Ezra Klein is one of the sharpest voices in American politics, but this conversation is not about left versus right. It's about virtue, responsibility, and character. Ryan and Ezra talk about why virtue matters in a democracy, what liberalism has lost by failing to speak clearly about responsibility, and why institutions alone can't save a society if the people inside them abandon restraint, honesty, and self-critique. They also get into what Ezra thinks Stoicism gets right, where it falls short, and why Stoicism, or any philosophy, has to be tested in real life.Ezra Klein is a New York Times columnist and the host of The Ezra Klein Show. He is also the co-founder of Vox, where he served as editor-in-chief and later editor-at-large, and previously worked at The Washington Post, The American Prospect, Bloomberg, and MSNBC.

This month on Laura Flanders and Friends, we're revisiting conversations around solidarity, kinship and what it means to be human.  This week we learn from the feminist philosopher Donna Haraway about  thinking beyond binaries, cultivating community and taking risks. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Description: “Thinking requires action and passion,” says feminist philosopher and scholar, Donna Haraway in this unique conversation. In her 1985 essay “A Cyborg Manifesto” and 2003 work, “The Companion Species Manifesto”, Haraway challenged patriarchal, capitalist, binary, species-ist ways of looking at the world. It's no surprise that people are looking to her work again now. Generative thinking, she tells Laura, requires “taking the risk to try a new pattern; to invent something that may very well fall apart in your collective hands but leaves threads to be picked up again.” In this episode, Haraway and Flanders sit down for an expansive conversation about what it means to be human in an age of AI and resisting what she calls authoritarian “mono-thought.” Plus, a commentary from Laura on staying in the present and “staying with the trouble.” “An individual is embedded deeply in worlds with other people, with other organisms, with living and non-living parts of the world. To be a self is to come to a thicker appreciation and accountability for the way we're embedded in the world and act in the world. That's what I mean by being a proper self.” - Donna Haraway Guests:  Donna Haraway, Distinguished Professor Emerita, University of California Santa Cruz, History of Consciousness Department; Author, A Cyborg Manifesto, When Species Meet, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene Watch the episode released on YouTube; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). THE SIDE-PIECE ECONOMY

    Zo Williams: Voice of Reason

Human beings have spent thousands of years attempting to answer the same question through different languages, different religions, different cultures, and different economic systems: “What is worth more than love?” The answer has never been spoken directly because few people want to admit the transaction exists. Yet every society reveals it. Status. Security. Protection. Prestige. Resources. Access. Influence. Proximity to power. Civilizations change. The currencies change. The transaction remains. Which brings us to an uncomfortable possibility. Perhaps the side-piece is not the woman sharing a man. Perhaps the side-piece is love itself. What if emotional exclusivity has quietly become secondary to the benefits attached to the relationship? What if the relationship survives not because intimacy is thriving, but because the exchange remains profitable? This question reaches far beyond gender. It reaches into the architecture of human attachment. Developmental psychology teaches that people often normalize whatever conditions accompanied their earliest experiences of connection. Anthropology demonstrates that mating systems have always been influenced by resource acquisition and social positioning. Neuroscience reveals that intermittent reward schedules can create extraordinarily powerful attachment bonds. Philosophy asks whether desire seeks truth or merely seeks satisfaction. Spiritual traditions question whether attachment to symbols can become a substitute for direct experience. Viewed through that lens, the side-piece economy becomes something far larger than infidelity. It becomes an investigation into the hidden marketplace operating beneath modern intimacy. A marketplace where attention can be exchanged for validation. Sex can be exchanged for security. Access can be exchanged for identity. And self-respect can be exchanged for proximity to a life that appears more valuable than one's own. The most unsettling possibility may not involve the woman sharing the man. The most unsettling possibility is discovering that neither person is actually pursuing love. Both may be pursuing a transaction. One rents admiration. The other rents access. Both call the arrangement a relationship. Tonight we ask a question many people will find difficult to answer honestly: If every external benefit disappeared tomorrow, would the connection remain? Or would the relationship reveal that intimacy was never the product being purchased in the first place?

