Ep 037: Fitness And Fatigue: Coach Jim Laird On Why Tough Workouts Aren't Always The Answer And What HRV Really Means

The Quantum Biology Collective Podcast

“I'm not against hard work,” says coach Jim Laird on today's episode of The Quantum Body Collective Podcast, “But are you prepared for it and can you recover from it?” The body, he explains, only has so much energy, much of which is reserved to fuel vital bodily functions. So, many people go hard in their workouts thinking they're doing the right thing, while depleting themselves of energy required for the crucial recovery period. One major factor is our sedentary but highly stressed lifestyle. We don't spend our days building up our reserves with smaller daily activities like walking and sleeping according to our circadian rhythms, so we can't recover as quickly. That same lifestyle saps us of energy, trapping us in a vicious cycle, resulting in symptoms like fatigue, mental and physical burnout, and digestive problems.  One way to gauge how much reserve you have is HRV (heart rate variability) which gauges how balanced your body is between active and rest modes. Using tools like the Oura ring, you can also see how much your daily habits, such as drinking alcohol and missing even just a few hours' sleep, are affecting that HRV. Jim clears up what HRV is not, and what number you should be shooting for based on age and other factors.  Through small daily changes both mental and physical, you can build adaptability and endurance. These include even the smallest attempts to move more and get back in touch with nature.  Quotes “What happens outside of the gym has a bigger impact on what happens inside the gym than what actually happens inside the gym.” (3:48 | Jim)  “If you constantly have to push yourself further than you're able to on a consistent basis, if you don't have the resources to recover from that exertion, eventually, you're going to get yourself in trouble. That's where people end up. They can't get out of bed. The coffee quits working.” (7:54 | Jim)  “We're operating on this idea that we should have infinite energy, while also engaged in habits that are actively making our bodies unable to produce the energy in the first place.” (19:19 | Meredith) “Your body's in a constant state of adapting. The better you treat it, the better chance it has of adapting in a positive way.” (51:18 | Jim) Links Connect with Jim Laird: Website: https://www.stillmanwellness.com/ IG: @gymlaird To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org  To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com  To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com    Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“The average maximum security prison nurse gets more time outside than children do today,” shares Jim Laird, master strength and conditioning fitness coach with 25 years of experience. Today, Jim acts as the guest host alongside co-host Jackie Jolie, a recent graduate of the Quantum Health Practitioner Program level one, to talk about lessons learned throughout their careers from lifting weights to watching sunrises.  Jackie met Jim at a CrossFit gym. She was a college student doing all the usual things, barely eating, avoiding proteins and fats, and ignoring weight training in favor of cardio. Training with Jim changed her entire mindset, as she realized she could actually eat real foods and gain muscle tone while staying a healthy weight. When Jackie ended up with Lyme disease, Jim helped her again by introducing her to the world of quantum biology and the role of sunlight in overall health. She had been spending a lot of time outside working with horses, but had not known how the timing of sun exposure played a large role in mitochondrial health. Now they encourage others to think differently, showing people with autoimmune conditions and chronic diseases that healing can be as simple as getting reconnected with nature, seeing the sunrise, and helping the body become more resilient to everyday stressors.  The modern world is designed to limit our time in nature. Kids barely go outside to play, people work long days indoors, and all of this is viewed as normal. If you go back even just a couple decades, people were regularly spending time outside and there were much lower rates of chronic disease and obesity. It is important to lead by example and encourage others to connect with nature daily for their overall wellbeing.  Quotes “Our modern world is designed to pull us away from nature. If you go back even to 1970, and you look at beach pictures of 1970 or pictures from Woodstock, there were no obese people. None. Half those people didn't work out. Women in the 1950s, sixties, it was unfeminine. Marilyn Monroe was one of the first women to actually strength train. And what did they do? They spent a lot of time outside. They didn't eat the garbage that we eat now. They made most of their food from scratch. They mowed their grass. They lived an active lifestyle. They went to the beach. They spent tons of time outside. They didn't have screens. So our number one battle is to look at the awesome technology that allows us to have this conversation and help as many people as we can. How do we balance being in touch with nature with the convenience of modern life?” (17:19-18:19 | Jim)  “The thing that I didn't really expect was going to happen after you see all the physiological stuff is, I had a better ability of coping mechanisms.” (23:16-23:26 | Jackie) “The average maximum security prison nurse gets more time outside than children do today.” (28:02-28:06 | Jim) “In our modern world, we're going to need people that lead by example.” (37:52-37:56 | Jim) “How quickly could racism go away if we were teaching kids in elementary school that skin color is a light story? That your friend has genes that come out of Africa and their darker colored skin, because that body