In Psalm 94:20-21, the Psalmist asks, “Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with [the Lord]? They gather together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.” Ukrainian President addresses Congress Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Joe Biden at the White House yesterday. In his first trip outside Ukraine since Russia invaded in February, Zelenskyy addressed Congress. ZELENSKYY: “Against all odds, and doom and gloom, the Ukraine didn't fall. Ukraine is alive and kicking. (applause)We have no fear. Nor should anyone in the world have it. “Ukraine gained this victory, and it gives us courage which inspires the entire world. Europe is now stronger and more independent than ever. The Russian tyranny has lost control over us.” U.S. Congress set to fund $45 billion more of aid to Ukraine Lawmakers included a $45 billion package for Ukraine aid in a must-pass $1.7 trillion government funding bill, reports ABC News. Congress has until midnight Friday to pass the bill and avoid a shutdown. Just prior to Zelenskyy's visit, the U.S. confirmed it would send its famed Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine. Ukraine vs. Russian Orthodox priests in country Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials are cracking down on Orthodox Churches in the country that have ties to Russia. Ukraine's Security Council recently seized the assets of seven senior Orthodox clerics and placed them under a travel ban. Odessa Texas next sanctuary for the unborn Odessa, Texas is the sixty-second city in the U.S. to become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn. Last Tuesday, the city council voted 6-1 in favor of a Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance. Mayor Javier Joven welcomed the vote after working for two years to get the measure passed. Councilman Steve Thompson was the lone vote against protecting the babies. To politely register your objection with Councilman Thompson's vote you can email him at sthompson@odessa-tx.gov or call 432-335-3276. The ordinance bans the killing of unborn babies as well as abortion-inducing drugs within the city limits. The measure prohibits performing abortions on Odessa residents regardless of where it would happen. And the city cannot enter into contracts with organizations that fund abortion. Romans 13:3 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.” Elon Musk to step down as CEO Tech billionaire Elon Musk will be stepping down from CEO at Twitter after asking users on Sunday. Fifty-seven percent voted for Musk to step down in the Twitter poll. Musk still owns the company, but said he will find someone else to become CEO. Twitter reveals FBI paid millions to suppress anti-Democrat tweets Meanwhile, Musk continues to release disturbing internal Twitter documents, exposing how the company operated before he bought it. The latest Twitter files show the FBI paid $3.4 million to the social media company to suppress negative tweets about Joe Biden and the Democrats. Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the Incoming House Oversight Committee Chairman, told CBN News that investigating the situation will be a top priority for Republicans. COMER: “Anyone that cares about free speech should be outraged. Whether you're Republican or Democrat, this has to stop. This is going to be a top priority for the Republican majority in January.” Home sales down 35% U.S. homes sales were down 7% in November compared with October. They're down 35% compared with a year ago. It's the tenth consecutive month of home sale declines. However, median home sale prices have increased 3.5% to $370,700 compared to last year. Homeschoolers score higher And finally, analysis by Houston Christian University professor Lisa Treleaven found homeschool students score better than their peers on the Classic Learning Test. The standardized college entrance exam is grounded in the liberal arts tradition and uses classic texts as opposed to the contemporary writings used in SAT and ACT tests. Homeschool students earned mean scores of 78. Private school and charter school students scored lower at 75 and 73 respectively. Public school students scored the lowest at 66. Treleaven noted, “This is consistent with prior research findings of superior academic performance of homeschool students as compared to other school types.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, December 22nd in the year of our Lord 2022. When she comes up missing, there's quite a few people who have an idea of what happened, but the truth is incredibly shocking, and disturbing!!Along the way, we find out that people sometimes speak in a confusing way in west Texas, that dry humping your cousin isn't a proper Christmas activity, and that you can't prepare for something you didn't mean to do!