A tale of dark science, and the ghastly mystery that enveloped the Spanish doctor's attempts at artificial refrigeration. Cool Air by H. P. Lovecraft. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. The story of H. P. Lovecraft is a sad story. He lived a life marked by poverty, and personal loss. His early years were overshadowed by his father's descent into madness, which led to his institutionalization and death. His mother, similarly afflicted with mental illness, was overprotective and instilled in him a sense of fragility and isolation. As a child, Lovecraft was a prodigy, reading and writing at an early age, but frequent illnesses and nervous conditions kept him from completing high school. He lived with his controlling mother and struggled throughout his life with self-doubt.His writing, though prolific, was largely unrecognized during his lifetime, and he was forced to become a ghostwriter just to scrape by.Lovecraft was diagnosed with cancer and was virtually unknown at the time of his death at the age of 46, and though he never achieved fame or financial success in life, his influence on horror and science fiction remains unparalleled.Today's story was published two years after Lovecraft died and appears in the September 1939 issue of Weird Tales Magazine on page 95, Cool Air by H. Insatiable Life.Based on the post by x sociate23, in 3 parts. Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories.Planetary Survey had been right about the unpredictable weather patterns on Carter II. It was barely two days after the pond incident and only three weeks into their stay and the unstable star had apparently entered a cooling period. Cold fronts had rushed in from the polar regions, mixing with the warmer equatorial winds to cause icy rainfall to pelt the HAB in a near constant downpour. Nighttime temperatures plummeted to near freezing. Their shelter was insulated but the thin plasticine walls could only keep out so much of the cold. Complicating matters was the fact that their heating unit had shorted out the day prior when some sort of electric beetle had tried to get its rocks off with the heating element.Curt poked his head out of the cocoon of his sleeping bag to check the thermometer near his bunk. It registered forty-four degrees and dipped lower as he watched. He shivered as he looked over at Eza's bundled form. The poor girl was not taking the temperature inversion well. She shivered and shook beneath the thin padding of her sleep sleeve. He cursed again the short-sighted designers who hadn't taken into account the possible need to build a fire inside the HAB."Kurt?" came a muffled stutter from her olive grab sleeper."Yes?"She poked her face out of the cinched hole, looking like a giant blue faced caterpillar. A beautiful caterpillar."I know you have done all you can with the heat unit," she said, her teeth chattering, "But I am r-r-really cold.""I'm sorry I couldn't do more.""P-p-perhaps you can. I red that in t-t-times of crisis, T-Terrans would huddle together for warmth. Might we t-t-try that?" She knew she would be taking a risk being that close to him, but it was the lesser of two evils.Curt was also hesitant. He didn't trust his body not to betray his lust for her. His cock was already tingling at the thought. But she needed his help, and he couldn't deny those deep green eyes that stared pleadingly at him. So, he agreed, climbing from his sleep sleeve as he began to remove his tunic."W-w-what are you doing?" she asked hesitantly, feeling the stirring again at the sight of his deliciously tanned flesh."One less layer of clothes. It'll help warm you up faster," he explained."Shall I disrobe as well?"'Hell yes!' his mind screamed but instead he said, "No, that won't be necessary."He climbed into the sleep sleeve beside her and she immediately plastered herself to his side, her arm gripping so hard that it forced the air from his lungs. Wrapping his arm around her, she scooted closer, her heavy tits pressing against his side. Her body felt like it was on fire and for a moment he worried she might be sick with fever. But then he remembered that Venusians have a higher body temp than humans. No wonder she was suffering. Eza buried her face into his neck, pulling him closer still. Her body was racked by uncontrolled spasms, and he rubbed her arms and her back to try to warm her while at the same time trying to ignore the fact that only a thin layer of molyester separated her heavenly skin from his own. But she was making it difficult, her supplely scaled leg wrapping possessively around his. The temp, as well as his manhood, began to rapidly rise inside the sleeve. At length, the tremors subsided, and she relaxed against him with a melodious sigh. Her leg shifted higher, coming dangerously close to grazing his throbbing erection. Now he was trembling but not due to the cold.Eza felt it again, the burning, the desire. Feeling his body against hers, the churning inside her was more than she could bear any longer. Even the moments when she had given in were not enough to truly sate the sensations. She had to tell him. But what would he say? Would he be repulsed by her needs?"Kurt?" she mewed."Yes?""I have a confession to make," she said into his chest, "I have been keeping a secret from you.""It's okay, everyone is entitled to their secrets." Even as he said it, his mind was racing trying to think what it could be. None of the possibilities seemed pleasant."But this is different because it involves you. You see I... I have imprinted upon you.""What does that mean?"She raised herself up onto an elbow to look at him. His face glowed nearly as blue as her own in the light of the twin moons that shone down through the skylight."When a Venusian comes of age, as I have, they imprint upon the person they have chosen as their agrah.""Agrah?"She looked at him sheepishly."Loosely translated it means their... their lover."The face, as well as the mind behind it, showed surprise but before he could speak, she interrupted him."There's more.""More?""As part of the imprinting, a Venusian will develop an empathic connection with their agrah.""And what does that mean?""It means I can feel your emotions." Her eyes burned into his as she leaned in closer, "I know you were watching me by the lake."The Earthling's eyes widened in panic as he tried to explain himself but a Venusian finger to his lips silenced him."I know because I felt you. Your emotions for me were so strong that they...they made me...what is the word..." She stared off as if trying to remember but then her green eyes pierced him with a look that made his stomach do flips, "Horny."Curt lay there, staring blankly with her pointy finger still pressed to his lips. She felt his jumbled emotions: fear, trepidation, uncertainty. But above all she felt the one emotion that she too longed to indulge in: desire."I wish to demonstrate kissing," she said to his stupefied expression. He nodded into her finger. The hand it was attached to, moved to cup his jaw. She could feel his throbbing pulse, it matched the thunder of her own.Their lips coming together once more was like the attraction of two oppositely charged particles. Eza was now the demonstrator, wriggling her supple blue lips against his and he wondered if she had been practicing. Then his eyes shot open and crossed as her snake-like tongue slithered into his mouth. It wrestled with his, coiling and swirling, nearly filling his whole mouth. She literally shoved it down his throat and somehow he managed to resist the urge to cough. When he had first seen it by the lake, he had thought it would feel raspy but instead it was as silky and smooth as a strand of satin. He quivered at the feeling of it and was breathing hard by the time she ended the kiss."Where... did you learn... that?" he gasped."It was under a subheading called: Frenching," she explained. But then her face took on a sad expression, "I am sorry. I know I am not very good at it. I umm!"Curt pulled her into a savage kiss that filled both their minds with a haze of red heat. The sweet metal taste was overwhelming his senses as his tongue invaded her mouth. Her body seemed to melt against him as she sighed into his mouth like a harmonica. As the kiss lengthened, their hands and bodies became active. His hands caressed her arms and back, hers groped at his chest and abs. His body writhed beneath her touch while hers moved to straddle him. He felt the burning heat from her loins, she the hardened ridge of his manhood beneath his trousers. His strong hands sought her ass, gently squeezing the rounded humps. She sighed in yet another octave at the feeling, her hips grinding against his. Her lips pulled away, her eyes shining with yearning."Make fuck to me," she pleaded. His smile at her improper grammar only widened further as she sat upright, her