FOLLOW RICHARD Website: https://www.strangeplanet.ca YouTube: @strangeplanetradio Instagram: @richardsyrettstrangeplanet TikTok: @therealstrangeplanet EP. #1318 The Face Knows: The Forbidden Science of Reading Power, Deception, and Destiny Richard Syrett dives into the forbidden art of physiognomy with Taylor Northcutt, founder of Prosopa Insights. For millennia, humanity read character, temperament, and intent directly from facial structure—not as random genetics, but as a biological record shaped by the same forces that forge dominance, empathy, deception, and will. Kings, judges, and artists once trusted this wisdom; then modern society buried it, dismissing it as pseudoscience. Northcutt revives these ancient patterns, exploring why certain faces inspire instant trust or visceral unease, how power etches its signature, and why early depictions of Christ follow precise archetypes. The conversation pressure-tests real-world figures—Jeffrey Epstein's predatory charm, Vladimir Putin's sealed restraint, Donald Trump's raw readability—and even doppelgängers, including Richard's own resemblances to Tucker Carlson and Kenneth Branagh. Culminating in the Shroud of Turin, they confront a provocative question: What happens when a civilization trains itself to ignore the truths written on the human face? GUEST: Taylor Northcutt is the founder and director of Prosopa Insights, a platform dedicated to reviving and applying physiognomy—the ancient practice of reading personality, temperament, and character from facial features. In 2024, he launched Prosopa Insights to offer personalized face-reading consultations, business consulting, educational content via his YouTube channel (@ProsopaInsights, with over 37K subscribers), articles, videos, and a Patreon "Physiognomy Academy." His work explores how faces reveal innate traits, often analyzing public figures, historical icons like Carl Jung, and modern personalities to demonstrate pattern recognition over pseudoscience. Northcutt positions physiognomy as a practical tool for self-awareness, relationships, and decision-making—encouraging people to "judge a book by its cover" in a grounded, observational way. Thoughts on Kenneth Branagh as a director, Robin Williams being talented enough to distract us from the exposition-dumping of his side role, showing love for the tropes of amnesia and hypnotism, and nostalgia for older thrillers from the 90s or so that were willing to go places (including Kiss the Girls and What Lies Beneath) arise as a few of the topics for this episode.Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Dead Again stars Branagh, Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, Wayne Knight, Andy Garcia, Robin Williams, Richard Easton, Jo Anderson, Hanna Schygulla, Campbell Scott, and Miriam Margolyes.Spoilers for What Lies Beneath start at 33:00 and end at 33:50Spoilers for Dead Again start at 34:40Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Andy: Candy Cain Kills and Candy Cain Kills Again: The Second Slaying by Brian McAuley• Arthur: Dinner in AmericaReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

This week, Michele Cobb joins host Jo Reed to dig into audiobooks built on backstory, beginning with Expert Witness, where Gabra Zackman delivers Anne Wolbert Burgess' account of trauma, justice, and the evolution of expert testimony with clarity and restraint. Next, they turn to A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever, a joyful, detail-packed oral history of the 1984 film Spinal Tap—an ensemble cast production led by Rob Reiner, where seemingly spontaneous commentary makes the audiobook the definitive way to experience the story. The episode closes with We Did OK, Kid, a reflective memoir in which Kenneth Branagh's elegant narration frames Anthony Hopkins's vulnerable reflections on craft, ambition, and a life shaped by performance. Together these audiobooks show how lived experience—whether in the courtroom, on a film set, or across a lifetime in acting—gains depth and resonance when shaped by a narrator who knows when to be restrained, playful, or quietly vulnerable. In this show, we are extending our ongoing Mike Nichols Marathon as our journey through his filmography takes us deeper into the 1990's where we finally take on the 1994 Wolf. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about this movie's positioning among other classical horror archetypes explored by other filmmakers (such as Dracula directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein, or Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear), whether this big budget production could be considered a comeback for the aging Nichols and how it reunited him with Elaine May. We also discuss the many readings one could apply to this film, ranging from commenting on the AIDS epidemic and corporate politics to discussions about masculinity and the director's own life trajectory, and we also explore the friction between the film's ambition and its own ability to deliver on character and theme development. Finally, we chuckle at Jack Nicholson's sharpened senses and find out that Jakub might not be able to pronounce the title of the movie correctly at all. Denzember continues with Culture Kitsch host Bobbi Miller joining us to discuss Kenneth Branagh's 1993 Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Following his successful Henry V adaptation, Branagh returned to Shakespeare for a much airier, light-hearted affair, fashioning the classic play into an immensely pleasurable studio romantic comedy while preserving the spirit and (more importantly) the language of Much Ado..., assembling a showstopper ensemble led by Branagh, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Denzel as Don Pedro of Aragon, nearly 30 years before he would take on The Tragedy of Macbeth.  We begin with a discussion of Branagh's formal tendencies, how his maximalism works for the genre, and illuminate his underremarked upon technical prowess. Then, we discuss what Branagh's Much Ado...  preserves from Shakespeare's stage, what it omits, and how these ommissions speak to the film's position as an End of History artifact interested in reifying traditional family values centered around monogamous, heterosexual couplings. Finally, we discuss how Denzel's Don Pedro is utliized narratively and thematically in the film, and how Denzel's movie star persona and race factor into our perception of the character.

