Dog Bites, Talking Cats & The Songs We Never Want to Hear Again

We begin Episode 58 with one of the great questions of our time: why is everybody bringing their dog to the airport now? After seeing dogs everywhere at LAX—and hearing two cats meow their way through an entire flight—the crew falls directly into a pet-themed rabbit hole that somehow gets stranger from there.First up, we discover where getting bitten by a dog can really ruin your afternoon. A study looked at dog attacks, insurance claims, exposure to dogs, and legal protections for victims to determine the worst states for dog bites. New York takes the unfortunate overall crown, while Florida leads when it comes strictly to your chances of actually getting bitten. Meanwhile, dog-related homeowner insurance claims are becoming wildly expensive, and mail carriers continue doing one of the bravest jobs in America: walking directly toward houses containing animals that absolutely hate their pants.Naturally, this leads our funny podcast into science proving—or at least studying—something most pet owners already know: we talk to our animals like they're people. Not just “sit” and “stay,” either. We mean full conversations. The crew admits to giving pets updates before leaving the house, whispering compliments to one dog so the other one doesn't hear, telling cats “I love you,” debating which pet is secretly the favorite, asking dogs what they want to watch on TV, and generally treating animals like tiny roommates who contribute absolutely nothing financially.Rafe talks to Bo like an old man with stories from the good old days. Lern has to navigate the complicated politics of loving three cats while knowing Clover is her original girl. And the dogs have apparently learned how to spell W-A-L-K, meaning humanity has officially lost its last tactical advantage. Then we crack open the listener emails, where things take a surprisingly wholesome turn. One listener shares his sobriety story and how an embarrassing moment on a Cub Scout camping trip ultimately became the motivation that changed his life. Years later, he was able to talk about that experience with pride—and we're genuinely glad he shared it with the show.Don't worry. We immediately ruin the emotional maturity by talking about Tim Curry movies. That sends the crew back to 1993's The Three Musketeers, Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt, and the gloriously over-the-top “All for Love” combination of Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. This funny podcast briefly becomes a 1990s movie-and-music appreciation society nobody asked to join. Finally, a listener asks a dangerous question for people who have spent years working in radio: what song have you heard so many times that you never need to hear it again? For Lern, the answer comes with absolutely zero hesitation: Georgia Satellites' “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” She doesn't merely dislike it. She appears prepared to personally campaign against its continued existence on rock radio. Moon considers years of Foo Fighters and Shinedown exposure, while everybody tries to figure out which songs have permanently embedded themselves into their brains after decades around radio stations. It's pets, dog bites, cats with emotional leverage, Tim Curry nostalgia, listener stories, radio grievances, and one increasingly personal feud with the Georgia Satellites. In other words, another completely normal funny podcast from The Rizzuto Show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Things start surprisingly deep when Lern talks about listening to Rafe's appearance on The HoneyDew, where he discussed difficult experiences from childhood and finding comedy in darker moments. He explains the idea of turning life's lowlights into highlights, everybody agrees that nobody escapes childhood completely unscathed, and for one fleeting moment this sounds like a mature conversation between emotionally intelligent adults.Turns out King Scott likes his coffee like he likes his women... According to former Starbucks professionals, black-coffee drinkers might enjoy torturing themselves, caramel macchiato fans barely want coffee at all, vanilla-latte people play it safe, Frappuccino drinkers are basically ordering milkshakes, matcha people might be doing it for the aesthetic, and macchiato drinkers know exactly what they want—and apparently want the barista to know that they know.McDonald's fries enter the conversation. So does the Wendy's Frosty, Taco Bell's spicy potato soft taco, the Frisco Melt, Lion's Choice, Dairy Queen onion rings, Rally's fries, Del Taco, Freddy's and more. Nobody reaches a universal consensus because