We welcome back family counselor Erin Cox to talk about how we talk about the immigration raids and ICE detentions taking place in the United States, the children who are being detained, and the fear all children are absorbing from the news, social media, and their communities. We discuss what's happening on the ground in places like Minnesota, Texas, and Portland; why it's making so many of us feel frightened and disoriented; and what we can do as parents whose children are directly impacted—and for those kids who are learning about it online. We discuss how children communicate distress through behavior and play and why empathy and emotional vocabulary are essential tools we can teach our children. Erin explains the importance of co-regulation—how children borrow calm from the adults in their lives—and shares ways parents can care for their own nervous systems so they can show up as a steady presence. While fear may be the point of these tactics, connection, community, and resilience are how we can respond. Like many ideas, it started over a round of drinks. Musicians, Shorty Delgado, James Jones and Joshua Josué were discussing where they stood in the world of music, each of their sounds not classically Country music, Americana and having spanish thrown into the mix, doesn’t make them Tejano either. Thus, Electric Chololand Records was born. An indie-start up record label celebrating Chicano musicians, stories and heritage, with a specialty in Chicano Rock. Delgado is the head of the label, which launched in 2024. Josué is one of the artists under the label whose new album, “Broadcast to the Surf Ballroom,” is a tribute album made up of demos and unfinished songs from artists Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, two musical inspirations for Josué. Delgado joins us to share more on the record label and its creation. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.com“I had started out determined to learn about Amanda, but as more people contacted me wanting to talk, it was Jason they wished to talk about.” - from To the Bridge, A True Story of Motherhood and Murder*This 7th installment of “The Sociopaths Among Us” is about the person who put me I mind to do the series in the first place. His name is Jason Smith, and he is the father of the two children his estranged wife, Amanda Stott-Smith, dropped from Portland's Sellwood Bridge shortly after 1am on May 23, 2009. Amanda was arrested later that same day, a story I partially tell you in the audio (and fully in the book).Walking into a story like this, one knows nothing other than one's own and others' preconceived notions. In the case of a mother who kills a child, these notions run from evil to crazy and not much more. Neither answered for me why Amanda did what she did.It can also be the case, in stories like this, that the real story, or stories, reveal themselves slowly. You can charge directly at it all you like and you are not going to get it. But if you wait, and you listen…In the audio you will hear how people started coming to me with stories about Jason Smith, he was not the man he presented himself to be, they said; that he was very, very good at what he did, and what he did was practice deception.“He could sell ice to an Eskimo, he could sell you the dream,” I was told by the man who'd thought of Jason as his best friend, a thought the man had, by the time he called me, been thoroughly disabused of. I have written before of the sociopath's terrific and terrible talent of being able make you feel as though you ‘get' him as others do not. They spin webs of so, so, so many, lies that eventually catch up with them. They do not register the damage they leave in their wake, or not as something they should care about, and by the time people realize what has happened, the sociopath is onto the next person or situation from which he can gain sustenance. From To the Bridge:“We become grist for the sociopath's mill, in other words; we become his fuel. Dr. Hervey Cleckley, in his seminal work on the psychopathic personality, The Mask of Sanity, posited that what sociopaths lack is ‘soul quality.' Another work I came across called sociopaths “soul eaters of Psychophagic.' Reading this, I pictured Goya's painting Saturn Devouring His Son and considered the idea that sociopaths must feed on others because they lack souls of their own.”Consider what this consumption can do to others.I can understand someone wondering right about now why I do not have more sympathy for Jason Smith, who after all lost his four-year son. Read on… * To the Bridge is a"Kindle Exclusive Deal" this month. If you grab it, let me know what you think.

The Portland-based Innovation Law Lab was in federal court Wednesday, challenging the ICE policy of arresting immigrants and U.S. citizens without warrants and without due process. If successful, Oregon would join Washington, D.C. and Colorado in preventing this tactic.    From warrantless arrests to unlawful use of force to arresting of journalists and other violations of civil rights, Portland constitutional law scholar Steve Kanter says these federal unconstitutional actions threaten democracy itself. Kanter joins us to put these actions in the context of the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments. Jordan Cunnings, legal director of the Innovation Law Lab, also joins us to share details about the federal court hearing on warrantless arrests in Oregon.