Christian B. Miller is the A.C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University and the author of several books. His latest title is The Honesty Crisis: Preserving Our Most Treasured Virtue in an Increasingly Dishonest World.  Greg and Christian discuss what Christian calls ‘The Honesty Crisis.' He defines honesty as a virtue involving both stable honest behavior (not lying, cheating, stealing, misleading, promise breaking, fraud, hypocrisy, self-deception, or “BS-ing”) and proper motivation (rooted in altruistic concern or duty, not self-interest). He argues honesty tracks subjective belief, so false statements can be honest and true statements can be dishonest, and discusses bullshitting, authenticity, excessive frankness, white lies and their costs, and the puzzle of self-deception.  Christian cites research suggesting most people default to truth-telling, but claims that multiple “honesty crises” are happening now where technology makes dishonesty easier to commit and harder to detect: AI cheating, deepfakes, internet infidelity, political misinformation, celebrity/influencer dishonesty, and plagiarism.  *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: The two features of an honesty crisis 35:08: An honesty crisis, any of those, is going to have two features. It's more tempting to be dishonest than it was before, and it's easier to get away with dishonesty than it was before. So it's important to highlight that it's not that there was never dishonesty in these areas. That would be silly. That would be a bad claim, dumb claim. You know, education is one of my areas. There's always been student cheating. It's that something has changed such that it's more tempting now to be dishonest than it was before, and it's harder for others to detach that dishonesty. Is honesty one of the broadest virtues there is? 04:30: Honesty protects against lying, but it also protects against stealing, against cheating, against misleading, against promise breaking, fraud, hypocrisy, self-deception, BS-ing. There's a lot of moral territory it covers on the behavioral side. Maybe one of the broadest virtues there is. Subjective truth vs. reality 05:57: Honesty tracks the subjective truth. It tracks how you see the reality, not necessarily how reality really is. I mean, ideally, of course, you want your subjective representation to line up with how reality really is. That's what we all want. But it doesn't always. And honesty tracks how you see the world, how you see reality, not necessarily how reality really is. If God needed nothing and lacked nothing, why create the universe? Together they explore God's freedom, purpose, human value, suffering, and why Scripture points to friendship with God as central to His plan. This conversation offers a thoughtful, biblically grounded answer to one of Christianity's oldest and most profound questions.

What happens when we blindly accept the monuments in our built world, treating them as permanent fixtures of history rather than invitations to critique the traditions they represent? The University of West Georgia's Emerita Professor of Philosophy, Dr. Janet Donohoe, joins host PJ Wehry to discuss the overlooked dynamism of our built environment and how we interact with public memory. Dr. Donohoe explores the complex ties between physical spaces and tradition in her book, Remembering Places: A Phenomenological Study of the Relationship between Memory and Place. They examine how the removal of monuments is not an erasure of history but a rewriting of it, and how understanding our physical world can help us critically engage with the narratives we pass on to future generations. In this conversation they explore: How monuments function as a "palimpsest," where tearing them down doesn't remove the place but instead writes over it, leaving underlying traces of memory and tradition. Husserl's concepts of the "home world" and "alien world," demonstrating how our childhood environments physically write themselves onto our bodies and set our normative baseline for experiencing new places. The striking contrast between the World War II Memorial, which uses its overbearing scale to dictate a narrative of American power, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, an open space that invites profound personal reflection and critique. Why rushing to memorialize tragedies, such as the push to immediately erect 9/11 monuments, often solidifies a narrative of victimization without allowing for the necessary time to process and understand the long-term impact. The dual meaning of the word "monument"—to remember and to be mindful—which calls us to actively critique our traditions rather than blindly perpetuating them. How the meaning of a monument is never truly "set in stone," but rather emerges dynamically in the continuous encounter between the viewer and the physical space. This is a conversation for anyone interested in philosophy, architecture, and history who wants to understand the profound weight behind our built environment and how we process the evolving, physical traditions of our modern age.Make sure to check out Dr. Donohoe's book: Remembering Places: A Phenomenological Study of the Relationship between Memory and Place