democracy has failed once again.Things somehow become less appetizing when the crew discovers a Walgreens three-in-one product described as a douche, enema and water-bottle combination system. There are some household products where “multipurpose” is a selling point. This may not be one of them. The show then gets into a study suggesting men have a complicated relationship with dieting, including the idea that some men may respond better to “goals” and “challenges” than the word “diet.” Rafe offers his own theory after seeing wildly confident dudes criticize women online while looking, in his words, like a thumb melting into a suit. Poetry remains alive in St. Louis. And because the current calendar apparently isn't irritating enough, Moon brings up a viral proposal to replace our 12 months with five beautiful 73-day monstrosities: Jebruary, Maple, Jaugust, Soctober and Nissember. Is a 73-day Jaugust horrifying? Absolutely. Are we intrigued by Soctober? Unfortunately, yes. Then Tupac conspiracy content leads into a survey asking whether Americans believe they could successfully fake their own deaths. Younger adults are more confident. Older adults have apparently lived long enough to understand that the IRS, prescription refills and bill collectors are undefeated.Du Quoin, Illinois is having a rough week, and this one hits close to home.Massive downtown fire in Du Quoin. Multiple businesses were destroyed, including Home Lumber Company, BJ's Garden Inn and other properties along the downtown business district. Making an already difficult situation even worse, the fire happened during the Du Quoin State Fair, one of the biggest economic weeks of the year for the small Southern Illinois community. From there, September 3rd's collection of completely necessary national holidays introduces National Welsh Rarebit Day, which briefly causes confusion over whether anyone is eating a rabbit. They're not. It's cheese. That discovery leads directly to Worcestershire sauce, pork-steak marinades and the shocking revelation that Rafe doesn't own a grill. After talking with Tim Virgin, she introduces a potential reality-dating concept called Rock Hard Island. The premise involves eligible bachelors from St. Louis rock radio, women applying to date them and enough trash-TV energy to immediately attract hypothetical sponsors. There isn't actually an island involved, but that's apparently a minor logistical concern. Even more alarming: sales is interested. Then Lern takes over for Crap on Celebrities with a packed entertainment rundown. There's a documentary about late Rush drummer Neil Peart featuring Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and fellow drummers including Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith and Danny Carey. Rush is also headed back to St. Louis, giving Moon another chance to see a band he thought he'd never get to experience after Peart's death. The crew runs through villains ranging from Cruella de Vil and Scar to Patrick Bateman, Magneto, John Doe and Dr. Evil, proving once again that this daily comedy show can turn almost any entertainment list into an argument. Finally, Moon breaks down which music genres are supposedly most popular in different states based on search trends, with pop leading the country, metal putting up an impressive fight and Sleep Token emerging as a heavily searched metal act.We ask one of the great questions of our time: why is everybody bringing their dog to the airport now? After seeing dogs everywhere at LAX—and hearing two cats meow their way through an entire flight—the crew falls directly into a pet-themed rabbit hole that somehow gets stranger from there. The crew admits to giving pets updates before leaving the house, whispering compliments to one dog so the other one doesn't hear, telling cats “I love you,” debating which pet is secretly the favorite, asking dogs what they want to watch on TV, and generally treating animals like tiny roommates who contribute absolutely nothing financially. What happens when a Three stops performing and starts telling the truth — even to herself? Anthony and I sat down with Steph Baron Hall, author of Enneagram in Real Life and host of the Enneagram in Real Life podcast, for a conversation that starts with instinctual stacking and ends up somewhere much deeper. Steph — a sexual (or "spark") dominant Three — unpacks how the sexual instinct differs from the social Three most people picture, why she was so often mistaken for a Four, and how she's learned to notice the exact moment she starts performing instead of being present. We move through the difference between achieving your identity and receiving it, the religious trauma that shaped Steph's relationship to spirituality, and why she's going back to school in her late thirties to become a therapist. Along the way, I offer a memorable image for the false self — the "pinched self" — and the three of us talk honestly about what it actually costs to tell yourself the truth, not just other people. BIG Life Devotional | Daily Devotional for Women

