In this introduction to the Book of Daniel, we're challenged to live with clarity, conviction, and purpose in an increasingly secular world. The message emphasizes God's sovereignty and faithfulness, even during times of exile and oppression. We're reminded of the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants, highlighting God's unconditional love for His people alongside the importance of obedience. The story of Daniel and his friends serves as a inspiring example of maintaining faith in a hostile culture, teaching us to stand firm in our beliefs while navigating complex societal pressures. This exploration of Daniel invites us to reflect on our own spiritual journey, encouraging us to listen for God's 'still, small voice' amidst the noise of our daily lives and to trust in His divine plan, even when circumstances seem challenging.ChaptersChapter 1: Understanding God's Message in a Noisy World0:00 - 10:00Introduction to the importance of clarity, conviction, and purpose in Christian life, using the analogy of decoding a Morse code message.Chapter 2: The Structure and Significance of the Old Testament10:00 - 20:00Overview of the Old Testament structure and the placement of the Book of Daniel.Chapter 3: Covenants and Prophecy in Biblical History20:00 - 30:00Explanation of the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants, and their role in understanding biblical prophecy.Chapter 4: Daniel's Relevance for Modern Christian Living30:00 - 40:00Application of Daniel's teachings to contemporary Christian life in a secular world. Keywords#BookOfDaniel#Prophecy#Sovereignty#Faith#BibleStudy#Clarity#Conviction#Purpose#OldTestament#Eschatology#AbrahamicCovenant#MosaicCovenant#Babylon#Exile#SpiritualWarfare#Angels#Faithfulness#GodsPlan#ChristianLiving#BibleInterpretation

Chris Holman welcomes back Jonathan Smith, Senior Chief Deputy Director for LEO, Michigan's Labor and Economic Opportunity Department. Chris had several questions for Jonathan in this conversation: What is the Community Growth Academy and why is it so important for Michigan right now? How will the program help make Michigan's communities more resilient to future economic shifts? How does this effort tie into Michigan's clean energy and mobility transition? When's the deadline to apply and how can people learn more? All of this falls under Michigan's Community & Worker Economic Transition Office. Can you tell us a little bit about the office and its mission? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Application for Community Growth Academy now open Peer learning cohort program to provide technical assistance and resources to transition-impacted communities LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Community & Worker Economic Transition Office is now accepting applications for the Community Growth Academy, an 18-month program that helps Michigan communities that have been impacted by transitions in the auto and utility sectors plan for long-term economic growth and prepare for future change. “Many Michigan communities have been impacted by changes in the auto and energy industries, especially when major employers shut down,” said Community and Worker Economic Transition Office Director Jonathan Smith. “The Community Growth Academy gives these communities the tools to build stronger, more diverse economies and deal with challenges like lost tax revenue, higher unemployment or rising utility costs.” Academy members will receive technical assistance designed to support communities with the tools and capacity to deploy the Community Transition Playbook and build customized economic growth and resilience strategies unique to their local needs. Selected members will have access to additional benefits, including grant funding to implement projects, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, support from state employees with resource navigation and a dedicated, full-time fellow to assist with implementing the strategies designed and developed through the program. “Economic shifts are not a one-size-fits-all process. The Transition Office recognizes that and works with communities to address their individual challenges. This project complements the Michigan Municipal League's efforts to support local economic development, so we are happy to see this program launch," said Daniel Gilmartin, Michigan Municipal League Executive Director. “Many communities, despite having a shared idea of how they want to grow, do not always have the resources or capacity to pursue their vision. This program helps fill those gaps and builds on the work that CEDAM has done to build local capacity through its existing fellowship programs,” said Eddie Fakhoury, Community Economic Development Association of Michigan Executive Director. The Transition Office encourages applications from community-serving organizations such as municipal governments, nonprofits, community foundations, regional planning or economic development agencies or tribal organizations representing transition-impacted communities. Academy membership will reflect diversity in affected industries and geographies across the state. The Community Growth Academy is supported by funding from the Ballmer Group. For more information about this opportunity, including a list of transition-impacted communities, visit Michigan.gov/CommunityGrowthAcademy. Instructional design isn't just about what learners know—it's about what they can do. In this episode, Dr. Karl Kapp discusses his new book, Action First Learning, and why engagement, application, and challenge are essential for lasting impact.  