No other podcast has this! https://economist.com/TOE This is a breaking podcast. We're premiering a new paradigm for quantizing 4D gravity here first, without strings. Neil Turok — inaugural Higgs Chair at Edinburgh, former director of Perimeter Institute, and 2026 Fellow of the Royal Society — believes quantum gravity may not require strings, extra dimensions, or a multiverse. The key: a 1970s theory called quadratic gravity, long abandoned over two seemingly fatal problems. Turok and Bateman argue both problems dissolve — one by reinterpreting a classical instability as ordinary gravitational expansion, the other by a subtle tweak to the Born rule that allows quantum states of negative norm without ever producing negative probabilities. One quiet assumption, Turok argues, underpins decades of string theory's necessity. Drop it, and the whole case for a multiverse unravels. Neil graciously gave me a sneak peek at his and his PhD student Sam Bateman's new research. Bleeding edge! I hope you enjoy. That's what I mean by being a proper self.” - Donna Haraway Guest:  Donna Haraway, Distinguished Professor Emerita, University of California Santa Cruz, History of Consciousness Department; Author, A Cyborg Manifesto, When Species Meet, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene Watch the episode released on YouTube; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). Mark's book, If I Don't Return: A Father's Wartime Journal, began as a way to pass down guidance to his sons during a deployment he knew he might not come home from. Ryan and Mark discuss the idea of an ethical will, the responsibility parents have to talk openly about failure, and the importance of teaching children what our own scar tissue has taught us. Lieutenant General (Ret.) Mark Hertling served 38 years in the U.S. Army, rising from tank platoon leader to commander of U.S. Army Europe and the Seventh Army. How does our Western/individualistic perspective limit our understanding of the Bible that was written from an Eastern/collectivist perspective? Discover some cultural norms left unsaid in Scripture.   Receive As we read Scripture through the lens of our Western culture, this week's guest, Randy Richards, reminds us that we may miss or misread some key values embedded in the Ancient Near Eastern culture the Bible was written in. Our Western individualist culture values “me” over “we,” but the Eastern collectivist culture that the Bible was set in values kinship, patronage, and brokerage that emphasize the family or group dynamic rather than an individual.  Understanding the ancient Mediterranean culture that serves as the backdrop for the Bible can add rich context that can shed a whole new light on some passages of Scripture. How can discovering the cultural context of the Bible help you better understand and apply Scripture to your life? What could your next step toward learning more about the cultural context of the Old and New Testament look like?  Reflect  What can you learn about the family dynamics between Joseph and his father and brothers by reading Genesis 37 through the lens of valuing kinship, which emphasizes strong family ties and parents mediating between siblings? How does Ephesians 2:8 model the value of patronage, which emphasizes a patron giving a gift to help rescue a loyal friend? How do 1 Timothy 2:5 and 1 John 2:1 model the value of brokerage, which emphasizes having a mediator speak on your behalf? How do you feel reading John 1:12 and 1 Thessalonians 1:4 knowing you are part of God's family?  Based on Matthew 6:3 and Luke 6:35, how are Jesus' disciples supposed to differ from the patronage culture of that time? How significant is it that Jesus calls His disciples, including you, His friends in John 15:15? Based on Romans 1:20–21 and Psalm 50, how are we to respond to God's gifts? In Luke 7:1–10, why did the centurion send Jewish elders and then friends to Jesus instead of going to Jesus on his own?     Respond (Use this prayer to start a conversation with God) “Dear God, thank You that understanding more of the Bible's cultural context can help me get a deeper understanding of You!