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2026 20:30

This story told by Jesus is quite different. Unlike all his other stories, this story includes specific names. This tells us it’s a true story of real people living real lives with a real destiny. These are true events. I’m a documentary junkie. It’s the only TV I ever watch. So imagine this story as we read it unfolding like a docuseries. I’ll split it into episodes for effect. Follow along in Luke 16: 19-31 Episode 1: “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.” —— Understand this scene. In these days, the rich were extravagant in their wealth and it was most displayed in their meals. The fatter a person was, the wealthier it showed them to be because they had the pure luxury of abundance. The rich would often wipe their messy food covered hands on pieces of bread while they feasted on their massive meals. And these pieces of bread used as napkins, were what the poor man named Lazarus lay at the gate begging for. The rich man was aware of Lazarus. He was aware of his need. And fully aware of his own ability to meet his need by simply affording him the bread where he wiped his hands. The rich man passed by him each time he left his palace. But, Lazarus was left laying there longing. Episode 2: “Finally the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’ But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from here.” —— So, they have both died, but their destinies were eternally different. Lazarus, the beggar, went to Heaven. The rich man went to hell. Why would that be? Lets be clear – it wasn’t because of money. Money has nothing to do with our future with God. You can’t buy your way into Heaven and you can’t spend your way into Hell. This is the great separation that Jesus warned us about in Matthew 25. He says, “There will be a time when all will be gathered in his presence and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. On his right, he will says, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. What you did this for the least of these, you were doing it to me.’ Then he will turn to those on his left and say ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. When you refused to help the least of these, you were refusing to help me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” Lazarus is on his right. The rich man is on his left. Lazarus is credited as righteous. The rich man is indebted to eternal punishment. And now, after their death, there’s no changing their fate. They can’t go back. They can’t cross over. They can’t change it. When time is up, eternity is sealed. It’s easy to twist this and assume there’s a heavenly reward happening for suffering, and a hellish punishment happening for refusing help. But that’s not what Jesus is teaching. The issue wasn’t Lazarus’s poverty or the rich man’s wealth. The issue was the heart. Lazarus wasn’t saved because he was poor. And the rich man wasn’t condemned simply because he was rich or greedy. Scripture is clear that salvation has never been something we earn by suffering, by giving, by serving, or by doing enough good things. We are saved by God’s grace. So what is Jesus exposing? A heart that could see suffering and remain completely unmoved. The rich man wasn’t unaware. That’s what makes this story so uncomfortable. Lazarus was lying at his gate. He knew his name. He knew his condition. He knew his need. And he had more than enough to meet it. The need wasn’t somewhere across town. It wasn’t hidden. It wasn’t complicated. It was literally at his doorstep. And every day, he stepped over it. The rich man’s problem wasn’t that he had possessions. His problem was that his possessions had possessed his heart. He had become so consumed with his own comfort that someone else’s suffering could sit at his gate without disturbing his life. The rich man’s greatest problem wasn’t what was in his bank account. It was what was missing from his heart. Compassion. Mercy. Generosity. Love. This was a heart issue. What happens in the heart eventually reveals itself in how we treat people. And his heart condition is what led him to an eternal place of misery. A hardened heart that had refused God. Episode 3: “Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father's home. For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don't