Along with hosts Sarah Bowen Shea and Molly Williams, Tina talks about:  -why negative ions have a positive effect on both body + mind;  -trail running tips;  -taking a wildflower “safari”; -how to add strength moves into a run or hike; and, -“park prescriptions” and “forest bathing.”   This is a hybrid episode: The intro chitchat with the hosts recounting recent outdoor exploits was recorded in July 2024, while the guest interview (which starts around 07:28) first aired in 2017.      When you shop our sponsors, you help AMR. One in four adults is physically inactive according to a global health study published in the Lancet a few years ago. That's an enormous number. It doesn't take much research or imagination to figure out that this leads directly to poorer health outcomes – and just a lower quality of life in general. Our bodies need to move for our physical and mental wellbeing. Dave Stapleton, our guest today, is working to solve this problem. Dave played semi-pro rugby in Ireland and then moved to London to work in finance. Because of his years on the field, he prefers outdoor fitness classes. He was taking part in these various bootcamps and high intensity training sessions around London when he realized two things. The first was that outdoor training was more accessible to the people who needed it most. People who feared the judgment or complexity of a gym seemed to see outdoor classes as an entry point to fitness. The second was that the outdoor fitness market was incredibly fractured and disorganized. So Dave did what great entrepreneurs do. He dove deep into market research, found like-minded collaborators, and began to build. The platform he created, BUA FIT, just celebrated facilitating its one millionth engagement, so we wanted to get Dave on the phone from London and hear more about how their journey has played out since StartUp Health invested in the company last year.     Learn more and connect with the team at BUA FIT. Why is sleep so important? What effect can a lack of sleep have on your mental and physical health? Can caffeine really affect your sleep that much? What can you do when sleep is hard to come by? These are the type of areas around sleep that we delve into with Matt Philips this week. For over ten years, Matt was part of a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, sports therapists, osteopaths, podiatrists and massage therapists. In witnessing the coming & going of many misconceptions within the Running Industry, Matt decided through his website www.runchatlive.com to try and help both runners and therapists evolve from outdated ideas and embrace a more evidence-based approach to running injury prevention & management. Matt has written for numerous websites & running magazines including Runners Connect & Outdoor Fitness. Matt currently offers specialist online consultation for runners & non runners struggling to achieve results. The ‘Sports Therapy Association Podcast‘ is recorded live every Tuesday at 8pm (UK time) via YouTube then upoaded to all podcast podcast apps. Matt is not a sleep specialist but has suffered from insomnia and sleep deprivation for years. Keen to understand more this year he underwent a sleep study. Modern sleep research is now far more equipped at measuring the effect of poor sleep quantity & quality, and the results are pretty shocking as Matt Philips, has found. Join us as we discuss many of the answers to the questions posed above and explore just why sleep matters. Find out more about the studies and researchers discussed via MAtt's month-long podcast series around sleep here: https://www.runchatlive.com/sleep-awareness-month-sports-therapy-association-podcast/

What Your Massage Therapist Isn't Telling You: The Truth About Massage for Runners with Matt Phillips That massage isn’t doing what you think it’s doing. Not if you see massage as a way to flush toxins out of your system, improve your circulation, or work out your muscle knots. Then what good are massages for runners? Prepare to be enlightened by today’s guest, Matt Philips, who is a running injury and performance specialist, as well as an expert in massage for runners.   Matt shares his knowledge with Coach Claire, dispelling a lot of common misconceptions about the benefits of massage for runners, but also talking about the benefits of massage for anyone, and he does so with a fair amount of humor!    You may recognize Matt as a long-time RTTT and Extra Kick expert contributor. He started his career as a strength and conditioning coach with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In 2004, he focused on sports therapy, working with distance runners and endurance athletes.   Matt is currently part of a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, sports therapists, osteopaths, podiatrists and massage therapists, as well as a lecturer in Anatomy & Physiology. He writes for numerous websites and national magazines, including Runners Connect and Outdoor Fitness.   Along with his running podcast and website called Run Chat Live, Matt holds an annual RCL International Running Conference. The first one was held in Brighton, Sussex with ten world class speakers traveling from Australia, Canada, and the United States. This year, the event has gone virtual, and will be held on October 29th and 30th. Listen to the show for the 20% off promo code.   Questions Matt is asked:          6:17 You are a running injury and performance specialist and massage therapist.  We could talk about any number of running topics, but today I'd like to focus on massage for runners.  Let's talk first about some of the myths about massages.  What are they and how did they get started?   