Hey, Brave Table fam! In today's conversation, Dr. Scott Lyons and I delve into the profound impact of trauma on the body and the pivotal role of somatic therapy in the healing process. We discuss somatic therapy's focus on reconnecting with the body's primary language of sensation, breath, and movement as a means of effectively addressing trauma. Furthermore, Dr. Lyons underscores the importance of practitioners cultivating their own embodiment and self-awareness to better support clients on their healing journeys. We will learn: The hidden phenomenon of self-loss that might be dictating your life choices without you even knowing it. How to differentiate between empowering oneself and using "authenticity" as an excuse for unhelpful behaviors. The most powerful questions to ask yourself to unveil your life's purpose. Have you ever felt like you've just completely lost yourself? Maybe you've been in a relationship where you ended up blending so much into their world, their likes and dislikes, that you lost sight of your own. Or perhaps, growing up, you learned to put everyone else first to get by, carrying that habit into adulthood. Or you've chased down all the milestones of success society laid out, only to realize they don't actually make you feel fulfilled. It's like there's a piece missing, right? So the question is, how do you get back to yourself when you've gone too far? Or even when you've never quite found yourself in the first place? That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Sara Kuburic. She is an existential psychotherapist, consultant, and author of "It's On Me". She is passionate about helping people seek change and live authentic, free, and meaningful lives. Her interest in psychology stems from her personal experience living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human. If you just can't wait to dive into this topic, I need to tell you about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: SoulStrength Activation launches this week. I only have two spots left. We're going to access your inner power (that's figuring out your unique gifts and vision), reprogram your mind for unshakeable self-belief, so you stop talking yourself out of the life you're meant to live, and then create the life that truly fulfills you. So that you never wake up with that pit in your stomach that one more year has gone by and nothing has changed- ever again. And there are many perks for this founding group. Send me an email, and we'll hop on a call and see if we can squeeze you into this group so that your life can start to change now. 'What if I die before I have the chance to exist?' An existential crisis, or existential dread, can be described as persistent negative feelings and emotions linked to questioning the value of your life and how you are spending it. An existential crisis may result from intense feelings of despair as you consider questions like, "What is the point?” or “Why does any of this matter?” And these strong emotions can increase when your questions remain unanswerable. An existential crisis can happen to anyone, leading many to question their existence, identity and purpose in life. Experiencing an existential crisis may cause you to feel angry, helpless, lost, panicked and is usually accompanied by dread, anxiety, stress and depression; often to such a degree that they disturb your normal functioning in everyday life. But it doesn't have to be a bad thing or something to fear. Experiencing an existential crisis forces you to examine your life and consider “how can I show up in the world that means something to me?” Dr. Sara Kuburic is an existential psychotherapist, speaker, essayist, columnist, consultant, influencer and author of ‘It's On Me. Accept hard truths, discover your self, and change your life'. IT'S ON ME is a guide to identifying self-loss, and discovering the freedom that comes from taking responsibility for how we live. It offers an enlightening blueprint to find your own answers to the questions “who am I?” and “why am I here?” Known as the millennial therapist online (with over 1.7 million followers on Instagram), Dr. Sara believes that “in order to be who we truly are, we need to shelve who we are not.” Dr Sara talks about how her own existential crisis changed the trajectory of her entire life and put her on the path to a life of alignment, authenticity and purpose. Host Gabby and Dr. Sara also talk about the mental health ramifications of not living a life true to your beliefs and values… and how it's so easy to get lost in the labels and expectations of family, friends, work and society, so you don't even realise who you have become isn't who you are supposed to be. Dr. Sara is a passionate advocate for being the leading character of your own life. She believes we need to stop pretending and choose the truth. To all who feel lost, it's never too late to steer yourself home. It's time for this week's podcast therapy session and we've got another great therapist in our “office” as part of our For the Love of Therapy series. Dr. Sara Kuburic is an existential psychotherapist, author and the force behind The @Millennial.Therapist account on Instagram. Dr. Kuburic believes that each of us is a free and responsible agent who determines our own development through acts of our will. Though this isn't always a popular view to take, as we often look to outside forces to blame for our unhappiness, Dr. Kuburic wants us to understand that we have this amazing opportunity to engage in life and we can take ownership and responsibility over our choices. In that vein, she asks a very important question: how much of what we deal with in life happens to us, and how much of it did we inflict on ourselves? (that's a fun thing to spend a few hours pondering). But as a therapist, she helps people find tools to address whatever stage of life they're–maybe it is a bad situation and you just can't change it–but as she likes to ask: “what can you change or how can you change your attitude so the situation is less painful for you?” In