Using PSK63 and RTTY, the exchange is signal report and serial number. The UK and Ireland DX CW Contest starts at 1200UTC on Saturday the 26th of April and ends at 1200UTC on Sunday the 27th of April. Using CW on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. UK and Ireland stations also send their district code. The SP DX RTTY Contest starts at 1200UTC on Saturday the 26th of April and ends at 1200UTC on Sunday the 27th of April. Using RTTY on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. SP stations also send their province code.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 17th of April 2025 Last week was characterised by increased Kp index numbers and severe geomagnetic storms, peaking at G4. These drove down maximum usable frequencies and disrupted DX contacts, especially on the higher HF bands. The solar wind speed increased from 380 kilometres per second to around 500 kilometres per second on the 15th and an increase in plasma density was noted as well. Subsequently, the Kp index peaked at 7.67 on Wednesday the 16th, causing visible aurora alerts in the UK. This was caused by a pair of CMEs that left the Sun on Sunday the 13th of April. We had a total of 22 M-class solar flares over four days, so a CME event was inevitable. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are a feature on the declining side of a solar cycle, so we could unfortunately be in for many more. According to Propquest, MUFs over a 3,000km path fell to below 18MHz for long periods on Wednesday the 16th, before climbing to around 21MHz at the end of the day. Meanwhile, the solar flux index fell from a high of 170 on Friday the 11th of April to a low of 148 on Wednesday the 16th of April. Next week, NOAA predicts that the SFI will start the week around 145 but could increase to 165 as the week progresses. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the 22nd to the 24th of April, with a predicted maximum Kp index of four. As always, keep an eye on solarham.com for daily updates, but more importantly, get on the bands, which are a much more effective guide to HF propagation! And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The current period of unsettled weather looks likely to continue into the coming week. This does not mean rain every day, but periods of rain or showers with some intervening drier spells. These drier interludes are not really dominated by high pressure, just gaps between the wetter periods, so it's unlikely to produce much significant Tropo. In terms of propagation, there may be some rain scatter, although it won't be very reliable. However, the prospects for meteor scatter are more promising with the peak of the Lyrids due on Tuesday the 22nd of April. It is worth checking up on procedures for meteor scatter working if you've not done it before and you may find a new part of the hobby to add to your operating schedule. The prospects for aurora continue to be raised by what seems like an almost daily supply of aurora alerts. Continue to monitor the Kp index for signs of elevated values, where Kp is above five, for radio activity. Early signs such as fluttery signals on the LF and HF bands may suggest it's worth looking on the VHF bands for auroral activity. As we move towards the new season it is good to get into the habit of looking for Sporadic-E. The Propquest website www.propquest.co.uk shows several useful components for analysing the Es prospects. If you look at the position of the jet streams shown on the Es blog tab, these can produce favourable conditions geographically to give a hint of the right direction in which to listen. The opening season typically favours 10m or 6m. EME path losses are now decreasing towards perigee on Sunday the 27th of April. Last Friday, the 18th of April, saw minimum Moon declination, so Moon windows will lengthen along with peak elevation. 144MHz sky noise starts this week very high but decreases to low as the week progresses. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

The Scam Stops Here: How ICA Is Restoring Trust in Global Communications, Podcast