webbed hand reaching for the zipper of her tunic. She tugged the faster tantalizingly slow, exposing inch after glorious inch of her blue flesh. Her heavy tits fell free of the garment as she tossed it aside. Her goblets hung before him like twin Christmas ornaments, and he reached for his newly unwrapped gifts. She shivered at his touch. The hands, though roughened and calloused from the work on their ship, nonetheless brushed across her skin like whispers from a feather. They glided across the rounded expanse, kneading the soft flesh like modeling clay. She gasped as he tweaked her plump, blueberry nipples between thumb and forefinger.Leaning forward, she took hold of her tit to aim the dark nib at his pink, receptive lips. They parted, enveloping the gooseflesh of her areola. She sucked in her breath as he began to suckle like a babe, lapping and mouthing the sensitive bud. Compulsively she ground her already damp sex against the buried ridge of his cock as he sucked more of her tender flesh into his mouth. Suddenly his hips thrust as if trying to force his way through their clothes, his hands pulling their loins tightly together.Eza climaxed at the motion and the unbridled emotion she felt from him in that moment. Her hand pulled his head closer to her bosom, her fleshy tit threatening to suffocate him as she let out a snaky hiss between clenched teeth. At last, she released her hold but his respite was short lived as her mouth descended, smothering him with feverish kisses. They pulled away to whisper into his ear."I wish to demonstrating something."Then he felt it. Her serpent tongue flicked out to slither through the conch shaped hollows of his ear. It lapped at the lobe before trailing down the curve of his neck and across his exposed collarbone. He shivered as his traveled across the expanse of his chest, rode the bulges of his abs. Her small hands pulled at the waist of his pants so that her tongue could slink beneath the material to lick the tender flesh just above his pubes. The entire time, her eyes never left his, the stare down only heightening his desire. His cock strained at its confines, threatening to rip the fabric as her hands worked to free it. It sprang to attention immediately, lightly hitting her in the nose and making her giggle. But her smiled faded, replaced with a look of awe at the pillar of flesh before her. She never expected him to be so big. He was a good nine inches, well over the five and three quarters the texts said was the average. He was also thick, her small webbed hand barely fitting around it as she delicately grasped the shaft. It felt as hot and hard as a recently fire beryllium rocket. Though she felt unsure of herself, this being her first time with any male, she couldn't help the rush of heat to her loins at the thought that Curt would soon be inside of her, filling her up, splitting her like a piece of du'Nar wood. Staring into his beautiful brown eyes that peered down at her with uninhibited desire, she opened her mouth as if she were about to bite into an apple. Her blueberry lips closed around the red delicious of his head and Curt gasped. Her lips were like satin as she slowly worked them across his mushroom shaped head. Her green eyes never left his face, wanting to gauge his reactions. The look of lust in them added to the feel of her lips on his cock. Emboldened by his whimpers of pleasure, she began to suck harder, taking more of him into her mouth with each stroke. Her purple curls swayed with the motions of her gently bobbing head. All at once she stopped, his cock head still in her mouth. He at first thought something was wrong but then he felt it: her tongue coiling around the head like an anaconda with its prey. He shivered at the new sensation of his cock being gripped in such a way as her lips resumed their sucking. He saw (and felt) the tongue slither out past her lips to twist and twirl down his length. He couldn't breathe, could only stare at her as she did things to his cock that no Terran girl, no matter how tongue twistingly talented, could ever do. He was shaking by the time her dark python released its victim."Was that acceptable?" she asked eagerly."Where the fuck did you learn that?!"Her face darkened with a look of guilt."My-my roommate at the Academy. She used to entertain many Terran males. One night while she thought I was asleep, she brought a man to our dorm. I-I watched her do that to him before they copulated."Curt's eyebrow shot up in surprise. 'This Venusian vixen is just full of surprises,' he thought."My, my. Aren't you a dirty girl.""I am not dirty," she said indignantly, "I am very hygienic.""That's not what that...Never mind.""Do you wish that I should continue?" she asked, going back to the subject still in her hand."Actually, I have a better idea.""What?""This roommate. Did the man she was with put his head between her legs by any chance?""Yes, he seemed to be trying to consume her.""Well, Lieutenant," he said with a mischievous grin, "Prepared to be consumed."He saw her eyes widened as she gulped.Eza was hesitant about her pending consumption, the almost painfully cries of her roommate fresh in her mind but she allowed herself to be laid down. The fact that Curt was eying her body like a buffet did not help her apprehension. But then he leaned down to kiss her gently, tenderly. She relaxed into the kiss, his lips melting away the tension but at the same time stoking up a fire of anticipation deep within her. His lips broke away to travel down her body. Though it was much shorter than hers, it nevertheless sent tingles through her as he wove lazy circles and trails down the nape of her neck, across the pointed domes of her tits, down the slope of her navel free belly. She lifted her legs so that he could remove her already soaked shorts. Her smell hit him hard, filling his lungs and driving his desire to a new level. Her legs parted, causing her indigo flower to blossom. Her breathing was shallow, her legs trembling as he ran kisses up and down her inner thighs. Her body seized, her hands clenching the sheets beneath her at his lips found her core. Her dark blue lips almost burned his tongue, they felt so hot but he would rather risk injury than remove it from their heavenly silkiness. Her scent as intoxicating, her taste luxurious. It dawned on him as he felt her body quaking that his were the first lips to taste her and he set out to make her first tonguing one for the ages.He lipped her folds, lapped at her metal flavored fluids as they flowed from her. Spreading her vulva to expose more of her lavender love tunnel, he plunged his tongue into her petals, wriggling it like a hungry bumble bee.The Venusian began to make sounds that could only be described as yodeling modulated through a Theremin, her moans of pleasure changing octave several times. He sought her clit and found that she had not one but two pointed nubs, one in front of the other. His tongue made figure eights around the twin pips, his lips slurping the dark pearls of her Venus clam.Eza cried out as she came, her hand seizing his head to pull his face deeper. Her juices drowned him and he gulped them greedily, the excess spilling down his chin. She writhed, stretched and sang as he lustfully devoured her. She would later tell him that the orgasms he evoked in her had been intensified by her feeling his strong desire to pleasure her.A massive orgasm grabbed hold, contorting her body into a near fetal position. She collapsed back, gasping for breath, her tits heaving. He climbed atop her and her lips were aflame as they sought his, her hands pulling him closer. He raised himself on strong, sinewy arms, his dark eyes filled with desire, an emotion he broadcast like a thousand-watt transmitter. She felt the heated tip of his cock at her entrance. She wanted him inside of her so badly but suddenly she felt hesitant, almost ashamed."Kurt?""Yes?""I-I haven't...I mean... this is my first... time.""I kinda figured as much.""Is that acceptable?""Only if you are okay with me being your first."The look she gave told him the answer to that. Without another word, he slowly began to ease himself inside her. Pain shot through her as muscles stretched and fibers tore. She wanted this more than anything but could not hide the look of pain on her face as her eyes scrunched shut. He stopped."You, okay?""Y-yes," she breathed."Should I stop?""No!" she nearly shouted, her eyes flying open and locking with his. Then more gently, "No, please keep going."Curt was hesitant now. He was barely inside of her and she was already incredibly tight. He worried they might not be physically compatible and as much as he wanted to make love to her, he also didn't want to cause her any undo harm.Eza felt his empathy and concern for her. It made her heart valve swell, made her desire him even more.

