"This is the best book about how it used to be," writes the influential music critic and record industry analysts Bob Lefsetz, in praise of Paul Rappaport's wild ride of a memoir, Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay and the Art of Rock Promotion. "[It's] the only book I can remember that truly details what it was like inside the star factory." After a career spanning more than three decades in rock promotion at Columbia Records, "Rap" knows as much as anyone what it takes to launch a new act, pump up a new record, or beat the drums on behalf of a world tour. Before capping his career at the label as a senior vice president, he had played a pivotal role in shaping and re-shaping the careers of some of the biggest stars in the business, including artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, and the Boomtown Rats. "I'm a storyteller," he explains, of the many ways he tried to frame the stories of the musicians on his roster. "We were making it up as we went along, and the characters were everywhere—not just the artists, but the behind-the-scenes people, the managers. No one had captured anything… I started thinking if I don't write this down now, I don't know how long I'll have these memories. But I have them now, so that's why a book, and why now." Upon leaving Columbia, Rap formed his own production company, Tres Hombres, and for many years wrote the "Backstage Access" block for Classics du Jour. He was the lead guitarist in the pioneering Los Angeles punk band Mogan David & His Winos. Join us for a frenzied and free-wheeling look back at the glory days of rock 'n roll, as Rap reflects on the writing of his first book, and a culture-stamping career that gifted him the chance to eat latkes with Lou Reed, receive a backstage guitar lesson from Keith Richards, talk Bob Dylan down from writer's block, and trade licks onstage with David Gilmour in a once-in-a-lifetime turn as a featured guest of Pink Floyd. Rock Talk Studio: Reviewing Rock 'n' Roll Books and Documentaries
When people talk about Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, there's one creative force almost always left out of the conversation, and without her, Pink Floyd's Division Bell album doesn't sound the same. Her name is Polly Samson. And this new book, Luck and Strange: Studio / Live, documents the album, rehearsals, and tour, told entirely through Polly Samson's photographs.*Want the latest in Rock N Roll Book and Documentaries news sent to your inbox? The Boston Garden was a great place to see a concert. Built at the cost of 4 million dollars in 1928 by the same people who built New York’s Madison Square Garden, it was originally called Boston’s Madison Square Garden. Eventually “Madison Square” was dropped from the name. It was a place of legends and legendary concerts. Pink Floyd live at The Garden, 18. June, 1975. Most enjoyable are the performances of You Have Got To Be Crazy, which is different from both the 74 and 77 Dogs versions. The set also has great version of Any Colour You Like and one of the last pre-87 performances of Echoes. Here’s the playlist
Listing Joe Boyd’s most significant accomplishments as a producer, label owner, and music historian is a tall order. A short list of artists he’s worked with includes Nick Drake (heard here), Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, The Incredible String Band, R.E.M., Vashti Bunyan, Billy Bragg, and 10,000 Maniacs. Additionally, he was the founder of Hannibal Records, the label responsible for bringing the term “world music” into the lexicon, as well as serving as a music producer for Warner Bros., where he collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on the soundtrack of A Clockwork Orange and 1972’s Deliverance. His most recent work is as the author of White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s, as well as And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, which came out in 2024. On this episode, hear how songs by Fats Domino, Fairport Convention, and Carlos Gardel shaped his sensibilities. Boyd will be a part of this year’s Big Ears Festival taking place in Knoxville, TN in March of 2026.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After an induction at 41+3 weeks turned emergency cesarean with her first and a second cesarean at 42 weeks due to failure to progress, Irene had an unmedicated VBA2C with full placenta previa pregnancy that resolved at 30 weeks!Irene started her VBA2C pregnancy journey at a new practice that was not VBAC supportive and told her to schedule a cesarean at her first 8-week appointment. She switched providers at 20 weeks and owes her successful unmedicated VBA2C to the many different people and routines she incorporated into her pregnancy. Irene shares allll of her prep details with us including prayer, meditation, zoning out to Pink Floyd, and how she created a special labor visualization ritual so that when it was time for the real thing, she was excited, ready, and so at peace. She says, “If providers aren't informing you about all the resources out there that you can utilize to prepare for your VBA2C, they're likely not going to be very supportive during your birth.”Keywords: VBAC, placenta previa, birth stories, maternal health, pregnancy, women's empowerment, childbirth education, supportive care, doula, prenatal preparation The VBAC Link Blog: VBA2C: The Facts and StatisticsThe VBAC Link Blog: 6 Ways to Physically Prep for VBACThe Ultimate VBAC Prep Course for ParentsOnline VBAC Doula TrainingSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vbac-link/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

