My guest  this week is conductor John Jesensky, who is currently conducting premiere orchestras around the world in fully restored film score performances. Among the shows that he's conducted include Harry Potter: In Concert, Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, Amadeus, as well as The Godfather: Live.   John is also a freelance film composer, scoring short and feature-length films as well as trailer and source music for top production companies. Several of his short scores have made appearances and won awards at film festivals around the world.   During graduate studies at NYU Film School where he studied privately with renowned film orchestrator Sonny Kompanek as well as prolific film composer Ira Newborn, John was awarded the prestigious Elmer Bernstein Award for Film Composition.  During our interview John spoke about the hardest thing a conductor has to learn, the preservation of legendary scores, the differences between the many orchestras he's conducted, tight film scoring budgets, augmenting scores with samples, and so much more. I spoke with John via zoom from his office in Los Angeles.  On the intro I looked at how music streamers are losing millennials, and a new silk fabric sound isolation in development.

Our garage was filled with props from that show,” he joked. “Every episode a different era, location, so it was a place my sister and I would get lost in—make believe.” Ben summarized both of their childhood stories: “There's no way I'm not doing this.” As they started to write together, eventually found themselves in staff for shows like Entourage, Fargo, The Umbrella Academy, and most recently, For All Mankind where they're listed as Creators along with Ronald D. Do you smell that delicious smell? It's a delicious batch of cookies that The Reverend Shawn Amos is cooking up in his new book 'Cookies & Milk'!  Amos is on the show this week to discuss his book, a fictionalized re-telling of his childhood growing up as the son of Wally 'Famous' Amos and opening up the infamous cookie shop back in the 70's.  We get into a discussion about the book, all of his latest music releases, and how folks can start to 'reclaim their legacy'. Enjoy! About The Reverend Shaw Amos Most people know me as blues musician, The Reverend Shawn Amos. I've been lucky to meet and work with a lot of very talented people who all taught me how to live a creative life. I'm the only child of William Morris agent-turned-cookie entrepreneur Wally “Famous” Amos, and singer Shirley “Shirl-ee May” Ellis. I spent my childhood in shadowy nightclubs, on the funky streets of 70s Hollywood, and in my own broken home, watching folks hustle, intently listening to them spin tales. I went to NYU Film School, only to be wooed back west in my senior year to accept a screenwriting gig with A & M Films. Throughout my twenties, I made music that grappled with my race and identity. I tried on personas, searched for my voice, explored different kinds of music which led me to the blues. While I was grounded from touring during the Coronavirus Pandemic, I had a lot of time to think—and write. This was the beginning of Cookies & Milk. It's a book for my son (also named Ellis), my dad, and me. It's also a book for anyone wanting to discover who they are. About Cookies & Milk Eleven-year-old Ellis Johnson has the summertime blues. He dreamed of spending the summer of 1976 hanging out with friends, listening to music, and playing his harmonica. Instead, he'll be sleeping on a lumpy pullout in Dad's sad little post-divorce bungalow and helping bring Dad's latest far-fetched, sure-to-fail idea to life: opening the world's first chocolate chip cookie store. They have six weeks to perfect their recipe, get a ramshackle A-frame on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard into tip-top shape, and bring in customers.   But of course, nothing is as easy as Dad makes it sound, even with Grandma along for the ride. Like she says, they have to GIT—get it together—and make things work. Along the way, Ellis discovers a family mystery he is determined to solve, the power of community, and new faith in himself.   Partially based on Shawn Amos's own experiences growing up the son of Wally “Famous” Amos in a mostly white area, and packed with humor, heart, and fun illustrations, this debut novel sings with the joy of self-discovery, unconditional love, and belonging. Today on this very special episode of the Author Pep Talks podcast I'm actually interviewing two guests instead of just one. My first guest is Crystal Maldonado, the author of the Young Adult romance, Fat Chance Charlie Vega. Crystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. Her work has been published in the Hartford Courant, Buzzfeed, and Latina Magazine. By day, she is a social media manager working in higher ed, and by night, a writer who loves Beyoncé, shopping, spending too much time on her phone, and being extra. