I had such a great night in my former home town of Portland recently playing this late summer set at The Get Down for BRÜT. Feeling post-Burning Man inspired, I delivered a set that's truly emblematic of where my sound is heading these days. (more similar to what you heard in my PTown/Gifford House set back in July)Learning the art of opening takes years and the first hour of this set is a true warm-up to welcome the crowd and slowly start filling the dance floor. DJ's should never start the night at an 11 and I have great honor & respect for the slow build and the long journey; music that weaves and tells a story over the course of the night. You'll hear a transition about an hour in when the crowd starts to usher in and the night really begins. From there on out, it's 90-minutes of tech house heaven.I've been going a bit acapella crazy recently and this night was no exception. I had a lot of fun playing several tracks for the first time including Adam Ten's "Just Kidding" (layering Shawnee Taylor's "Live Your Life" vocals over), N2N's new track "Naked," Vinter's "Space Pump," BLOND:ISH's new "Don't Cha" remix from The Pussycat Dolls, and my friend Simon Harrison's new original "Find Me On The Dance Floor" (also with a special acapella layered over!)I hope you enjoy this set... please repost, share, and say something in the comments if you do!

"The point of my book and the point of this big day of action that we're doing across the country is to drive that notion away that this isn't alternative energy, that it's the obvious, straightforward, common sense and very beautiful way to power the world going forward. To use the analogy I've been using, it's not any longer the Whole Foods of energy: nice, but pricey. It is now the Costco of energy: cheap available in bulk on the shelf, ready to go," says Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun.Today we have Bill McKibben, author, at last count, of 447 books, including his latest Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization. It's published by Norton and if ever there was an American president open to the idea of non-fossil-fuel energy solutions, it's this one.Photosynthesize, baby, photosynthesize, just rolls off the tongue. So if you're a real drip and don't know who Bill McKibben is, let me tell you a thing or two: He's the author 19 books, including his pioneering book on climate called The End of Nature, and one of my favorite books on rethinking consumerism, Hundred Dollar Holiday. Aside from being a journalist basically his entire life, he's an activist who helped found 350.org, and Third Act, which is a movement of Americans over 60 who bring their collective power to the climate and democracy fights. We call them silver-haired ponytails here in Eugene. And his latest venture is SunDay, a creative climate project that celebrates solar energy through art, storytelling, and public engagement. The day of action is Sunday, September 21, whereby they'll celebrate solar, host e-bike parades, give heat pump tours, and rally for change. There's a SunDay event in Eugene, but I'll unfortunately be burning fossil fuels that day driving up to Portland for a book event. But visit sunday.earth to find a local event near you. Those solar panel subsidies are going bye bye since the wannabe fuhrer will be gutting anything that doesn't belch CO2 into the air.Bill also writes the incredibly popular Substack The Crucial Years, which has nearly 100,000 subscribers. You can learn more about Bill and his books at billmckibben.com, and you're about to learn more about how he told William Shawn to fuck off, his start as a sports writer, being a pioneer writing about climate, and how he wrote Here Comes the Sun in about one month.Order The Front RunnerNewsletter: Rage Against the AlgorithmWelcome to Pitch ClubShow notes: brendanomeara.com
The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, conservative political activist, and founder of Turning Point USA, has sent shockwaves throughout the entire country. As of Thursday, Sept. 11, Kirk's killer is still at large. Authorities still do not know who the shooter is and what their motivations were, but that hasn't stopped the formation of a thunderous chorus of powerful people across the right and far-right spectrum calling for retribution, from President Trump and Elon Musk to far-right influencers like Chaya Raichik and Laura Loomer. What will the societal fallout be from this high-profile assassination? Will the public murder of Kirk unleash a new wave of political repression? What possibilities should people be prepared for? In this urgent panel discussion, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez poses these questions to three experts on far-right politics: Shane Burley, Natasha Lennard, and Jared Holt.Guests:Shane Burley is a journalist, organizer, and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author, co-author, and editor of numerous books, including Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism and Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It. Natasha Lennard is a columnist for The Intercept and the author of the book Being Numerous: Essays on Non-Fascist Life. She is the associate director of the Creative Publishing & Critical Journalism graduate program at the New School for Social Research in New York.Jared Holt is the co-host of the podcast Posting Through It. He is a journalist and research analyst who has covered political extremism and hate movements in the United States for nearly a decade.Additional resources: David Gilbert, WIRED, "‘War is here': The far-right responds to Charlie Kirk shooting with calls for violence"Daniel Slotnik, The New York Times, "The manhunt for Charlie Kirk's killer"Credits: Studio Production: David HebdenHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Follow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetworkBecome a member and join the Supporters Club for The Real News Podcast today!