Telecom Reseller

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 11, 2025

“This isn't just tech—it's protection for your mother, your daughter, your entire community. And no one else is doing it like this.” — Michael Gough, Intelligent Communication Assistant (ICA) Imagine a world where every ring, ping, or notification is trusted—and no one wastes time dodging robocalls or deleting spam. That's the world ICA (pronounced “Ikah”) is building. In a recent Technology Reseller News podcast, Michael Gough, Sales and Marketing Leader at ICA, previewed the company's upcoming live demo at the Cloud Communications Alliance's Cloud Connections Conference, taking place April 14–16 in St. Petersburg. ICA will demonstrate what Gough calls the first true AI platform in telecommunications—a system designed to make digital deception impossible, without violating privacy laws, introducing new FCC rules, or requiring user intervention. “ICA restores an era when users could communicate without interruption from unwanted calls, texts, emails, or videos,” said Gough. At its core, ICA isn't just another call filter or branded caller ID feature. It's a patented behavioral AI engine that uses graph neural networks to assess communication attempts across voice, SMS, email, and social media. It then blocks, redirects, or engages the sender—sometimes with a convincing digital assistant that wastes scammer time and discourages future attempts. In a live demo, Gough showed how ICA rerouted a scammer to an intelligent voice assistant that feigned interest, dragging the call out until it became financially unviable for the spammer to continue. Another demo illustrated ICA's intelligence in recognizing legitimate contacts—even scanning social graphs to validate the relationship between caller and recipient, proving its capability in real-time communication vetting. The need is massive: 29% of U.S. cellular calls in Q4 2024 were spam. Over 4.7 million robocalls were placed in January 2025 alone. In February 2025, Americans received 19.2 billion spam texts. Every day, there are 3.4 billion phishing emails and 160 billion spam emails—46% of all email traffic. While STIR/SHAKEN and branded calling offer some protection, they are limited. Branded calling works only on select mobile devices and is vulnerable to impersonation. STIR/SHAKEN doesn't always function when calls cross from TDM to IP networks. And neither applies to email, SMS, or social media. “Branded calling works on mobile, and STIR/SHAKEN only works part of the time. ICA enhances both—and works across all platforms,” explained Gough. Unlike point solutions, ICA is designed to sit across communication ecosystems. It integrates with carrier and platform infrastructure through APIs, simplifying global deployments. Built on open standards from the Camara project and supported by the ADURA API aggregation framework, ICA offers a single integration point for global reach. Whether deployed as a platform-as-a-service or software-as-a-service, ICA provides a crawl-walk-run path that helps carriers begin protecting their networks immediately. For a limited number of partners participating at Cloud Connections, ICA is offering full implementation at no cost. “We're offering a handful of select platforms a chance to deploy ICA free of charge—and we'll even help with implementation,” said Gough. What sets ICA apart is not just detection, but disruption. By making scams financially pointless—tying up scammer resources and blocking unwanted traffic before it hits users—ICA dismantles the economic model that makes robocalling, smishing, and phishing profitable. “With ICA, we're not just enhancing telecom security,” said Gough. “We're creating a future where communication is smarter, safer, and free from disruption.” To see ICA in action, catch their live demo on April 15 at the Cloud Connections Conference in St. Petersburg. The Ag Net News Hour's Lorre Boyer and Nick Papagni, “The AgMeter” started out the show by discussing  the impact of tariffs on US trade relations, highlighting that 70 countries are negotiating with the US to increase imports, aiming to reduce the trade deficit. The US and China have both imposed additional 50% tariffs, resulting in a combined 104% tariff on US imports. The Trump administration's stance on China was praised for its firmness. Concerns were raised about the economic impact on agriculture, with potential relief payments similar to those during the Trump administration. Additionally, the discussion covered the role of world central banks, the impact of port fees on wheat exports, and the ongoing efforts to reinvigorate the US shipping industry. In the second segment, Nick and Lorrie discussed the decline in California farmland values, with almond orchards dropping from $60,000 to $44,000 per acre due to water shortages. High costs of inputs like fuel and labor, coupled with poor commodity prices and environmental regulations, are straining farmers. The California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act and high water prices, which should be $15,000-$20,000 per acre but are $32,000-$42,000, are significant factors. The highest agricultural land values remain in Kern County due to effective groundwater management. The hosts emphasized the need for farmers to fight for better policies and support. In the weekly, Almond Board of California segment. The Almond Board of California's Head of Global Communications, Natalie Henderson, discussed the recent Bloom Tour, which targeted social media influencers and dietitians interested in health, nutrition, and sustainability. The tour, held in late February, aimed to showcase almond farming practices, environmental stewardship, and humanize the industry. Influencers shared their experiences, leading to 14 Instagram stories with an organic reach of 277,000. The event highlighted the importance of influencers in modern media and the need to build long-term relationships with them. The segment also promoted the upcoming Florida Citrus Expo, encouraging cross-industry collaboration and support for local farmers.