In this episode of Music Biz Chat, I look at how Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here returned to Number One — 50 years after its original release — and what the sales breakdown reveals about vinyl, CD, Blu-ray, and physical music today.I also discuss recent industry comments from Proper Music's Drew Hill and question the idea of a “CD vs vinyl” battle, and explains why most music fans happily buy both formats.Plus: a run-through of major upcoming box sets and reissues, and a look at what's been spinning at Now Spinning HQ.Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine
There's something about Mary Houlihan (comedian/painter) and musician Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never, Marty Supreme original score). And that something is that they were both wonderful guests! We laughed, we watched some weird stuff from Mar-a-Lago, we had some synth talk, some Pink Floyd, Billy Joel & Elton John talk, and we heard a poem from Jimmy Stewart.Support Office Hours, watch or listen to another hour of today's episode with Doug's new sounds for electric cars, Vic's "Bad Endings" compilation and tons more every week with OFFICE HOURS+ - get a FREE seven-day trial at patreon.com/officehourslive.Shop our new merch items now at officehours.merchtable.comWatch the latest season of On Cinema at the Cinema and get tickets to The Certified Five Bags of Popcorn tour before it sells out at heinetwork.tvFollow Office Hours Live at instagram.com/officialofficehours tiktok.com/@officehourslive & youtube.com/officehourslive Find everything else officialofficehours.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Yet another playoff collapse in Green Bay. Nothing new, I think I've become, in the words of Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb. Packers blow a 21-3 halftime lead in Chicago. Per reports this morning, it sounds like LaFleur is still going to get a contract extension. We break it all down and the NFL weekend in general. Bucks notch one of their wins of year on Friday in LA, then stub their toe in Denver against a Nuggets team down 4 starters. Badgers upset #2 Michigan on the road on Saturday. Styx had achieved great highs in the 1970s. Albums like The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Cornerstone had all gone multi-platinum in the US thanks to hard riffs from James JY Young and Tommy Shaw and the heartfelt lyrics and vocals of Dennis DeYoung. But by 1980, tensions in the band lead to the dismissal of DeYoung for his insistence on his songs and concepts be at the forefront of the bands creative output. Chuck (bass) and John (drums) Panozzo had known Dennis since childhood and had played together for 20 years but they tried to carry on without him. However, in the end they decided to invite him back and give way to his concept of viewing the US like an old theater. You had an auspicious start with lots of promise, you had a brilliant heyday, you've seen some tough times and now it's time to find out who you are. While Shaw's Too Much Time on My Hands relates to the plight of the struggling working man, the hopeful The Best of Times offers respite from the weariness with a lover. Big riffs on Rockin' the Paradise keep the hard rockers listening and Half-Penny, Two-Penny lets James Young showcase his meatier solos. However, the second side of the album is a bit disjointed with the offputting Lonely People opening up and then a sappy She Cares. AD 1958 is a reprise to AD 1928 and the windout song State Street Sadie borrowing a bit of ragtime makes for big leaps between genres which require more than one listen. And controversy ensued when the Arkansas State Senate found satanic backward masking and issued labels on albums that did the same (including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and more). That would spark DeYoung's next concept album Kilroy Was Here which ended up breaking the band. We like Styx and this is the first album of theirs we've reviewed and it's possible we'd do another down the road. While the band will never be our favorite, we recognize the talent - we may just not always be on board with the concept. Robyn Hitchcock turned 14 in 1967, the year that blew his musical mind open. This English boarding school student and future singer-songwriter-musician already looked to Bob Dylan for the meaning of life when along came the psychedelic train powered by the Beatles, the Syd Barrett-led Pink Floyd, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Kinks, the Incredible String Band and much more. Hitchcock reflects on his awakening with a vivid memoir, 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left, and a mostly acoustic, mostly covers album, 1967: Vacations in the Past. Here we bat around perhaps the most creatively explosive year in the rock era, and he applies his whirligig mind to such questions as whether the music of 1967 would have had such an outsized impact on his own music if not for where, how and at what age he experienced it. He also discusses the newly remixed, remastered version of his 1988 album Globe of Frogs.