needs more sun than you do.” (56:24-56:41 | Jackie)    Links Connect with Jim Laird on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gymlaird/ Connect with Jackie Jolie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jolie_en_sol/ To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org  To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com  To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com      Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“If I can use multiple variables to make someone get better, that will be much more sustainable, and that person will be much healthier, explains Jim Laird, Strength & Conditioning Coach. In today's episode, guest hosts Jim Laird and Dr. Leland Stillman return to discuss adjusting your circadian clock during daylight savings and how light aids with athletic performance. Through their knowledge of quantum biology, they share what it means to be a quantum athlete and healthier individual overall. With our modern lifestyles, we are constantly indoors, negatively affecting our fitness and health. For instance, if we expose ourselves to blue light at night, our bodies believe its day time, which throws off the regeneration process of our mitochondria. Without proper sleep, we cannot optimize our physical performance and fulfill our athletic goals. To counteract this, find time to go outside and take in that natural light our bodies are meant to have. Quantum Health is changing how athletes train. Learn more about how light boosts sports recovery, red infrared light's melatonin-boosting effects, and the types of devices Dr. Leland recommends. Quotes “We've built this modern lifestyle that's taking people away from nature, and eventually, people will have to figure out some ways to work around that.” (11:42-12:38 | Jim) “You've got to get bright, visible light during the day. And you've got to avoid blue and green light at night if you're going to have a healthy sleep for optimal performance.” (15:26-15:36 | Dr. Leland) “When it comes to athletes, what they need to understand is their performance is strongly linked to light signals in their environment because the stronger their circadian rhythms are, and the more light they're exposed to during the day, the better they're going to perform.” (22:47-23:04 | Dr. Leland)  “If I can use multiple variables to make someone get better, that will be much more sustainable, and that person will be much healthier.” (41:40-41:47 | Jim) “If you're not buying a lens that's dark red or orange, it's not blocking an adequate amount of blue light to protect your circadian rhythms at night.” (49:21-49:30 | Dr. Leland) Links Connect with Dr. Leland Stillman: Website: https://stillmanmd.com/ Instagram: @stillmanMD Substack: https://stillmanmd.substack.com/   Connect with Jim Laird: Instagram: @gymlaird   To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org  To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com  To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com    Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“More natural light, less fake light. That's really what it comes down to. It's that simple,” explains Jim Laird, Strength & Conditioning Coach. Today, guests Jim and Dr. Leland Stillman, an Integrative Physician, discuss the effects of quantum biology on fitness. Both experts in their field, Dr. Leland and Jim break down how everyday factors, including light and water, work together to keep you healthy or make you sick. When we are constantly inside and subjected to artificial light, we prohibit our natural circadian rhythm. Not only will we be subjected to disease and poor sleep, but we will not be able to meet our peak performance. Whether you are an athlete or someone who cares about your health, Dr. Leland and Jim suggest going outside to let your cells naturally regenerate and you will feel better in the process. Improving your quantum environment is the ultimate fitness performance hack. Learn more about light's effect on the immune system, improving your mitochondrial health, and why Dr. Leland moved away from conventional medicine. Quotes “I've created an entire business that brings people indoors, but what people really need is to be outside more.” (7:21-7:27 | Jim)  “When we talk about quantum, we're really talking about the smallest units of energy, frequency vibration, photons, electrical, magnetic fields, things that people can't sense, or are vaguely aware of, not the food you're putting in your body all that's related, we'll get into that later. But all these factors play a critical role. And then, once you've helped somebody create a healthy light and quantum environment, then you can begin to work with them too. Okay, what's the next tool we can use to get you to the next level of performance.” (10:13-10:43 | Dr. Leland) “When you optimize cellular energy generation, you optimize athletic performance, period, end of story.”  (27:10-27:15 | Dr. Leland)  “The insurance companies don't pay for you to be healthy. They're there to bail you out if something catastrophic happens. They have no real skin in your game.” (33:46-33:55 | Dr. Leland) “More natural light, less fake light. That's really what it comes down to. It's that simple.” (44:49-44:54 | Jim) “The fact is that with light, if you don't fix it, it can derail all these systems that will not respond to any other therapeutic.” (46:42-46:49 | Dr. Leland)    Links   Connect with Dr Leland Stillman: Website: https://stillmanmd.com/ Instagram: @stillmanMD Substack: https://stillmanmd.substack.com/   Connect with Jim Laird: Instagram: @gymlaird To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org  To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com  To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com    Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

