Send us a textReady for an honest look at the smartest path from high school baseball to D1 and beyond? We sit down with Coach Austin Nelson of Cochise College to unpack why junior college baseball often beats jumping straight into a crowded Division I roster. With the transfer portal stacking lineups with 22 to 24-year-olds, an 18-year-old freshman can get buried. JUCO flips that script: you face peers your age, see the field early, and stack real-game reps that drive development and recruiting momentum. We dive into the biggest myths about JUCO and break down why Arizona's conference is among the most competitive in the country. Coach Nelson shares concrete success stories, from players moving to Kansas, Mizzou, New Mexico State, Dallas Baptist, and Arizona to arms getting drafted or signing pro deals. The conversation drills into what actually moves a player up: mental makeup, short memory after failure, and a structured environment that rewards consistent work. You'll also get a clear look at costs, housing, meal plans, and why JUCO can deliver a full year for a fraction of many four-year programs. For pitchers, the details matter: daily throwing, targeted arm care, prehab and rehab, and conditioning that builds durable velocity gains without overuse. Parents will appreciate the practical guidance on what to ask before committing—playing time reality, communication with coaches, development plans, and financial fit. We even get into hot-seat takes on the transfer portal, a candid play-bench-trade segment, postseason picks, and a memorable story from the JUCO World Series. If you want playing time now, measurable development, and a proven route to the next level, this conversation shows how JUCO can be the most direct path forward. Enjoy the insights, share it with a teammate or parent who needs it, and follow the show—then leave a quick review to help more baseball families find us.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com

Life can throw surprises our way, from illness to burnout, and Neil shares why it's so important to be ready with a solid Plan B. In this episode, you'll hear how to choose someone you trust to step in if needed, build a financial cushion, and create passive income streams. Neil also talks about the value of having a recovery plan to help you get back on your feet smoothly after a setback. It's a practical, encouraging episode full of ideas to help solopreneurs stay resilient and keep their businesses strong - no matter what life brings. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every solopreneur should have a practical emergency protocol in place for when they can't work due to illness, injury, or burnout. This plan should outline who will manage the business in their absence and how to maintain income. It's crucial to establish a financial safety net, such as an emergency fund or reserve account, to cover expenses during downtime. This buffer can alleviate stress and provide security when unexpected situations arise. When returning to work after a setback, it's important to ease back in with a manageable workload. Setting up a lightweight version of services and incorporating rest periods into the schedule can help facilitate a smoother transition. Keeping clients informed about any time off for recovery is vital. A simple message about the absence and expected return date can help maintain trust and clarity without over-explaining. Solopreneurs should proactively create systems and procedures that allow the business to continue operating even when they are unavailable. This includes documenting processes and automating tasks to ensure business continuity. BEST MOMENTS "When you're the business, your health, your time and your energy are the product. And if you can't deliver, the business has got no product to sell." "Having a plan B doesn't mean you're pessimistic, it means you're a realist, means you're a professional." "If you ain't working, you ain't earning. So you're going to need a financial buffer." "Don't build a business that collapses the second you need to step back because that's not a business. It's a hamster wheel." "Start building your resilience now while things are going OK. It's a smart move." This week, Nicolai Tangen sits down with one of the most influential people in global entertainment and sports, Ariel Emanuel, CEO of TKO. From building the talent agency Endeavor into a giant representing Hollywood's biggest names, to bold moves like acquiring UFC, WWE, and expanding into live events and art fairs, Emanuel has redefined what it means to be an agent and an owner. His legendary career even inspired the character Ari Gold in the popular HBO show Entourage. In this conversation, Ariel reflects on his relentless early days in the mailroom, how he negotiates billion-dollar deals, why he believes pressure is a privilege, and what it takes to thrive in industries that never stop changing. They cover everything from Hollywood myths and combat sports to leadership, politics, art collecting, and the discipline behind ice baths and early morning workouts. In Good Company is hosted by Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management. New full episodes every Wednesday, and don't miss our Highlight episodes every Friday. This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios' first films, James Gray's “The Lost City of Z”. That's pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. We get drinking with a few mini-reviews at the top, and Jeff must have started early because he recorded with his microphone facing the wrong way. Emily is back from medical leave (hooray!) and she and Brad dig into an essential topic for every operation: emergency planning. You can't predict every detail, but you can make the first decisions easier when seconds count. What we cover:What an emergency plan is (and isn't): a concise, written set of steps and key info you can default to under pressure.Start with a farm map: access routes, gates/fences, livestock locations, hazardous/flammable materials, and utility shutoffs.Make the red sheet easy to find: an emergency contact list (911 first), then vet, sheriff/emergency management, insurance, milk hauler, feed/suppliers, and owner/manager.Stock the right supplies: standard first-aid kits, a trauma kit with a tourniquet, and consider an AED; plan to keep kits replenished.Three scenario buckets to plan for:Shelter in place (blizzards, extended outages): backup power/fuel, blocked access routes, pared-down chore list, role assignments, keeping people safe.Evacuation (fire, flood, tornado damage): best escape routes for people/animals, which gates to open and in what order, a designated meeting point (and Plan B), and who calls whom.Medical emergencies (injury or health event): known conditions (EpiPens, diabetes, heart issues), where supplies/AED live, basic first-aid/CPR training, clear directions for EMS, and—on larger sites—who meets the ambulance at the road and whether a safe helicopter landing area exists.Mind the paperwork: review insurance coverage before you need it.Keep it simple and living: a few clear steps beat a thick binder no one reads.Resources mentioned:University of Minnesota Extension: Operations contingency plan templates for livestock operations.Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN): disaster-specific farm resources.Cultivating Change Foundation (Emily & Joe Rand received the Cultivator of Change award).Save the date: Ag for All Conference for LGBTQ+ farmers, ag professionals, and allies — March 7, 2026, Waite Park/St. Cloud, MN.Have questions, comments, or scathing rebuttals?