Surviving a Crash.Based on the post by x sociate23, in 3 parts. Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories. As Cadet Cockman regained consciousness, he became aware of two things: the throbbing in his temples and the acrid smell that stung his nose and throat. His blurry vision gradually focused to look about the dimly light cabin. Red emergency lights slowly strobed overhead, bathing the interior in silent pulses of crimson like the inside of a gigantic beating heart. The instrument panel was dead, the viewport a blank oval.Memories of the crash began to surface. The red-hot flames of reentry, the flaring of the landing jets, the rushing up of the ground. His hands still felt the heavy shuddering of the yoke, his ears still heard the terrible sounds of rending and tearing metal as they struck. Despite his best efforts, they had come in too fast and at too sharp an angle. The last thing he recalled before darkness was the lieutenant reaching to hold his hand.He turned his head and pain shot up his neck. His whole spine felt compressed from the violent bouncing as their ship had skipped like a stone. The Venusian was unconscious, her head flopped forward. The loose strands of purple that hide her face were turned an eerie black and he couldn't tell if she was breathing. When he took a deep breath of his own, he began violently coughing. All at once his mind realized the danger. The smell was the fire suppression system, designed to prevent the rocket from blowing up in the event of a crash. He had to get them out of there, the gas could be lethal if breathed in for too long.Slapping his harness release, he stood up wearily. His body ached, particularly the areas where the straps had covered him. He released LuNar from her seat and lifted her small frame over his shoulder. Her body was limp but still warm. He hoped it was a good sign as he carried her to the exit, snatching an Aid kit from the wall with his free hand, the other wrapped around her slender thighs.Lifting the cover, he punched the emergency hatch button, air hissing as the door fell open. Harsh sunlight streaked inside, forcing him to shield his eyes. He clamored through the hatch with his burden and stood on a raise mound of dirt to look around. They were in the middle of a green rolling plain, the undulating hills carpeted with waist high savannah grasses and dotting with scraggily trees here and there. The hot sun of CarterD2007 burned overhead as Cockman looked towards the direction they had come in from. A huge groove was dug into the dark earth, stretching for hundreds of feet towards the horizon. Small brush fires burned and smoldered, trees along the giant runt were sheared in half by tritanium wings. Parts of the ship littered the ground, their shiny metal surfaces glinting in the sunlight. He spotted a small clump of trees about fifty meters away. They looked as good a place as any, so he moved towards them at a brisk pace, careful not to jostle the girl in his arms too much. They needed a place to wait, not only for the suppression gas to dissipate but also due to the still slight risk of explosion. He found a clearing under one of the trees, its coniferous leaves shielding the blistering sun.He lay LuNar down gently, supporting her head. Unzipping her tunic, he felt for a pulse at the neck. There was no pulse. Panic gripped him as he remembered he'd barely passed his Venusian Anatomy course. Taking a chance, he placed his ear to her upper left tit, his face turned away from hers. He relaxed as he was rewarded with the rhythmic thump of her heartbeat as well as her shallow but steady breathing. He also couldn't help but notice how soft her tit felt against his cheek."Cadet Cockman?!"Her shout resounded through his skull as his head jerked up. She had an appalled look on her face."I-I-I was checking your heart!" he stammered, leaning away from her chest as she sat up."I bet you were," she said hotly, eying his crotch with a look of suspicion in her eyes. He looked down and to his dismay found his fly was open. She curtly zipped up her top and seemed to swoon. He noticed a cut on her forehead, a bead of greenish blood trickling down. She attempted to stand but he placed a restraining hand on her shoulder."Easy, Lieutenant, Easy.""I am not easy!" she howled, slapping his hand away. First the boob thing, now this. He only seemed to be making her more and more angry.'Perhaps Venusians don't like to be touched,' he wondered to himself. But she needed medical attention, cultural differences be damned."Ma'am, you're hurt, let me help you," he pleaded, reaching into the Aid kit for antiseptic and gauze. She eyed him warily but at last relented. He delicately dabbed at the cut. It wasn't very deep so she wouldn't need sutures. He removed the backing from a plastic-bandage and gingerly placed it over the cut."There, all better," he said, looking her in the eyes. Again, she seemed to calm down immediately as she spoke."Now it is your turn.""What?"She gestured to his left arm. There was a large tear in the uniform across the bicep, the edges already soaked through with blood. He'd been so worried about her that he hadn't even realized he was injured. He realized it now, though, as he painfully removed his tunic, peeling the sticky sleeve away from the wound. The gash was deep but thankfully the blood had already clotted. Lieutenant  LuNar dabbed at it with the antiseptic cloth. It hurt like the devil and he reflexively jerked away."Hold still," she commanded, gripping the elbow."Sorry, it just hurts," he whined."Don't be such a chimNar," she scolded."What's a chimNar?""I believe you Terrans call it an in-fant," she stated as she cleaned up his arm. The offended Earthling scowled as he watched her deft fingers apply auto-sutures, wincing as they pulled the wound tightly shut. She sprayed the area with liqui-seal and wrapped the arm in an elastic compress. Lastly, she injected a dose of Omni-biotic into his deltoid with a hypo-spray, giving herself a dose in the neck for good measure."Where'd you learn the Nurse Nightingale routine?" he wondered aloud, flexing the arm. The painkillers were already working."I was first in my field medic class at the Academy," she said proudly, puffing up her chest. Cockman had to restrain his eyes from flickering to the movement."Well, thanks for the patch up.""So I take it we crashed?" she asked, seemingly ignoring his gratitude.'Damn, not even so much as a thank you,' he thought ruefully, 'Stuck up much, lady?'"Unfortunately, Ma'am," he answered as he stood up, replacing his tunic but leaving it unzipped. He then helped her to her feet, "It should be alright to head back for supplies."They moved towards the downed craft, Cockman in the lead. As they came closer, LuNar stopped suddenly, staring towards the cockpit. Thinking she had seen something; he followed her gaze and it took him a moment to realize she was staring with loathing at the Pinup portrait. It was another survivor, her scantily clad blue skin nearly free of blemishes. At last, LuNar huffed, held her head high and stoically strode past Cockman and into the ship. The Earthman cast one last glance at the vulgar Venusian before he too boarded.Feeling TerribleThey spent the rest of the day, which the records they had consulted before the crash said were approximately twenty-six Earth hours, salvaging what supplies they could. The HAB unit was first and was thankfully pretty idiot-proof. It was a self-contained unit that with the simple push of a button would unfurl into a plasticine igloo twenty feet in diameter. They cleared a space for it near the ship and filled it with other essentials. Rations, sleep sleeves, inflatable mattresses, a couple of Zapper pistols, an AC/heat unit; all of it found a home in the small space. The last thing Cockman brought in was a portable, battery powered sub-space radio. With their shelter secure, the next issue was finding a source of water. Luckily, a scout of the area found a pond nearby and a spectro-analysis found the water potable. The pair bedded down for the night, thoroughly exhausted.Eza awoke the next morning feeling terrible, her body aching and throat irritated from the suppressive gas they'd breathed the day before. She lay on her bunk, staring at the ceiling as she thought about the strange dream she'd had. She could not recall the specifics except that it had involved Cadet Cockman and was very pleasant. She looked over at his bunk and became concerned when she saw he was not there, his sleep sleeve neatly rolled up.'Why did he not tell me he was leaving the HAB,' she wondered. It was protocol after all. She saw that he had taken one of the Zapper pistols and she rose to strap the bulbous pistol in a holster that hung low on her wide hips. She walked out into the bright morning sunlight which was already heating up the landscape considerably. She spotted him elbows deep in the manifold of the ship. He appeared to have been up for hours working and as he stood erect, Eza noticed that he was shirtless. His well-defined muscles rippled and flexed as his stretched, absently scratching at his wounded arm. She suddenly felt flush as he bent over once more, his ass shifting in the tight confines of his trousers. Realizing she was staring, she turned away to head back inside when all at once she saw it.Where once had been a disgraceful depiction of a half-naked Venusian was now a large swath of black paint. He had taken the time out to cover the offensive image. Her gaze fell upon him and the rush hit her once more. It was a deep, primal, carnal sensation.'No, not now. Not him,' she thought with a mix of excitement and distress. Her breathing grew laborious as she watched him, a fire beginning to smolder in her core. She fought down the urge as she watched him lay down on his back under the canopy, sweat dribbling down the channels of his chest and abs.He noticed her and waved. Her breath caught in her throat as the wave surged through her, threatening to overwhelm her. She darted back inside, leaning heavily against the interior wall, trying desperately to clamp down on the urge, her loins ablaze. She had felt this before but now it was much more intense. She had to be careful or he might find out.RationsCadet Cockman was getting the distinct impression that Lieutenant  LuNar was ignoring him. Truth be told she was but not for the reason he was thinking. They had spent their second day on planet separately. He busied himself with