What is it with St. Louis and fielding, what are the seams to tie the city, its fondness for baseball, and defense together? That's the question that comes at the conclusion of a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball. Author and historian Ed Wheatley joins baseball writer and host Derrick Goold to discuss his new book, "The Finest in the Field: A History of Baseball Through 50 Iconic Gloves." The book uses art-worthy photos of famous gloves, from Bill Doak's that launched the modern glove to Bob Gibson's beloved glove without a logo, to tell the story about individual players, their gloves, and ultimately baseball history. The game itself has changed because of the advances in gloves, from tossing pitches like horseshoes to firing 104-mph fastballs because the catcher's mitt can now handle that. Well, mostly. Most everyone remembers their first glove and their favorite glove, and some big leaguers go whole careers with only one glove, while others get a new glove every season. When Masyn Winn finally got a grip on his first career Rawlings Gold Glove Award, he won the 100th in Cardinals history. The Cardinals are the first big-league club to reach 100 Gold Gloves, and the team just behind them is the Baltimore Orioles, who of course used to be the St. Louis Browns. Four of the finest fielding third baseman in baseball history have called St. Louis' hot corner home -- most recently Nolan Arenado and Scott Rolen -- but the all-time leader in Gold Glove Awards at the position played in Baltimore. The all-time leader at shorstop is a Cardinal, Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina won three Platinum Glove Awards before anyone else won a second one. Stan Musial was the first to use a style of glove that he popularized and then, decades later, became even more popular for outfielders. Oh, and Rawlings is based in St. Louis. And, heck, the play that launched the Cardinals' World Series history was a tag at second, not a hit. And it was applied with a Bill Doak model glove made by Rawlings. Wheatley, one of the biggest champions of Browns history and a keeper of the St. Louis Browns' flame, considers that question about St. Louis and the deep roots of defense and comes to a compelling conclusion why. As the longtime archrivals clash for the first time in 2026 with a weekend series at Busch Stadium, here is what the scuffling Cardinals and struggling Cubs share in common. They both got to this point thanks to the Brewers. The Cubs arrive in St. Louis fresh off ending a 10-game losing streak that yanked them from first place in the National League Central to last place, and the Cardinals slide home after being swept in Milwaukee. They've lost six of their past eight games against division foes. With both teams separated percentage points going into their first series of the season, this is a pivotal weekend for at least one of them. Patrick Mooney, longtime Cubs beat writer and senior writer at The Athletic, joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss how the Cubs could go from the high highs of two 10-game winning streaks this season to the current questions at the end of a 10-game plummet. Along with BPIB host Derrick Goold, Monney discusses the Cubs' pitching injuries and limited depth, their center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, and the manager Craig Counsell and his sense of humor behind some stoic answers. For the Cardinals, this series is their first time back since "tarps off" and a chance to play in front of huge, lively crowds -- and sell them on returning. The writers also discuss what these longtime rivals, the Cubs and Cardinals, share in common. They're both chasing Milwaukee. More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. CINCINNATI -- The Cardinals continue a stretch of 12 consecutive games against National League Central rivals, and all five division teams will reach their 50th game of the season with a record at .500 or better. At least four will have winning records as the first third of the season comes to an end. But is there a real NL Central race? Post-Dispatch editor Nathan Mills joins baseball writer Derrick Goold to discuss the division and what each team needs to do to win the title. The Cubs and Brewers stand out. The Reds have intriguing talent. The Pirates have a wicked pitching staff. The Cardinals ... must continue to win at the margins, and there's a word that Goold gives to that: "Zero Defect." Besides, the real race in the division may not be on the field at all. It could be in the dugout. If the Cardinals continue to play beyond expectations, manager Oli Marmol may present the best challenger in the division to Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy's three-peat as National League Manager of the Year. Also discussed on this episode: The method behind the six-inning starts from the Cardinals rotation. How to update classic pitching metrics for a modern starter. The invention, in real-time of Skyline Chili poutine. You're welcome. More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. "James Bond" is the longest-running and most successful spy film series, with 25 movies released by Eon Productions since 1962. "Mission: Impossible" doesn't have quite as many films with eight to date, but you also have the long-running 1960s television show. The latest challenger to the genre hasn't been around quite as long, but the series of "Jack Ryan" films, taken from or inspired by Tom Clancy's novels, has been going strong since Alec Baldwin starred in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October." After four more movies starring Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine in the role of Jack Ryan, John