11:49 What about the toxins? People talk all the time about, “Oh, I’m flushing the toxins. My muscles are building up all of these toxins from the environment or from my run.” What does massage do for that?   13:18 Let’s talk about something that actually does build up in the muscles when we run hard, and sometimes we’re doing this on purpose, is to build up lactic acid. A lot of people think, “I’m going to go get a massage just to get rid of all that lactic acid.” Do you want to talk about that one?”   15:49 If lactate is a good thing, why does it hurt so bad?   16:05 What about improving circulation?  I’ve heard that massage can help your circulation. Is that true?    18:03 When I have gotten a massage, they always tell me to drink a lot of water afterwards, and I assume that’s to flush out the toxins or whatever. Can you explain that? Why do they tell me to do that?    19:51 Okay, so we know what massage doesn't do, what does it do?     23:20 So, massage is good because it feels good?   24:26 I don’t know how the idea of massage being good because it feels good is going to be received by people who get massages all the time because they swear by it, like, “Oh, I had a knot in my neck and she just worked at it and I feel better,” or “Oh, I always get these cramps in my hamstring and after I get a massage, they’re totally fine.” There’s got to be something else going on here other than just relaxation.   28:12 What is it with muscle knots? Do muscles really physically knot? I would love to know what’s going on. You can sometimes feel like in your back a hard lump, and if you massage it, it can kind of smooth out. So what’s going on under the skin?    29:52 We often see those free massages at the end of a marathon. Should we be waiting in line for those or should we be skipping those?   31:26 Will massage make you less sore?   32:04 What about massage during taper week before your big race or a week after your big race? What do you think?    35:18 If the main reason for a massage is relaxation, we can always choose other techniques such as getting into a hot tub or doing meditation or yoga. Is there something very specific about massage that is different from other relaxation techniques?   37:20 A lot of us are missing out on the power of touch with the COVID. Are there any ways to get a massage safely these days or replicate the massage experience at home?   39:00 On a more personal note, you are organizing an online running conference at the end of October.  Can you share the details about that?   Questions I ask everyone:   42:32 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   44:35 What is the greatest gift running has given you?   45:48 Where can listeners connect with you?   Quotes by Matt:   “If you are with a therapist who is telling you they’re breaking down scar tissue or they’re re-molding your fascia or something or changing the length of your muscles, then you have to question yourself whether they’re staying up to date with the latest evidence, and a lot of therapists aren’t.”   “Thanks to modern pain science and research which is developing, we know that you can’t fight pain with pain.”   “When we look and consider how important stress is in regards to delaying recovery, reducing the power of the immune system, on so many levels massage can help, not just runners, but any sports person, anybody, to function properly.”   “One of the interesting things which we forget is there’s plenty of people who have got pain when you push down on soft, unknotted tissue. There’s not a clear parallel either in clinical practice or in studies showing a correlation between tightness or lumps and pain.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? This summer especially, with so many gyms closed or off limits, a lot of us rely on outdoor exercise for our mountaineering training. So today, I'm going to share some tips to make running in the heat and humidity slightly less agonizing than a colonoscopy without Xanax. I'm not a magician. I can't make you into a super special unicorn from planet awesome who can walk through the flames of hell and not feel it. But I promise these tips will help!P.S. I apologize for how many times I say “running” in this episode when I really mean hiking. In this episode, I talk to Liz Lowe, a freelance journalist and mother of two young children, about her adventures in taking up first wild swimming and then triathlon. Liz is someone I have known for a while, but I became really inspired following her outdoor fitness journey on social media. She has gone from being unable to swim front crawl a couple of years ago, to completing the Wild Wye 7km swim last year, with imminent plans for the Dart 10k. She got started on her swimming adventure by joining Wiltshire Wild Swim and has since taken up triathlon, joining a local triathlon club (Team Proto-Col Multisport) and completing several Sprint tris. She also recently participated solo in the Bath Half Marathon along a canal as lockdown kicked in!Liz talks candidly about the trepidation she experienced getting started, the sense of community she has found in both the wild swimming and triathlon clubs she joined and how she balances her fitness journey with family commitments. You can find out more about Liz and follow her adventures over on Instagram @lizloweuk & Wiltshire Wild Swim @wiltshirewildswimI hope you enjoy the episode!

In San Francisco she does outdoor classes with her clients first thing in the morning. They might be doing pull ups on a tree branch one minute and stretching on a parking meter the next. Each workout is different and each is sure to kick your butt. Tina stressed that exercising outdoors is an almost spiritual experience. She says she has had clients get overcome with emotions as they workout. Picture yourself at the crack of dawn, surrounded by the glow of the rising sun, running through the woods with the skyline of San Francisco in front of you as sweat is pouring off your body. Pretty cool huh? For more information about Tina, her only accredited Outdoor Training classes and her radio show please go the her website www.outdoorfitness.com Dr Fitness chimed in with his weight loss tips.