The Oregon Zoo might seem like an unlikely setting for true crime and paranormal history, but beneath its family friendly surface lies a past with some unsettling chapters. In 2013, construction crews working on a new elephant habitat unearthed human remains. These undocumented burials trace back to Hillside Farm — a poor farm and sanatorium for the mentally ill and those with infectious diseases. The identities of those found remain unknown, their presence lingering as a quiet reminder of Portland's forgotten dead. The episode also explores two modern tragedies that unfolded at the zoo. In 1970, a late night break-in led to the death of 19-year-old Roger Adams after he fell into a lion enclosure, followed by the controversial shooting of the lions involved. Decades later, in 2019, concertgoer Carl Stanley Ross Sr. was found dead in an uninhabited rhino exhibit days after being reported missing. Though investigators found no evidence of foul play, a lawsuit and court ruling concluded that negligence on both sides contributed to his death. Together, these stories reveal the Oregon Zoo as a place where history, tragedy, and unanswered questions quietly coexist, long after the crowds have gone home.Visit our website! Find us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Patreon, & more! "With the perfect mix of melody, aggression, and energy, Portland, Oregon's FeverSleep land somewhere between the worlds of punk and grunge–if genres are your thing. But, this is no rehash of a bygone era. These well-seasoned musicians pull from a diverse array of influences to create something fresh but just familiar enough to feel like you're welcoming an old friend. Consisting of former members of Young Livers, Dikembe, and Lock and Key, FeverSleep's debut self-titled EP is characterized by its ferocious thrum of overdriven bass, prowling riffs, and soaring melodies rounded out with a touch of melancholy. Imagine a more melodic Helmet or a more aggressive Sonic Youth, buoyed throughout by a driving wall of noise and haunting choruses reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. and Constantines. Finally, they throw in some DC-influenced energy and vigor for good measure." Thanks for listening!!! Photo: Members of the MMIW Search & Hope Alliance attend a cadaver session led by Dr. William Borman, in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) Search teams working on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) cases must prepare themselves for the likelihood they will come across a body. One group based in Portland, Oreg. is proactively preparing volunteers for that encounter, as Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire reports. Inside an anatomy lab, William Borman, professor of basic sciences for the University of Western States, carefully turns a cadaver over on a metal table. Metal canopies cover human cadavers inside Linfield University's anatomy lab in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Photo: Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) A tinge of formaldehyde fills the air. Seven volunteers with the group, MMIW Search & Hope Alliance, examine its tendons, nerves, and organs. Kimberly Lining is the group's founder. She says she has seen death up close many times. “And I think through my years of traumatic experiences with violent death, I’ve seen a lot, it’s prepared me. I think just due to fire, like steel is forged through fire.” But for most people, exposure to death and corpses is not a recurring thing, so Lining reached out to Borman to arrange a visit. Not only does it gird people for when they find a body, but it helps them discern between human and animal remains. Two volunteers, Sabrina Griffith and Isabella Regalado, say they would recommend this experience. “Just seeing the veins, the actual ligaments, the bone, the muscles, it was quite surprising to see it and feel it in real life. I've only touched bones and stuff like that, so it’s very interesting to actually feel the inner part of our body.” “It’s actually been better than anticipated. I thought it would be a little bit more gruesome, but everyone has been very professional and understanding, and everyone has been doing their best to educate everyone else.” Lining and Borman remind people that viewing cadavers is not the same as coming across a corpse, whether that is in the wilderness or city. Such bodies are not preserved, and beyond what the cause of death inflicted, would be subject to the elements and scavengers. “If it’s in the wilderness, in the forest, bears, cougars, wolves … they’re gonna tear at stuff and leave the bone. So definitely pieces more than together.” Near the end of the visit, Borman sprayed a blue hydrating liquid to keep the cadavers from drying out and developing mold. He said everyone in Lining's group was respectful and asked great questions. “I’m pleased that we were able to make this happen. If she were interested in doing it again, I'd be open to doing it again.” Lining and her volunteers gave small gifts of gratitude to Borman and thanked him for his time. MMIW Search & Hope Alliance is preparing for two search efforts in the next few weeks. Jon Boutcher, Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, is asked about the arrest of Máire Mhic an Fhailí during a Policing Board meeting in September 2025. (Courtesy Policing Board / Facebook). An Irish language activist has won a landmark decision in Northern Ireland following her arrest during a protest. Seo McPolin has more from Ireland. Seventy-four-year-old grandmother Máire Mhic an Fhailí attended a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinian people last August in Belfast. She was among those arrested under the UK’s controversial Terrorism Laws because of her t-shirt. JJ Ó Dochartaigh from the Irish language band Kneecap wore the same T-shirt as Máire Mhic an Fhailí ahead of the band's 2025 Glastonbury set. (Courtesy Kneecap / X) During the arrest, English-speaking police officers were unable to understand her as she gave them her address – because she spoke in her Indigenous language of Irish. The Police Ombudsman ruled last week that the arresting officer should have taken reasonable steps to arrange a translation service – and that Mhic an Fhailí experienced “oppressive behavior”. The police watchdog also issued a policy recommendation for future engagements with Irish-language speakers. Mhic an Fhailí’s lawyer says this decision “puts a marker down” for how the police service must respect the Irish language moving forward. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. In this episode of John Solomon Reports, guest host Ben Whedon dives into the world of political satire and animation with Emily Youcis, the creator of the hit series, The Will Stancil Show. Emily shares her journey from encountering the controversial figure Will Stancil on social media to developing a parody show that humorously critiques his life and ideologies. With Stancil's unique persona as a social justice activist and his often contentious online presence, Emily reveals the layers of comedy and commentary that inspired her work.As the conversation unfolds, Emily discusses the innovative use of AI technology in animation, particularly her experience with the AI tool Sora, which has allowed her to create a groundbreaking animated series that blends humor with political commentary. She explains the labor-intensive process behind the scenes and how the rapid advancements in AI have transformed her creative output, enabling her to produce content that resonates with audiences while navigating the complexities of political discourse. We explore the show's unexpected rise in popularity, eclipsing traditional animated series and garnering attention from notable media outlets. Emily reflects on the cultural impact of the show and how it has sparked conversations across the political spectrum, even attracting the attention of the very subjects it parodies.Additionally, we discuss the intriguing feedback loop between the show and real-life events, as Will Stancil's actions seem to mirror the narratives crafted in the series, creating a surreal blend of art and reality. Emily shares her thoughts on the potential for AI to democratize creative expression while also acknowledging the barriers that still exist in the industry.Next, Ben is joined by renowned broadcaster and former communications advisor to President Trump, Steve Cortes. The two dive into the current tumultuous events unfolding in Minneapolis, where ICE deployments and recent shootings have ignited a media firestorm. Cortes shares his insights on how immigration remains a strong polling issue for Trump, even amidst challenges on the economic front. The discussion highlights the contrasting media narratives surrounding the shootings of Renee Goode and Alex Preddy, and the implications for public perception of law enforcement. Cortes reflects on the parallels to the 2020 riots, expressing concerns about the potential for civil unrest while emphasizing the importance of a robust federal response to protect citizens and uphold the law.As they analyze the administration's messaging strategies, Cortes critiques the inconsistencies that have emerged following the recent incidents, stressing the need for a unified communication approach to reinforce Trump's immigration agenda. He advocates for a focus on self-deportation incentives and effective law enforcement practices that prioritize public safety while addressing the complexities of illegal immigration. Finally, we sit down with Bobby Charles, the leading Republican candidate for governor of Maine, to discuss the pressing issues facing the state, particularly around immigration, public safety, and economic challenges. Charles shares his firsthand insights from his campaign efforts in Lewiston and Portland, where he emphasizes the growing concerns regarding illegal immigration and drug trafficking along the Canadian border. As Charles highlights the estimated 8,000 illegal aliens currently residing in Maine, he expresses alarm over the potential criminal elements within this population and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing these issues. He critiques the current Democratic leadership for fostering an environment of lawlessness and corruption, arguing that their policies undermine public safety and accountability. The conversation delves into the broader implications of these issues on Maine's communities, with Charles stressing the need for stronger federal cooperation to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He outlines his vision for restoring order and safety in the state, advocating for a renewed partnership between state and federal law enforcement agencies. We also touch on the critical topic of affordability, as Charles discusses the struggles faced by young people in Maine due to skyrocketing housing costs. He presents his plans to revitalize the housing market and reduce property taxes, aiming to make homeownership more accessible for the next generation while ensuring that seniors can remain in their homes without financial strain. As the primary election approaches, Charles shares his strategies for gaining support and flipping critical seats in the legislature to enact meaningful change. He reflects on the importance of restoring trust in government and the need for a strong leadership that prioritizes the values of hard work, public safety, and fiscal responsibility.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