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Seventeen year old Betty Williams goes missing from her bedroom sometime during the night. At first investigators don't believe there's any reason to worry, it's not uncommon for seventeen year old's to sneak out or run off for a few hours. As a matter of procedure, an investigator heads to Odessa High School to find out if anyone knew where Betty was. They could have never imagined what happened next. John Mack Herring, a popular football player at the school, and Betty's ex-boyfriend, makes a shocking confession. He killed Betty the night before and hid her body beneath the muddy waters of a rural stock pond. When detectives ask why, Herring simply replies "Because she asked me to."Herring explained that Betty had begged him to end her life, saying she was miserable and wanted to escape from this world. In Herring's own words, moments before firing the fatal shot, he asked for a kiss to remember her by, and Betty obliged. The media christened the crime "The Kiss and Kill Murder."The town rallies behind the good looking and smart Mack Herring, a boy from the right side of the tracks from a good family while they demonize Betty, a harlot who seduced a tender teen into committing a hideous and violent act. Even in death, Betty Williams was blamed for the horrible crime committed against her.FB: https://www.facebook.com/TraceEvidencePod/IG: https://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/TW: https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodVisit https://www.trace-evidence.com for more information, case photos, contact information and more.Merch: https://traceevidence.threadless.com/ Music Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Renowned photographer and frequent National Geographic contributor Robert Clark joins the podcast to talk about growing up in Hays Kansas and his early love of sports photography that would create a young determined photographer working his way through multiple newspapers on the way to an extremely storied career. During our conversation Robert talks about how the opportunity to shoot a story on a high school football team in Odessa Texas early on in his career would end up becoming the best selling book by Buzz Bissinger titled Friday Night Lights and help him on his way to creating a name for himself. After moving to New York to pursue a better understanding of lighting and studio work, Robert began to find his place in the industry, working with everyone from Vanity Fair and Time to his long relationship with the Geographic. Known for his versatility in shooting everything from beautiful still life imagery to photojournalistic storytelling, Robert has gone on to shoot over 50 stories for National Geographic, more magazine covers than you could keep track of, and continues to be inspired by not only his contemporaries, but the young talent he sees coming up. This is an oral history of the Lord's move in Plainview Texas, in the early 1960s. The following is a testimony from Francis Ball. He touched the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee as a minister in Odessa Texas in 1964, nearly the same time as those in Plainview. He would later move to Los Angeles for the church life, serve with Living Stream, and become a faithful co-worker in the Lord's recovery.
The HootBoard Visitor Information and Destination Marketing Podcast
Mary Rains joined the HootBoard Visitor Information and Destination Marketing podcast to share her experience at the Odessa Texas DMO. Each area has its own sets of needs and challenges and Odessa Texas is no different! Mary has some nice words to say about our interactive touch screen kiosks, and expanded on how it helps the area. Odessa Texas is primarily a worker destination, so we discussed tips and tricks on engaging that audience, understanding their needs, and Mary shared her knowledge of the Odessa Texas area. It was a great interview, and we definitely covered a lot of useful ground.
Two great stories from the old west! 1) THE LEGEND OF THE LOST SUBLETT MINE They thought Old Ben Sublett was crazy when he rolled into the town of Odessa Texas and persisted in saying that one day he would come back from his weeks of prospecting in the Guadalupes with a wagon full of gold. Those mountains were full of Apaches and rattlesnakes- but not gold. They had no idea that Old Ben had been a Texas Ranger and won medals fighting for the Confederacy.- and when he said he could do something he was more than talk. 2) THE BLACK SEMINOLE SCOUTS OF TEXAS- Their people had been driven out of Florida to a barren wasteland in the Midwest, then cheated out of what they were promised. Mexico offered them land and freedom if they would just fight Apaches and Comanches who were raiding across the US border- so they migrated to Mexico. But politics changed, and Mexico didn't keep their promises either.. Finally, the US Army offered more promises- join us as Indian scouts and you'll get property, pay, and your families will be fed. After four them won the Medal of Honor for valor they still found themselves fighting for what they had been promised, but no one would ever question their bravery. In this listener request episode, Heather is joined by Julie Ortega from the Women Behind the Veil Podcast to discuss a serial killer from Odessa, Texas. Our listener, Sal from Texas has requested this case and I'm glad that we now know about this sicko! Michael Eugene Sharp was classified as a murderer who kidnapped and raped his victims first. He had at least 2 confirmed victims but suspected of more. At the