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and dog. Next up is Olivia Abtahi, author of the Young Adult novel, Perfectly Parvin. Olivia Abtahi is a film director and writer based in Denver, Colorado. Born to an Iranian father and an Argentine mother, she is a melting pot of distinct cultures. Growing up in the DC area, Olivia always had a passion for cinema and storytelling. She is a graduate of NYU Film School and VCU Brandcenter, and has lived in New York, San Francisco, Richmond Virginia, and Dublin, Ireland. She holds a BFA and MaSC. In her spare time, she enjoys watching music videos, laughing so hard it hurts, and hunting down gluten-free pastries. She currently lives in Denver, Colorado, with her husband and daughter. Today, we're talking about the absolutely monumental feat that is parenting during the pandemic, the intense stress of debuting, also during a pandemic, and making time for your creative practice when you're being pulled in a million different directions. I enjoyed every second of our conversation and loved the back and forth between these two fierce Mamas. I am so in awe of their strength, candidness, and sense of humor, and I hope you come away from this conversation feeling as liberated as I did. So steal some alone time if you can, kick up your feet, and then enjoy my conversation with Crystal Maldonado and Olivia Abtahi. Susan Johnston tells her unbelievable stories including as a child meeting not only Robert Redford while on the set of the first Great Gatsby because her dad was responsible for the antique cars for that movie but also how she meets the great boxer, Joe Frazier and football legend, Joe Namath. Then at the age of the 16 after being on her own, Susan ended up, thanks to the myrony of her not enjoying her guitar class at another college, led her to attend the prestigious NYU Film School in the same class as Spike Lee while Dov Simens was teaching. Besides the incredible stories Susan has about the film industry, she also shares how she has met some of the great spiritual leaders of the world such as the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh and Deepak Chopra just to name a few. Susan also explains how New Media Film Festival came about from a dream she had back in 2008 when she saw the blueprint of New Media Film Festival after she asking one night “How do I take all my experiences to help the community in film and entertainment?” Susan has always been about stories worth sharing so New Media Film Festival accepts all forms of media no matter when it was made and has over 28 categories. So, if you have a piece you would like to submit for 2021 there is still time and make sure to check out her website below!! About the Guest: Susan Johnston was plucked from college to immerse herself into major motion picture filming, hired by the illustrious Sherri Lansing, former president of Paramount Pictures. Susan continued her education privately at NYU, Dov Simens presiding. Susan Johnston is the founder, director and CEO of the award-winning New Media Film Festival, which honors stories worth telling, now in its 12th successful year. The festival is a global catalyst for story & technology that honors stories worth telling from all ages, all cultures and all media. “When it comes to show business, if you want to make a name for yourself, meeting Susan Johnston should be on everyone's must-do list. She's one of the pioneering, innovating wonders of the world. For over 20 years, Susan's gained honors and awards for both bridging the gap between technology and story as well as innovating ideas for the future of media. When Susan Johnston speaks, everyone stops texting- including Academy members, studio heads, chairs, content creators and moguls.” Great Mind Series, Ilene ProctorWebsite/Social Media Links:

Myrony is slightly different because it's synchronicity in motion since it's up to us to pay attention to the coincidences or signs but also “listen” to the intuitive pull we all get which Alysha believe is our greatest superpower! Alysha's life was fairly normal until she got into a car accident that triggered fibromyalgia at the age of 18 and had to deal with that very painful chronic condition along with many other life challenges including loss of both parents, marriage, divorce, severe depression, suicidal thoughts & attempt, alcohol/prescription drug abuse and a full hysterectomy by the time she was 35. Alysha's strong spiritual connection and tenacity is what helped her through those very dark days that lead into years at times. Later she realized the reason she went through those trying times was so she could help others struggling with life's challenges and share the understanding of how to move forward. She now lives in San Jose, CA but still considers herself an East Coast girl at heart after growing up in Northern New Jersey and living in Delaware, Maryland and DC area...