This week, before we wrap up the last song from The Last DJ, I'm sharing a conversation that I had with an English gent that I met through my Queen podcast and someone I've gotten to know a little over the last two or three years named Steve Ursell. Steve has kinda been discovering Tom's catalogue in real time through this podcast, so I thought it would be really interesting to talk to someone who wasn't a Pettyhead three years ago but has come to love the Heartbreakers in a fairly short space of time. So, we get into that journey into Petty and how the podcast has played a part in that discovery. We chat about Pink Floyd, Rush, and Queen, and we ruminate on the decline of tastemakers in the world of rock and roll, and on whether we're ever going to see a grunge or Britpop–style movement again in the years to come: especially with the decline of free-form radio and the rise of the all-powerful algorithm. Listen. I know I released this already ,but for some reason it didn't come out on Apple Podcasts so I am releasing it again to see if that works. This is the episode from when we still enjoyed the podcast so much that we were adding episodes and for this one we covered Rolling Stone's list of the greatest rock Christmas songs of all time. It has the first 12 days of Christmas songs on it and is not a bad episode but we were all up to our elbows with family stuff and Pink Floyd does not exactly scream HOLIDAY CHEER so have a go with this one. If you already heard this on spotify or youtube (freak), just download it again and make us feel good.

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 597 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - It's the Most Wonderful Gear of the Year! The guys are back for this Holiday Special episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast and Brian and Blake come in strong with some singing. I think that's what it is. It has been quite the year for gear, and so the guys take a festive goosey gander at Reverb's top pedals of 2025. The guys attempt to coax some form of festivity from Brian with mixed results and then lament the current cost of living. Brian cooks up a plan to speed up the Christmas Holiday and a new business idea is hatched. Slowly, but surely, the guys get back on track and there is much rejoicing! Richard has been running some tone based Ai experiments with a new website he has helped a little with, debatably.ai. Blake remains unconvinced. Brian ponders a new type of Christmas decoration and has a Skateboard rant. Definitely avoid listening to the credits if you value your sanity. Finally, we would like to extend a very festive thank you to all our listeners this Christmastime - we really appreciate you all and we hope you have a fantastic and relaxing holiday. Lego talk, Cheap ham, Britney Spears x Pink Floyd, Brian imitates a Rockman, Dr. Horowitz's Marketing Gamble...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Courses and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
It feels like there shouldn't be anything left to say about The Dark Side of the Moon. It's one of the best-selling albums of all time, and it's consistently rated as one of the greatest albums of all time by critics. If you tune into a classic rock station for more than a couple of hours, chances are better than 50/50 that you'll hear a track or three from it get played. It's so common to hear tracks from here out of context that it's become easy to forget that these tracks, when heard in order from start to finish, constitute one of the most stunningly coherent artistic statements of the album era, and that makes it an album that Discord & Rhyme had to cover in depth at some point. Join Amanda, Mike, Rich, and John as they discuss the 1973 classic that transformed Pink Floyd from a niche-famous British prog-adjacent band into one of the most famous bands in the world. Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabio, John McFerrin, Amanda RodgersComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/169-pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-1973Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod
Hey everyone. We are getting double teamed by the Beatles this week and it might make us cream our eyes out. We combined these two albums so we don't go insane. I wish I would have done the history of the album before each one but we still get to hear about Flavor Savers, the Best Christmas Movies, and having sharp bones. We talk about the benefits of breaking up, we talk to Beck Claus, and reflect back on our busy 2025. Next week we are talking Pink Floyd, "Wish you were here" and we question our sanity for the 264th time. 802 277 BECK
The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
