Carmen Rossi is a successful serial entrepreneur who has launched over 70 businesses across various industries—hospitality, restaurants, real estate, cannabis, clothing, law, travel, and more. He also owns and operates some of the biggest nightclubs and restaurants in Chicago, along with iconic campus spots like KAMS and Red Lion. His secret? The ability to truly listen. Carmen has an unmatched talent for tuning into what people want and turning those desires into unforgettable experiences. That's his superpower, and it's fueled his extraordinary success. Carmen's entrepreneurial journey began early—in college, where he started a dormitory loft-building company, a painting company that hired fellow students, and a travel agency that sold over 1,000 spring break trips. Unlike the stereotypical innovator creating entirely new ideas, Carmen admits his strength lies in refining existing concepts and mastering their execution. It's this pragmatic approach that has guided him through trial and error, with an open embrace of failure. “Failure is welcomed here,” he says, seeing college as the perfect arena for experimentation and growth. Carmen's story offers not only inspiration but also valuable insight for anyone aspiring to make an impact in their communities. He emphasizes the importance of identifying unmet needs in neighborhoods before launching ventures, creating everything from vibrant sports bars to upscale dining experiences. His hospitality empire includes over 40 businesses, such as Hubbard Inn, Cardozo's Pub, The Joy District, The Dime, and HVAC Pub in Chicago. During this episode, Carmen shares his love for pop culture, his admiration for films like Risky Business and Yes Man, and his belief in amplifying social connections through business. He explores his philosophy of saying “yes” to new opportunities and creating ventures that bring people together in memorable ways. Carmen offers practical advice to young people, promoting the “rule of large numbers.” He encourages taking large-scale action and learning from setbacks. As he puts it, “I'm not going to ask two people out on dates, I'm going to ask 20. And if I get 20 rejections, I know I need to change the pitch.” Right after our conversation with Carmen, we were so inspired by his ideas that one of our own projects took off, going viral within a week. That's the power of Carmen has—he sparks immediate action and creativity in others. This episode is a masterclass in entrepreneurship for anyone looking to understand how to build and run multiple successful businesses. For the Love of Therapy: Are You Happy? Dr. Sara Kuburic Wants Us To Stop Lying To Ourselves and Take Ownership of Our Choices

For The Love With Jen Hatmaker Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2023 46:07

It's time for this week's podcast therapy session and we've got another great therapist in our “office” as part of our For the Love of Therapy series. Dr. Sara Kuburic is an existential psychotherapist, author and the force behind The @Millennial.Therapist account on Instagram. Dr. Kuburic believes that each of us is a free and responsible agent who determines our own development through acts of our will. Though this isn't always a popular view to take, as we often look to outside forces to blame for our unhappiness, Dr. Kuburic wants us to understand that we have this amazing opportunity to engage in life and we can take ownership and responsibility over our choices. In that vein, she asks a very important question: how much of what we deal with in life happens to us, and how much of it did we inflict on ourselves? (that's a fun thing to spend a few hours pondering). But as a therapist, she helps people find tools to address whatever stage of life they're–maybe it is a bad situation and you just can't change it–but as she likes to ask: “what can you change or how can you change your attitude so the situation is less painful for you?” In addition to thinking about our lives existentially, Jen and Dr. Kuburic also discuss the concept of self-loss and how we can deceive ourselves into thinking we're living the life we want, when our bodies are telling us otherwise by devolving into depression, anxiety and panic.    Jen and Dr. Kuburic get honest about:  What it's like when you love the “idea” of who you are more than who you actually are–and how to stop lying to yourself What happens when not making a change in your life actually becomes more painful than changing Realizing that our bodies do have limits–no matter how strong you think you are or how strong you've been—your body is sending up red flags with feelings of anxiousness, fear or panic for seemingly no reason How sometimes our dedication to make something work can be so all consuming–even if that thing isn't the right thing for our lives and hat commitment, which is normally a good quality, can lead us to our weakest moments if we don't face up to the truth   * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I think I got into psychology to try to understand what makes humans tick and try to understand my own human experience.