Ava Kaenel was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. The thing she loves most about high school sports is simply the friendships and experiences she has gained. The team dynamics are also something she loves about sports because they can come from any background or grade level and still come together and work hard for the love of the same sport. She would not have the friendships she has now if it weren't for high school sports. Ava is a three-season student-athlete and competes in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is also involved in FFA as the vice president, NHS as the treasurer, FCCLA, musical productions, the Montello Chamber Choir, the Academic Bowl Team, and participates in Solo Ensemble. She was selected as the 2024 November Student of the Month by the staff in her building. Through her participation in FFA, she can be involved in the community and its activities. She helps and plans the Montello Westfield FFA Alumni Wildlife Banquet, MHS 4th, 5th, & 6th grade Safety Day, the Montello Trap Shoot, and the Harrisville Sportsman Club trap shoot. This year she has also worked with her officer team to cook a meal for the families at the Ronald McDonald House in Madison. Although she does not come from an agricultural background, Ava has gained all her agricultural experience through FFA. She has plenty of respect for agriculture, hard work, and dedication throughout the industry. Without exposure to ag classes, Ava would not have become the greenhouse manager at her school. Although undecided, Ava is leaning towards attending Milwaukee Area Technical College and taking part in the radiology program in hopes of becoming an MRI technician after graduating high school.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Early voting is now underway, as Trump/Vance and Harris/Walz crisscross Wisconsin and the other battleground states. The first day of Wisconsin early voting saw record turnout of over 100,000 voters this Tuesday. What does it mean for the same day vote? We encourage our listeners to volunteer in Citizen Action's final voter contact activities on phones and doors talking directly to targeted voters we need to win. Are you with us? In spite of two “thousand year event” hurricanes less than two weeks apart, and the warmest September on record, the climate change issue is the worst casualty of the 2024 election season. Are voters not interested, or are politicians refusing to talk about it? The second most ignored issue in the 2024 election is the current hospital and health system crisis ripping a hole in our health care safety net. We discuss how the hospital closure crisis in Eau Claire is also shocking the Madison hospital system, and the latest mega hospital chain merger of Marshfield Clinic Health System & Sanford Health. We close by welcoming Milwaukee Area Technical College educator Luz Sosa to discuss the discrimination Latinos are experiencing at MATC and how it connects to Act 10 and the gerrymandered Legislature's chronic under funding of public education.

The Milwaukee community is reeling after the horrific death of 19-year-old college student Sade Robinson, whose dismembered remains have been discovered along the shores of Lake Michigan. Maxwell Anderson, 33, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and arson in connection with Robinson's death. Robinson, who was studying criminal justice at Milwaukee Area Technical College and had aspirations of joining the U.S. Air Force, went missing shortly after a dinner date with Anderson on April 2. A passerby found a severed leg in Warnimont Park along Lake Michigan in Cudahy, Wisconsin, initiating a grim search that led to the discovery of further remains on April 5, 6, and 7. While formal identification is pending, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office expressed confidence that the remains are Robinson's. The case has drawn chilling comparisons to infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, particularly from Robinson's mother, Sheena Scrabrough, who labeled Anderson as a "2024 Jeffrey Dahmer" on "Crime Stories with Nancy Grace." However, retired Milwaukee police Lt. Steve Spingola, who investigated Dahmer, noted that unlike Dahmer, Anderson left substantial forensic evidence and was quickly apprehended due to modern investigative technologies. "There's a treasure trove of forensic evidence that's left at his house. And on video cameras, and with witnesses, it's a little bit different than with Dahmer," Spingola told NewsNation. "Remember back in 1991, we didn't have any of that." Anderson was arrested on April 4, and is currently held on $5 million bail in Milwaukee County Jail. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Denita Ball, has indicated that they do not believe there are additional victims, but the investigation remains ongoing. Anderson's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday. This tragedy has not only shocked and saddened the community but also highlighted the potential dangers of dating and meeting new people. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information about the case to contact them through the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. As the legal proceedings advance, the community and Robinson's family await justice for a young woman whose life was tragically cut short under brutal circumstances. In a personal injury or medical malpractice case, the cost of future care plays a key role. Debbie Wuerl, a legal nurse consultant with a range of experience in nursing areas, specializes in personal injury cases and working with medical malpractice attorneys. She has particular expertise in working on cost projections This is not the same as but is part of a life care plan. Debbie focuses on future costs that derive from the injury or other conditions: medications, future surgeries, in-patient and outpatient therapies, and other expenses associated with the condition. While this involves carefully studying medical records, it can also entail personal investigation. She may visit patients in the hospital or in their homes. Particularly through home visits, she can gain a more in-depth perspective on the patient's needs. Some may have no one to drive them to medical or therapy appointments. She may learn that others don't understand what the doctors or other practitioners are saying and may go to the practitioners and recommend that they “humanize” their communications with the client. She summarizes her findings in an easy-to-read table format that begins her report. The accessibility of this information has, she says, helped to get many cases settled in mediation without trial. If you are looking for another way to employ your LNC skills, consider Exploring cost projections. This podcast will give you a good start. Join me in this episode of Calculating Cost Projections - The LNC Role - Debbie Wuerl What does “cost projection” mean? How does this differ from “life care planning” projections? What qualifications are required to do cost projections? What issues does a cost projection need to include? How can it be problematic to get the necessary documentation for a cost projection? Civil rights activist and education reform advocate Dr. Howard Fuller shares his powerful thoughts about what being unbought and unbothered mean to him – and what does bother him. Dr. Fuller also shares his approach to having conversations with people with whom you fundamentally disagree and why words have such power, including importantly with the students who attend the charter school he founded, Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy. Tune in to this remarkable conversation with a once-in-a-generation leader.Episode Highlights: 02:20 - I've always tried to make sure that I represented what I believed in, no matter what the consequences are. And I've always tried to be both honest with myself and with the people that I represent and the people that I'm talking to. And so in that sense, I've never seen myself as someone who could be bought off, someone who you could tell me what to say, versus I'm going to say what I believe, and then everybody has to deal with it. I have to deal with it. The people who are listening to me have to deal with it. But I always wanted people to know that whatever it is I said, it's what I believe. 13:49 -The reality is no one wants to feel unimportant. I mean, in fact, sometimes when a kid is going off in a classroom or in a building, sometimes it's because they're trying to say, "Look at me." They're trying to figure out a way for who they are to become relevant. 16:22 - Never be afraid to make mistakes, the only way you cannot make mistakes is not to do anything. And so, in my view of the world, none of us are perfect. So, no matter what it is we do, there's the potential of mistakes. I've made a zillion mistakes in my life, but I'm never going to let the possibility of being an error stop you from pushing forward. 31:44 - What I'm trying to say to young people is success is not leaving the place that you came from. Success is leaving the place that you came from, and then coming back to that place and making a significant difference.Connect with Becky Dubin JenkinsLinkedIn Connect with Dr. Howard FullerWebsite Guest Bio:Dr. Howard Fuller is a legendary activist and reformer. This week’s featured guest on Chef’s Story is Paul Bartolotta. In 1980, Paul graduated from the Restaurant and Hotel Management Program at Milwaukee Area Technical College. His cultural education began with New York restaurateur, Tony May, owner at the time of the Rainbow Room and founder of Gruppo Ristoratori Italiani, the international food society devoted to maintaining the traditions and standards of classical Italian colleagues. Initially instituted as a six-month tour of duty for Paul, this stint evolved into a seven-year education of the highest order. Working in some of the country’s most prestigious restaurants, the aspiring Chef studied all phases of managing a first class restaurant. Paul was Executive Chef/Managing Partner of Spiaggia, located in Chicago, from 1991 to 2000. He developed his culinary artistry in some of Europe’s most distinguished restaurants. Winner of the coveted James Beard Best Midwest Chef Award in 1994 and The James Beard Award for Best Chef Southwest in 2009, Bartolotta directed Spiaggia to every major national fine dining award. The honors include a Four Diamond Rating from the American Automobile Association, the Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRoNA) Award and numerous Critics Choice Awards from Chicago Magazine. Spiaggia has been honored with the prestigious Insegna del Ristorante Italiano del Mondo, presented to Chef Bartolotta by the President of Italy, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, in May of 1997. Spiaggia received the unprecedented and coveted four-star rating from bothThe Chicago Tribune and Chicago Magazine. No other Italian Chef has been awarded four stars in any major market in the United States. Paul’s latest venture is Bartolotta’s Ristorante di Mare, located in the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. This world-class restaurant serves fresh seafood flown in daily from Italy. With a stellar wine list and high reviews from national press, Paul has created a piece of Italy in the desert.