2023 looks set to be another challenging year, and rising to those challenges is going to require innovation and new thinking about how the global food industry feeds a growing population. This episode Food Matters Live podcast is part of a short series shining a light on some of the start-ups who are shaping the future of the food industry. They are the big thinkers, with big ideas about how to solve some of the world's biggest problems. In this episode, we meet Jim Laird, CEO and co-founder of alternative protein company Enough. Enough grows ABUNDA mycoprotein, a fermented food ingredient which is rich in protein and fibre. ABUNDA is a highly versatile mycoprotein. It can be incorporated as a protein and fibre rich ingredient in established recipes or used to inspire new culinary creations. Listen to this short episode to find out more about the work Enough is doing, the company's ambitions for the future, and how investors and customers can get involved in their journey. Enough As a food-tech company whose purpose is “to make protein sustainable” ENOUGH passionately believes in the merits of fermentation as the most technologically and economically viable solution to sustainably feed a growing global population. As a team of 55 representing 17 nationalities, we want to do something that is “bigger than us” and are building what we hope will become the World's largest protein facility, located in the Netherlands and from where we will start to supply in early 2023, initially producing the equivalent of five cows worth of protein every hour.   ENOUGH's product Abunda® mycoprotein is a solution to make great tasting food that both provides an alternative and removes the need for the unacceptable impacts of intensive animal farming.  This addresses demand for non-animal protein that is forecast to grow by +15k tonnes every day for the next 5,000 days.   ENOUGH's current plans are not enough to meet a relevant share of this but with collaboration, we embrace the opportunity to go further and faster. Find out more by visiting the Enough website, emailing info@enough-food.com or following Enough on LinkedIn Jim Laird, CEO and co-founder, Enough As CEO and co-founder of ENOUGH, Jim has worked in the food industry for 30 years. This included supply chain roles running frozen beef and chicken factories in the early 1990s and managing the Quorn brand internationally in the late noughties. Jim co-founded ENOUGH (formerly 3F BIO) in 2015 and feels massively privileged to work with a team who span three locations and 17 nationalities, and who are motivated by a collective purpose “to do something where the impact is bigger than us”.   As a motivated reducetarian Jim continues to acknowledge the need for further improvements in the way that we grow and produce protein to make great tasting foods and celebrates collaboration as a means to achieve this goal.

This has been an episode I've looked forward to for some time. I could sit and chat with Jim for hours on just about anything, but when it comes to fitness you might be surprised where the conversation goes. You might think we dove into discussions around certain exercises or specific volumes to apply for specific training outcomes, etc. But you'd be wrong. Those types of things are important and certainly have their value, but what most people need in their training is much more basic. A quote from Jim that makes this make sense, "I have to train people to get fit enough just so they can train." As we have become indoor animals and neglected our own biology, people need to look at their health and fitness from a different perspective if they ever want to achieve the goals they want from training. I hope the perspectives Jim introduces concerning our basic fundamental needs as humans so that our physiology and biology will operate at full capacity will prompt some basic changes to your everyday routine (that offer huge rewards). Jim is one of my mentors in the field of strength & conditioning, who has helped shape my views and perspectives around training and life in general. In this episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman we chat with Suzanne Waldrop and former podcast guest Coach Jim Laird. Suzanne is one of Jim’s most inspirational and transformed clients so we invited her on the show to discuss her success with powerlifting. She shares with us her struggle with weightloss while training and running marathons, how she moved into strength training with Coach Laird, to become what she is now, amongst many other titles, a competitive powerlifter. For all us Type A personality females, this is a great inspiration story. One that reiterates the mere existence of this podcast, to cut through the clutter of information that is available through the media and the internet, find an expert that challenges you, gets your personality and that you can put your trust in to know they have your back. Most of us think that more is more. If we want to lose weight, we have to exercise more. But this is a myth. In the case of Suzanne, like many female runners, she got into running to lose stubborn baby weight. Going on training  4-5 mile runs, three times a week preparing for half and full marathons. But she still wasn’t happy with the way her body looked. She found Coach Jim Laird and started to see small changes with his strength training support. Once she adopted his nutrition advice of eating paleo, then she really saw significant changes, dropping 2 dress sizes in 4 months! So Suzanne wanted more…like most of us would. But much to her dismay, Coach Laird refused to work with her further unless she quit distance running. It wasn’t easy, but Suzanne agreed and soon she became competitive powerlifter and founded The Miss Fits, with a group of other ladies like her at the gym, and with Coach Laird’s encouragement of course. Sounds crazy right? Listen in on the podcast episode to hear Coach Jim’s reason. For more info on running and how it may not be providing you with the results you want if your goal is to look good, listen on our interview with Jason Seib- The Four Pillars of Weight Loss, Exercise. Running is a very therapeutic sport and finishing a marathon is a true accomplishment for those who want to run because it feels good and offers a great way to de-stress and clear your mind. For great marathon training advice, listen in on our interview with Angie Spencer, 26.2 Miles- Is Running Really All It’s Cracked Up to Be?   