Krasinski reprised the role for the streaming series on Amazon Prime Video. Now, Krasinski is bringing his Jack Ryan to theaters with "Jack Ryan: Ghost War." In this episode, co-host Bruce Miller speaks with director Andrew Bernstein, co-star Michael Kelly and stars, writer and producer Krasinski, as well as co-star Sienna Miller. Miller and co-host Terry Lipshetz also talk about the history of the series and spy movies in general. Keep your shirts on, the Best Podcast in Baseball is back. And just in time, too. Good vibes have engulfed the Cardinals after returing from a successful swing through California to an eletrcic weekend at Busch Stadium, thanks to the fortuitous pairing of the Stephen F. Austin club baseball team, a walk-off win Friday night, and a mid-game revival Saturday against Kansas City. For several years, the host of the Best Podcast in Baseball has stumped and advocated for a change in the atmosphere at Busch -- from the need for a victory anthem to the idea of transplanting the supporter section from City SC to Busch, even for a weekend. Well, it's all happening. The students from SFA created that section organically, the Cardinals have adopted a victory anthem, and they're playing a style of baseball that is producing wins. Heck, they even have a home run prop. BPIB asks, have they found their voice as a contender? Host Derrick Goold, who misplaced his voice for several weeks, welcomes KMOX/104.1 FM star and BPIB fixture Kevin Wheeler discuss what elements of the Cardinals' success and the atmosphere at the ballpark has staying power. Also discussed: Wheeler suggests that the Cardinals have received produuction from Jordan Walker equivalent to a $40-milliion free-agent addition. Goold details his breakdown on the three types of statistics: narrative, qualitative, and predictive. And how each applies to discussing analytics for players, fans, and writers, and of course team executives, who camp out in the predictive category. The challenge of development when it comes to a character like Grogu as his big-screen debut approaches. This is the way BPIB returns More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. There is something to be said about the opportunities that come with independent films. Actors can shift behind the camera or into other roles not typically available in more mainstream productions. That’s the case with “Neglected,” an independent project from David Lipper, who wrote, directed and produced the film to go along with an acting role in the movie. In this week’s episode, hear from Lipper as well as his co-star Elena Sanchez, who both share their thoughts on the movie. That interview from co-host Bruce Miller is followed by another with Josh Duhamel and Dylan Sprouse, who also co-star in the film. Duhamel is best known for his Daytime Emmy-winning role on “All My Children” and for appearances in four of the “Transformers” movies. Sprouse has had a number of roles with his twin brother, Cole, in shows like “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and “Grace Under Fire,” but has more recently found success on his own. Whereas network television traditionally went into hibernation by late May, in the age of streaming, where content is king, fresh TV programming is needed 12 months a year. Right now, there is plenty to choose from. One of the big ones is the next offering from “Baby Reindeer” creator and star Richard Gadd, who returns with a new limited series titled “Half Man,” a drama starring Jamie Bell. Also returning to the small screen is Kate Hudson, who is back for the second season of “Running Point,” in which she runs the family’s pro basketball team. There is yet another “Yellowstone” spinoff with “Dutton Ranch.” Meanwhile, “For All Mankind” is slowly winding down with its fifth season on Apple TV+, but fans won’t have to wait long for something fresh as its spinoff, “Star City,” is due out May 29 on the same platform. On the topic of spinoffs, “The Testaments”—set years after the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale” and continuing its narrative—has been off to a strong start. Also returning is the second season of the now-anthology series “Beef” with Oscar Isaac and his “Inside Llewyn Davis” co-star Carey Mulligan. We discuss these shows and more on this week’s episode. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is the retired editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. Does it feel like summer? If not, soon it will be with a nonstop flow of big movies about to hit theaters. There are general formulas that are followed each year. You have a music biopic in "Michael." There are movies with numbers in their titles, like "The Devil Wears Prada 2" and "Toy Story 5." There are always superhero movies, and this year there are plenty, including "Avengers: Doomsday," "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "Supergirl." And, of course, you have big movies from big directors, like Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" and Steven Spielberg's "Disclosure Day." "Masters of the Universe" looks to bring in the 1980s crowd, but will it hold up? Does "The Odyssey" have enough star power to succeed, or is the classic tale destined to fail? Can "The Mandalorian & Grogu" get the "Star Wars" franchise back on track for Disney? And do we really need a live-action version of “Moana” even though the animated versions remain fresh? Ultimately, summer blockbusters are about movies that you don't want to miss in theaters. Only time will tell if this will be a successful summer. Tubi or not Tubi? The streaming platform has found an interesting niche of programs, often starring social media influencers. One of the latest programs to drop is "Hive," a horror film featuring "Dancing with the Stars" winner Xochitl Gomez and Aaron Dominguez. Co-host Bruce Miller catches up with the pair. Miller and co-host Terry Lipshetz then discuss the latest streaming programs: "Half Man" is a new HBO series from Richard Gadd, who found success with his breakout Netflix limited series "Baby Reindeer." Andie MacDowell is back with the fourth season of the Netflix series "The Way Home." And following the success of the Netflix limited series "Beef," the show has since become an anthology series with a new cast featuring Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. They co-starred in the movie "Inside Llewyn Davis." The question is whether they can find the same chemistry. Finally, be prepared to hit pause and finish "The Pitt" if you haven't already. The final hour of season two has aired, and we have a spoiler-filled conversation about how things ended and what might be next for the cast. What happens when coaching stops being polite, and starts being honest? In this episode, we dive into the moment a bold, unfiltered piece of advice went viral, and more importantly, helped a client snap out of self-sabotage and land a major contract. This conversation pulls back the curtain on what real coaching looks like when the goal isn't comfort… it's results. You'll hear why focusing on the 10% going wrong is quietly killing your momentum, and how shifting your perspective to what's actually working can change everything, fast. We also break down the true role of a coach: not just to support you, but to challenge you. To give you the perspective you can't access when you're stuck in your own emotions—and to call you forward when you're playing small. This episode goes deep into the connection between mindset, manifestation, and action. Not the fluffy version—but the kind that requires radical self-belief, discipline, and a willingness to rewire how you think about success. And if you've ever struggled to charge what you're worth or ask for more—this is your wake-up call. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure and give us a five star rating and leave us a comment on iTunes, Podcast Addict, Podchaser and Castbox about what you'd like us to talk about that will help you realize that at any moment, any day, you too can decide, it's your turn!
MIAMI -- Fresh off a sweep of the Astros in Houston, the Cardinals visit the Marlins with a tailwind of five consecutive wins and a fast start to their rebuild season. Does their early success suggest they'll outperform expectations in 2026, and if so should they accelerate their rebuild plans? That's the question that begins a conversation between 101 ESPN/WXOS host Brandon Kiley, of BK and Ferrario and the Redbird Report, and Best Podcast in Baseball host and baseball writer Derrick Goold. The Cardinals' rush to five games better than .500 this season is buoyed by defying some trends, such as their negative run differential and their undefeated record (5-0) in extra innings. Both indicate that the Cardinals will experience a correction. Still, they've played a crisp, opportunistic brand of baseball that can claim wins in April, and if they continue to outplay their projections how will that challenge the team's stated plan to focus on the longterm. Will the Cardinals keep their eye on the ball and make future-focused trades even if the club orbits .500? What message will they send fans if this team draws support for how it's playing, for how well it's playing? There are messages and actions that the Cardinals could in the months ahead that would find the balance between responding to the way the team has played now while not straying from their longer-range goals. Kiley and Goold discuss what that looks if the Cardinals just move their timeline up and what those moves look like. More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. Brians Questions: I am getting ready to build a mission style entertainment center. This project will use what I'm told is arched pedestal legs which was used a lot by Gustav Stickley. I will be gluing up three 5 3/4"x 28" quarter sawn white oak blanks to make the legs. I will then route the curve using a compression bit and template which I made using the Shaper Origin. My question is what are some good methods to ensure there is a tight (almost invisible) line on the glue up of the blanks. The legs are going to be a major feature on this piece and I would hate for the lines to be visible. I've done glue ups for square legs before and have pretty good success although not perfect. I know grain match is a big deal but wanted to pick your guys brains on clamping methods, glue type and anything else you can suggest to ensure success. Yours is the best podcast on the net. Tom Young I recently upgraded from a 9” ryobi bench top bandsaw to a craftsman 10” Floor standing. I'd like to build a mobile base for it. My question is, how tall should the table be? Should it be elbow high? Waste high? Higher ? Lower? For context, I'm mostly a hand tool guy and, although I have a dinky table saw, I don't use it much, favoring the bandsaw. I'll do some light resawing and other more detailed work with it. Thanks guys and Guy. Love the show.Jason Guys Questions: I am working on a large kitchen cabinet project and have come across a few questions I thought would make good discussion. Project includes 16 base cabinets, 14 uppers, range hood and a couple of custom spice racks, open shelves etc. Upper will have 14" upper uppers stacked on them with glass fronts. Lowers are almost entirely drawers. Carcasses are about done heading into face frames and drawers. -Drawer box preferences or use cases for solid wood vs plywood with edge banding. I