You know when one of your reviews is "I'm not sure if Kenneth will break into song at any moment", you're either getting something that's gonna be awesome or bordering on disaster. This film is a mixed bag, which is ironic, because MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN, directed and starring Kenneth Branagh, is about a mad scientist who takes a bunch of dead bodies, stitches them together and brings them back to life. It's a tale as old as 1818, as they say. If the dazzling lights of contraptions pulsating, buzzing, and electrifying don't grab you, Kenneth's washboard definitely will!

[School of Movies 2025] "Adapting is like marrying a widow; You respect the memory of the husband, but at some point you gotta get it on." - Guillermo del Toro. In preparation for GDTs long-awaited take on Frankenstein we delved into some of the most significant onscreen versions of Mary Shelley's book. Taking our cues from the excellent piece by Overly Sarcastic Productions we recruit Gothic enthusiast Willow and together as a family talk you through the story, referencing different movies regarding how closely they cleave to the source novel, and how and why they choose to deviate. Many of the elements people take for granted, lightning, green skin, bolts in the neck, flat head, tendency to talk like a caveman all seem to stem from the 1931 James Whale film and its 1935 sequel starring Borris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester. Turns out that the monster, the creation or as he is sometimes called, "Adam" was, as-written a great deal more complex, something some films have expressed in the interim near-century, nearly all of the most significant we talk about, including the 1994 Kenneth Branagh version, the 2011 stage version with Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller, the Hammer Horror versions with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, Frank Roddam's The Bride from 1985, Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, and a surprisingly great two-part TV miniseries from 2004. Accompanying, we have a Cutting Class episode releasing this weekend with a bunch of other adaptations we talked about here but were trimmed out for time and focus, and we will of course be back to talk about Del Toro's version very soon.

Mostly Murder (But Sometimes Not)

New episode out now! We watched the 1991 neo-noir film Dead Again, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh and also featuring Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, and Andy Garcia. We wonder how we've never heard of this film because of the stacked cast, discuss how the personal history of Branagh and Thompson may have colored our perception of the film, get frustrated at the male ego and the need to be a hero, and debate how the movie would have felt with different actors. We discuss the concept of past lives and fate and how they were utilized in the story, think the old age makeup was terrible, have major issues with romancing an amnesiac, and debate the success of what the movie was trying to do. Katy pitches a TV show, Carrie got a warm heart hug while watching, Maddy wants to be in a weird old elevator, and Mack is not on Blue's Clues. We also talk about where we've seen the filming locations before, think the accents are not great, get annoyed at water, and mention Buffy multiple times. Listen to hear more about soulmates, Robin Williams, claddagh ring traditions, Georgia O'Keeffe, pronouncing “Jacobi” wrong, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Enjoy!TW: Infidelity, drug use, amnesia consent issues, fatphobia, domestic violence, animal carcass mention