end up in this place of torment.' “But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.'” —– Now, in this place of eternal torment, understanding what really brought him here was not accepting God and allowing his heart to be transformed, his concern turns to his brothers who are still alive. He knows it’s not too late for them. He begs for his brothers to be warned so they can have a changed heart and not be tormented as well. Imagine this for a moment. Imagine knowing what you did wrong and wanting desperately to go back and warn your loved ones, but not being able to. Wouldn’t that be torment in itself? But, my sister, here’s the beauty in this – we don’t have to wait until our eternal destination and then wish we could go back and tell others. We’ve been told what is coming – we already know – so the time we have here today is our opportunity to do precisely what we would want to do from our eternal destination. We would want to warn others. We would want to tell them the truth so they could avoid future torment. AND TODAY WE STILL HAVE THE GIFT OF TIME. One day, we won’t. Notice what the rich man is told – he’s told his brothers had the opportunity to read what was written. They’ve been warned. What was written? The Bible. Scripture was always there telling the truth, inviting a change of heart. Have we forgotten the power in God’s word? When is the last time you gave someone the gift of a Bible? Do you have an extra just ready to give someone who needs to know God’s truth and God’s promises? Episode 4: One last effort from the rich man to reach his brothers who are still alive with the warning from hell. “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.' “But Abraham said, ‘If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'” ——- The rich man thinks of someone came back from the dead and told his brothers they would surely repent of their sins and turn to God. But God knows better. Do you know how? BECAUSE IT HAPPENED. Someone did rise from the dead – that was his son Jesus. And even with Jesus rising from the dead and reports of him being seen again, evidence of his Holy Spirit then filling people – still people choose not to believe and turn to God. It’s still happening today. Jesus came back from the dead to tell us, and we still ignore him. We have His Word. We have His warning. We have His invitation. We have His Spirit. We have the testimony of people whose lives have been transformed by Him. And most importantly, we have Jesus. The rich man wanted a miracle to change his brothers’ hearts. But he is told, “They already have what they need. They have God’s Word. They have the truth. They have the opportunity to respond.” And so do we. We don’t need another sign. We need a surrendered heart. That’s the sobering message of this story. The greatest danger isn’t that we don’t have enough evidence. It’s that we can have all the evidence in the world and still choose not to let God change our hearts. So while we still have time, let God search yours. Don’t wait for eternity to recognize what matters eternally. Don’t wait until the chasm is fixed forever to wish you had crossed it today. Don’t wait until someone you love is gone to wish you had told them about Jesus. Don’t wait until your heart is so hardened that you no longer hear His voice. Today, you can respond. Today, you can surrender. Today, you can soften your heart. Today, you can love the person at your gate. Today, you can give someone a Bible. Today, you can tell someone about Jesus. Today, you can turn toward God. Because there is one gift we have right now that the rich man no longer had: TIME. Time to choose. Time to repent. Time to believe. Time to love. Time to obey. Time to tell someone else. One day, our time will be finished. And when it is, our eternity will be sealed. So don’t waste the gift you’ve been given today. Let God have your heart while there is still time. Let this question settle into your heart today, “What am I doing with Jesus while I still have time?” Follow Pamela on Instagram – https://instagram.com/headmamapamela Or Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/pamela.crim Find out more about BIG Life – http://biglifehq.com

Once you hear Jo's "ask forgiveness, not permission" approach, you'll understand exactly why. Jo Gibson is an army wife. Her closest family lives nine hours away. Her insurance meant she had to give birth in a hospital, with a rotating team of midwives she'd never met before — and no real option to switch providers. On paper, that's a tough setup for the unmedicated birth she wanted. But Jo did something I love. Instead of asking permission, she decided to ask forgiveness.