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “We get to engage in life; we can take ownership, we can take responsibility, we can make choices, and I think that that's really how I see human suffering. My question is always, ‘how much of it happened to you? How much of it did you inflict on yourself?'” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “I think if you're stagnant, that's where the loss happens. That's when we overcommit to one version of ourselves. When you're not being stagnant, you are always being fluid–I think you're understanding the assignment, which is constant creation and adaptation of yourself to fit your experiences, your context, and what life is asking of you in that moment.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Stop assuming you know someone well enough to stop paying attention.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “I think having someone that I've known for eight years sit me down and just be like, ‘Hey, are you happy,” was the first time anyone, including myself, asked that question.” - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Someone else made the mess and now you have to clean it up when it wasn't your mess. But, the reason you're cleaning it up is because you deserve not to live in a mess, not because they deserve for you to clean it up. It's for you.”  - Dr. Sara Kuburic “Until we understand what the consequences of our actions or inactions are, it's going to be really hard to take the next steps.”  - Dr. Sara Kuburic   Resources Mentioned in This Episode: It's On Me: Accept Hard Truths, Discover Yourself and Change Your Life by Dr. Sara Kuburic Dr. Sara Kuburic's USA Today Column Guest's Links: Dr. Sara Kuburic's Website Dr. Sara Kuburic's Instagram Dr. Sara Kuburic's Facebook Dr. Sara Kuburic's Twitter Dr. Sara Kuburic's Pinterest  Dr. Sara Kuburic's Substack Connect with Jen! I never really connected the dots on Jesus call for his followers to pray for workers for the harvest and the sending out of the twelve into the harvest. I have always thought of that scripture as connected to foreign missions and the starving kids in Africa that I missed the point of the harvest all around us that Jesus is sending us to. I'm not saying that we shouldn't go to the starving kids in Africa, but not all of us can do that and there are starving kids all around us where ever we are. This is such a powerful message to us who are learning to follow Jesus. The other thing that ties this all together for me is Jesus call to be all in with him in this kingdom work. What in today's chapter is connecting with you?

JB:Today we welcome Paul Ross. Paul is an author, speaker, trainer, Maser Hypnotist, Master Practitioner of Neuro-linguistic Programming and amore!PR:I’m honored to be leading us on this journeyJB:How’d you get into sales?PR:I got into sales because I was a 29 year old virgin who couldn’t get a date. Couldn’t get a date ever!Had zero EQ(emotional intelligence) outside of facts, figures, graphs, charts. Challenging to communicate with people in a way that helps to communicate in sales context To communicate with people that connects with their emotions can be really challenging.Tried psychotherapy, read books, prayed and stumbled into a book about NLP Neuro Linguistic programming10 pages in, stop, and you go WOW, I must learn more!3-4 months to heal up my shame & bad mindset. Then applied the techniques and IT WORKED!First GF age of 29, realized he could teach other guysBecame a dating coach and began teaching students to get huge results, I found a family, here’s a picture of my wife and kids...this stuff is working for SALES!Getting a sale is like a  date - outreach, prospecting, qualify, create rapport, presentational, trial close and handle objectionsDating is harder because there is a lot more PERSONAL RejectionBeing a hypnotist the unconscious/subconscious mind is the seat where decisions are actually madeJB:So much to unpack from that and things like handling PERSONAL objections which is so profound in dating and can feel similar in salesPR:How I learned the power of not taking it personally;Had a student who wanted to take him to a restaurant and watch him go pickup women. Didn’t want to do it, but then he offered $10K in cash. The student goes beyond strike out and crashes and burns. Have you ever seen someone get beat down time and time again so