addition to thinking about our lives existentially, Jen and Dr. Kuburic also discuss the concept of self-loss and how we can deceive ourselves into thinking we're living the life we want, when our bodies are telling us otherwise by devolving into depression, anxiety and panic. Jen and Dr. Kuburic get honest about: What it's like when you love the “idea” of who you are more than who you actually are–and how to stop lying to yourself What happens when not making a change in your life actually becomes more painful than changing Realizing that our bodies do have limits–no matter how strong you think you are or how strong you've been—your body is sending up red flags with feelings of anxiousness, fear or panic for seemingly no reason How sometimes our dedication to make something work can be so all consuming–even if that thing isn't the right thing for our lives and hat commitment, which is normally a good quality, can lead us to our weakest moments if we don't face up to the truth * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I think I got into psychology to try to understand what makes humans tick and try to understand my own human experience.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “We get to engage in life; we can take ownership, we can take responsibility, we can make choices, and I think that that's really how I see human suffering. My question is always, ‘how much of it happened to you? How much of it did you inflict on yourself?'” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “I think if you're stagnant, that's where the loss happens. That's when we overcommit to one version of ourselves. When you're not being stagnant, you are always being fluid–I think you're understanding the assignment, which is constant creation and adaptation of yourself to fit your experiences, your context, and what life is asking of you in that moment.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Stop assuming you know someone well enough to stop paying attention.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “I think having someone that I've known for eight years sit me down and just be like, ‘Hey, are you happy,” was the first time anyone, including myself, asked that question.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Someone else made the mess and now you have to clean it up when it wasn't your mess. But, the reason you're cleaning it up is because you deserve not to live in a mess, not because they deserve for you to clean it up. It's for you.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Until we understand what the consequences of our actions or inactions are, it's going to be really hard to take the next steps.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic Resources Mentioned in This Episode: It's On Me: Accept Hard Truths, Discover Yourself and Change Your Life by Dr. Sara Kuburic Dr. Sara Kuburic's USA Today Column Guest's Links: Dr. Sara Kuburic's Website Dr. Sara Kuburic's Instagram Dr. Sara Kuburic's Facebook Dr. Sara Kuburic's Twitter Dr. Sara Kuburic's Pinterest Dr. Sara Kuburic's Substack Connect with Jen! Text Hawk to 66866 to become part of "Mindful Monday." Join 10's of thousands of your fellow learning leaders and receive a carefully curated email from me each Monday morning to help you start your week off right... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Change happens when we feel empowered. It's on us to take responsibility for our lives and help others take responsibility for theirs. As leaders, change is more likely to happen for the people we are serving if we help them feel empowered. Listening is not a passive activity. Take it seriously. It starts with genuinely caring for the person you're in conversation with. “Being disliked is a rite of passage.” Being disliked is normal. Being uncomfortable about being disliked is also normal. Reminding your Self that how you feel about your Self matters more than how others feel about you is key. Sense of self – “Sense of self is not something that is found… We create our sense of self…” "My interest in psychology stems from my personal experience living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human." This book is about facing ourselves –whatever version that might be, regardless of whether or not we like the person we see reflected back to us. It's about what's possible once we realize that we are responsible for who we become and how we live our lives (a daunting, but profoundly liberating idea). IT'S ON US to figure out the two most essential questions: "Who am I" and "Why am I here?" and then live accordingly. "I am thankful for my struggle because, without it, I wouldn't have stumbled across my strength." Repeat out loud: "I will stop giving second chances to people who don't want it, won't use it, or don't deserve it." "The deepest form of loneliness comes from being estranged from ourselves, not from others." "Comparison doesn't just steal our joy, it also screws with our perspective." "Mistakes don't have to define you. But what you choose to do after a mistake often does." "Just a gentle reminder: The worst-case scenario that you're playing out in your head is probably not going to happen." "Don't confuse the snippets you get to see of someone's life (through media or a casual conversation) as their whole story. Give each other the courtesy of curiosity. Allow people to be undefined in your mind. Actively seek to see them, and allow them to show you who they are." "If you don't have all the information, stop filling in the blanks with your imagination, fears or projections. It's better to learn to sit with an unclear picture than to carry around an inaccurate one." "Instant gratification can be a form of self-harm." "If you're doing the work, you deserve to be with someone who is also doing the work. It's simple." "Relationship tip: When someone tells you what they want (or don't want) through words or actions — listen. Stop assuming you know better than they do. It's not your job to read their mind, anticipate their needs, or save them."