Could some of the symptoms you've learned to live with — brain fog, fatigue, headaches, hormonal changes, or simply not feeling like yourself — have less to do with what's happening inside your body and more to do with the environment you're living in? In this episode of the HEAL with Kelly Podcast, I sit down with Ariana Thacker, chemical engineer and founder and CEO of MoldCo, whose own unexpected health crisis led her to investigate one of the most overlooked environmental factors affecting our health: mold exposure. We talk about why mold-related illness can be so difficult to recognize, why conventional testing often completely misses it, and the surprising reason two people living in the exact same home can have completely different experiences. Ariana also challenges some of the biggest assumptions we have about where mold exists — including why newer homes aren't necessarily in the clear. We explore the emerging connections researchers are seeing between our environments and everything from brain and immune health to hormones, metabolism, and chronic illness. And Ariana shares what she wishes she had known before getting sick, how to begin thinking differently about the health of your home, and why mold may only be one piece of a much bigger environmental conversation.   If you've ever had symptoms you couldn't quite explain, wondered whether your home could be affecting how you feel, or simply want to know what may be hiding in the places you spend the most time, this conversation will change the way you look at your environment — and your health. Some '80s bands sold millions of records. Some filled arenas. Some became so permanently embedded in pop culture that you can't walk through a grocery store without hearing them over the frozen peas. And then there are the bands that somehow found us anyway. This week on Stuck in the '80s, we're celebrating Book of Love and a handful of other synth-pop bands that deserved a little more attention the first time around — and whose music might sound even better today. Our centerpiece is a conversation with Book of Love singer Susan Ottaviano. Book of Love arrived in the mid-'80s with a sound that never fit comfortably into one box. Were they synth-pop? New wave? Alternative? Dance? College rock? Maybe the fact that nobody could quite figure that out is one reason the music has aged so well. Susan talks with Spearsy about the band's beginnings, the influence of groups such as The Cure and The Slits, the importance of New York's music and art scene, and what Book of Love learned when they suddenly found themselves touring with Depeche Mode. There's also a fascinating discussion about what happens to music decades after its original release. Songs get rediscovered. Movies and streaming introduce bands to people who weren't alive the first time around. Music that once sounded like it belonged to a very specific moment can suddenly sound contemporary again. And then comes our favorite question: the Podcast Time Machine. If Susan could go back and change one moment in Book of Love history, what would she do? Her answer: Get a better lawyer. Ouch. She also considers another tantalizing bit of alternate '80s history: What might have happened if Book of Love had ended up on Mute Records, the label famously associated with Depeche Mode? Susan also gives us an update on Book of Love's future. This could be the band's final full tour, although she says the group still plans to make more music. After the interview, Brad and Spearsy keep the synthesizers plugged in for five more bands from the second half of the '80s that they wish more people had discovered. There's Canada's Kon Kan, whose “I Beg Your Pardon” brilliantly repurposed Lynn Anderson's “Rose Garden” for the dance floor. Germany gives us Cetu Javu and Camouflage, two bands that inevitably drew comparisons to Depeche Mode. Australia contributes Boxcar, who had the unenviable task of bringing electronic music into a guitar-heavy pub-rock scene. And finally there's Red Flag, whose story begins with brothers Chris and Mark Reynolds and takes a much sadder turn in the years that followed. Maybe that's part of the fun of being Stuck in the '80s after all these years. There are still bands to rediscover, songs that deserve another spin and stories we somehow missed the first time around. So dust off the synthesizer, apply an unreasonable amount of reverb and join us for Book of Love — and five more synth-pop bands we wish we'd heard more from. Destination On The Left
    493. How Storytelling Transforms Artisan Traditions into Meaningful Travel Experiences, with Patrick Greene

    Destination On The Left

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2026 26:44