am leaning towards plywood due to number I need (38), being simpler to use prefinished ply then mill down rough cut. But it seems like cheating.....Large Pots and pans drawers 3/4" sides or 5/8" sides? -Drawer box construction when using overlay fronts. I do not have a dovetail jig. I may end up just pocket screwing them which is what I have done in the past but I wanted to add an upscale touch. I tried my domino with Sipo dominoes, pin nailed the box together first and then put two 5x30 dominoes in. To me the hole created was not that tight with the domino, didn't look nice. I see some YouTube experts make it seem easy, any experience or thoughts? Also thought of using drawer lock bit on the new to me shaper I just picked up but no experience yet. (Grizzly 3hp) Thoughts or preferences? Any other thoughts or recommendations when batching out large cabinet projects. Matt Hola Y'all, I have been listening to y'all for a little over a year, and woodworking for two years. Best Podcast on the interwebs! I was recently gifted a used Grizzly Go555 14" 1HP. I have never owned a Bandsaw and I want to use it mainly for resawing. I was told it is working fine, but I prefer to "Trust, but Verify". My questions are: 1. What tune-up/preventive maintenance should I do immediately? 2. What upgrades should I do for resawing hardwood? Thanks so much! Peace, Love, and Sawdust Norris Sebastian Grandad's Workshop Huy's Questions: Hey guys! I am a full-time journeyman carpenter and I work in the commercial sector around the Indianapolis area. Currently working at the new IU Health Hospital downtown. I've been doing carpentry professionally for nearly 9 years. Almost half of a year ago, I decided to purchase a 4x4 shapeoko 5 pro and got involved with learning about cnc. As friends and family found out about my new acquired skill, I've been asked to make various types of wood related projects-some requiring cnc and some that don't. I have a decent amount of handheld power tools and jobsite tools I've acquired through the years. Thankfully those tools have helped me in completing non-cnc related projects but my problem is the lack of woodworking tools and equipment at my disposal. Many times I've turned down projects due to not having the right tools. Other times I've taken extra steps to complete tasks, but had I just had the right tool, it could've been a breeze. I want to have a nice wood shop in my barn eventually but not sure how to prioritize my wants and needs. Considering trading the cnc to instantly increase my wood shop tool budget and maybe revisiting it in the future. With a focus on increasing my wood working tools and building up my shop—What are some upgrades/ tool trades/ must-have-tools to kickstart my wood shop? What tools should I get rid of? Tools at my current disposal/ 4x4 shapeoko 5 pro, a dw 8-1/4” table saw, dw 735 planer, dw 10” miter saw, Bosch random orbital sander, metabo belt sander , ridgid oscillating spindle sander, central machine drill press, various dw drills/ impacts/ saw zalls/ oscillator/ hammer drill/ jig saw/ circular saw etc. Tools that could've made my life easier in the past- a jointer, band saw, track saw, drum sander, router table, etc Thanks, Holden P.s. My dad and I carpool together during the work week and love listening to the podcast-we especially have come fond of Guy's no bs, straightforward attitude. Keep up the good work! Korey from Independence, KY again. I was thinking about getting radial arm saw to use exclusively for dados. I have never seen a radial arm saw in person. They can be found very cheaply on Facebook marketplace and space in not an issue for me. Do you think it would be worth it and can you use it to cut dados safely. What are some other good uses for a radial arm saw. Thank you and keep up the good work. Korey

WASHINGTON -- In a recent social media post, baseball broadcaster and reporter Dani Wexelman shared a photo of her interviewing Matthew Liberatore when he was a high schooler and juxtaposed it with a photo of her interviewing him this year as the Cardinals' opening day starter. That is a great illustration of the arc of Wexelman's career telling baseball stories, from the backfields of Jupiter, Florida, covering amateur baseball and rising talents to front and center now with Cardinals.TV to capture what the club hopes is a rising team. Wexelman joins Best Podcast in Baseball host Derrick Goold while both of them are in Washington, D.C., covering the Cardinals to discuss the start to the 2026 season as well as the path that brought Wexelman to Mizzou and the back this year as a prominent part of the Cardinals' broadcasts. They also discuss how Wexelman's experience covering amateur baseball for many years and being a national pundit looking at Major League Baseball through a broader lens informs what she plans to bring to telling stories during these Cardinals' "new era." For some Americans home ownership is a way to build wealth for future generations. But West Virginia presents the complexities and nuances of that reality. The Mountain State has the nation's highest homeownership rate but the second lowest personal income rate. And much of the state's housing is old and needs repair. In one West Virginia county, 67 percent of the homes are more than 80 years old and half rate below normal on standard quality measures. By several measures there are 500,000 people living in such conditions. In this encore Us & Them — which was recently honored by the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters for Best Podcast — we travel just across the state line to Western Virginia to experience a side of the housing crisis we don't often see — structures in disrepair that people call home.