work on the ship while she had stayed in the HAB, reading her holopad which had also survived the crash. Now it was evening, and they sat on their bunks eating their assigned rations. Cockman shoveled another spoonful of glop into his mouth that the label claimed was tuna noodle surprise, the surprise being it was moderately palatable despite looking like Martian yak barf. LuNar, meanwhile, was eating what looked like split-pea soup out of a collapsible, self-heating bowl. She had her back to him, just like she had done each time he was in the room with her. He was starting to feel like he had committed some egregious intergalactic faux pas when she finally put down her bowl and turned to him."Cadet, I wish to apologize for my behavior yesterday. You were only trying to help, and I should not have gotten angry with you.""Think nothing of it, Ma'am," he replied, swallowing another bit of mystery meat, "But in the interests of avoiding a repeat, might I ask what it was I said or did that upset you?""It was not you, it was me. I should not let some stupid nickname both..."She looked away as if suddenly realizing she'd said too much. Now his interest was thoroughly piqued."Nickname, Ma'am?" he asked, not really expecting an answer. He heard her sigh, the tone sounding like a violin string."It is from my Academy days. During my sophomore year, a Terran boy wished to court me, but I had politely declined. He then spread the rumor that Venusian females are promiscuous. So, they started to call me Easy LuNar."Cockman frowned sympathetically. He understood where she was coming from, with a name like Cockman, you learn to expect the dick jokes. He also felt sorry for her. She was an intelligent, dedicated, not to mention exceedingly beautiful woman and did not deserve the ridicule of some callous, sex-hungry asshole."I think Eza is a nice name," he said and found he genuinely meant it."Thank you, Cadet.""Curt. Just call me Curt.""Okay, Kurt," she trilled. Then she smiled for the first time and his heart seemed to skip a beat at the sight. The smile widened as she added, "I think that is a nice name as well."Staring at the HolopadOn the morning of the fifth day, Curt awoke to find Eza sitting up in her bed and staring at her holopad with a look of sadness on her blue face. There were tears in her eyes and when she noticed him watching, she hurriedly put away the pad. She turned to wipe away the tears, explaining that she was just not feeling well that day as she headed outside intent upon some nonsensical errand. For some reason the excuse worried him, namely because he knew that Venusians rarely, if ever, got sick. While she was away, Curt stole a peek at her holopad. It was wrong for him to pry into her personal life, but they were in this together. To survive, they both needed to be at the top of their game, not bogged down in depression. Yet what he found now left him feeling hollow. There on the screen, just as she had left it, was the image of a handsome blue skinned Venusian male.'Her lover,' he surmised, feeling a pang of jealously but immediately chiding himself for it. It made no sense for him to feel that way since he barely knew her and yet the feeling was still there. He also realized his first impressions of her had been all wrong. She wasn't some uptight, bossy, know it all. She was a vibrant, feeling woman and she was homesick.Looking again at the picture, he suddenly felt the need to make her feel better about their predicament. She avoided him most of that day and it wasn't until that evening when she sat staring at her holopad once more that he saw his opening. He spoke up, trying not to sound too gruff and unfeeling."You miss your family, huh?" he asked. She seemed hesitant to respond. Perhaps it was another Venusian taboo."Yes," she said at last, sighing."Anyone in particular?" he asked, secretly dreading the answer."My brother, Edrin," she said, showing him the picture. She was curious about the seeming look of relief on the Earthling's face."Don't worry, we will get you home to him," he assured her."Yes, but not in time.""In time for what?""My hatch date.""Is that anything like a birthday?""Yes," she said, suddenly remembering that unlike her kind, Terrans gave live birth."When is it?""Tomorrow.""Is it wrong for me to ask how old you'll be?""Not at all. Let me think...Venus has a shorter yagra," she said, using the Venusian equivalent for years, "So, eighteen Earth years."Curt was dumbfounded. She seemed so mature, was even a higher rank than him and yet she was barely legal. A thought also occurred to him, but he kept it to himself. He already had everything he needed for it."Well, if it's any consolation, I'd like to wish you a Happy Hatch date.""Thank you, Kurt," she replied, once more tripping over his name.He waited until she fell asleep, then set about on his self-imposed task. The next morning, Eza awoke, feeling depressed knowing that today was her hatch date but that she could not be with her family to celebrate. She especially missed her broodmate, Edrin. As she sat up, she felt her hand brush something hard. She was surprised when she saw what lay on her bed.It was a wood burned etching of Edrin on a piece of stiff bark. The likeness was decent for free hand and she realized with amazement that Curt must have spent all night long on it with only a laser bolt remover to work it. She looked over at him on his bunk. The morning sunlight shone down through the skylight of the dome, alighting upon his handsome face as he slept and she smiled as the stirring swelled once more within her. She realized with satisfaction that she was no longer averse to the feeling. She wanted him.Customs and PracticesThere seemed to be a shift in their dynamic. No longer were they superior and subordinate. They treated each other as equals, though they kept to themselves for the most part. Eza also seemed out of her funk, literally letting her hair down. She began wearing it unencumbered, the long purple locks cascading down in loose ribbons and curls. The change only added to her alien beauty and Curt was finding it harder and harder to concentrate when she was around.Just like now. It was the heat of the day, and he was trying to nap on his bunk. Try as he might, though, he just couldn't help glancing her way every few minutes. She sat on her bunk with her back to him, her feet tucked under her bottom. He could still see her face in profile, the text on the holopad in her lap reflected in her deep green eyes. A smile threatened to curl the edges of her lips. He stared at her hair, imagining running his fingers through it as he kissed her dark, ripe mouth. His eyes traced the sinuous curves of her back, settling on the round bulge of her ass. Her hand seemed to tremble as her fingers scrolled the text. He'd had enough, his curiosity aroused more so than his manhood.

He was 18 years old when he wrote this story in 1938, it wasn't published until 1942, under a pseudonym. Perhaps because he used a pseudonym he forgot that this story was ever published and so, assuming it had been rejected and believing he no longer had a copy of it he didn't include it in a collection of his earliest stories in 1972. In that book he listed today's story among the eleven of his short stories that has been lost forever.Seven years later in 1979 while writing the first volume of his autobiography he came across an entry in his diary that reminded him that the story had indeed been published. This story truly is “lost sci-fi”. "Princess of Mars" is a science fiction novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and first published in 1912. It is the first book in the Barsoom series and is known for its imaginative portrayal of an alien world, adventure, and romance. Here's an overview and analysis of "Princess of Mars":Plot Summary: The story is set in the late 19th century and centers around the protagonist, John Carter, a former Confederate soldier who finds himself mysteriously transported to the planet Mars, known to its inhabitants as Barsoom. On Barsoom, Carter's Earthly physique gives him superhuman strength and agility due to the lower gravity. He soon becomes embroiled in the planet's conflicts.Carter becomes involved in a complex Martian political landscape. He encounters various alien races, including the Tharks (a four-armed, green-skinned species), and the Red Martians, which includes the titular "Princess of Mars," Dejah Thoris. Carter and Dejah Thoris fall in love, and their relationship is central to the story.Themes:Adventure and Romance: "Princess of Mars" is a classic adventure tale with elements of romance. It combines action, daring exploits, and a passionate love story between John Carter and Dejah Thoris.Sword and Planet: The novel belongs to the subgenre of science fiction known as "Sword and Planet," characterized by stories that feature adventures on other planets with a focus on swashbuckling and swordplay. It often includes interactions between human and alien civilizations.Stranger in a Strange Land: Carter's journey to Mars and his efforts to adapt to a new culture, as well as his efforts to rescue Dejah Thoris, reflect the classic theme of "stranger in a strange land," where the protagonist is thrust into an unfamiliar world and must navigate its challenges.Style: Edgar Rice Burroughs' writing style is straightforward and action-oriented, making it accessible and engaging for readers. He creates a vivid and imaginative world on Mars with unique and diverse cultures and species.Impact: "Princess of Mars" is considered a classic of early 20th-century science fiction and has had a significant influence on the genre. It was one of the earliest works to introduce the concept of an Earthman transported to an alien world and has inspired countless later works, including the space opera genre. The character of John Carter has become an iconic figure in science fiction and popular culture. The Barsoom series, which includes eleven novels, remains popular among fans of classic science fiction and planetary romance. It's worth noting that while the storytelling and imagination in these novels are celebrated, they do reflect the sensibilities of their time, including elements that might be considered dated or problematic by contemporary standards."Princess of Mars" is a captivating and imaginative tale that combines adventure and romance in an otherworldly setting, making it a significant work in the history of science fiction literature.