After serving for eight years, Thuy returned to her adoptive hometown of Portland, Oregon and started her own business, a construction and roofing company called Acme High Performance. She is also a missionary with One Challenge and a coach of soccer, track, and lacrosse…spending her time traveling the world, using sports to bridge the gap with traumatized people in refugee camps in third-world countries and helps these kids process trauma by using sports as a way to create friendships and smiles. The new school year means that once again some kids are walking or biking through neighborhoods and on busy streets to get to class. Safe Routes to School is a nationwide, federally funded initiative that works to educate and encourage students to bike and walk to school safely. There are Safe Routes to School programs across Oregon, including one serving students in the Salem-Keizer School District. The Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School program started five years ago, but because of the pandemic, and the inability to reach students in schools, it didn’t really take off until fall 2022 when Beth Schmidt was hired to lead it. Since then, Schmidt has worked with the district and other partners to teach bus, pedestrian and bike safety, including PE classes that started last year in partnership with Cycle Oregon to help kids learn how to ride bikes and follow the rules of the road. Next month, the Portland-based nonprofit The Street Trust will be giving Schmidt an award for her efforts to advocate for the successful passage of SB 450, which Gov. Tina Kotek signed into law in June. It designates Nov. 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day in Oregon to honor Bridges’ courage in helping end school segregation in the U.S. Schmidt joins us to talk about her work in Salem and Keizer to make streets safer for students.
”Magic mushroom” edibles sold at smoke shops and other retailers might be missing psilocybin but can contain undisclosed ingredients, according to a joint study published Thursday. Oregon State University researchers collaborated on the analysis with Rose City Laboratories, a state-certified testing lab in Portland, and the manufacturer Shimadzu Scientific Instruments. The edibles, including gummies and chocolates, contained caffeine and synthetic psychedelics. Richard van Breemen worked on the research and is a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at OSU. “Syndelics represent a rapidly growing area of drug design, where medicinal chemists create novel compounds inspired by known psychedelic agents like psilocybin and LSD,” van Breemen said in a press release. He joins us with details of the study.

Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAY DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. This week TGTPTU covers the film Elephant, no not the 2000s school-shooter mood piece by Gus Van Sant filmed in Portland, OR and covered previously and paired with Scarface (1983, not the earlier, black-and-white 1932 Howard Hawkes version) in Episode 8 of this Squib Season (it's Season 15 after all, not Season 14's Redux where the hosts covered films already covered) but, rather, the 39-minute, made-for-British-TV short film directed by Alan Clarke also entitled ELEPHANT (1989). Chosen by host Thomas for its un-celebratory violence, the film tracks with Clarke's influential, wide-angle following shots (camera, not bullet) people who shoot other people (with bullets, not cameras) in mostly silent milieus but for environmental sounds, mostly very bloody. (As mentioned by cohost Ken, and for more on this camera placement and its effects and influence on Van Sant, see this video essay on the Film & Media Studies' YouTubeTM channel: https://youtu.be/Z5B8_IDhJQo.) Produced and defended by Danny Boyle, Elephant's unspoken (again, mostly silent with dialogue barely heard in just one scene between four blokes kicking around the football toward the middle of the flick) subject is The Troubles in the UK. In what is either bravery or foolery (callers into the network after this movie aired were split), working class and Brit-born Clarke--by then a celebrated veteran of the medium of the British TV issues film--stripped the original screenplay of dialogue when making the film in order to focus on the act of gun murder as was then currently occurring. With one un-notable exception, each of the eighteen scenes of gun violence has the shooter followed into the setting where the homicide is to occur, shoot his victim, leave followed by the camera/audience, and then cut back to silent moments of each murdered man filling the frame with his recently un-lifed corpse. Elephant would be Clarke's penultimate work, with The Firm (no, not the adaption of the John Grisham novel that gave Holly Hunter the nom for Best Supporting Actress the same year she won Best Actress for The Piano as The Firm you're thinking of is by Sydney Pollack) also shot for British television and aired in 1989 as his final. Clarke would cross the pond to see if he could sell out in America (according to Ken) and die in 1990 at the age of 54. The film resoundingly fails the Bechdel test. Host Ryan calls Clarke a coward. What happens when a fly fisherman ventures into the quiet lakes of Washington — and ends up in the middle of a scream-filled nightmare? In this gripping episode, we reconnect with Ted, the mysterious second witness from the infamous Deadman's Lake encounter. What began as a peaceful solo fishing trip during elk season in 2004 turned into a night of terror — a chilling, high-pitched scream shattered the silence, followed by eerie owl sounds and unexplained stomping just beyond the tent.Ted, a longtime musician from Portland with a deep sensitivity to sound, breaks down what he heard — and why it still shakes him to this day. You'll hear about his other strange experiences across the Pacific Northwest, including Mildred Lakes, Estacada, and the shadowy trails near Mount Hood.Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this episode reminds us: the forest is never truly silent.