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Patrick, a documentary filmmaker and creator of Made with Love, a series that shines a light on artisans, their crafts, and the traditions behind them. Patrick shares how a project born during the COVID-19 pandemic evolved into a television series and a collection of small-group artisan tours designed to bring travelers behind the scenes and into deeper connection with the people and places they visit. We discuss the value of authentic storytelling, the unexpected overlap between filmmaking and tour operations, and how tourism can help preserve cultural traditions while creating meaningful connections between travelers and local communities. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How a personal family experience during the pandemic inspired the creation of Made with Love Why authentic human connections can create more lasting travel memories than visiting well-known attractions alone How Patrick transitioned from documentary filmmaking into creating bespoke, small-group artisan tours What makes working with local producers and community connections essential to authentic cultural storytelling How tourism can support artisans while helping preserve crafts, traditions, and cultural heritage Why small-group experiences can foster meaningful connections between travelers, artisans, and fellow guests What destinations and tour operators can learn from creating story-driven experiences rooted in local people and place From Filmmaking to Meaningful Travel Experiences Patrick's journey into tourism began with documentary filmmaking and a desire to share the people and places he encountered while producing Made with Love. During a year living in Bologna, Italy, with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic, he discovered the depth of Italy's artisan culture and saw firsthand how shutdowns and the absence of tourism were affecting local makers. Their passion and dedication resonated with him, inspiring him to use his storytelling skills to give these artisans a platform.  That experience eventually led to the creation of Made with Love as a television series and, later, the development of artisan-focused tours. As Patrick explains, the skills required to produce television translate surprisingly well to tour operations, from managing logistics and accommodations to creating itineraries and taking care of a group. More importantly, both forms of work depend on understanding people and creating an experience that allows their stories to come through authentically.  Putting Authenticity and Human Connection at the Center One of the central themes Patrick explores is the difference between simply seeing a destination and genuinely connecting with it. While iconic attractions remain important, he believes travelers often remember the people they meet and the stories they hear long after the trip is over. His tours are intentionally designed to move beyond crowded hotspots and give guests opportunities to meet artisans in their workshops, ask questions, and experience their crafts firsthand.  The small size of the groups helps make those connections possible. Patrick shares how artisans who had never welcomed travelers into their studios have embraced the opportunity to share their work, while guests gain a more personal understanding of the communities they are visiting. Those shared experiences also create connections among travelers themselves, with guests returning for additional Made with Love tours in other countries.  Tourism as a Tool for Preserving Craft and Culture At the heart of Made with Love is a mission to support artisans and help preserve the crafts and traditions that contribute to a community's cultural identity. Patrick shares stories of generational artisans, including families who have practiced the same craft for many generations, and describes the importance of creating opportunities for these makers to share their work with visitors.  The relationship can benefit everyone involved. Travelers gain access to experiences they might not otherwise encounter, while artisans have an opportunity to share their knowledge and generate additional income through guest purchases. As Patrick looks toward expanding the series and tours into new countries, he emphasizes the importance of working with local producers and community connections to identify crafts that are genuinely rooted in each destination. For him, authentic storytelling starts with listening to local people and allowing their culture and traditions to shape the experience.  Resources: Made with Love on PBS: pbs.org/show/made-with-love/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-greene-34a9876/

She may even worry that you're judging her. Sadly, she may even feel that her heart doesn't matter to you. I don't think that's what you mean. I think you may just not know what to say. It can feel awkward and risky and you don't want to look stupid. But here's the thing: Jesus wasn't silent. He spoke. He served people with His words. Not to perform. Not to impress. To help them. So here are the words I often invite men to say. It might be worth you writing these down: "Honey, how are you feeling?" "That seems really hard. How are you doing?" "Is there anything you want to share?" Yes, it'll feel awkward. Yes, she might not respond the way you hope. But what you just communicated is: I care about your heart. Do it again next week. And the week after. It compounds. And if you've been wrong, don't just change the behavior. Use words -- don't be silent. I encourage you to apologize. And I invite you to be specific. Own it. Character is revealed more by what you repent of -- even than what you do (Dallas Willard). Silence after conviction isn't golden. It can actually be cowardice wearing a mask. I know I've been there more than I'd like to admit. Listen to this week's episode. Then, say words to show you care. And if you're a graduate ready to get back in the game, Proactive launches with a special graduate kickoff. Discounted price disappears September 10th. We had slowly lost connection and focus on one another. Life including family, work and ministry took focus on our time and our lives. We were doing everything for everybody else and found ourselves absent of time for each other."