Ben Kutchins, Emmy-nominated cinematographer of Ozark, on creating the look of the show, working with Jason Bateman, the Veronica Mars movie, Mozart in the Jungle

The Cinematography Podcast

Cinematographer Ben Kutchins feels that in filmmaking, you have to be fully committed to believing the story you're telling, and your focus must be unwavering when shooting. There is no other story happening in the world other than the story you're telling. This single-mindedness has served Ben well when shooting the series Ozark for Netflix, which is shot with very controlled light sources and camera movements. Every scene in the show is planned out carefully to reveal more about the story or the character. He and director/producer Jason Bateman wanted it to always look dark and shadowy, and many of the shots in the show are done as “oners,” or one long take. It might take seven to ten takes to get the oner, depending on how intricate it is. Before Ozark, Ben started off exploring still photography as a teen, then landed an internship at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), which led to a production assistant job at ILM. He had the opportunity to use the lab at Lucasfilm to experiment and process film to understand how it could look. But Ben knew his passion was film, so he enrolled at NYU Film School in order to learn more and work with other young filmmakers such as Rachel Morrison and Reed Morano. He shot about 60 short films in two years, then worked on several indie films before getting hired to shoot the Veronica Mars movie and then the Amazon series, Mozart in the Jungle. Shooting Mozart in the Jungle gave Ben the opportunity to work with and learn from very seasoned directors. He thinks working in television has been an amazing opportunity to collaborate with other DPs and that television has helped him develop a style and hone his craft. My guest today is Devin Concannon, who was one of 4 editors on ESPN's mega-hit 10 part documentary series, The Last Dance. The Last Dance revolves around the career of Michael Jordan, with a particular focus on his last season with the Chicago Bulls. The project itself is a beast of an endeavor.. we're talking 10 episodes, over 100 interviews, and according to director Jason Hehir, 10,000 hours of footage to sift through: that includes every game from every main character they had and every news report that had been done on them, both nationally and internationally. The Last Dance averaged 5.65 million viewers across all 10 episodes when they premiered on Sunday nights over the course of five weeks in April and May — making it the most-watched ESPN documentary of all time. How do you go from 10,000 hours of footage to a 10 hour series? I turned to editor Devin Concannon to ask that question and many more. Devin is an editor based out of New York City. An NYU Film School graduate, Devin edited Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story and Fyre Fraud, about the infamous Fyre Festival, before joining The Last Dance Team. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we are beginning to come dangerously close to spending longer talking about Republic Commando than we did playing it. This time, we get a look behind art development for Star Wars through the eyes and voices of two artists who worked on the title: Greg Knight, who was the principal concept artist for the game, and Paul Pierce, who designed the look and feel of the user interface. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:45 Interview segment 1:14:39 Break 1:15:14 Feedback Issues covered: how Paul got his start, web design in the 90s, learning 3D modeling, how Greg got his start, the ubiquity of LucasFilm in Marin, making an important connection and getting an unstoppable recommendation, the importance of art in establishing a game, the design of HUDs and menus, the distinction between UX and UI, how UI art got into the game, iterating the UI in response to the game you're building, starting out as a texture artist, imagining rooms as a whole and getting noticed for your control of tone, an exciting time to learn about concept art, being a force multiplier for the art team, the need for concept art with rising fidelity, keeping cohesive style and flow in the art by use of concept art as well as art direction, differences with film, what immersive experiences mean for content, lacking control of camera, good ideas coming from all over, vs auteurism, putting a burden on UI aesthetics by being always first-person, bringing in the visor pieces, losing visual real estate and that conversation, the impact on design on art decisions, putting the ammo readouts on the guns, marking up renders to figure out where UI elements would go, weapons as characters, running into resistance with the programmers, the ways programmers can... avoid work, the conversation you have to have around iteration cost, fitting into a palette, designing vehicles that didn't exist in canon, coming up with the tone of a more deadly clone story, figuring out who the clones even were, figuring out what the side stories were, imagining beyond the borders of the film, morphing to a different scale, how little a Geonosian means to a Jedi and how much to a trooper, colorgrading and how it sells various tones and moods, giving a different interpretation of Star Wars, seeing something of Republic Commando reflected in Rogue One, focusing on what's important to your characters, the heat and contrast of the