age of 28, he killed a mother (31-year-old Brenda Kay Broadway) and her 8-year-old daughter (Christy Elms). He kidnapped Brenda's 14-year-old daughter as well, but she was able to escape; which led to his arrest just 5 days later. Michael was executed by lethal injection in Texas on November 19, 1997 (at 43 years old) and 14-year-old Selena Elms attended his execution.Check out and Subscribe - Women Behind the Veil Podcast Sourceshttps://www.odessa-tx.gov/residents/august-31-2019-mass-shooting http://worldpopulationreview.com/us-cities/odessa-population/ https://datausa.io/profile/geo/odessa-tx-metro-area https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/tx/odessa/crime https://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-5th-circuit/1229773.htmlhttps://www.oaoa.com/news/local/article_d28066fa-cb04-11e8-8f71-074b13149a61.html https://www.oaoa.com/article_256f07d9-762c-50f7-93c2-c0cd11f43768.html

WATER IS ‘COMMON' ON ALIEN WORLDS, SCIENTISTS SAY IN FINDING THAT COULD TRANSFORM SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/alien-planet-water-extraterrestrial-life-exoplanet-space-a9241811.html Water is "common" on alien worlds, scientists have found in a study that could change our understanding of how planets form and where we might find alien life. The discovery comes from the most extensive survey of the chemical compositions of planets ever conducted, and challenges our search for water in our own solar system and elsewhere. Water is thought to be a key component of extraterrestrial life, and so finding it elsewhere in the universe is likely to be central to discovering whether aliens exist elsewhere in the universe. The researchers used data from 19 exoplanets to get detailed measurements of the chemical and thermal properties of exoplanets. They looked at a wide variety of different worlds, from relatively small "mini-Neptunes" only 10 times bigger than our Earth to "super-Jupiters" that are as big as 600 of our own planet, and from places that are between 20C and 2000C. They found that water was "common" across many of those exoplanets. But they also discovered that there was less of it on those planets than expected, and there was great variety between the different kinds of worlds. Using data from a huge array of different telescopes, both in space and on the ground, the researchers found that water vapour was present in 14 of th 19 planets, and that there was also an abundance of sodium and potassium in six planets. The new data gives us a detailed understanding of exoplanets that we don't even have of our nearest neighbours, scientists said. "Measuring the abundances of these chemicals in exoplanetary atmospheres is something extraordinary, considering that we have not been able to do the same for giant planets in our solar system yet, including Jupiter, our nearest gas giant neighbour," said Luis Welbanks, lead author of the study and PhD student at the Institute of Astronomy. The Odessa Radio Tower UFO Incident Link: https://www.ufoinsight.com/the-odessa-radio-tower-ufo-incident/ A sighting of a UFO over a radio tower for around an hour in Odessa, Texas in the summer of 1973 is a case that, according to many UFO researchers who have since examined it, should have a greater standing in the UFO history books. Not least due to the multiple different witness testimonies concerning the incident. In fact, the incident was largely unreported until the early-2000s with the arrival of the Internet when the main witness along with several others (who were members of the same family) would report the incident to UFO investigators. On the evening of 7th July 1973, a little after 6 pm in the evening, Stanley Wilson was napping at his home following a particularly grueling day at work with the state highway department. As he was dozing the phone rang in the Wilson household. Stanley's wife, Judy answered. It was her husband's grandmother. Several moments later, Judy was waking her husband and asking him to go outside with her. According to his grandmother, who also lived in Odessa in the southern part of the city, “a UFO was heading their way”. Stanley and Judy both looked at each other, and then back at the hovering craft in amazement. He would recall how they “both knew it was probably an alien ship”. As they were both watching the futuristic craft hovering in the air, Stanley's sister, Georgia, and her husband, Jim's car came “flying around the corner”. As they jumped out yells of “did you see it?” punched the air as they both rushed toward Stanley and Judy. All four of them stood and looked up and mysterious craft as it hovered over the KBZB radio tower. As the four of them stood in the yard of the Wilsons' home, Stanley suddenly had the idea of tuning into the radio station. When they did so, the disc jockey remarked how “a UFO above the station was causing static”. At one point, Stanley would even call into the station, informing the disc jockey that they were watching the UFO that he was talking about. When he got through to the radio station again, he claimed to have spoken to the disc jockey, off-air. He claimed that a “government request” was made that they instantly stop their reporting of the UFO or they