China's Self-Reliant Trade Philosophy and Military Ambitions — John Batchelor, Gordon Chang, Alan Tonelson— Chang explains China's strategic trade philosophy, viewing commerce not as reciprocal exchange but as a temporary necessity until achieving complete self-reliance in all manufactured products. Chang traces this doctrine to classical Chinese strategic thought, emphasizing the goal of China exporting everything while importing nothing. Tonelsoncharacterizes current Chinese leadership implementation of this doctrine as ominous, explicitly oriented toward preparing China for military conflict and establishing complete dominance of global manufacturing capabilities independent of external supply chains. 1906

Why are Aztecs often considered pessimists from a philosophical perspective? In episode 150 of Overthink, Ellie and David chat with philosopher Sebastian Purcell about his book The Outward Path: The Wisdom of the Aztecs. They discuss how the Aztecs urge us to take an “outside-in” approach to the self, how their understanding of happiness differs from much of Western philosophy, and how their view of the mind as inherently chaotic shapes their moral outlook. Why did the Aztecs think happiness was not an important goal? How can the Aztec notion of ‘right speech' help us gain control over the internal chaos of the mind? And why did the Aztecs reject the possibility of redemption? In the Substack bonus segment, your hosts dive deeper into the pessimism of the Aztecs and the claustrophobia of the Spanish conquest.Works Discussed:Sebastian Purcell, The Outward Path: The Wisdom of the AztecsJacques Soustelle, Daily Life of the Aztecs on the Eve of the Spanish ConquestEnjoy our work? Episode Highlights[00:00:48] What Makes Software MaintainableDon explains why unnecessary complexity is the biggest barrier to maintainability, drawing on themes from A Philosophy of Software Design.[00:03:14] The Cost of Clever AbstractionsA real story from a Node.js API shows how an unused abstraction layer around MongoDB made everything harder without delivering value.[00:04:00] Shaping Teams and Developer ToolsDon describes the structure of the Search Craft engineering team and how the product grew out of recurring pain points in client projects.[00:06:36] Reducing Complexity Through SDK and Infra DesignWhy Search Craft intentionally limits configuration to keep setup fast and predictable.[00:08:33] Lessons From ConsultingRobby and Don compare consulting and product work, including how each environment shapes developers differently.[00:15:34] Inherited Software and Abandoned DependenciesDon shares the problems that crop up when community packages fall behind—especially in ecosystems like React Native.[00:18:00] Evaluating Third-Party LibrariesSignals Don looks for before adopting a dependency: adoption, update cadence, issue activity, and whether the library is “done.”[00:19:40] Designing Code That Remains UnderstandableWhy clear project structure and idiomatic naming matter more than cleverness.[00:20:29] RFCs as a Cultural AnchorHow Don's team uses RFCs to align on significant changes and avoid decision churn.[00:23:00] Documentation That Adds ContextDocumentation should explain why, not echo code. Don walks through how his team approaches this.[00:24:11] Type Systems and MaintainabilityHow Don's journey from PHP and JavaScript to TypeScript and Rust changed his approach to structure and communication.[00:27:05] Testing With TypesStable type contracts make tests cleaner and less ambiguous.[00:27:45] Building Trust in AI SystemsDon discusses repeatability, hallucinations, and why tools like MCP matter for grounding LLM behavior.[00:29:28] AI in Developer ToolsSearch Craft's MCP server lets developers talk to the platform conversationally instead of hunting through docs.[00:33:21] Improving Legacy Systems SlowlyThe Strangler pattern as a practical way to replace old systems one endpoint at a time.[00:34:11] Deep Work and Reducing Reactive NoiseDon encourages developers to carve out time for uninterrupted thinking rather than bouncing between notifications.[00:36:09] Measuring ProgressBuild times, test speeds, and coverage provide signals teams can use to track actual improvement.[00:38:24] Changing Opinions Over a CareerWhy Don eventually embraced TypeScript after originally writing it off.[00:39:15] Industry Trends and Repeating CyclesSPAs, server rendering, and the familiar pendulum swing in web architecture.