Geonosians, pulling on the film's UI elements, avoiding drama on a project, checking egos at the door, how collaborative the game was, the value of technical art, the energy of team members, tech artists as glue and bridges, the value of a demo, Neanderthal Tim, when your level is difficulty, the design ideas behind the hangars and bridge, the knobs you had to turn for storytelling through tone, having to die again and again, failure without excessive punishment, the ability level of the team, where your skills are relative to the game, improving communication between branches of the team, setting a vision without falling to design by committee, being able to deliver a new experience for a Star Wars audience, the challenge of making an AI that keeps pace with the player, "The Squad Is Your Weapon," the debate around the efficacy of the squad, building around the game's goals and how other games might attack that differently, the importance of building consensus, trying to find a way to say "yes" to an idea, "everybody can design," being able to have the squad revive you. GIVE ME LIBERTY is based on his personal experience as a medical transport driver and an immigrant, director Kirill Mikhanovsky, with writer Alice Austen, create a raw feature film about the comedy and  heartbreak of people in the underprivileged communities living in a struggling American city. Medical transport driver Vic (newcomer Chis Galust) is running late, but it’s not his fault. Roads are closed for a protest, and no one else can shuttle his Russian grandfather and his emigre friends to a funeral. The new route uproots his scheduled clients, particularly Tracy (Lauren “Lolo” Spencer in a breakout performance), a vibrant young woman with ALS. As the day goes from hectic to off-the-rails, their collective ride becomes a hilarious, compassionate and intersectional portrait of American dreams and disenchantment. The characters in GIVE ME LIBERTY are drawn from the people of Milwaukee - they're magnificently diverse and their struggle to survive is desperate, contradictory, funny and moving. Director Kirill Mahanovsky joins us for a spirited conversation on working with a cast of mostly non-professional actors, drawing upon his own work history for the story behind the film and the importance of making Give Me Liberty in his adopted hometown of Milwaukee.  For news, screenings and updates go to: givemelibertyproductions.com About the filmmaker: Russian-born Kirill Mikhanovsky grew up in Moscow where his early passion for cinema compelled him to skip school and go to the movie theatre across the street from his home where, often as the only person in the house, he watched countless films. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Mikhanovsky immigrated to Milwaukee, where he had a series of odd jobs, including driving medical transport for people with disabilities, and began making films. After graduating from NYU Film School, Mikhanovsky went on to make films in the US, Brazil, Russia, and South America. A Sundance Alum, his first feature SONHOS DE PEIXE won the Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival.

Phillip Youmans is a filmmaker from the 7th Ward of New Orleans. He is this years Tribeca Film Festival winner for his feature film Burning Cane. Phillip was also rewarded for his cinematography picking up the Best Cinematography award. Remarkably he is only 19 years old meaning he wrote, shot and edited the film while in high school. As of this month Phillip just finished his first semester at NYU Film School making him the youngest director to have an official selection at Tribeca and also the youngest winner. Indiewire proclaimed Burning Cane to be the most exciting black film of 2019 so far. In his childhood, Phillip was first introduced to filmmaking as an actor, taking small roles in productions around New Orleans. This early exposure to working on sets ignited Phillip's desire to pursue the medium from behind the camera. Before high school, Phillip began writing, directing, shooting, and editing his own short films. During his high school years at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Phillip solidified his technical foundation of filmmaking in their media arts program. In his junior year, Phillip began work on his first feature film Burning Cane. Burning Cane, starring Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Jack Ryan, Tréme, Suits, Clemency) and executive produced by Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), speaks on the rigid religious convictions that govern the black community in the rural south and the cyclical nature of destructive behavior. His most recent video installation titled Won't You Celebrate With Me premiered with Solange Knowles' creative agency Saint Heron at the end of his senior year of high school; the instillation is showcase of black female unity in an alternative future. His latest short film Nairobi, also made with Saint Heron, is about a Harlem-based family of francophone West-African immigrants. Nairobi will premiere on their platform in the Spring of 2019. Furthermore, Phillip is in post-production for his documentary about the Grammy-nominated jazz musician Jon Batiste titled The Vanguard: Days with Jon Batiste. Set release in late 2019 in tandem with Batiste's latest album, the film follows Batiste and the Stay Human Band from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to their six night run at the legendary Village Vanguard.