A viral “Top 26 Songs of 2025” list is only the start—we put every pick under the microscope to see what truly earns replay value. From Bailey Zimmerman and Luke Combs to Morgan Wallen's double presence and Laney Wilson's anchor tracks, we dig into the hooks, arrangements, and performances that separate a fleeting hit from a keeper. Expect honest takes, a few friendly disagreements, and a closer look at the production moves—floor tom hits, 70s textures, harmony blends—that make a chorus land. The conversation widens as we ask what makes album art timeless. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon becomes a benchmark for clarity and concept, while modern country sleeves split between glossy trends and striking, cinematic restraint. We swap community favorites—Genesis, Journey, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, King Crimson—and talk recognizability, narrative, and how a cover can hint at sound before the first note plays. You'll hear why certain designs elevate the music's myth, and where visual nostalgia actually works.News brings heart and history: Willie Nelson and Lukas Nelson competing for Best Traditional Country Album is a rare, moving moment of legacy in real time. Riley Green's back-to-back solo-written No. 1s reset the conversation on authorship, Ella Langley's UK airplay run shows country's global reach, and Laney Wilson stepping into ESPN's Monday Night Football booth underlines how presence travels across mediums.Episode LinksScotty Simpson: https://jayfranze.com/episode3/Andy Hull: https://jayfranze.com/episode7/Jim Cristaldi: https://jayfranze.com/episode27/Bob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Dave Jackson: https://jayfranze.com/episode53/William Lee Golden: https://jayfranze.com/episode72/Billie Jo Jones: https://jayfranze.com/episode98/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

This week it's the Captain's Birthday! How does Robert want to celebrate his annual trip around the sun??? With a heavy dose of rocket-powered SPACE GRUNGE!!! Back in Ep. 283's Space Rock episode, we heard the term “Space Grunge” to describe a band called Astronomie. Robert loved it and said that's what he wants for his Birthday. Kevin scoured the galaxy to find other examples of this sonic assault, somewhere between space rock, stoner metal, grunge, and alternative metal! Come blast off and have a blast with us!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things psychedelically spacey and grungy. Welcome to another special edition of our Buzz's Book Club week where Buzz shares top recommendations of new books on music, just in time for your holiday shopping. Join Buzz Knight on “Takin’ A Walk” for an extraordinary conversation with legendary music producer and author Joe Boyd, whose new book “And the Roots and Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music” chronicles decades of discovering and championing world music. From producing Pink Floyd’s first singles and Nick Drake’s timeless albums to founding Hannibal Records and bringing global artists to international audiences, Boyd’s career reads like a roadmap of modern music history. In this episode, Boyd takes us on a sonic journey across continents, sharing stories from his groundbreaking work with artists like Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, and the Incredible String Band. The conversation explores how traditional music from Mali, Brazil, Bulgaria, and beyond has influenced contemporary sounds, and why these ancient roots and rhythms continue to resonate in today’s music landscape. Boyd discusses the cultural and political forces shaping world music, the challenges of preserving traditional sounds in a globalized world, and his experiences documenting music from remote villages to major concert halls. From his early days at the UFO Club in 1960s London to recent field recordings in Africa and South America, Boyd offers insights into what makes music transcend borders and generations. Listeners will discover behind-the-scenes stories from Boyd’s legendary production work, his philosophy on authentic music preservation versus commercial adaptation, and why he believes the roots and rhythm of traditional music hold keys to understanding our shared humanity. Whether you’re a world music enthusiast, a student of music history, or simply curious about sounds beyond the mainstream, this episode offers a masterclass in listening deeply and thinking globally.Support the show: https://takinawalk.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What if your entire journey as a musician started with a Lindsay Lohan movie? On this episode of Bringin' It Backwards, Adam Lisicky sits down with Chris Kelly of Hillhaven, who opens up about growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs, finding inspiration in the unlikeliest places (think Freaky Friday), and the rocky path from bedroom guitarist to fronting his own band. Chris Kelly shares how music was always swirling around his family—even if it wasn't always encouraged as a career—and how a chance at the original School of Rock set him on a path that took him from playing Pink Floyd covers as a kid to headlining real venues in Philly before the age of 14. You'll hear how he built his skills through countless bands that fizzled, what it takes to assemble a dream team of seasoned musicians when you're starting a new project in your thirties, and his honest, sometimes vulnerable take on stepping into the spotlight as a lead vocalist for the first time. If you're curious about the behind-the-scenes of launching a new band, navigating creative insecurities, and the lessons Chris Kelly learned the hard way, you'll want to stick around for this episode. Don't forget to subscribe to Bringin' It Backwards for more unfiltered stories from the artists shaping tomorrow's music.