[00:41:26] Experimentation and Team AutonomyHow POCs and side projects surface organically within Don's team.[00:44:42] Growing Skills Through Intentional GoalsSetting learning targets in 1:1s to support long-term developer growth.[00:47:19] Where to Find DonLinkedIn, Blue Sky, and his site: donmckinnon.dev.Resources MentionedA Philosophy of Software Design by John OusterhoutJohn Ousterhout's Maintainable.fm Interview (Episode 131)Search CraftElasticAlgoliaWordPress Plugin DirectoryRequest for Comments (RFC)Strangler Fig PatternC2 WikiModel Context Protocol (MCP)Glam AIAubrey/Maturin Series by Patrick O'BrianMaster and Commanderdonmckinnon.devThanks to Our Sponsor!Turn hours of debugging into just minutes! Game theory is a way of quantitatively describing what happens any time one thing interacts with another thing, when both things have goals and potential rewards. That's a pretty broad class of interesting events, so it is unsurprising that game theory is a useful way of thinking about everything from international relations to the evolution of peacock feathers. I talk with philosopher Kevin Zollman about what game theory is and how it gets used in biology and human interactions. We discuss how thinking in game-theoretic terms can help understand the origin of meaning and intentionality in human language.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/12/01/337-kevin-zollman-on-game-theory-signals-and-meaning/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Kevin Zollman received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Irvine.      Most of what people know about Stoicism is totally wrong. They might recognize names like Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus, or they assume the whole philosophy is about being stoic in the modern sense, cold, emotionless, shut down, resigned. But that picture couldn't be more off.

Jainism, along with Buddhism and Hinduism, is one of India's great dharmic traditions – though far less well known than its siblings. Emerging around the second century BCE, it is best-known for valuing ahimsa in pursuit of liberation – a devout practice of non-violence. Yet there is far more to Jain philosophy than liberation and ahimsa. Jainism offers a rich way of understanding the self, the cosmos, and the divine. It's a philosophy with a vision of reality that continues to challenge Western preconceptions on, well, just about everything: from the nature of souls and knowledge to the meaning of life and the origin of the universe. Today, we'll be exploring Jainism with Dr Marie-Hélène Gorisse. Dr Gorisse is currently Dharmanath Assistant Professor in Jain Studies at the University of Birmingham, where she's co-project lead of the Global Philosophy of Religion Project 2. Marie-Hélène's work explores South Asian philosophy of religion and, most specifically, she is a world-leading expert on Jaina philosophy. In this episode, we'll trace how Jainism arose, how its sages taught that the self can escape the cycle of rebirth, and the purpose of the universe. And perhaps more importantly, we'll explore how Jainism can help us all live better lives for the sake of ourselves, and the world around us. This episode is produced in partnership with The Global Philosophy of Religion Project at University of Birmingham, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo welcome Psychology Professor Dr. Bruno De Oliveira to unpack the real problems with the modern self-help industry. Why does self-help culture thrive despite offering oversimplified advice? How does it ignore the structural forces that shape mental distress? And what does evidence-based psychology actually say about wellbeing? We discuss the rise of pseudo-psychology, the limits of mindset-based advice, and how institutional practices, social inequality, and lived experiences contribute to mental distress. A thoughtful conversation for listeners interested in critical psychology, philosophy, ethics, and the science behind wellbeing. Drawing from critical community psychology, critical realism, and interdisciplinary research, Dr. De Oliveira explores how institutional practices, social inequality, and lived experiences, especially among those facing homelessness or welfare systems, challenge the myth that personal mindset alone determines success. We examine:  limits of positive thinking, pseudo-psychology in the self-help space, the wellness industry vs. scientific psychology, how social economics shape mental distress, and why individualistic advice often fails marginalized communities.