*This episode is in partnership with YSL Beauty*In this episode I'm joined by the incredible Juleah Love and Manon Ergin. Juleah is the Global Head of Brand Corporate Engagement at YSL Beauty and Manon the VP of Global Communication and Image. But what makes these women stand out to me is the passion and commitment that they have put into creating YSL Beauty's Abuse Is Not Love Campaign which helps women all around the world to deal with, learn about and escape abusive relationships.During the episode we talk about the making of "Don't Call It Love" , an incredibly hard-hitting short film that they released on International Women's Day and how they have turned the traditional idea of a fragrance ad on its head to help make the most important of points and educate as many women as possible. We also explore the lengths they have gone to to ensure that they can help women all around the world in the right way. (They work with experts and charities to ensure that they address each country's individual problems).Juleah also speaks from the heart about what to do if you find yourself in an abusive relationship and why you must never blame yourself! What really struck me when speaking to Juleah and Manon both before and during the recording was that this isn't yet another big brand "doing good" and paying lip service to impress consumers. In fact, I got the impression that the work that they are doing around IPV (intimate partner violence) has become larger and more vital that they ever could have imagined. These women and their team are fully invested and so incredibly passionate about the work that they are doing. If you'd like to watch Don't Call It Love, you can do hereIf you need help with IPV then you'll find lots of resources here

In the 2010s, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) began to mobilize an international media system to project Turkey as a rising player and counter foreign criticism of its authoritarian practices. In Talking Back to the West: How Turkey Uses Counter-Hegemony to Reshape the Global Communication Order (University of Illinois Press, 2024), Bilge Yesil examines the AKP's English-language communication apparatus, focusing on its objectives and outcomes, the idea-generating framework that undergirds it, and the implications of its activities. She also analyzes the decolonial and pan-Islamist messages AKP-sponsored outlets deploy to position Turkey as a burgeoning great power opposed to imperialism and claiming to be the voice of oppressed Muslims around the world. As the AKP wields this rhetoric to further its geopolitical and economic goals, media outlets pursue their own objectives by obfuscating facts with identity politics, demonizing the West to aggrandize the East and rallying Muslims under Turkey's purportedly benevolent leadership. Insightfully exploring the crossroads of communications and authoritarianism, Talking Back to the West illuminates how the Erdogan government and its media allies use history, religion, and identity to pursue complementary agendas and tighten the AKP's grip on power. They don't have to. There's this expectation that they will read it because they're an employee and you're talking for corporate. No. You're competing with Instagram and Hulu and whatever else. You can't write a 700 word wall of text and email it and think everybody's going to find that call to action somewhere in the 17th paragraph. You have to realize that you are not talking to employees in a vacuum. How do you think about the internet? What does the word conjure up? Maybe a cloud? Or the flashing router in the corner of your front room? Or this magic power that connects over 5 billion people on all the continents of this planet? We might not think of it at all, beyond whether we can connect our phones to it.Another chance to hear one of our favourite episodes, inspired by a question from CrowdScience listener Simon: how much does the internet weigh? First of all, this means deciding what counts as the internet. If it is purely the electrons that form those TikTok videos and cat memes, then you might be surprised to hear that you could easily lift the internet with your little finger. But presenters Caroline Steel and Marnie Chesterton argue that there might be more, which sends them on a journey. They meet Andrew Blum, the author of the book Tubes – Behind the Scenes at the Internet, about his journey to trace the physical internet. And enlist vital help from cable-loving analyst Lane Burdette at TeleGeography, who maps the internet. To find those cables under the oceans, they travel to Porthcurno, once an uninhabited valley in rural Cornwall, now home to the Museum of Global Communications thanks to its status as a hub in the modern map of worldwide communications. With the museum's Susan Heritage-Tilley, they compare original telegraph cables and modern fibre optics. The team also head to a remote Canadian post office, so correspondent Meral Jamal can intercept folk picking up their satellite internet receivers, and ask to weigh them. A seemingly innocuous question becomes the quest for everything that connects us... and its weight!Producer: Marnie Chesterton Presenters: Marnie Chesterton & Caroline Steel Editors: Richard Collings & Cathy Edwards Production Coordinators: Jonathan Harris & Ishmael Soriano Studio Manager: Donald MacDonald(Image: Blue scales with computer coding terms.
