[School of Movies 2023] The Wachowskis are back! This time in producer capacity with their friend James McTeigue who wend on to direct The Raven, five episodes of Sense8 and (our personal favourite, the critically panned but hugely enjoyable, blood-spattered throwback) Ninja Assassin.  In an alternate history dystopian Britain, a young lady named Evey Hammond is rescued by a shadowy figure in a mask who calls himself V and seeks to fight back against their tyrannical oppressors. This is an adaptation of one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time. Alan Moore originally spun this out over several years in the early 1980s, depicting our country as a near-future, fascist police state that was a cautionary tale to those living under the iron fist of the Thatcher regime. Our guest, Victoria has read this book repeatedly and is able to delineate with truly fascinating insight, the powerful changes made for this 2006 movie.  You will also find out quite a lot about Guy Fawkes and his part in the conspiracy to blow up Parliament in the early17th Century, and why even though he and his companions failed, their bungled plan still has deep, historical significance.

After the completion of the MATRIX trilogy, the Wachowskis took a short break from directing to write and produce V FOR VENDETTA for James McTeigue, but it wouldn't be long before they were back directing again, for their much-anticipated follow-up to their groundbreaking franchise. Their choice for a follow-up was a surprising one. In 2008, the Lana and Lilly Wachowskis released SPEED RACER, a kid-friendly live action adaptation of a 1960s Japanese cartoon. The results were divisive and the film received poor reviews and was a financial failure at the box office. But in the years since its release, SPEED RACER has garnered a significant cult following and is often called the Wachowskis most underrated and misunderstood film. In this episode, we'll track the long journey that the property took to the big screen, how the Wachowskis got involved, and how they created the film's unique visual look.  BUY OUR MERCH: http://cinemashock.threadless.com Coming Up: CLOUD ATLAS (2012) JUPITER ASCENDING (2015) THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS (2021) Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. Remember, remember the 5th of November! Based on Alan Moore and David Lloyd's groundbreaking dystopian comic that was reprinted under the Vertigo banner, this movie has become something of a cult classic and cultural touchstone. How much of that is due to the original comic and how much is a result of this slick adaptation from The Wachowskis and James McTeigue? We certainly don't have the answer. But we do have a lot to discuss about the production design, casting, direction, political significance and how it relates to British comedy. Come and give it a listen to make sure that this 5th of November is surely one that is not to be forgot.

No pun intended, but WOW, this film has appreciated in value so much.  It feel's more relevant now then when it was when it was released.  Even though its 16 years old it's not dated, it feels fresh, it looks good, has great acting......I honestly never thought it was that good, but then maybe it needed the recent political landscape, and the pandemic, to really strike a chord with me.But what did the kids think of this 1984-esq tale of a totalitarian British government?.  Nieve has a great take on this which, both really surprised me and was not what I saw this film as, but that's the great thing about watching movies with kids!.I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as we enjoyed the movie. Thanks for listening.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kwawwpodcast)