With her many millions of faithful social media followers Dr. Sara Kuburic, otherwise known as ‘The Millennial Therapist', pops by today to talk with Catt. Her new book, “It's On Me” begins with her own story of surviving a paralyzing panic attack, an experience that ultimately sent her on a mission to explore true personal peace and happiness in the most intimate way possible. Today she is sharing her wisdom and expertise with all of us. An existential psychotherapist, Sara helps us understand the power we each independently have to create the life that we want and discover the joy we desire. Why self-loss can be a tool to reigniting our life, why self-betrayal holds us back, how boundaries as virtues rather than rules can help us stay true to our beliefs, and more. If you find yourself asking “Who Am I?” you're not alone and this discussion will be helpful in getting you closer to the answer. Thank you to our sponsor SAKARA for making Catt Sadler Now possible! What does it truly mean when we say closure comes from us and what if we feel like the relationship isn't really over? When you really think about it - no one ever really goes away completely. They either live in our minds, our hearts or both. From time to time we may find ourselves in a chapter in our lives where we may be dealing with a generous amount of unanswered questions and the lingering feeling of not knowing if we made the right choice. From dealing with a relationship ending, to trusting yourself again, and of course the struggles we face when giving and receiving the honest, and at times, brutal truth - we can't help but to desperately search for the closure we need in order to move forward in life. When focusing on the topic of honesty - I find myself searching for it but am I really ready to receive it - unfiltered and void of it being sugarcoated? How does honesty play a role when seeking closure and what do we do when self trust and self forgiveness are not things that we have yet mastered? How do we not fall into the trap of believing that closure comes from those who have potentially hurt us and where an apology is still pending? In today's episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sara Kuburic, who is also better known as the Millennial Therapist for her instagram account where she shares tips and content related to mental health, self reflection and real life human experiences. I am truly grateful to have had this discussion with Sara - and her ability to lead with compassion in answering every question I had asked. We also discussed the struggles of accepting how others may not even realize what they have done to us, if it's even possible to go back to who we used to be before certain relationships ended, how self sabotage can sneak it's way into the decisions that we make for ourselves and so much more!Enjoy and follow the pod on Instagram:@unsweetenedandunfilteredFollow Sara Kuburic on Instagram:@millennial.therapistCheck out Sara Kuburic's site:Click Here

This is a special conversation for me as we are both originally from the Balkans and we were both deeply impacted by the events of war each one in our own way. I think this episode touches on topics that are timely taken into account what is happening in Ukraine and the impact it has on all of us. Having both Ukrainian and Russian friends I really think we need as much compassion for our fellow humans as we can muster at the moment. This interview is a reminder of the scars that wars leave on our soul and a plea to stop the cycle of retraumatization. As @corymuscara would put it I believe that the world needs more minds that are equipped to be with the complexity of life. Minds that can hold nuance and polarity. Minds that can stay centred, grounded and open to the full range of what it means to be human. Sara is definitelly one of those minds, and I invite you to find that capacity in yourself. Sherry kicks off this week explaining her love/hate relationship with acrylic nails, and then she and Carla welcome Sara Kuburic, existential psychotherapist, consultant, writer, and columnist for USA Today. Sara specializes in identity relationships and moral trauma and explains how cheating can affect our identity and self-perception. The group discusses how not to blame the partner that got cheated on, why setting boundaries upfront is crucial, and Sara gives a glimpse into her new book out next fall. What You'll Hear In This Episode: Sherry and Carla discover they have yet another thing in common — a latex allergy! More about the Love Fix Program, set to launch soon! From an existential perspective, it's hard to separate your morality from your identity. So how can cheating affect how an individual sees themselves? Cheaters often have to reconceptualize who they are as a person and come to terms that they can do something as hurtful to their partner as cheating. The dissonance of who they think they are and their actions can cause trauma. What do you say to a cheater? Why Sara, Sherry, and Carla don't necessarily agree with the notion that people can't change, and how that can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Interested in connecting with Sara? More info on how to link up with her, along with ways to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency, dating, healing from toxic relationships, and gaining confidence. Reflection question: should you bring up cheating if it's only one time? Cheating is a symptom of something in the relationship as well, but the partner