When I first stumbled upon Mr. Smith I liked his work so here he is. George Oliver Smith, born in Chicago in 1911 was a consistent contributor to Astounding Science Fiction during the Golden Age of Science Fiction of the 1940s. His collaboration with the magazine's editor, John W. Campbell, Jr. was interrupted when Campbell's first wife, Doña, left him in 1949 and married Smith. Yea, that tends to mess up a relationship between friends. He wrote about 70 short stories and novels, most of them in the 1940s and 50s.  Today marks the beginning of several stories written by George O. Last time I remember writing about Varda co-founder and Founders Fund partner Delian Asparouhov, I was giving him a hard time about his subdued impromptu Clubhouse run-in with then San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin who he'd been flaming on Twitter. But since then, Asparouhov has mellowed out online. When I texted him after our podcast recording session and mentioned that his Founders Fund colleague Mike Solana was sassing me on Elon Musk's social networking platform, Asparouhov wrote back, “Bro I'm tryna do 3 jobs over here. I don't have time to pay attention to what Solana is up to.”Besides Varda and Founders Fund, I wondered what the third job was.He texted me back, “Fatherhood.”On the latest episode of the Newcomer podcast Asparouhov and I covered a lot of ground. We talked about Varda's satellite mission and its ambitions to manufacture in space. We discussed SpaceX's reusable rocket and the media conversation around Starship's explosion. Asparouhov mused about UFOs and missions to Mars. It was a wide-ranging conversation about space and technology. The conversation started off digging into Varda's excited research into LK-99.Varda ran an experiment which they initially thought might show verification of room temperature semiconductors.By the time we recorded our conversation, you could tell Asparouhov was more muted about Varda's findings.Later he tweeted, “alas, the rocks we made floated due to iron impurities.”Highlighted ExcerptsThe transcript has been edited for clarity.Eric: What is Varda's focus at the moment?Delian: Our goal is to take some of the research that's been shown on the International Space Station to have a ton of promise in terms of, as we've been talking about, solid state formulation. It turns out solid state formulation is significantly affected by gravity - that may also be true in superconductors. So one day down the line, if somebody does discover these formulations and they're showing issues that we think gravity could actually solve, there's a world where Varda flies a superconductor. You know, four or five years, definitely not anytime soon, given that the biopharma side is so much more preserved currently.Eric: I'm gonna be dumb again. To me, solid state is like hard drives. Is that what you mean by solid state formulation?Delian: If you look at what's happening both in superconductors and what we do in the pharma world, you're taking things that start as very fine grain powders or liquids and making solid state crystalline versions of them. In the pharma world that ends up looking like a little bit of table salt that you take, and it turns out that thing actually has drug cancer molecules and mRNA molecules. In the world of superconductors, it turns into these things that look like, I mean you've seen them on Twitter, they look like these kind of weird half ceramic, half metal objects. So solid state is just the form of the matter. Solid state in particular typically means a larger crystalline lattice structure, not just individual small molecules.Eric: The whole story of milestones you're talking about, what would be viable, reminds me of the SpaceX experience. Where a few months ago one of their rockets blew up. It's so hard as a layperson, even when cheering these things on, to know as an external observer what signs show the company's on track. What was your reaction to media like The New York Times framing the SpaceX explosion super negatively?Delian: I think the layman's view, particularly The New York Times, was clueless and off base. In aerospace, it's easier to publicly verify traction, unlike software where companies just claim things. You can see did the rocket launch? Did the spacecraft enter orbit? Those are physical facts. SpaceX is developing an extremely ambitious new rocket alongside their workhorse Falcon 9 that has flown over 200 times without exploding. This new rocket is riskier but more capable. It's interesting because even though Falcon 9 lands part of itself, it still loses the top section on every flight. So travel is expensive if you had to rebuild the cockpit after every plane flight. This new rocket Elon's making aims to be fully reusable to lower costs.Because it's so ambitious, SpaceX's approach is to test and fly rapidly rather than get stuck analyzing indefinitely. Their early Falcon rockets blew up but they learned. Nobody expected this new rocket to even get off the pad, but it went way further than expected before failing around stage separation. Calling it a failure seems crazy to me given this is the most ambitious project ever. It did way better than anyone thought, proving out concepts. Failures are part of pushing forward ambitiously. The NYT calling it a Space Shuttle-type failure shows cluelessness - this explicitly developmental rocket had no people aboard. To get to safe, you have to start unsafe and prove it out over time.Eric: How much does Varda depend on SpaceX's continued success in bringing down the cost curve? Could Varda work with today's cost of satellite deployment? Or are you counting on further reductions in deployment costs?Delian: At today's launch costs, where we're spending $1.5 to $2 million per flight, that is low enough for us to build a strong business around what we're doing now. So I'd say none of our models or thinking depends on future cost drops. Obviously I'd be thrilled if something like Starship came online, though I think that'll take time. I'd be excited for more players to start landing rockets - no one has really done that yet, even though it's been eight and a half years since SpaceX's first landing. So I'm not counting on it happening soon. We've architected our business so it doesn't depend on further cost reductions.. Get full access to Newcomer at www.newcomer.co/subscribe

On Ron's Amazing Stories this time we head to the planet Mercury with the IFP. Ancient astronomers had long suspected that Mercury always presented the same side to the sun, though they were ignorant to the fact that the little planet also had water and air. Complete silliness of course, but not in our story. I think you are going to love this one, and meeting the Mercurians.  Featured Story - The Earthman's Burden Our featured story comes from the pages of the pulp magazines. Specifically, the June 1931 edition of Astounding Stories. It is titled The Earthman's Burden by R.F. Starzl. It tells of Danny Olear of the Interplanetary Flying Police (IFP). There is foul play on mercury until Danny gets after his man. It is read for us by William Hahn from Sidney, Australia. Other Stories Include - Study In Ornithology, The Egg and Other Stories by Andy Weir, and The Earthman's Burden. Ask Mrs. Freda Dunny where her home town is.  Go on - we dare you. Adapted by Julie Hoverson from a short story by J. Anthony Ferlaine  (published in Fantastic Universe, November 1956) . Cast List Smiling Jim Parsons - J. Christopher Dunn Fred Dunny - Julie Hoverson Gertie - Tanja Milojevic (Lightning Bolt Theater of the Mind) Don Phillips - Glen Hallstrom   Music:  Kevin MacLeod (Incompetech.com) Editing and Sound:  Neil Gustin of Twilight Audio Theatre Cover Design:  Brett Coulstock Much thanx to Librivox and Project Gutenberg for curating stories, like this one, that have passed into the public domain. "What kind of a place is it? Why it's a TV Studio in 1956 - can't you tell?" ************************************* One out of ten This was a quick little adaptation from a story I read for Atomic Julie's Galactic Bedtime Stories.  It didn't take much to adapt, just a few tweaks, and I think I had to add in the actual questions, since that was just a "dot dot dot" in the story.  Otherwise, this one basically wrote itself. Atomic Julie, though, was my idea for some filler that has become my secondary series - I read old scifi stories that show up on Project Gutenberg - at gutenberg.org - that public domain treasure house.  I started out adding music to the stories, but people expressed a preference for just the reading, so I adapted.  Hey one less thing to do, right? Few people realize that I do all Atomic Julie's as cold reads, not even looking at anything but the word count and first page beforehand, as a challenge to myself.  It's also good practice. The biggest advantage to Atomic Julie is finding stories to adapt - or stories that inspire new ideas in my head.  And then I figured, if I'm going to be reading them anyway, why not read them aloud and then share them with everyone else? ************************************* ONE OUT OF TEN Adapted from a short story by J. Anthony Ferlaine from _Fantastic Universe_ November 1956. JIM    You're first. FREDA    [strangely certain] I know. SOUND    AD ENDS JIM     [disconcerted] Oh.  [up, to camera] Well, now, we're all set to go ... and our first contestant today is this charming little lady right here beside me, Mrs. Freda Dunny. SOUND    APPLAUSE JIM    How are you, Mrs. Dunny? FREDA    Fine! Just fine. JIM    All set to answer a lot of questions and win a lot of prizes? FREDA    Oh, I'll win all right. SOUND    LAUGHTER JIM    You sound pretty sure of yourself.  [chuckles]  Where are you from, Mrs. Dunny? FREDA    Mars. SOUND    LAUGHTER JIM    [a moment, then] Mars! [chuckles] Mars, Montana?  Mars, Peru? FREDA    [earnest]  No, Mars! Up there.  The planet Mars.  The fourth planet out from the sun. SOUND    UNCERTAIN LAUGHTER JIM    Well, well... well [rallying] all the way from Mars, eh? And how long have you been on Earth, Mrs. Dunny? FREDA    Oh, about thirty or forty years. I've been here nearly all my life. Came here when I was a wee slip of a girl.  Not a weekend getaway, then? JIM    You're practically an Earthwoman by now, then, wouldn't you say? SOUND    LOTS OF LAUGHS JIM    Do you plan on going back someday or have you made up your mind to stay here on Earth for the rest of your days? FREDA    Oh, I'm just here for the invasion.  When that's over I'll probably go back home again. JIM    [blank] The... invasion? SOUND    AUDIENCE MURMURS FREDA    Yes, the invasion of Earth. As soon as enough of us are here we'll get started. JIM    You mean there are others here, too? FREDA    Oh, yes, there are several million of us here in the United States already--and more are on the way. JIM    [faltering a bit, but trying to stay "on"] There are only about a hundred and seventy million people in the United States, Mrs. Dunny.  If there are seven million Martians among us, one out of every hundred would have to be a Martian. FREDA    Oh, one out of every ten.  That's what the boss said just the other day.  'We're getting pretty close to the number we need to take over Earth.'  [laughs] SOUND    MORE NERVOUS MURMURS, TITTERS JIM    What do you need?  One to one? One Martian for every Earthman? FREDA    Oh, no.  One Martian is worth ten Earthmen. The only reason we're waiting is we don't want any trouble. JIM    You don't look any different from us Earth people, Mrs. Dunny. How does one tell the difference between a Martian and an Earthman when one sees one? FREDA    Oh, we don't look any different.  Some of the kids don't even know they're Martians. Most mothers don't tell their children until they're grown-up. And there are other children who are never told because they just don't develop their full powers. JIM    Uhh...powers? FREDA    Oh, telepathy, thought control--that sort of thing. JIM    [back to humor - this is too silly] You mean that Martians can read people's thoughts? FREDA    Sure! It's no trouble at all. It's very easy really, once you get the hang of it. JIM    [joking] Can you read my mind? FREDA    Sure!  That's why I said that I'd know the answers. I'll be able to read them in your mind when you look at that sheet of paper. JIM    Now, that's hardly sporting, is it, Mrs. Dunny?  Everybody else has to do it the hard way and here you are reading it from my mind? FREDA    [complacent] All's fair in love and war. JIM    Tell me, Mrs. Dunny. Why are you telling me about all this? Isn't it supposed to be a secret? FREDA    Why not?  Nobody believes me anyhow.  Besides, I have my reasons. JIM    [grave] Oh, I believe you, Mrs. Dunny.  But we need to take a quick break and consult the rules - mind-reading might be fair in love and war, but this is television! SOUND    AD COMES ON JIM    I'll be right back, Mrs. Dunny. FREDA    I know. JIM    [really disconcerted] Right. SOUND    APPLAUSE SOUND    DASHES OFF JIM    Gertie? GERTIE    I've been on the phone with the big brass.  They don't take it very seriously, but they did say I should pull out packet 13 for her. JIM    [baffled] Packet 13? GERTIE    You know the one sealed and certified, in case of cheats like that fellow a few years back?  No one knows a single question in here until we break the seal.  JIM    But what if she--? GERTIE    I asked!  They said if she wins - well, gosh she wins. JIM    Even if she manages to ace the whole ten? GERTIE    Yup.  They figure the publicity is worth it. And you're on! SOUND    JIM DASHES AGAIN DON PHILLIPS    It looks like we have a decision! JIM    Well, Mrs. Dunny, we scoured the rulebook, and couldn't find a darn thing to stop you.  Guess there's just no precedent for mind-reading. SOUND    LAUGHTER FREDA    Of course. JIM    And now, let's see how you do on the questions.  Are you ready? SOUND    RIP OF ENVELOPE, CARDS PULLED OUT FREDA    Oh, yes! SOUND    AUDIENCE MURMURS JIM    I should point out, even I haven't seen these questions and answers before this very moment, so there's no possibility of collusion. SOUND    APPLAUSE JIM    Name the one and only mammal that has the ability to fly. FREDA    A bat. JIM    Right! Did you read that from my mind? FREDA    Oh, yes, you're coming over very clear! FADING INTO MONTAGE SCENE - TICK TOCK MUSIC, FADE OUT BETWEEN EACH PAIR JIM    A princess is any daughter of a sovereign. What is a princess royal? FREDA    The eldest daughter of a sovereign. SOUND    APPLAUSE JIM    Is a Kodiak a kind of simple box camera; a type of double-bowed boat; or a type of Alaskan bear? FREDA    A bear. SOUND    APPLAUSE JIM    And finally, who directed the 1925 silent film "The Crowd?" FREDA    King Vidor. JIM    [shaken] Very good.  That was a tough one.  Don Phillips, tell the lady what she's won! DON PHILLIPS    [in the background]  You get a lovely modern cyber-electric garbage disposal and a lovely gas range, provided by Savannah Ranges of Burbank. JIM    Gertie?  What just happened? GERTIE    I dunno!  The impossible? SOUND    FREDA APPROACHES FREDA    Mr. Parsons?  Perhaps you could help me carry my prizes to the car.  After all this is finished. JIM    [almost robotic] Of course. FREDA    You're such a nice fellow. GERTIE    You're what?  [incredulous] Helping?  Jim? JIM    [snapping back, searching for an excuse] I ... I just have to find out who put her up to this. GERTIE    Sure. MUSIC SURGES, THEN RECEDES DON PHILLIPS    join us tomorrow for another round of Parlor Quiz! GERTIE    Jim!  Morty Howard of Savannah Ranges has been calling for the last twenty minutes, to confirm the win, and wants an assurance that he won't have to shell out another one for at least three months. JIM    Later.  SOUND    HE TROTS OFF GERTIE    [calling after him] Jim? SOUND    OUTSIDE DOOR OPENS.  DISTANT TRAFFIC JIM    [calling] Mrs. Dunny? FREDA    [satisfied chuckle]  JIM    I want to talk to you! FREDA    When do I get the gas stove? JIM    uh... It should be delivered in a few days. Did you leave us your address? FREDA    Oh, yes.  My Philadelphia address, that is. I don't even remember my address at home any more. JIM    Come, now, Mrs. Dunny. The Moon Maid - Edgar Rice Burroughs - Book 32 Title: The Moon Maid Overview: The Moon Maid is a fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. It was written in three parts, Part 1 was begun in June 1922 under the title The Moon Maid, Part 2 was begun in 1919 under the title Under the Red Flag, later retitled The Moon Men, Part 3 was titled The Red Hawk. As evident from its name, Under the Red Flag, it appears to have been originally set in contemporary Soviet Russia, with the Bolsheviks as villains (when it was actually set in a future America, but under Marxist Soviet rule, the center of the story being in a future Marxist Chicago); as this was not popular with the publishers, Burroughs transferred it to a science-fictional setting, with the evil Communist-like "Kalkars" taking over the Moon (in the first part) and then the Earth (in the second part, with the help of a renegade Earthman) and being finally overthrown in the third part. The book version was first published by A. C. McClurg on February 6, 1926, under the title The Moon Maid, though it was shortened from the serial. The three parts have been published in varying combinations and under varying titles since 1926. After receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, Arthur discovered the field of Landscape Architecture. Although the field was beginning to take off thanks to the Olmsteds, Charles Eliot, and the Chicago World's Fair, there were no formal degree programs for the field. As a result, Arthur cobbled together his own curriculum at the Lawrence School of Science at Harvard. All his life, Arthur had a lifelong love for the outdoors. He especially enjoyed camping, canoeing, scenery, and sketching. Looking back on his pursuit of Landscape Architecture, Arthur reflected,   "All led me away from mechanics toward scenery, toward planning and construction for the scenes of daily life..."   In terms of his career, Arthur will forever be remembered for the work he did at Colonial Williamsburg. The project at Williamsburg was funded by John D. Rockefeller and the mission was a total community restoration. The scope was enormous. Arthur had over 30 years of experience when he started work on the project on St. Patrick's Day in 1928. In addition to his Landscape Architecture skills; Arthur leveraged his training in engineering, his meticulousness, and his personal energy, and charm. It wasn't just the buildings that needed restoration; it was the land, the paths, the streets, the gardens, and green spaces. Arthur wrote about his daily quest to uncover the past. One entry said:   “Wednesday morning saw me in the old-fashioned gardens in the heart of the town. These old places… now gone to decay are filled with a kind of golden glory which is lacking in the new gardens. The old lattice trellises, ruined box hedges, and even the weed-grown paths seem to have the glamor of the sunshine from the olden days.”   