Tips for losing 2 dress sizes in 4 months These are the steps Suzanne took to get there: Stopped running Strength training Eating paleo Super motivated (she’s a Type A!) Asks her coach a lot of questions Keeps a log to compare herself to what she did in weeks prior and remind herself how far she’s come.     The Miss Fits is a fun group of women of diverse backgrounds brought together by the iron. Powerlifting (deadlift, squat and bench press), has helped them to find not only solidarity in each other, but also the self-confidence to be independent and strong outside of the gym. They’re blog shares their goals, triumphs, struggles and works in progress—under the bar and in their everyday lives. They love the advice and support we read on the blogs of professional trainers, but sometimes it helps to get motivation and “been there, done that” tips from peers. That’s why they started their blog. So if you’re ready to get strong and have fun, join these average ladies on their anything-but-average adventures with barbells, bench presses and everything in between.     Suzanne’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Health: Keep it simple: eat, train, sleep, repeat.   Jim’s 3 Habits to Ensure His Health: Sleep in a float tank a couple of times a week. As a reformed long distance runner, she says that she might just be the healthiest and fittest she’s ever been. Years of training for countless half marathons and one full marathon never gave Suzanne the body she wanted. She could run 12 miles on any given day but her weight was constantly up and down and she carried a lot of belly fat. Finally, Suzanne went looking for help and she met Jim Laird, owner and coach of Gym Laird Strength Conditioning. Suzanne describes herself as stubborn, type A, slightly neurotic, and competitive as hell which doesn’t exactly make for an easy client. Against Jim’s advice, she continued to run while she also attended strength training classes, but that only lasted a couple months. In April 2012 Suzanne finally agreed to give up all distance running and she has never regretted that decision. Today, Suzanne has become a passionate advocate for strength training for woman. She is a member of The Miss Fits, a group of average ladies who blog about their goals, triumphs, struggles and works in progress – in the gym and in their everyday lives. Suzanne also competes in powerlifting and holds multiple state and national records. Her personal records include a 292 squat, 121 bench and a 375 deadlift.   Links and Resources Find Suzanne Waldrop  at The Miss Fits Website | The Miss Fits Facebook Find Coach Jim Laird at Gym Laird Website | Email | Facebook | Twitter Check him out at the Body.io Podcast where he hosts every two weeks. There is a ton of great info in this episode with Coach Jim Laird. He takes a holistic approach to training, teaching people the difference between performance and health. “YOU’LL HAVE TO WORK IN SO YOU CAN WORK OUT.”   HOLISTIC TRAINING Formula for looking and feeling great: a) Lifting weights twice a week at your ability. Do just enough to allow adaptation of the body, just enough challenge. b) 30 minutes of cardio daily. Ie: walking, tennis, cycling, etc. b) Eat real food + healthy fats. c) Don’t eat refined sugar. When yo take your walks, walk to rejuvenate not to burn calories. If your body is healthy hormonally, mentally and emotionally, the fat will just come off. You don’t have to force it if you treat your body well.   TIPS FOR WOMEN Typical guidance for women just coming into Jim’s gym for training…usually they work 50 hours a week, have kids at home, are doing multiple sessions of bootcamp, sometimes 2 times per day…and not seeing results. Why? “YOU NEED TIME FOR YOURSELF, FOR YOU TO REST AND SELF-CARE.” Jim’s advise is to find that time. Self care comes first as well as eating real food and getting good sleep. He’ll recommend doing this for 4 weeks before starting a training program with him. Some people will do this for the 4 weeks and lose 25 lbs…just by taking care of themselves.   SIMPLE TIP FOR QUICK START RECOVER AND RELAXATION Jim asks his clients to either blow up a balloon or do some type of silent breathing before they head out the door, back to their lives full of stress and chaos. What good does your training session do if you are just going to leave in a fight or flight stage? Whether you are still amped up from your training session or running from a tiger, your body doesn’t know the difference when your sympathetic nervous system is on full alert. To combat this counterproductive phenomena from happening, Jim reminds his clients, young and old, to simply chill and act as if they are going to sleep while doing their silent breathing. This process not only takes a person from fight or flight to rest and digest, it also jump starts their recovery from their workout. To us, we would rather our clients be fully recovered after a workout versus not recovering from a workout, dealing with a busy life, and then coming to train again. It’s a vicious cycle that leads one down a tumultuous path. Check out a video on how to do this here: >> Balloon Exercise Technique It also helps relieve neck stiffness, , you become mindful, makes you feel better and is a great way to prevent road rage!   JIM’S BIO: Jim Laird has been working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach helping clients achieve their goals since 1997.
