This episode is brought to you by Strong Coffee Company and LMNT. Navigating the world of health and fitness can be a daunting task, especially with the barrage of sensationalized social media content clouding our judgment. But here's the game-changer: it's all about going back to basics. Hydration, nutrition, and sleep – the triumvirate of good health. Join me and Adam Bornstein, author of "You Can't Screw This Up," as we discuss the importance of cultivating situational awareness and avoiding self-sabotage. You will hear Adam's unfiltered insights on building sustainable habits instead of chasing the next big thing or quick fixes. We'll also delve into the world of Adam's writings and his journey as an author and consultant to legends like LeBron James and Arnold Schwarzenegger! Get ready to prioritize practicality, sustainability, and balance on your health and fitness journey. Adam and I also discuss how mindset can power us through life's hurdles, how can we turn adversity into fuel for personal growth, and even share heartbreaking yet empowering stories of loss and resilience. Listen in and discover how a strong mindset can shape positive behaviors in health, nutrition, and fitness, helping individuals thrive in any circumstance. Follow Adam @bornfitness Follow Chase @chase_chewning ----- In this episode, you will learn... Why a strong mindset is essential for overcoming adversity and maintaining health, nutrition, and fitness habits. How our behaviors are often shaped by our mindset and self-perception, which are crucial for long-term health and success. Instead of focusing on extreme measures, prioritize practical and sustainable habits for a balanced lifestyle. Sleep, hydration, and nutrition are fundamental to maintaining good health, but often overlooked due to sensationalized social media content. Embracing failure can help us anticipate and navigate self-sabotage, leading to more successful health and fitness plans. The concept of inversion can help us build successful plans by starting from potential failures and working backwards. It's crucial to understand our individual preferences and lifestyles before choosing a health or fitness plan. Adherence to a plan is more important than the plan itself, emphasizing the importance of personalization in health and fitness. Building self-awareness and understanding where you might fail can help you identify plans that are more likely to work. Striving to be "so good they can't ignore you" is a powerful mindset that can lead to personal and professional success. ----- Episode resources: Learn more about Strong New York Watch and subscribe on YouTube Get your LMNT hot electrolyte drink mix at https://www.DrinkLMNT.com/everforward Save 15% on organic lattes and coffee with code CHASE at https://www.StrongCoffeeCompany.com
Are you tired of letting your health and fitness goals go off the rails when you travel? Well, in this episode of The Code, Dr. Andrew Fix shares some game-changing tips to help you stay on track while on the road. Dr. Fix emphasizes the importance of prioritizing protein in meals while traveling, as it helps to reduce hunger and keep cravings in check. He suggests pairing protein with either a carbohydrate or a fat, but not both, to avoid excessive calorie intake. Consuming caffeine can help curb hunger signals and cravings, especially in the morning or during time zone changes. Dr. Fix highlights the importance of incorporating fiber-rich foods into the diet while traveling. He mentions that having fruits, like apples, and protein snacks on hand can help satisfy hunger without resorting to fast food or unhealthy options. Look for ways to prioritize physical activity during travel. He suggests waking up earlier to fit in a workout or finding alternative ways to stay active, such as bodyweight exercises or going for walks or runs. He emphasizes that it's okay to prioritize personal fitness goals and not feel guilty about wanting to exercise while visiting family or on vacation. Dr. Fix advises getting back into a normal routine as soon as possible after returning from travel. This includes resuming regular exercise, maintaining hydration, and sticking to regular sleep and eating patterns. Leveraging this advice will ensure that travel doesn't derail your healthy habits! Quotes: • “Prioritize your protein and have it with a carb or a fat, but not always both.” (7:58 | Andrew Fix) • “Try to keep some amount of activity in your schedule when you're on the road.” (13:19 | Andrew Fix) • “I think sometimes when we are going to visit somebody who, maybe they don't have the same habits or they don't like to do the same activities as us, for whatever reason, I think sometimes we feel bad. Like we feel bad that we want to do something that they may not be doing. I mean, man, they might even want to do it with you if you just invite them or ask them. Maybe they would like to go, but they're unsure what to do. But you've got to remember, I think, that you wanting to go to the gym is not doing anything to them. You're not harming them in any way. You're not putting them down in any way. You're not doing anything negative to them. You're just trying to do something that you want to do that is good for you and good for your health, good for your mental health, your physical health. And that's okay and you shouldn't feel bad about that.” (13:53 | Andrew Fix) • "The quicker you can get back onto your normal schedule, your normal times that you eat, the normal times that you work out, the hours that you sleep, that you wake up, the better off you're going to be." Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote the foreword. “I've known Adam for more than 10 years. In addition to being one of the smartest people in nutrition I've met, he's the perfect person to blaze a better path that provides a more direct, realistic, and effective way to improve your health and mindset and achieve your goals.” Take the attitude of an intern. Adam shares how he impressed Arnold Schwarzenegger. Be kind. Show up. Be consistent. Do great work. Don't be greedy. Be generous. And keep going. That great work led to the introduction to LeBron James. Adam has done a great job of making the most of the luck he's received. Self-perception: how changing your thoughts and releasing mental baggage make adopting new behaviors, such as eating healthy, easier. This is a thorough examination of why most diet plans fail, including research and case studies that demonstrate the inefficacy of restriction. Book Dedication: “Dad, You were given a death sentence and turned it into a life sentence. That's the power of a different mindset. Thanks for showing me the way. I love you.” Adam's dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and he's been very optimistic in the face of it. "Most people fail physically because they are broken mentally." Inversion: Start at the end. Anticipate that you didn't achieve your goal, and ask why? And then ask, how do I prevent that from happening? The three tactical things you can do: Self-perception - Believe you can do it Find things you love and don't remove them Add 1 or 2 new behaviors that are easy to win How to manage your diet: Slow down your eating Create a meal boundary (have open and closed kitchen times) Low fat vs Low carbs - Protein and fiber are needed Have no 0% weeks. Adam Bornstein (@BornFitness) is the founder of Born Fitness, an award-winning writer and editor in the fitness space, and a bestselling author. His latest book is You Can't Screw This Up: Why Eating Takeout, Enjoying Dessert, and Taking the Stress out of Dieting Leads to Weight Loss That Lasts. What We Discuss with Adam Bornstein: Why are more than 70 percent of Americans overweight or obese despite 40 percent of men and 60 percent of women observing multiple diets per year? The common misbeliefs and flawed mindsets around fitness and weight loss perpetuated by a wellness industry that prioritizes its profits over the people it purports to help. How the wellness industry inflates bogus "sciencey" claims in order to fool us into buying routines, diets, and supplements that, at best, do nothing for us. What calorie restriction really does to the brain. How extreme, all-or-none beliefs make us fail our fitness goals, and what we can do to actually move the progress needle forward. And much more... Today I'm talking to one of my oldest and dearest friends in the fitness industry, Adam Bornstein. He's a New York Times Bestselling Author, personal advisor to Arnold Schwarzenegger, journalist, and all around Swiss Army Knife of all things content. His latest book is call You Can't Screw This Up, and it's a new paradigm for dieting and the journey to wellness. I learn something every time I talk to Adam, and this podcast recording was no exception. I hope you enjoy!
There's a disturbing trend that we need to fix. Diet books are supposed to help people, but the more diets we share, the more people seem to become frustrated and gain weight. Today, more than 40 percent of men and 65 percent of women are on multiple diets per year. Despite that, nearly 75 percent of the United States is overweight or obese, and more people are gaining weight around the globe for the last three decades. There are many issues that lead to weight gain, but diet book that push you towards extremes and force you to stress about BS are a big part of the problem. Arnold is here to suggest a different approach, and why a new book by Adam Bornstein called "You Can't Screw This Up" is how we can take a different approach to nutrition, disrupt the diet book industry, and support healthier habits.

Word has it if you mention "seed oils" on social media, you'll get a strong response about how they are the real cause of the obesity epidemic. But what does the science say? On this episode, Arnold works with his editor in chief, Adam Bornstein, to take a deeper look at canola oil, which is frequently cited as a primary driver of weight gain, inflammation, and heart disease. While ultra-processed foods are a problem, the issue with canola oil is not as clear as it seems. And, you'll also hear from this week's member of the week, Cathy S, and her incredible story of overcoming cancer. Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
This was the seventh session of the day from our Artemis London 2022 conference, held on September 6th, 2022. The event was Artemis' first insurance-linked securities (ILS) conference held in the City of London and saw more than 240 attendees enjoy a wide-range of sessions and networking opportunities. Themed largely around the catastrophe bond, attendees heard from expert speakers that have been in the sector for years, as well as newcomers with ideas of how to innovate the cat bond and ILS market going forwards. Attendees came from as far afield as New Zealand, Hawaii, Asia, North and South America, Bermuda, as well as a large European contingent, plus as you'd expect numerous London marketplace leaders in ILS and reinsurance. This seventh video from the event features a panel discussion around the future evolution of the catastrophe bond marketplace and asks what comes next? The panel discussion was moderated by Guillaume Courtet, Portfolio Manager ILS, Schroders. He was joined by: Adam Bornstein, Lead, Innovative Finance & Systems Change, Danish Red Cross; Brian Kirwan, General Manager, Europe, Vesttoo; and Mike Rich, Head ILS, Commodities & Environmental Strategies, K2 Advisors. The discussion focused on where the panellists feel there is potential for the catastrophe bond and also broader insurance-linked securities (ILS) market to expand its scope. The panellists also discussed potential niche use-cases for catastrophe bonds, including real-world examples of the evolution of the cat bond and ILS structure from their own experiences. Listen to the full audio of this evolution of the catastrophe bond focused panel discussion for more insights into the potential for the ILS market to continue expanding its remit.