On Wednesday, the Oregon Department of Forestry announced that the emerald ash borer has now been found in the Hazelwood neighborhood in East Portland and five other new sites in the north Willamette Valley. In addition to Portland, the highly invasive and destructive beetle has now been found near other urban areas in the region, including Beaverton, Banks and Oregon City. The Oregon Department of Agriculture said that the discovery of EAB in Portland has now put all of Multnomah County into the EAB quarantine zone, which also includes Washington, Yamhill, Marion and Clackamas counties. Native to Asia, EAB was first detected in Oregon in 2022 at an elementary school in Forest Grove. Considered to be the most destructive forest pest in North America, EAB has killed over 100 million ash trees nationwide since its arrival in the U.S. more than 20 years ago. Joining us to discuss the spread of EAB and how the public can help efforts to contain it are Cody Holthouse, manager of ODA’s Insect Pest Prevention and Management Program and City of Portland Forester Jenn Cairo.

Fifteen years after the arrest of Mohamed Mohamud, Portland writer Jamila Osman reflects on the aftermath of that time on the local Somali community in a new essay in Oregon Humanities. She joins us to discuss the essay.
What happens when violent rhetoric stops being taboo and becomes mainstream? A shocking Rutgers University study reveals just how far the extreme left has gone—nearly half of respondents justifying assassination against public figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk. From FBI director James Comey's veiled “86” threat, to Portland agitators rolling out guillotines, to online mobs celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk, the evidence is overwhelming: political violence is being normalized. In this episode, we expose the numbers, the culture behind them, and the chilling silence—or outright encouragement—of left-wing leaders who refuse to condemn it. This isn't just politics. It's a fight for whether America remains a nation of debate, or a nation ruled by fear.