you feel terrible? That was this guy!Head outside waiting for cab (pre-Uber) they were done, but found a nice lady on the street to try one last timeShe got pissed. She decides how she responds, we decide where we come fromPattern interrupt puts his arm out - she is a daughter, she is loved somewhere. Broke her down. In between sobbing, this had nothing to do with you. What made that possible - BROKE HER PATTERN- what was she expecting me to do?Fight backStay Angry (if you’re in rapport)Sneak away Didn’t make it about her or himself/ Switched the meaning of the whole event by interrupting patternRapport can wreck your sale if you do it at the write timeI did the unexpected, she was expecting me to fight back or just apologize and sneak away.  I did the unexpected and got a much different result.  If I can do that in that emotionally loaded situation, I can train anyone to overcome an objection in a much less tense situation.Coming from outside the field of sales. When you’re inside a particular field you have the benefits and advantages of knowing it.  But you also have the myopia of the narrow focus into a specific area. When you appeal to the subconscious mind of your prospect/client, they will do the majority of the work. Subtle Words That Sell: How to Get Your Prospects to Convince Themselves To BuyWhen you do it right, they talk themselves into buying.JB: How do you pattern interrupt and get into the subconscious?PR:Prospects want to get the work out of their way. Have you ever interviewed people?  It’s so mind numbing Destroying Objections- 5 techniquesThe OF Course Method-TO ME.  Of Course you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be in this business you’re consistently committed to everydayTake the objection, and the MEANING of that objection is WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN Have you ever been in a situation where the more options you were presented with it made it more confusing? - Based on a hypnotic principle- Dr. Milton Erickson -revolutionized the world of hypnosis - died in 1980  Love Pattern Interrupts - helps make people susceptible to create a narrow window where you can lead them to a new possibility. Didn’t say WHAT or WHEN- left it vague and unclearWhatever you can get the prospect to imagine for themselves they will think of it as their own idea.  Be vague and make suggestions so the prospect starts to fill in the blanks for themselvesAs I’m leading you in this exploration of subconscious communication today - I’m not sure all the points at which you’ll stop to think WOW Paul has some fascinating things to share. But as that’s taking place I’m so honored to begin this journey of mentorship with me. Assuming they will continue learning from you. JB: What’s a pattern interrupt?PR: Stops their current thinking and allows you to reframe the meaning of their objection in the back of your headAll of this stuff applies to any field - this applies to so many people, LOVES to teach everybodyJB:Where do sellers leverage a pattern interrupt?PR: If the prospect doesn’t want to engage, answer questions. Worked across realtors, mortgage loan officers, Sales Engineers - you are the same guys I taught for years how to meet women and successfully employee your romantic stylings SE matches the software and benefits in front of a group of experts whose job it is to suss out whether it will meet their needs. Lots of time a Tech Hijacker who wants to poke holes in everything. “Before we begin this exploration of this suite of solutions. I want to acknowledge, I welcome questions, as long as you laugh at my jokes that’s absolutely fine.  If you are the type of person who wants to prove me wrong, I’m already promising I know I can be wrong.”Power of INOCULATION - inoculate your audience before they come up with objectionsBefore we dive into there are 3 possible responses(how do I get in front of them):Will sound like what you already knowMajority of it will make some senseSome of this will be totally off the walls and that’s where I want to get you excitedThe potential of bringing you results so far beyond what you’re enjoying today.Slowed down the pace of his speaking to create a more hypnotic responseIf you want to get into the power of subconscious suggestion, slow your voice down It’s in the pause where you find the power.JB: How do you learn to slow your speaking?PR:Why mirror people when I can lead them? Take the content out, change the tempo and the pace (to learn pacing) - Mary had a little lamb…..her fleece was……..white as snow…..Rich Bandler- mentor- take nonsense content and pace your voice so you are less focused on the words and can alter the tone and paceJB: What is NLP and how do you use it?PR: I am using it the whole time.  