that got cheated on should not blame themselves. Setting boundaries and discussing what is and is not cheating with your partner is very important. Tweetables: “Cheating is a symptom of something in the relationship as well.” - Carla “It's really really important to be explicit.” - Sara “Someone is only going to change if they want to. There's nothing you can do to make someone else change.” - Carla “Conflict is never the issue. It's how we handle the conflict that is the issue.” - Sara “My whole career is based on the premise that people can change.” - Sara “Cheating can be about the relationship, but it can also be indicative of the relationship you have with yourself.” - Sara Connect with Us! Sara Kubric: Saving Millennials through Modern Therapy Techniques. I'm honoured to host Sara Kuburic as the guest on our show today. Sara is a Canadian certified counsellor and a trauma informed clinician. She has a person-centred approach that's grounded in existential analysis as well as semantic and experiential techniques. She specializes in areas of trauma & abuse, identity relationships with self & others, life transitions, and anxiety. The Millennial Therapist: Sara's unique and modern approach to healing. When starting out as a young clinician or student in grad school, you're presented with a diverse range of therapeutic modalities. This can tend to be overwhelming when making your selection. Sara decided to pick a modality that resonates with her personality and character. Based on this criterion, Sara involves her clients in open, honest and genuine conversations with her patients, all of which leads to an effective growth and healing journey. Having initially started off with Neuroscience, Sara found herself switching to an existential approach after stumbling across a patient whose treatment involved performing an existential analysis. Sara's modern approach to Psychotherapy In today's society, instant gratification has led to the striving and application of quick solutions and coping mechanisms to deal with our problems. That is why so many therapists also pick modalities that cater for quick results, and end up ignoring the deep-rooted issues that need to be solved. In contrast to this, Sarah preaches for and practices awareness and honesty as an effective therapy strategy. Growth is sometimes characterised by pain and discomfort, and so it's counterproductive when so many modern therapists try to make their clients feel as comfortable as they can throughout the entire therapy session. This only serves to limit their growth. People pleasing. Having grown to be such a big cultural aspect of our society, people pleasing is an attribute that's been happening for ages. Sara describes pleasing people as the act of trying to get the approval of other people, regardless of the sacrifice that you have to make in order to accomplish your goal. As a society, we tend to applaud people for placing other people's needs before their own and criticize the ones that put themselves first. Self-care is now seen as being selfish. Essentially, the things that we yearn to do in order to gain other people's approval are things that we can't always, but partially offer ourselves. Gaslighting. Being aware that you're a victim of gaslighting is an incredibly difficult feat. Gas lighting is a relationship phenomenon characterised by toxic manipulation of the victim. It's so complex to an extent that the victim has a really hard time to connect to themselves and reality. It's psychological abuse, that leads to the victim going through detrimental suffering, and more often than not, isolating themselves from everyone too. Setting healthy boundaries. Unlike the popular belief in so many cultures, setting boundaries with your friends and family, is not an ultimatum or control mechanism. Rather, it's a request to other people to be more empathetic while still protecting our needs, and nurturing our connection with other people. Boundaries are different for everyone and we should feel confident when setting them. Never be afraid to give your honest thoughts and opinions about how other people's actions, behaviours, and opinions impact us. Inner child. The concept defines re-enactments that we do as adults in relation to our childhood experiences. These acts are triggered by needs that were never fulfilled when you were growing up as a kid. Inner child can sometimes manifest in the form of tantrums. So, whilst we try to fulfil these needs in our adult life, we do so without realizing that we're doing so in an unproductive or harmful way. Sometimes there's the beautiful inner child. This is where our intuition, creativity, and playfulness stems from. Thus, as much as the inner child can be harmful, we can learn how to decipher between the productive and unproductive inner child for a happier life. The Shame tagged with seeking therapy Unlike being able to spot a physiological defect within your body such as a broken arm, it's difficult to pinpoint what you lack when it comes to therapy. So, most people end up concluding that they're broken. And this induces a lot of shame. To change this mentality, we can accept our flaws and own the fact that we need help, this way, we flip the conversation from therapy to self-growth and development. Be sure to tune into the show, and grow from insights provided by Sara Kuburic, including how you can use fitness & nutrition as guidelines for a healthy mind, and why humour is one of the best tools to calm a troubled mind.