Show Notes: Karl Kapp challenges traditional instructional design methods and introduces ideas that inspire lasting behavior change from learners. His key takeaways include: Design for Application, Not Absorption: Action First Learning emphasizes giving learners opportunities to apply concepts right away. By focusing on real-world tasks and challenges from the start, training becomes more relevant, memorable, and impactful. Desirable Difficulties Improve Retention: Learning that feels too easy may not stick. Struggles—when designed well—lead to deeper understanding, stronger memory, and long-term performance. Reflection Is Essential for Learning: Without intentional reflection, learners may have experiences but miss the lessons. Instruction should include built-in prompts or creative methods to encourage personal reflection. Effective Learning Doesn't Require Expensive Tech: High-impact learning experiences can be created using simple tools like card games, role-plays, or branching scenarios. It's the design, not the delivery method, that matters most. Gamification Is Evolving—And So Should We: Today's most effective gamified learning emphasizes strategy, feedback, and motivation—not just points and badges. The future lies in designing experiences, not rewards. Read more from Dr. Karl Kapp Beyond Gamification: A Move Toward Action-First Learning (published by ATD)Action First Learning (plus Instructor's Guide, Learning Tools, and Coloring Page published by ATD) Actions Speak Louder than Words: Why Action First Learning is the Key to Real World Preparedness (Published in Training Industry) Powered by Learning earned Awards of Distinction in the Podcast/Audio and Business Podcast categories from The Communicator Awards and a Gold and Silver Davey Award. Mr. Black is back from his yearly mission trip to Sturgis, South Dakota. He is also fresh out of his prison ministry work and ready to INSPIRE and to ask probing questions. Why are so many people struggling to belong and fit in? Why is there so much distance, pain and relationships that are in tatters? Why do many people feel so unloved and underappreciated? Today on Like It Matters Radio Mr. Black poses the question, “What is Love?”. It is reminiscent of Pontius Pilate’s question to Jesus, ‘What is Truth?’ The questions are compounding on each other. What is the truth that leads to the love that allows people to function at the highest levels? On today’s hour of power Mr. Black will take his listeners through a couple of stories and the reality that people are the greatest commodity in our lives. When we invest in people and love on people, then we all do better. Why do people go into prisons and serve those less fortunate? Why do people go on mission trips and spend their time and money pouring into other people? Because people matter- we are all in the People business no matter what we do for a living! Culture of Blessing Sermon Summary (Acts 2:42–47) Coleton continued teaching on the vision of the church: to see the fame and deeds of God repeated in our time by developing followers of Jesus. This vision requires a certain kind of culture. Last week, he emphasized a culture of the Gospel and a culture of pursuit. This week, he focused on cultivating a culture of blessing. Culture of Blessing A culture of blessing is one where followers of Jesus:     •    Understand their identity as God's people called to bless the world.     •    Recognize their unique gifts given by the Spirit to bring flourishing where there is chaos.     •    Actively live out their calling so that others experience God's goodness through them. Biblical Foundation     •    The First Commission (Gen. 1–2): Adam and Eve were commanded to fill the earth, rule it, and bring order and flourishing.     •    The Promise to Abraham (Gen. 12:3; 22:17–18): God promised Abraham's descendants would bless all nations.     •    Fulfillment in Jesus (Gal. 3:16): Jesus is the promised offspring who brings blessing to the nations.     •    The New Commission (Matt. 28:18–20): Jesus calls His followers to multiply disciples and bring spiritual renewal to the world.     •    Equipped by the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:7; Eph. 2:10): Every believer is gifted for the common good and created for good works prepared in advance. Historical Examples of Blessing     •    The Early Church: Outsiders marveled at Christians' love in caring for the poor, orphans, the sick, and prisoners. Their lives made the gospel visible.     •    The Clapham Sect (18th century): William Wilberforce, John Newton, and others used their resources and influence to bless society—ending the slave trade, reforming prisons, starting schools, improving labor laws, and even protecting animals. Modern Examples of Blessing     •    A church member (Colin) comforting someone in the middle of a panic attack, bringing God's peace.     •    A Starbucks worker intentionally making coffee to the glory of God, hoping people would “taste” God's goodness. Application for Today     •    Blessing is our identity and purpose in the world.     •    We are called not to wait for someone else to act but to live with expectation that God has positioned us to bring renewal.     •    Every act—whether teaching, building, counseling, cooking, or studying—can be done to God's glory so others encounter His presence.     •    As a church, opportunities to bless include local and international missions, prayer, using spiritual gifts, and serving in ministry teams. Coleton urged the church to embrace their calling as co-heirs with Christ, stepping into the works God has prepared for them, so that the city of Memphis and the nations might experience God's blessings through His people. ⸻ Discipleship Discussion Questions Understanding the Message     1.    How does the biblical story—from Genesis to Jesus—shape your view of what it means to be a person of blessing?     2.    Why is it significant that blessing is both our identity and purpose as followers of Jesus? Personal Application     3.    What unique gifts, skills, or opportunities has God given you that you could use to bring flourishing into someone else's life?     4.    How might you approach your daily work, tasks, or responsibilities differently if you saw them as ways to display God's glory?     5.    Where in your life right now do you see “chaos” that God might be calling you to step into with His blessing? Community Application     6.    What can our church do to strengthen a “culture of blessing” both inside and outside our walls?     7.    Which mission or ministry opportunities (local, international, or church-based) could you step into this year to bring God's blessing to others? ⸻ Quotes from Authors     •    Alan Kreider, The Patient Ferment of the Early Church: “They looked at the Christians and saw them energetically feeding poor people and giving proper funerals to those who couldn't afford them, caring for orphans who lacked property and parents, and being attentive to aged slaves and prisoners. They interpreted these actions as works of love. And they said, Vide, (look!) Look how they love. They did not say, ‘Aude, listen to the Christian's message'; they did not say, ‘Lege, read what they write.' Hearing and reading were important too. But we must not miss the reality: the pagans said look! Christianity's truth was visible because it was embodied and enacted by its members.”

Welcome to the Via Stoica Podcast, The Podcast on Stoicism. In this episode of The Via Stoica Podcast, Benny speaks with Dr. John Sellars, one of today's leading scholars of Stoicism and the history of philosophy. Dr. Sellars is Reader in the History of Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London, Associate Editor for the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series at King's College London, and a founding member of both Modern Stoicism and the Aurelius Foundation. He has authored and edited numerous works, including Stoicism (recently revised), Stoicism and Emotion, and The Cambridge Companion to Marcus Aurelius. Our conversation traces Dr. Sellars' journey from his early fascination with science and politics to his lifelong study of ancient philosophy. We explore how the Stoics carried forward the legacy of Socrates in a way that feels both practical and deeply human, and why their materialist, empiricist outlook resonated more with him than Plato's metaphysical idealism. Dr. Sellars reflects on how philosophy has shaped his own life, from changing his views on free will to cultivating a “big picture” perspective that keeps ego and ambition in check. The discussion ranges widely: from common misconceptions about Stoicism, such as that it is unemotional, politically disengaged, or only for men, to the role of community in mental health, and the tension between Stoic determinism and ideas of God, providence, and nature. We also dive into Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, examining why the book endures, how Marcus grappled with death and difficult people, and why we should see him not as a perfect sage but as a flawed human being struggling to live well.Dr. Sellars also shares insights into his ongoing projects, including new research on Stoicism and leadership (with Justin Stead of the Aurelius Foundation), and his work with psychologists at Royal Holloway testing Stoic practices in peer-reviewed studies on resilience, anxiety, and anger.Whether you are new to Stoicism or looking to go deeper into its history and modern applications, this episode offers both scholarly depth and practical wisdom for living a good life. You can find Dr. Sellars' books, including the revised edition of Stoicism and The Cambridge Companion to Marcus Aurelius, through major booksellers. Have you ever noticed how some people light up when they give, while others treat it like just another transaction?Maybe the difference isn't in the amount they give—but in how God designed them to give. What if discovering your God-given giving style is the key to finding joy in generosity? Today, Chris Gabriel joins us to unpack the idea of W.I.S.E. Generosity.Chris Gabriel is a philanthropic leader and financial advisor with over 30 years of experience. A