[after coaching] "Awareness, understanding, joy, health, compassion, intimacy and godliness Growth of myself and our relationship. Seeing the beauty in my bride. Pursuing it with vigor and not worrying about vulnerability and getting shot down. The program in itself was a major celebration."     Here is an AI-generated summary of today's episode: The Harm Of Silence in Marriage: Why the Words You're Not Saying Are Hurting Your Marriage Silence can be wise. Silence can also be devastating. And if you're a man sitting next to your wife while she's in pain, saying nothing because you "don't know what to say," this episode is for you. Belah gets direct about the difference between powerful silence and painful silence, why men struggle to speak up, and what Jesus modeled about using words to serve the people assigned to you. Over 1,000 Coached Directly DYM recently reviewed the numbers: Belah has personally coached over 1,000 people in just a handful of years. If you're ready for coaching that leads to real transformation, the track record is there. Introducing Proactive: For Graduates and New Clients Maybe you went through a DYM program but fell off the wagon. Maybe the timing wasn't right, the season was hard, and you couldn't fully lock in. Proactive is a brand-new offering: four times less time required than the intensives, but with significant accountability and community. For graduates, there's a discounted price and a dedicated kickoff call. That pricing disappears September 10th. Brand new to DYM? Visit delightyourmarriage.com/cc to talk to a clarity advisor. Silence When You Should Be Speaking Belah hears it constantly from the men she coaches: "She was upset and I was there for her. My presence was enough." Her response: No, it wasn't. When your wife is in pain and you say nothing, here's what she hears: You don't care You're judging her Her feelings don't matter to you The truth? Most men just don't know what to say. They're terrified of looking foolish or making it worse. But silence in that moment is more painful than imperfect words. The Phrases That Change Everything Write these down. Put them somewhere you'll see them: "Honey, how are you feeling?" "That seems really hard. How are you doing?" "Is there anything you want to share?" "I know this is hard for you." Maybe add a touch on the shoulder. It doesn't need to be a monologue. It just needs to show you care about her heart. Will she respond perfectly the first time? Maybe not. Do it again next week anyway. What you're communicating over time is: your feelings matter to me. Jesus Wasn't Silent Jesus was a servant leader. He washed feet. He made breakfast. He spoke, not to perform or to be admired, but to serve the people God assigned to Him. He was assigned to 12. Not the whole crowd. He prayed for them (John 17). He explained parables to them that He didn't explain to the crowds. He rebuked Peter directly: "Get behind me, Satan. You are mindful of the things of man and not the things of God." James says the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, then gentle. But it's not silent. Jesus spoke because speaking was service. Your wife is your first human assignment. Love your neighbor as yourself, and your neighbor is the one under your roof. Why Men Stay Silent (The Fall Guy Illustration) Belah shares a scene from the movie The Fall Guy: a stuntman who can jump through fires but hides himself the moment he feels weak. He breaks off contact with the woman he loves because he can't bear for her to see him as less than strong. His confession later: "I tried so many times to say something, and I couldn't think of the right words. And as I'm trying, the time passes, and then I think it's too late. So I just stay silent." This is the pattern Belah sees in real men, real marriages. They don't want to look silly, weak, or incompetent. And so they say nothing. And the silence becomes a wall. The antidote? Practice. Look a little foolish. Do the Chicken Dance if you have to (yes, Belah used to make men do that on coaching calls). Because if you're not willing to do something new, nothing will change. Character Is Revealed by What You Repent Of Dallas Willard: "Character is often revealed more by what you repent of than what you do." Belah shares a story from her husband's pickup soccer game. A skilled player accidentally stepped on her, hard. What set him apart from every other man on that field? He came over, shook her hand, and said specifically: "I didn't realize it was you. Instinct kicked in. I was too rough. I apologize." That apology made her respect him far more than if he'd just treated her gently in the first place. Owning it is strength, not weakness. The SHORE Apology: Be Specific If you're not specific in your apology, the other person doesn't even know if you understand why they're hurt. A vague "I'm sorry" leaves them wondering: does he even know what he did? Was it your tone? Your timing? Your words? A specific phrase? Belah shares her own example: she brought something up at the wrong time in someone's life. The content wasn't wrong. The tone wasn't wrong. The timing was wrong, and it caused pain. She had to own that