I'm Not Good Enough Where'd That Come From? In this slightly longer Five-Minute Quickie, we're digging into one of the sneakiest, most stubborn beliefs so many of us carry around: "I'm not good enough." Where did it come from? Why does it stick? And how do we uncover what's really underneath it? This FMQ is all about preparing you for the deeper dive coming in the next longer episode, where I'll be guiding you through a process to change this belief for good. But first, we need a seed — a direction — so when we get there, your unconscious mind is already lined up and ready to shift. What We Explore Today How "I'm not good enough" often starts with something very specific. Why a general belief always has a more personal root underneath it. The types of life experiences where this message gets planted. How your unconscious mind tries (clumsily!) to protect you with limiting beliefs. The drum & bass veteran talks about bass music eras, dance culture in America and his new album, Contact. British artist Nicolaas Douwma, AKA Sub Focus, has been steadily putting out big-room drum & bass since the early 2000s. In more recent years, he's become staggeringly popular, releasing a string of Top 40 UK pop hits that have made him synonymous with a more mainstream sound. His influence looms large across a whole generation of young producers, particularly in the US. In this Exchange, Douwma sits down with Resident Advisor editor Gabe Szatan at the beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. They speak about how he hit number one in the US dance music charts last year, as well as how drum & bass moved from being popular with a "secret clique of people" to becoming what, for lack of a better term, could be called "brostep." Will has spent the past two decades perfecting a style that is not beholden to any one particular genre or set of influences, incorporating rock, folk, psych, funk, blues, and melodic pop into a catalogue where the songs always speak for themselves. Over the years, he's performed extensively with Eddie Vedder, played alongside Peter Buck, opened for the Wallflowers, performed multiple times at Farm Aid, and has had many songs placed in TV shows from 90210 to CSI and movies like the animated hit Barnyard.