Every aspect of the town was fully researched. When it came to garden plans and plant selection, Arthur insisted that authenticity was paramount. For example, Arthur’s team actually searched for original fence-post holes to determine the colonially-accurate backyard.  It’s no wonder that it took Arthur 13 years to finish the project. Arthur’s signature plant was the boxwood which he called Box for short. Williamsburg required boatloads of Box and Arthur wrote,   “In replanting Williamsburg places much use should be made of Box… even allowing it to dominate the parterres and bed traceries… Generous use of Box in this manner [will define the] display and [help with the] upkeep of flowers especially in the dry season...”   Arthur’s passion could get the best of him. The woman who lived at the St. George Tucker House, wrote this entry in her diary in January 1931: “Today I was asked to go over the yard with Mr. Arthur Shurcliff… I found him a very alarming person! Somehow the idea of changing the yard and garden is much more repellent to me than changing the house, and this is such a terribly enthusiastic man!”   And, when Arthur returned in May, she wrote,   “[He came] down like a wolf on the fold again today. He rushed in and out... with charts and plans for all sorts of alarming ‘landscapes’ in our yard. He has boxwood on the brain.”   Luckily for Arthur, his charm counteracted any hesitance caused by his exuberance. When Colonial Williamsburg was revealed to the public in 1934, Arthur’s Colonial Revival style gardens — complete boxwood — caused a sensation. Soon, Revival Garden design appeared in suburbs all across America. Once the restoration was complete, Arthur Shurcliff had redefined Williamsburg. By reclaiming the past, Colonial Williamsburg found a path forward. And, thanks to Arthur’s incredible efforts, Revival Garden design took its place in 20th Century Landscape Architecture.   November 12, 1972   On this day The Greenville News shared an article called Orchidist Finds Hobby Versatile. The orchidologist was Gilbert L. Campbell. During six years of collecting, Gilbert amassed more than 300 plants - in addition to a library of orchid reference materials. Orchid lovers can grow orchids all year long indoors in their homes. When Gilbert’s passion outgrew his house, he built a greenhouse and in a short time, he built a second greenhouse. Gilbert said,   "Some orchidologists do grow their flowers in their homes... [but I advise against it. Growing an orchid is like being a fisherman. 'Some fishermen may be content to sit on the bank and fish, but most want to get out in a boat on the lake. It's a lot easier to grow orchids in a greenhouse [due to temperature and humidity control]. ”   As for why Gilbert had two greenhouses, his answer was simple: the cool greenhouse was for cymbidium orchids and the “medium” temp house was for the cattleyas. To show how significant the role temperature plays in growing orchids, the difference in temp between Gilbert’s two greenhouses was about 10 degrees. Gilbert reported that,   “A medium house has a minimum temperature of 55 to 60 degrees and a cool house has a minimum of 45-50 degrees.”   Finally, Gilbert advises plenty of fresh air. Gilbert’s orchids are moved outside in summer and on balmy days throughout the winter. Gilbert says:   "Orchids, like people, do best in a spring-like fresh-feeling atmosphere… Beginners should start with a few mature plants. Orchids like dry roots, so they should be watered thoroughly, then allowed to dry out."     November 12, 2013 Today is the anniversary of the death of the World War II hero and garden historian and restorer extraordinaire Mavis Batey, who died at the age of 92. Mavis broke the German Enigma code, which allowed the Allied forces to stage their D-Day invasion. In the back half of her life, Mavis became a champion for forgotten, yet historically significant, English gardens. She also became a garden historian and writer, writing books on Jane Austen and Alexander Pope. In 1955, Mavis and her code-breaker husband Keith settled on a farm in Surrey. The property sparked Mavis’s passion for Landscape history. After moving to Oxford, Mavis and her family lived in a fantastic park designed by Capability Brown. The park was also home to a garden designed by William Mason in 1775. Mavis recalled:   "We lived in the agent's house, right in the middle of a Capability Brown park, but it was William Mason's garden that really got me. We had to cut our way into it. It was all overgrown, and garden ornaments were buried in the grass. I knew at once it wasn't just an ordinary derelict garden: someone had tried to say something there."   Mavis Batey used her wit and determination to become a force in numerous conservation organizations and missions like the Garden History Society, the Campaign to Protect Rural England, and English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. In 1985 Mavis was honored with the RHS Veitch Memorial Medal for her invaluable work preserving gardens that would otherwise have been lost to time.   Unearthed Words If you plant spring bulbs, I hope you remember to include hyacinths. The hyacinth is in the asparagus (Asparagaceae) family. Native to the Eastern Mediterranean, they grow throughout Asia Minor, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. Nowadays, the hyacinth is mainly grown in Holland.   If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft, And of thy meager store, Two loaves alone to thee are left, Sell one, and with the dole Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul. — Saadi, Persian Sufi poet, in Gulistan (The Rose Garden), 1258   Grow That Garden Library The Seed Garden by Lee Buttala, Shanyn Siegel, et al.  This book came out in 2015, and the subtitle is The Art and Practice of Seed Saving. The Seed Garden won the American Horticultural Society Award for Excellence In Garden Book Publishing and it is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to save seed that is true-to-type and ready to sow in next year’s garden. Readers will learn the invaluable tradition of saving seeds for more than seventy-five best-loved vegetable and herb crops―from heirloom tomatoes and beans to lettuces, cabbages, peppers, and grains. I love the photos in this book - they are beautiful and relatable. The plant profiles are nicely laid out and the seed saving instructions are crystal clear - providing a thorough master class level presentation of the art, the science, and the joy of saving seeds. This book is 350 pages of indispensable and clearly written advice for growing plants and saving seed - and it’s a beautifully illustrated resource to boot. Henry wrote mainly about gardening and miscellaneous aspects of his daily Washington life.  Pragmatic and humorous, Henry’s garden advice struck a chord with his readers. His weekly garden advice was compiled into two bestsellers named after his column Earthman. A southerner and a gentleman, Henry found tranquility and restoration in his garden. Like most of us gardeners, Henry had his favorites. Of the Japanese Iris, Henry wrote,   “[It’s] a fine flower for anybody who thinks nothing can be too gaudy, too overstated, too imperial. I have known rednecks who adored it.”   A dog lover, Henry recognized his garden didn’t exist in a bubble but was fully part of the natural world. Henry reflected,   “Squirrels eat a lot of bulbs -- they are in heaven when they find the cyclamen and crocuses -- but they keep the garden interesting for the family dog... And besides, the squirrels are more attractive than the cyclamen probably would have been anyway."   And, Henry's obituary in the Washington Post shared his love of gardening:   “Gardening was a part of his life almost from the time he was born. When he was a small boy, he would pick up autumn leaves or pluck the petals from tiger lilies and admire them when his mother took him walking. He had a garden from the time he was old enough to work in it. He could rattle off the Latin names of perhaps 3,000 plants. He said, he learned about gardening because he was "passionately fond of flowers." The failure of such projects as grafting a carnation onto a prickly pear cactus left him undaunted.”   And, if you have a steadfast love your garden - warts and all - you’ll feel a kinship with these words by Henry from his 1992 book One Man's Garden:   It is agreeable to waddle about in one's own paradise, knowing that thousands of others have better gardens with better thises and thats, and better grown too, and no weeds at all… To know this and grin as complacently as a terrier who just got into the deviled eggs, and to reflect that there is no garden in England or France I envy, and not one I'd swap for mine: this is the aim of gardening — not to make us complacent idiots, exactly, but to make us content and calm for a time, with sufficient energy (even after bitter wars with bindweed) to feel an awestruck thanks to God that such happiness can exist. For a few days, of course.