specifically. When Silence IS Powerful Not all silence is bad. Sometimes you need to stop talking so the Holy Spirit can do His work. In marriage conflict, the back-and-forth cycle (text after text, argument after argument) often keeps both people justified in their reactions. He does something that makes her feel unsafe, she disrespects him, and it spirals. But if you pause, if you walk yourself into calmness and stop needing the last word, you create space for conviction. The Holy Spirit can work in silence. You don't have to win the argument. You just have to stop feeding the fire. Your Assignment Write down these phrases and use one this week: "How are you feeling?" "That seems hard. How are you doing?" If you owe an apology, go be specific. What exactly did you do? Name it. Practice looking a little silly. New behavior is awkward at first, like learning to ride a bike. Know when to speak and when to be silent. Speak when she's hurting. Be silent when the argument is spiraling. Your marriage is worth the awkwardness. Your legacy depends on it. Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, …. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the Law. For the Commandments … are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the Law. (Romans 13:1-3, 6-10)

What if the first person you need to regulate isn't your child, your partner, or anyone else around you?  What if it's you? In this episode of The Love Your Life Show, we're talking about a skill that can completely change the way you handle conflict, big feelings, and other people's problems: regulating yourself before you try to regulate someone else. If you're anything like me, when someone around me is upset, frustrated, angry, or uncomfortable, I feel the urge to jump in. To give advice! To fix it! To explain why they should think about it differently! All in an effort to try to make "the problem" go away. But here's what I've learned as an emotional intelligence coach and mom.  What if we're the problem?!

What do you do when your partner keeps telling you they love you and want the relationship to work… but you're the only one actually doing anything to make it better? You're the one bringing up what isn't working. You suggest therapy. You initiate the hard conversations. You try to repair after a fight. You read the books, listen to the podcasts, work on yourself and keep giving them another chance. And they say they hear you. They may even agree with you. But then nothing really changes. That's the situation Sarah brings to me in this episode, and it raises a question I hear all the time in my practice: How long are you supposed to keep trying when someone says they want the relationship, but their actions tell a different story? Because love does matter. But love alone doesn't make a relationship work. At some point, your partner has to be willing to help create the relationship they say they want. We talk about how to tell the difference between someone who genuinely wants to grow but is struggling, and someone who has gotten comfortable letting you carry the emotional weight of the relationship. And then there's the harder question: If you already know this isn't enough for you, what are you actually afraid will happen if you leave? For a lot of people, that's where things get really interesting. We stay because we've invested years. Because we're afraid of starting over. Because we hear a clock ticking. Because some part of us believes an unsatisfying relationship is still safer than the possibility of having no relationship at all. In this episode, I talk about: Why “I love you” has to be backed up by behavior How to know whether your partner is actually willing to work on the relationship Why you can't do enough emotional work for two people The role fear plays in keeping us in relationships long after we know something has to change Why a clear boundary or ultimatum isn't necessarily manipulation What to say when you need your partner to understand that things cannot continue as they are How to decide when you've tried enough If you've been carrying your relationship and wondering how much longer you're supposed to keep trying, I want you to hear this: You don't have to decide today whether you're leaving forever. But you do have to stop confusing someone's intention to change with actual change. At some point, you have to pay attention to what they're doing, not just what they keep promising you they're going to do. If you'd like to ask a question or get some advice languageoflovepod@gmail.com or leave a voicemail at languageoflovepod.com to have your own question answered in a future session. Serving is beautiful, but there's a shadow side to it, the point where selflessness turns into self-erasure and a person, more often a woman, slowly disappears inside their own marriage or role. In this episode, Christa gently names coercive control, the slow stripping away of a person's freedom, voice, and even their grip on reality, and how it can hide behind spiritual words and show up alongside narcissism. She reframes boundaries as part of how love stays healthy and safe, sometimes even lifesaving. If this names something you're living, you don't have to carry it alone. Christa shares real support, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You were never meant to disappear. You were meant to be seen, safe, and whole. Listen here! Watch on YouTube!