would “lose their (broadcasting) license”. Green Team Academy Podcast with Joan Gregerson: Episode 57 Tune in to hear my interview with second-grade teacher Anese Forsyth. Learn how Anese started recycling in her 2nd grade bilingual classroom in Reagan Elementary and how it soon spread to become a resource for the entire community. Visit Green Team Academy for complete show notes and resource links. Meet Anese! Anese attributes her passion for nature to her parents. Anese was raised in Pakistan and in Latin America. "It made us appreciate the world as entire planet and how amazing it is." said Anese. "We're not all that different." Anese has been a teacher for 28 years and previously helped with a garden at her previous school. Anese began working at Reagan Elementary with Ector County Independent School District in Odessa, TX in 2016. Anese teaches in a bilingual second-grade class. The kids in the classroom are Spanish speakers, mostly from rural areas. FREE MASTERCLASS WITH JOAN Saturday 10 am & 3 pm How to Transform Yourself & Our World Before It's Too Late Recycling at Reagan Elementary Anese started by reading books to her kids, including The Lorax and The Wump World. This set the foundation of why it's important to care for the planet. Next, Anese helped her kids start recycling plastic bottles, from their school breakfasts. Anese explained to the kids, "This plastic is from fossil fuels, a natural resource that comes from the ground. We live in the Permian basin. This is why many of your parents have a job. We need to conserve this precious natural resource." She then added recycling of cardboard, paper and aluminum in the classroom. From there, Anese coordinated with her principal, Mr. Wayne Squires, to get approval to expand the recycling program schoolwide. "It's important to have the support of your principal, custodians, teachers and parents." Anese's journey with recycling follows what many teachers do. She started by buying her own bins for her classroom. From there, she went out and found several partner organizations that each supported the program: Advice for Others Asked what advice she would give to a teacher who want to start something similar in the schools in their community, Anese said, Have a big idea of what you want to do, but start small with your classroom. Change the routine to include recycling, and let the kids cycle through so they all learn how to do it. Be able to motivate people and encourage people. rather than pushing people to do something they don't want to do. Be ready to support them when they're ready to change. Be positive, helpful and patient! Use social media to highlight progress and generate interest. Remind your students that they are leaders, and that they will take care of the planet going forward. Don't give up! Be the light. Be the change. Paul R. is one of the bright spots in AA. A young person I met in 2014 and knew right away he was very special. Once in a while you come across an alcoholic who you can see from across the room is on fire. They are walking around, talking to everyone. Smiling. Laughing. And, you think immediately, I have to meet that one. I had the best feeling about Paul right away. Once I introduced myself, he said he'd heard from someone that he should look to meet me too, because we both were similar. Extroverted. All around happy and of course, both in love with sobriety. This recording came from an invitation I extended to him once he had his 1 year. This was recorded in December 2015. Paul flew from Odessa to Austin just to speak at our Saturday night meeting. Another indication that someone is a great kind of alcoholic. Paul didn't think it was too far, or too much to ask, he just enthusiastically said "yes". On that trip we went to a coffee shop and it was raining out. We couldn't get a parking spot close to the door and we thought we'd sit and chat and hope that the rain would die down so we wouldn't get drenched trying to reach the front door. We ended up speaking for hours in the car talking and watching the rain - watching the rain stop. We never tired of sharing with one another. He was so enthusastic and had so many questions. About identifying a career path - about dating, how did I know I was in love, when would he know he'd found the one? He had quesitons about school, sobriety, and life. Everything. And, he couldn't have exhausted me if he tried. We never did make it into the coffee shop. Paul was killed, suddenly and tragically this last weekend. Our last conversation was a couple of months ago. He apologized over and over for getting "busy". Wrapped up in the job, the girlfriend, life. I never held that against him of course. What good is having a sober life, if we don't live it? He promised he'd visit me this summer and we'd drive with the top down (he loved my Saab convertible, his favorite - regrettably, I don't have that car anymore but promised him the new one was just as much fun). I'm still in shock at his sudden departure from my life, from the fellowship and the confines of this earth. He will always hold a special place in my heart and the hearts of others in the fellowship. He simply was one of a kind. I adored him and so would have you.