When thinking about optimizing your protein consumption, how much is too much? We’ve established that protein is a vital dietary fuel for all kinds of reasons. But, at some point, does eating protein have no additional benefit and is eating more simply “overfilling” your tank? The idea that your body has limits on how much protein you can digest is based on the concept of muscle protein synthesis or MPS. Muscle protein synthesis is your body’s natural way of breaking down protein and using it to help repair the muscles in your body. That’s because during exercise your body uses protein, something known as muscle protein breakdown (or MPB). The combination of muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown are important components of how you build muscle, and — more importantly for every exercise goal — how well you recover from exercise. And, some research has suggested that 20 grams of protein is the sweet-spot for maximizing muscle protein synthesis.Which leaves you with a very important question: how much protein can your body digest, and — at some point — is more protein too much and not really adding any benefit? In this episode of That’s Healthy, Right? host Adam Bornstein weighs the comparison of protein to the gas you put in your car, how to maximize your post-workout intake, and the science behind whether or not you should restrict how much protein you eat per serving. To ask a question, read the transcript, or learn more, visit bornfitness.com/thats-healthy-right.Don’t forget to Subscribe to the show, and Rate or Review wherever you tune in!Resources:How much protein can the body use in a single meal for muscle building? Protein is one of the most important macronutrients you can put into your body. But, is a common method of food preparation ruining the quality — and the benefits — of protein? In this episode of That’s Healthy, Right? host Adam Bornstein sets the record straight about what really happens when you heat up protein and it becomes “denatured.” We discuss the nutrient consideration, if it affects muscle building and fat loss, how the amino acids are changed, and if you need to worry about the protein in common foods when they are heated (was Rocky right to drink raw eggs instead of cooking them?).To ask a question, read the transcript, or learn more, visit bornfitness.com/thats-healthy-right.Don’t forget to Subscribe to the show, and Rate or Review wherever you tune in!Resources:Denaturation — Science DailyThe Chemistry of Protein Denaturation — Chemical ReviewsDenaturation (Proteins) — The Encyclopedia of Genetics Denaturation of whey proteins as a function of heat, pH and protein concentration — International Dairy JournalImpact of controlled shearing on solubility and heat stability of pea protein isolate dispersed in solutions with adjusted ionic strength — Food Research InternationalWhat Will a Protein Shake Really Do to Your Body? – That’s Healthy, Right? Ketogenic diets have grown in popularity because of the overwhelming belief that they are a superior way to burn fat — but is that actually true? In this episode of That’s Healthy, Right? host Adam Bornstein breaks down what you can really expect from the ketogenic diet. Does it help you burn more fat? How does it work with exercise? Does it fight disease or improve longevity? And what are the common mistakes that people make?Bornstein reviews what the science says, and provides simple takeaways to help you determine who might benefit most from going on the ketogenic diet.To ask a question, read the transcript, or learn more, visit bornfitness.com/thats-healthy-right.Don’t forget to Subscribe to the show, and Rate or Review wherever you tune in!Resources:Ketogenic Low-Carbohydrate Diets Have No Metabolic Advantage Over Nonketogenic Low-Carbohydrate Diets — American Journal of Clinical NutritionDo Ketogenic Diets Really Suppress Appetite? The myth of protein as a viable weight gaining macronutrient started in the ‘80s, somewhere between The Terminator and Hair Metal. So why does the misinformation about protein and bulk persist when most protein shakes are only around 100 calories? In this episode of That’s Healthy, Right? host Adam Bornstein looks at the scientific differences between proteins, fats, and carbs, what you can realistically expect from taking a protein shake, and your best dietary options for staying lean and gaining muscle. To ask a question, read the transcript, or learn more, visit bornfitness.com/thats-healthy-right.Don’t forget to Subscribe to the show, and Rate or Review wherever you tune in!Resources:Increasing protein or decreasing carbohydrate...which gives you a metabolic advantage — Weightology A high-protein diet for reducing body fat: mechanisms and possible caveats — Nutrition and MetabolismEffect of protein source and resistance training on body composition and sex hormones — Journal of International Society of Sports NutritionEffect of Protein Overfeeding on Energy Expenditure Measured in a Metabolic Chamber — American Journal of Clinical NutritionEffects of protein intake and gender on body composition changes: a randomized clinical weight loss trial — Nutrition MetabolismA controlled trial of protein enrichment of meal replacements for weight reduction with retention of lean body mass — Nutrition Journal Effect of different protein sources on satiation and short-term satiety when