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: "V for Vendetta" - the 2006 dystopian political action film directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis, based on the 1988 DC/Vertigo graphic novel/limited comic book series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. Both the film and the comic book series center upon the relationship between the anarchist, masked freedom fighter, V (played by Hugo Weaving) and the character Evey (played by Natalie Portman) who find themselves drawn together as V enacts vengeance as a part of a personal Vendetta to overthrow the neo-faciscist totalitarian regime of an alternate-future United Kingdom, to expose their crimes, to unite the people, and to bring about a new beginning. Mark talks about why he loves "V for Vendetta" so much and why he is time and again compelled by its story, by its protagonist, and by the message of both the film and the comic series that states, as V says: "ideas are bulletproof" and that "there are no coincidences, only the illusion of coincidences"; and also as the character of Evey rightly states: "an idea can change the world". Mark also explains why he will always "Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot..." and why he will always remember the story of "V for Vendetta" and why to him both the film and the comic series need to be watched and enjoyed over and over and, of course, never be forgot. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Chad Hobson's diverse talents as a composer and performer have prompted collaborations with many prestigious figures in the film industry. He arranged and played Asian ethnic instruments, supported by a full orchestra, for James McTeigue and the Wachowskis' Ninja Assassin. He also provided vocals and choral arrangements for the classically scored The Young Victoria, produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Emily Blunt. Some of his recent projects include two-time BAFTA and Grierson award-winning The Paedophille Hunter directed by Dan Reed, the BBC's BAFTA award-winning series Our War, and the powerful drama A Song For Jenny, directed by Brian Percival and starring Emily Watson. He also wrote the original score for the controversial HBO documentary, LEAVING NEVERLAND.Leaving Neverland is a two-part documentary exploring the separate but parallel experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, at age 10, and Wade Robson, at age 7, both of whom were befriended by Michael Jackson. Through gut-wrenching interviews with Safechuck, now 40, and Robson, now 36, as well as members of their family, the film crafts a portrait of sustained abuse, exploring the complicated feelings that led both men to confront their experiences after both had children of their own. Produced and directed by Dan Reed, the documentary recently had its world premiere in the Special Events section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. In this episode, Chad Hobson reveals how he looked to show a "magical quality" of the two victims and their fateful meeting of Michael Jackson and the over-arching metaphor he used to service as a guide for the tone of his score. Hobson discusses the challenge, choices and goals of writing an actual theme to represent the "abuse," but, at last, why he didn't write a theme for Michael Jackson.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:36 - Meeting Michael04:37 - Room at the Hilton07:12 - Magical Moment08:46 - The Invitation11:17 - Magical ValleyOTHER TRACKS00:11 - Trip to HawaiiSOUNDTRACKThe official soundtrack was released digitally on April 1, 2019 by Redrocca Records. The PositivePositioned somewhat as an historical piece, and a futuristic cautionary tale, V for Vendetta shows and dystopian future and asks what measures we could or should go to in order to overthrow and oppressive Totalitarian Government. We're treated to strong performances from Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving and John Hurt. The NegativeAs with most of the movies based on graphic novels, we usually consider the original material to be superior and the same holds true for V for Vendetta. We found that Evey didn't play as well on screen, and her motivations were quite different from the character in the graphic novel.  There were elements in the graphic novel that were missing from the film, and readers will certainly notice those elements missing. The VerdictThis film stands up well on its own as a dystopian future story. It might not be as good as the graphic novel, but if you're not planning to read the original story, you'll find V for Vendetta both entertaining and thought provoking. Get more detail on V for Vendetta at IMDB Listener Feedback Nick JensenI really enjoy this movie. I've never read the graphic novel but I've always been interested in picking it up since I really like Moore's Watchmen. However, I feel that sometimes reading the source material can sometimes make watching a film adaptation a bit harder if you have strong feelings towards the original; I'm interested on your thoughts on this if any of you have read the graphic novel. That being said, I think this movie is really entertaining and makes you think about governments and how they can/shouldn't interact with the people they govern. Hugo Weaving is perfect as V, I'm so glad they got him to play this part. Essential Sci-fi viewing? Probably not, but definitely an entertaining dystopian future movie. Ray RI liked it - top notch performances all around. Haunting moments/plots that stick with you. Corey BlantonI have to say I really enjoyed V for Vendetta. I think I have a soft spot for movies about overcoming a fascist, over-controlling government. Natalie Portman is great, and still hot as ever, even with a shaved head. And Hugo Weaving really delivers, even with an expressionless face in the Guy Fawkes mask. The character that always stood out to me and was the most captivating though was the chancellor. His constant yelling at his government underlings in those meetings on the larger than necessary big screen really gives you a hitler-esque feel to him that you can't help but dislike and hate. But every time he was on that big screen, all I could think about was, 'how much cocaine has this guy been doing?!' His pupils were gigantic! All the time! But still a fantastic portrayal. Very entertaining movie, and definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Ton de WitteGreat movie, I didn't read the graphic novel but saw the movie because the Wachowski's were involved and I like the things they produce/direct/write. The movie is a bit strange because it is a dystopian movie in which a hero tries to change the situation to better the world but also a revenge movie. V kills everyone who was involved with which the things that made him what he is, it seems a bit that making the world better is more of a nice side effect to him. The movie is very well made, essential viewing yes to show that heroes aren't always nice guys to. Now I am off to youtube to see if there is a film about the overture 1812 with real canons as intended. Remember remember V ! Jennifer RobertsonBest. Movie. Ever. Co-host Jeffery Heatherly and I invite you to remember, remember the fifth of November as we discuss James McTeigue and the Wachowski Brothers' V For Vendetta (2006), which kicks off a series of episodes based on the work of beloved comic book author Alan Moore. Our conversation at times borders on political as we explore the film's themes of government and terrorism, but mostly we stick to our usual shenanigans. We also explore the similarities between the film and George Orwell's classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's an episode that surely vindicates the vigilant and the virtuous. England prevails!