The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
In this episode we are pulling back the curtain on the Antiques Roadshow, as well as talking a bit about what to include and not include in your family tree. I'm just back from Odessa Texas where I presented a full day seminar at the Permian Basin Genealogical Society. I got to enjoy a big dose of Texas hospitality and had an absolutely wonderful time. Next up I'm heading to Kelowna British Columbia for the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society Conference where I will be again doing four presentations as well as a Meet the Speakers panel. MAILBOX: Family Tree Magazine Digital Subscriptions from Kathy: “I subscribe to Family Tree Magazine. Can I download my print subscription to my iPad....as you can with other subscriptions? Or do I need to pay for each issue that I download? Family Chart Masters helped me with my Family Tree Chart. It was beautiful and was a hit at our Family Reunion. Janet was so helpful. Thank you for the recommendation. Love your podcasts.” Lisa's Answer: The Family Tree Magazine digital subscription is separate from the print subscription, unless you have purchase their VIP Subscription. So you can either purchase individual digital issues from the Shop Family Tree Store, or you can purchase a separate annual digital subscription. I think they keep it separate because not everyone wants both. Click here for a $10 off coupon for ShopFamilyTree and when you use that link it also supports the free Genealogy Gems Podcast. Thank you! Get Lisa's Book: Mobile Genealogy Replacement for RAOGK From Mary in Iowa: “In Podcast #139, Ricky asked about a successor to the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website. There are actually three Facebook groups (not pages) carrying on the task of looking up genealogy information and other requests. They are RAOGK, RAOGK - USA, and RAOGK - International. You need to be a member of the Facebook group to post a message or request, but most requests for membership are granted quickly.” Scott from Oakland Maine: “I am in need of some advice regarding an un-cooperative family member. My father's brother wants nothing to do with our family, and in years past once referred to himself as the “black sheep”. He has absolutely no interest in genealogy and is not at all willing to be a part of the family story that I am putting together. My question is, how do I reference this character in my tree.” Lisa's Answer: I imagine every family has a tough nut on a branch of the family tree! I'm a firm believer in the truth, and what I would do if it were me is to include basic data (that is publicly available) on him on my private, personal family tree. On trees and other info you make available publicly, (such as an online family tree) I would list him and his immediate family only as "Living" and whether they are male or female. In the end you have to do what seems right for you. From Glenn: “Just wanted to say a quick thanks for both podcasts you produce…I've been interested in the Family History for some time…Recently my interest has arisen again, of course I have made classic mistake in not documenting everything, and just collecting names, dates and so forth. So in the last 6 months I've been citing sources and updating the database. One of the quandaries I have is when do you stop, not so much vertically, but how wide do you go, in relation to cousins, second cousins and families? Probably the main question I have is trying to decide whether to get a subscription to Ancestry.com or not, I feel I'm at that stage where online document will help out, in filling in the leaves on my branches.” Lisa's Answer: Go as wide as you want and are interested in. I would recommend adding basic info for someone you find who you won't be pursuing, so that if down the road you run in to a brick wall and you need to do some cluster research or reverse genealogy, you will have new leads to follow. RE: Ancestry - I think you will find that Ancestry membership is a very cost effective and time saving way to do your research. Mine has been invaluable. See if you can find a 7 day free trial to check it out and confirm they have the kinds of records you need.