consumed as a starter — Nutrition Journal I Want to Look More Muscular. Or — are those even the right questions to ask? With all of the recent focus on intermittent fasting, you might be left wondering whether skipping breakfast is good for weight loss, heart-healthy, or even beneficial for longevity. In this episode of That’s Healthy, Right? host Adam Bornstein looks at the behavioral research to uncover the one question you need to answer that will determine if you should be part of the breakfast club. I call him, “The Ghost In The Machine” because he’s the person responsible for the successful growth of many big companies and brands, while being the mastermind behind the scenes that you never hear about. In this episode we talk about the path to success, failure, knowing your audience, and the two critical principles. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN The governing compass that points you in the direction of how to measure yourself; which is a key to taking the RIGHT action. Why you need principles so that your blood, sweat and tears go into the right area and fulfill you.Adam’s two governing principles (based on his values) that guides who he hires, how he markets, what people he surrounds himself and what experiences he creates. The questions to ask yourself that will help you set the behaviors to achieve the things you want in life. Why knowing your audience is THE first step to building a fulfilling business AND life. How painful life lessons changed what I valued and changed the direction of my life, both personal and career. How your ‘negative” experiences can become tools to build a better future if you choose it.The #1 characteristic needed to be able to change yourself, the people around you, and your business. Why “creating something of value for people” and showing people you care can be the business combo and will lead you to success for life. Why you need to do the tried and true methods, then iterate them and improve, instead of re-inventing the wheel. How listening to your gut can lead to you making the right decisions for you. Adam explains from personal experience how turning down a huge financial opportunity that wasn’t aligning with him turned out to be the best decision (despite not being clear at first). The formula for who you should listen to, advice vs. opinion + believability. The weaknesses should you strengthen and which ones you should outsource to someone else and not waste time on.The principles Adam gives to the “young bucks” about building a business in the fitness industry. The ONE thing that won’t ever go away and what you should focus on, this is an Evergreen principle.A powerful question that Adam asks that will help you protect your business and help you innovate long-term.Why you must put yourself in challenging situations when times are good and great, and specific tactics to work on your resilience. Last year I went to an event my friend, Adam Bornstein puts on called two12. This annual event brings together some of the top entrepreneurs in the US, and gives attendees the opportunity to spend time with them in an intimate small group setting. It's the place to be if you want the latest business, life and relationship building advice. When I was there I got a number of key insights from both the speakers and my fellow attendees that I've been putting to action ever since. Here are my most memorable. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: How I’ve been able to build so many quality relationships in the industry plus simple tips on how you can too Why doing more of less and finding out what your unique abilities are is going to improve your life and exponentially grow your business The reason you sedate and spend a lot of time and energy on things that don’t move your business forward and how to turn it around The simple formula I use to break down any goals so that I can see the daily actions I need to take to succeed The reason behind why even just 5 habit changes in a year can completely change your life — which 5 are you focusing on? When it comes to addition, most think of illicit drugs, alcohol, or even pain medications. It's rare our society would look at a fast food addition as a real addiction. I certainly never considered it. Until I heard David McClain's story. But David and I don't just talk about fast food addition, weight loss and healthy eating. We talk about having the courage to tell your story to help others. We even talk about the behind the scenes of the reality show, chopped. He's got a personal inside scoop on the show. Dave has spent most of his adult life battling a fast food addiction that nearly cost him his life. After a doctor told him he would be lucky to reach his 30th birthday, Dave decided something had to change, so on New Year's Day, 2013, Dave gave up fast food, and a few months later began the workout program that would change his life forever; Insanity. Since that time Dave lost over 150 pounds and has taken on a new life mission of helping others overcome the mental blocks that hold them back.To date, Dave has worked with hundreds of people to conquer their self-doubt and self-sabotage all while working to better himself, and continue his own journey to good health. Dave describes what he does as "forging a life changing journey, and doing everything possible to ensure it's not a selfish one."