Yale and Oxford graduate, he created the WISEgenerosity framework to help individuals and institutions give well. Chris leads a thriving wealth management practice and is the author of WISEgenerosity: A Guide for Purposeful and Practical Living and Giving. From Inspiration to ApplicationGenerosity isn't just about giving money—it's about connecting your giving to your God-given identity and calling. Generosity is an essential virtue of a life well lived. It's also perhaps the aspect of God's nature that's closest to our own. We're made in His image, and that means we're made to give. While many Christians feel a tug toward generosity, few know how to give in a way that aligns with their values, financial situation, or spiritual identity.God plants seeds in our hearts, but we also have a responsibility to be wise stewards of our resources. WISEgenerosity is designed to help people take those seeds and apply them intentionally based on their unique circumstances. The W.I.S.E. FrameworkThe heart of the book is captured in the acronym W.I.S.E., which stands for:Well-Grounded – Giving that is both spiritually rooted and practically planned. It's based on God's truth, but also on the real resources and capabilities you have.Inspired – This is where giving intersects with personal identity. We each have a unique calling from God, and when our giving aligns with that, it becomes deeply meaningful.Satisfying – Generosity brings joy when it flows from being grounded and inspired. The blessings are bountiful, not just for others, but for the giver.Effective – This is about wise stewardship—giving in a way that meets real needs and aligns with God's purposes in the world.Discovering Your Personal Giving Identity (PGI)One of the most powerful tools is the Personal Giving Identity (PGI). Much like a personality test, the PGI helps individuals uncover their unique generosity “type” and how it connects to biblical truths. There are four generosity personalities:Focused Givers – Like Joseph, they're results-driven and strategic.Expressive Givers – Like David, they're creative and people-oriented.Considerate Givers – Like Ruth, they're relational and emotionally attuned.Disciplined Givers – Like Daniel, they're measured, analytical, and intentional. Each of these biblical characters reflects traits we see in modern givers. When we understand our PGI, we can give in a way that's aligned, impactful, and joyful. The PGI tool doesn't stop with individuals. Couples can benefit from it too. The spousal comparison tool helps partners understand each other's giving styles and how to complement one another in shared generosity.God brings couples together to align their capabilities and calling. Understanding how we each approach giving can deepen unity and effectiveness in our marriages.Strategic and Systematic GivingWhile spontaneous giving is beautiful, we also should embrace strategic and systematic generosity.Just like with other areas of life, awareness and planning elevate our impact. Some givers are driven by their hearts, while others are more analytical. Both are needed—but what matters is that we give with intention and trust.Coming this fall is Advance, a new toolkit designed for churches, ministries, and financial advisors to help others walk through the WISEgenerosity framework in community.Whether you're an individual, a couple, a ministry leader, or a financial professional, this resource will provide practical tools, spiritual insight, and relational wisdom to guide your giving.Ready to Take the Next Step?If you're ready to explore your personal giving identity or learn how to make your generosity more purposeful, visit WiseGenerosity.com. You'll find:A free PGI assessmentBible study toolsTeaching resources for churches and ministriesInformation on Chris's book and upcoming toolkitsIn a culture that often views giving as transactional or occasional, WISEgenerosity reminds us that giving is a deeply spiritual act—one that reflects the heart of God, shapes our identity, and brings lasting joy.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm the legal guardian for my 97-year-old father. There is an old saying, “A picture is worth 1000 words”. The typical human being speaks at 120-150 words per minute- Mr. Black gets to 180. 1 picture of disrespect, non-interest, non-concern, rudeness, lacking love…overrides 6-8 minutes of nonstop dialogue. We now know the mind often prioritizes visual information when it is more salient or relevant to the context. Auditory information can dominate if it is unexpected or emotionally charged. The brain integrates both senses, but visual cues typically have a stronger influence on perception. In ambiguous situations, the mind may rely on visual input to resolve discrepancies between sight and sound. This is why it is important that OUR ACTIONS, what people SEE us do, are so important and so influential. On today’s hour of Power Mr. Black is going to help listeners understand that what they are doing speaks so loudly, that most people aren’t listening to what most people are saying- but they are watching! Inspiration, Education and Application are on the menu for listeners. John MacArthur, Ravi Zecharias, Stories and the Reality and power of Resilience will be on the agenda.