Ever wished your vegetables could be the star of dinner instead of the side?In this bite-sized episode, we share delicious moments about the best things we ate this week to inspire each other – and you!By the end of this episode, you'll want to make a classic Italian take on pasta that will make the most of your zucchini bumper crop, and you'll also want to try a green bean dish that uses a very unexpected spice for extra flavor (and crunch!). Tune in for a quick dose of home cooking inspiration!***Links: Elizabeth Minchili's pasta with zucchini and herbs, and her TikTok that made Sonya want to cook it. Kari's favorite caramelized zucchini pasta by Ali Slagle for the NY TimesFrizzled beans with sizzled sesame and mint can be found in Justine Doiron's cookbook: Justine Cooks. To make: Justine chars the beans in a hot cast iron pan with a little olive oil – she does this in batches so the beans don't overcrowd the pan. Once the green beans are charred, you take them out, then in the same pan you toast raw sesame seeds, and right towards the end you add coriander seeds and dried mint. Then you add the beans back and toss it all together with some flaky salt, a splash of sherry vinegar, and a drizzle of honey. You can add pickled onions, too if desired!Another fun take on green beans and sesame flavors from Susan Spungen And a green beans with yogurt and dill recipe similar to what Sonya made. Money Life begins the first of three days of interviews from FinCon 2025, the annual gathering of financial content creators, which this year is in Portland, Ore., and which lets Chuck showcase a wide range of subjects. Today, those subjects include: — college savings and the changing landscape of consumers paying off college debt with Robert Farrington of TheCollegeInvestor.com. — crushing medical debt, and an unusual way for consumers to get out from under it with Jared Walker, founder of the non-profit fintech start up Dollar For. — a conversation that Chuck thinks may be the most unusual of his long career with comedian turned financial coach Lauren Baker, who also goes by the name "Firenze, the friendly FIndom" and whose interview will introduce you to the world of financial domination. — "How Financial Stuff Works," the long-hoped for literacy project of financial adviser Alex Whitehouse. — the changing state of financial content creators, what's dead, what's next and how artificial intelligence will impact it all with FinCon's founder, Philip Taylor of TheCreatorCPA.com. Plus, every Thursday on Money Life starts with the ETF of the Week, and Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, makes a multi-sector bond fund from a veteran fund manager his pick this week.

Comic Book Creator and LEGEND! (Recorded live at Tucson Comic Con Sunday, August 31, 2025) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Crow, Heavy Metal Magazine Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. In the late 70's and early 80's, self-published “Mini Comics” became a main artistic outlet, and while soliciting illustration work from local fanzines in Northampton Massachusetts, he met like-minded creator Peter Laird and the partnership studio, Mirage Studios was formed. Less than a year later in the middle of a late-night drawing session, Eastman doodled a new character he dubbed a “Ninja Turtle” to make Laird laugh—several sillier sketches and a final drawing of four characters later “Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” had officially entered the universe! Self-published in May of 1984 the first issue sold out of its 3000 copies overnight and quickly became a fan favorite. Catching the eye of Merchandising Agents and Hollywood Producers, Eastman and Laird maintained full control of their creations while guiding them through Toy Licensing, TV Series adaptation, as well as Feature Films, and by early 1990 the TMNT's were number one in all three categories. In between TMNT projects, Eastman launched a creator friendly publishing company, “Tundra Publishing” where projects like “The Crow” “From Hell” “Madman” and “Understanding Comics” first flourished, as well as purchased and published the world renowned “Heavy Metal Magazine” for more than twenty-five years. In 2020 based on an original 1987 concept by Kevin and Peter, Kevin adapted and launched The Last Ronin with longtime TMNT Writer/Co-Writer Tom Waltz. The epic tale quickly became the TMNT publishing event of the decade, both a critical success, and a New York Times Best Seller. The series continued with The Last Ronin: Lost Years in 2023 and 2024The Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution. When not having way too much fun writing and drawing on new TMNT projects, he launched a new maxiseries with Image Comics entitled, Drawing Blood as well as companion limited series the Radically Rearranged Ronin Ragdolls, with co-creator David Avallone, and artists Ben Bishop and Troy Little. Thanks to “THE BEST FANS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!” according to Eastman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continue to find their way into the hearts and imaginations of kids, large and small more than four decades later. Cowabunga! In 2025 Kevin, his wife Courtney and Team Eastman will be visiting comic conventions and signings around the world, ensuring they are always accessible and able to connect with fans as we all continue to Shellebrate the awesome legacy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This week, Julie & Brandy honor the children who were terrorized by a mass shooter at Annunciation School in Minneapolis. It's a heavy subject, that is EXTREMELY hard to listen to, so please listen with caution. In addition, they also break down the press conference held by the Epstein victims on Capitol Hill, which is also very triggering. It's a long & emotionally draining podcast, but the point is that we ALL have to support the innocent victims of our toxic culture.********CHECK OUT FREE EPISODES OF JULIE & BRANDY'S PATREON PODCAST**********NUTRAFOL HAIR SUPPLEMENTS: Get $10 off your first month's subscription + free shipping.