He explains how "washi" is in a sense the world's most "sustainable paper", since its paper you can wash. He also explains to Nick what "up-cycling" is and how the t-shirts created specifically for his Kickstarter backers are made out of this unique system of "up-cycling". Ian explains to Nick the importance of mindset in regards to understanding why we have the products we do, and to understand what happens to these products once they are used. That we must consider the "story" of products in front of us in regard to where they come from and where they are going. By understanding what is around us, we can then understand how we can change our daily routines in order to live a lifestyle that is more aware of the holistic picture of what makes our everyday life. Ian's advice in regards to what the average person could do in regards to making immediate changes would include, but not exclusive to; eat less/no meat, use renewable energy, use less disposable bottles, ride fewer planes, and help protect and restore forests. The two discuss nuclear energy, and how its a very divisive issue without a concrete answer, especially in Japan that has historic trauma in regards to nuclear power, and is in a geopolitically precarious location. Ian and Nick then discuss renewable energy. The advantages/disadvantages as well as the general question of whether "alternative energy" alone is a resolution to our environmental issues. Ian explains to Nick the root of where his passion for environmentalism came from, and how it a series of events, from his childhood all the way to the present day, which had molded him to become the environmentalist he is today. The two discuss "Earthman" (Article with "Earthman" from France). Ian explains to Nick how "Earthman" started around 6-7 years ago by him, and is now part of any climate March in Japan today walking in the front row. Clifford loved gardens and had a passion for plants and plant collecting. His work with the Dutch East India Company had made him quite wealthy, and he could afford to purchase the latest plants discovered from around the world in the early 1700s. Clifford invited a young Swedish naturalist to come and stay at his estate. Over two years from 1736 to 1738, Carl Linnaeus helped Clifford with his plant inventory, and he cataloged his vast herbarium. Clifford’s estate gave Linnaeus a treasure trove of botanical specimens, which became the subjects of a book - his early Botanical Masterpiece called Hortus Cliffortianus. The book is essentially an inventory of Clifford's plant collection. Today Clifford's herbarium is housed at the National History Museum in London.   1715   Today is the anniversary of the death of Mary Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort ("BOH-fert"). She was an avid gardener and botanist. She survived two husbands and had eight children. After she was widowed a second time, she focused all of her discretionary effort on gardening. The best horticultural minds of her time helped Mary with her efforts: George London, Lenard Plukenet, and William Sherard. Her next-door neighbor was Sir Hans Sloane, and when Mary died, she (like almost every plant-lover of her era) left her herbarium and other valuable botanical items to him. This is how Hans Sloane became a one-man Botanical Repository. Among Mary's many descendants are Princess Diana and the genus Beaufortia was named in her honor by Robert Brown.   1784  Today, David Landreth started the first American commercial seed business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. David and his family immigrated to Montreal from England in 1780. Four years later, David relocated his family to Philadelphia and named the company simply David Landreth. David was one of the first nurseries to propagate seeds from the Lewis and Clark expeditions. He introduced the Mexican Zinnia in 1798, the garden tomato in 1820, the 'Landreths’ Extra Early' pea in 1822, and the 'Bloomsdale' spinach in 1826. His son, David Jr, took over the business after his death. David Jr. was one of the founding members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which started in 1827. Today the Landreth Seed Company is the fifth oldest corporation in America.   1848  Today is the birthday of the German botanist and curator of Berlin Botanical Garden, Ignatz Urban.  He helped catalog the Flora of the Caribbean and Brazil. In 1986, Urban’s tombstone was moved to the Botanical Garden he helped relocate during his tenure. He lies alongside other well-known botanists in Berlin.   Unearthed Words Today’s Unearthed Words were written to delight little ears, which makes them timeless in my book. The theme, of course, is January.   Little January Tapped at my door today. And said, "Put on your winter wraps, And come outdoors to play." Little January Is always full of fun; Until the set of sun. Little January Will stay a month with me And we will have such jolly times - Just come along and see. — Winifred Marshall Gales, Abolitionist & Author, January   The sun came out, And the snowman cried. His tears ran down on every side. His tears ran down Till the spot was cleared. He cried so hard That he disappeared. — Margaret Hillert, American author, poet, and educator, January Thaw   January opens The box of the year And brings out days That are bright and clear And brings out days That are cold and grey And shouts, "Come see What I brought today! —  Leland B. Jacobs, Poet & Literature Professor at Ohio State, January    In January it's so nice while slipping on the sliding ice to sip hot chicken soup with rice. Sipping once Sipping twice. — Maurice Sendak, American illustrator, and writer of children's books (Where the Wild Things Are), In January   Grow That Garden Library The Essential Earthman by Henry Clay Mitchell Mitchell was a garden columnist for the Washington Post, and this book was the sharing of the many posts featured in his column. As a writer, Mitchell was down-to-earth and funny. As a gardener, Mitchell was down-to-earth and funny. This is why, for me, his book is a personal favorite. Here is an excerpt regarding his suggested New Year’s Resolutions for gardeners: “The days are now at their shortest, and the gardener should keep it in mind that his ill humor and (as it may be) gloominess is directly linked to this nadir of the year. All that is necessary is to hold on until spring or a few sunny days, which will surely come in January, February, March, April, or May at the latest. Meanwhile, several activities will help the gardener keep cheerful. Whenever it snows, go out with a broom and swat all conifers likely to be broken down by snow. Whenever there are ice storms, pull the window shades down. When Christmas gift plants… stop blooming, either give them conditions they require or else throw them out. There is no point making yourself miserable by watching a Poinsettia, Cyclamen, or Azalea died over a period of 3 months. Force yourself, for once, to order the varieties of annuals you want from a seedsman in January, so you will not find yourself in a snit in March. Decide those old gardeners are correct, who have been saying for the past few hundred years, that nothing is lovelier or more cheerful in Winter than common ivy, common holly, and common yew. And, you might add, junipers. Put a couple of logs in Lily pools to absorb or deflect some of the pressure of the ice. Do not chop holes in the ice. Fish do not need air holes. If it ever gets warmish again, admire the swelling buds of Elm, Ash, Azalea, flowering Quince. Make up your mind once and for all whether you will give space to a Pussy Willow Bush. Whichever you decide, decide, and stop being of two minds about it. Thank God you do not have to stay in the garden all winter like a blasted Snowdrop ( which should, incidentally, be showing some signs of activity within the year’s first month). Gardeners, on the other hand, will stir about April 8th. You can get a used copy of Mitchell's book and support the show, using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $3. Great Gifts for Gardeners RETON 20 PCS Black Color Heavy-duty Steel S-hooks for Plants, Towels $7.99 Package includes: 20 x S Hooks Heavy-duty steel with PVC coating for durability Great for hanging plants, towels, pans, pots, bags or dozens of other uses around kitchen and bedroom Hook size: Length about 3.4"; Width of open end about 1.2"; Thickness about 0.1" or 3mm The storage hooks can hold up to 40 lbs.; they are made to handle heavier loads.   Today’s Botanic Spark 1983  Today is the anniversary of the death of New Zealand botanist Eliza Amy Hodgson. Hodgson specialized in liverworts. Liverworts are nonvascular plants like mosses. Without a vascular system, mosses and liverworts don’t get very big. These are tiny plants to be sure, and worts are considered one level simpler than mosses. They grow flat on the ground and have large leaf-like structures. Like mosses, worts thrive in moist areas. The word "wort" means "little plant, herb or root" (St. John’s Wort, Pennywort, lungwort, and Bladderwort.) Long ago, herbalists likely thought one of the liverworts resembled a liver - and so used it as a medicine for liver ailments. Thus, the word liverwort means a "liver-like small plant." Now, the reason I chose Eliza Amy Hodgson to close the show today is that she is often shown in a photo, standing in front of a flower border with green foliage and white blossoms. The only problem with the photo is that Eliza is wearing a green hat along with a green dress that is covered in white leaves, which turns the photo into a bit of a Where’s Waldo - and it makes sweet Eliza look like her head is floating above the Landscape. So, here’s a thank you to dear Eliza - who gives us the good reminder never to have your clothes blend in too much with the garden - lest you, in an odd way, become part of the garden itself.

The fact that the character of Aaron exists in the Bible is fairly confusing to me. If Moses had a speech impediment why not just heal him instead of roping one more guy into the whole plot? How do Christians handle the holy pregnancy? The celebratory date of the conception is in early December and the birth in the end of the same month. Was it a super quick or really long pregnancy?   What does the word "begotten" as in "only begotten son" mean? Why do you think the doctrine of the Trinity is such a cornerstone doctrine even among Protestants and Evangelicals? It seems like it should have been a doctrine they might have wanted to jettison after breaking with the Catholic Church. Do you think the crucifixion story might have been invented as a away to console early Christians over the persecutions and martyrdoms they experienced? Watching a commentary on the Jack Chick tract "Earthman," I noticed that Chick specifically used the term "little animals" to describe God giving Adam and Eve skins to wear. Could he have been thinking of foreskins? Can you talk about the history of literal interpretation of scripture in Christianity and Judaism? Have there always been strains of it, or is it more--as I initially suspected--more of a Protestant development? What does Paul mean by â??braggingâ?? or â??boastingâ?? which he sometimes condemns, other times approves? Did the Book of Tobiut influence the NT? And might the gospels be other examples of overt edifying fictions? Theme music provided by: Peter Benjamin - composer for media www.peterbenjaminmusic.org peterbenjaminmusic@gmail.com

Flash! You know the rest. On this episode we took a look at the cult classic Flash Gordon from 1980. Neither of us had much previous experience with this movie and we both had different opinions at the end. Flash Gordon is a pretty straight-forward sci-fi tale of an Earthman sent into outer space where he encounters Ming the Merciless. He is tasked with overthrowing the maniacal ruler of Mingo City and preventing the destruction of Earth. This movie is like no other movie we’ve talked about on our list. We had a pretty good time talking about it, and we hope you enjoy the episode. Where does Flash Gordon rate for you? We’d love to know if it’s considered to be classic camp fun, or better left forgotten.