Today the college degree had such an allure that some successful (and presumably smart) people are willing to risk felony charges to help their children access it. Sure, there are prestigious school names that might open additional doors, but the pervasive college religion is mostly built on propaganda. Seth Hymes is a business & entrepreneur coach, a digital marketer, and a filmmaker. Twenty years ago he graduated from the famed NYU Film School and discovered it had adequately prepared him for a volatile career in America's rapidly expanding service industry. Eventually Seth embraced self-directed education and acquired a set of skills that consistently earn him a yearly six-figure salary, providing him tremendous professional satisfaction and security. Through this process, he became a passionate advocate for opting out of college; he produced a very thorough free resource simply called Skip College For Success. In addition to exposing college propaganda, it also provides an introduction to how to actually make money (without a degree) and to how young people can start living life on their own terms. Seth has also organized his professional and life lessons to teach young people how to get jobs in digital marketing without a college degree or any experience. His course has enabled many of his students to skip or drop out of college. You can see their stories on Seth's Instagram @thesethjared. Seth and I connected recently and I quickly realized that his work is well-aligned with our mission at School Sucks Project. This is the first of many conversations, but in this introduction we'll discuss the following topics: 1. Skip College For Success - what motivated Seth to create this free course - why college is failing so many young people - misleading data about college and why it is being spread - most compelling facts about why college isn't worth it - credential inflation - counseling people who are dealing with social or family pressures to go - the "skip college" strategy for people ages 15-23 2. High Income Skills - Seth's Digital Marketing Career Blueprint - why he chose to focus on this high income skill - training for a career instead of a degree - what do Seth's students frequently disclose about their prior college experience? 3. Foundational Mindset - why prioritize self-development over critical thinking? - anyone can be an autodidact? - why knowledge is not always power I'm also happy to announce that Seth's Digital Marketing Career Blueprint is the first addition to a School Sucks Project library of courses on high-income skills. HBO, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, Oscar Nominated Director Whit Stillman, Cannes Directorial Winner Matt Ross, The Duplass Brothers, Chris Messina... these are just a few of Doug's esteemed collaborators. To most Cinematographers over the age of 40 being honest about their feelings, 33 year old Doug Emmett's prolific career would be the source of much envy and jealousy. But to sit down with Doug to talk shop and hear about his journey to his current place in the world of Film & TV, is to love him. Articulate and humble, Doug was uneasy about being interviewed for a podcast called 10,000 "No" s, as he feels like he's lived a charmed life. But, as with anyone in any field, Doug's path to success has been paved with patience, a willingness to fail, a lot of hard work and the ability to overcome the challenges that can sometimes be presented by prickly actors or a sunset that refuses to wait for a particular film or TV show to "get the shot". Doug's journey began early, when at the ripe age of 7, his mother offered to get him and SLR film camera if he took on extra chores to help out his father, who had just suffered a hernia. That led to a mother/son mentorship, where she taught him about lenses and F-stops, and inspired him to go out and shoot videos of neighborhood kids with his brother. A great teacher encouraged him to start a TV show in HS on a local access channel which eventually led him to NYU Film School. But through all of the learning and the success, Doug's mantra has been to serve the story, serve the project and serve the director... which, as of late, sometimes means himself: see his directorial debut of the episode titled The Internet in Season 1 of HBO's Room 104.   10,000 "No" s is available for streaming or download in the podcast section of iTunes (search Matthew Del Negro and then "subscribe" to 10,000 "No" s with Matthew Del Negro), or at: http://tenthousandnos.libsyn.com/website

You can also read the long form essay he has on the owl phenomenon here.Mike, in his own words... "I was born in 1962 in the suburbs of Detroit. Even during my pre-kindergarten years I was a skilled illustrator, and most of what I would draw was goofy and cartoony. Curiously, the stuff I would draw in elementary school looks a lot like my drawing style now.I was deeply influenced by MAD magazine, and that is still evident in my work today. I need to thank Mort Drucker, Sergio Aregones and Jack Davis for shaping my style. I also need to thank R. Crumb, who I discovered a little bit later in life.In 1981 I moved to New York City, where I went to NYU Film School for one year. I was all too aware that I was a lousy student, and I dropped out and began working as a free-lance illustrator and art director for advertising agencies. In the winter of 1986/87 I spent the season as a ski bum in Jackson Hole Wyoming. This experience would make it very difficult to fully embrace my urban career when I returned to New York. I eventually moved out west permanently in 1991, and this move paralleled the advent of the fax machine and Federal Express. These revolutionary tools allowed me to do illustration work anywhere I wanted, and I was still dealing with clients back in The City. All of this became much easier with the internet.Once out west I began doing book illustrations and teaching for an outdoor school. It was around 2005 or so when I felt a sort of oppressive need to look into some odd life events, stories and memories that I had denied had any importance. Little by little I realized that I simply could no longer ignore those memories and their implications. The catalyzing event was a profoundly strange synchronicity involving a bottle of sunblock. From that point on, it felt like the floodgates were opened up.Let me also add that the initial years of my self exploration have not been easy. The act of trying to peer into my own unknown life events has been enormously challenging. I became a shaky recluse, locked in a spiraling tape loop of insecurity and self-doubt. Presently, things have been a little less difficult, but it's by no means easy. The act of digging like this is no simple undertaking, it's been hard work. The truth for me is that I simply have to go down this road, no matter what the consequences. It seems I am being pulled ever forward by some unknown force. This might be my own higher self, or it might be something interacting with me from outside my being, I truly don't know. What I do know is that this new chapter of my life has been profoundly interesting." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Interview: Paul M. Wood – Transmedia Storyteller

Professionally Speaking » Podcast Feed

Transmedia storytelling is a hot topic. It's a form of storytelling where multiple platforms tie together to tell a common story. It has been heralded as "a new storytelling form that is native to networked digital content and communication channels." UCS professor Henry Jenkins coined the term transmedia storytelling, and defines it as representing: "...a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience..." There's many examples of transmedia, with projects around novels, TV shows, videogames, music and movies as well as a few examples in the corporate and executive communications space. The more elaborate of these can involve the expense of year-long "teaser" campaigns for movies, or mass-participation alternate reality games. However, transmedia storytelling can be a low-cost re-purposing existing video and audio digital content for multiple distribution channels. This might put your video used at trade show presentation on a massive screen into a format suitable for a laptop or smart phone. But it's not just changing the aspect ratio and being done. It's thinking of savvy ways to fracture a coherent story into pieces while keeping a core theme alive in different media. It's weaving the storytellers magic in the digital age. I'm just starting to learn about transmedia storytelling, but the impression I've got is that it is evolving rapidly and, if it delivers on even a part of the promise, will be a VERY BIG DEAL. Paul M. Wood: Transmedia Storyteller I recently met with one of the more savvy transmedia storytellers in Silicon Valley. Paul M. Wood is a principal in the boutique communications firm AE35 Media. Paul is a commercial and independent film director who grew up in a creative family. His father was an artist and his mother a musician. He studied at NYU Film School and has knocked around the tech industry. After a decade making niche-busting films for Fortune 500 companies such as Cisco Systems, Paul is now calling upon his diverse background as both visual artist and technologist to bring storytelling into the twenty-first century by producing tales which cross not only genres but platforms and delivery systems as well. AE35 Media believe that the days of executive communications managers creating a message and pushing out to the world as a scripted speech for a corporate big-wig to deliver once with the hope that it was clever or engaging enough to be noticed are over. Things have changed. We’ve gone from being a world where information is pushed out to the masses, to become one where the information is now pulled in by individuals. The tech industry knows this applies to their products, not too many yet realize it might equally apply to their corporate spokespeople. While information itself is shared, the act of acquiring it is now solitary and intimate. Appealing to ONE large mass of people is one thing. It’s an auditorium filled will people listening to your CEO deliver a keynote. It’s an event, managed by the event production team. However, appealing to MILLIONS of individuals and having them own your brand or message as much as you do? Well that’s no longer a mere event. That’s a universe and within it the possibilities are limitless -- this is the promise of transmedia storytelling.