The suggestions are buried in the words.FIND YOURSELF, DISCOVER YOURSELF, ALLOW YOURSELF -- use these 3 phrases in your sales presentations/negotiations, your sales will explode. Do you ever just find yourself with your head in the refrigerator, hand on the door and you don’t remember what it is you’re looking for? What does it mean to FIND YOURSELF doing something -it happens outside of your conscious awareness/controlAs we’re having this discussion I don’t know at which point you might STOP and FIND YOURSELF MAKING A GREAT DECISIONClarity doesn't have to be powerful you can be vague and be successful in salesEverything I’ve learned came from my mom, blame it on her. JB: How do traditional, common teachings about mindset actually get in the way of your progress?PR:One of the limiting beliefs sales people have is they do OK with the mid-level clients, they just can’t close the big accounts. It’s very difficult to convince someone to do something when they have a million repetitions with themselves saying I can’t, can’t can’tNot a Napoleon Hill fan. More contrarian thinking as many people LOVE Napolean Hill. Who would lean on affirmations (I Close BIG DEALS!) but the subconscious mind wins over the conscious mind. When you go to create change:Difficult to change beliefs about your identity - to change I AM statements - easy to change people’s beliefs of what they can learn/acquireAlways stay in rapport with the unconscious mindWhen someone states a limiting belief take it away from being about them and more so a skill they can learnOpposed to I can I can I can, use….Up Until Now it was my experience that I didn't close the high ticket items→ more empowering statement because it opens the POSSIBILITY that you can succeedEasier to get someone to believe in the possibility they can changeAnd now I claim MY LEARNING OF MY SKILLS TO CLOSE MY BIG TICKET CLIENTSDifference between wanting & claiming?Ownership language; my, mine, etc. Add in some adjectivesI claim these skillsI claim My skillsI claim my AMAZING skills- creates a lot more power Make it about skills + ownership + adjectiveReflexively apply to the listener- take what they just said. Wow that’s a powerful belief you’ve learned to invest inWhat would it be like as you now open up to a mysterious new way of thinking?Being deliberately vague at the right time, adding in suggestions, use trance phrases to help drive the conversation.Watching a strawweight fight, ladies throwing many combinations - one of the best fights - If you just use one of these tools, when you use them in partnership with each other it becomes crazy powerful. In hypnosis we call this the Law of Compound Suggestion. JB:This is where I think we can get so much!PR:I have an ulterior motive, I want people to fall in love with the transformational power of language, structure consciousness, shape decisions and drive behavior.See people fall in love with themselves, close big deals, sales go up by 15-20-30%People on the subconscious level not to just talk to him more, but to fall in love with itThe brain is miraculous, much more beautiful and complicated than a computer.I think there is something magical going on between our earsJB:How do you help people bounce back from failure?PR:Surrender and Embrace practiceAffirmations:I surrender my right to envy,  despair, self punishment and demanding the world provide meAnd embrace my practice of joy, appreciation and ability to learn any skills I needSurrender my right to spite the success of others, embrace my right ot learning from themI am blessed to have my challenges in my life, joyously, courageously, creatively face the challenges in my life and conquerJB:Talk to me about your daily routinesPR:I practice happiness for the success of others! Metta meditation from BuddhismWhen you are grateful for other people’s success it’s the completion/multiplication of your own gratitude for what you haveEnvy multiplies your lack or what you miss out on Envy implies a belief that you can’t do/have somethingPurge myself of subtle self punishmentObvious positions, anger, jealousy we can deal with , the subtle ones have power because we don’t see themIf you have an ego problem like me, have cats because they will show you that you don’t matterJB:Talk to me about meditation practicePR:2500 year old Buddhist practice called Vipassana, essentially mindfulnessFocusSensory clarity- acutely aware of everything going onEquanimity - non interference with the flow of the experienceSelf is not a thing, an ever arising set of experiences.  It can be very liberating especially when suffering. So much pain and grief upon the passing of his mother, allow the grief to grip my body, feel it through every part of my body...after 30 minutes broke up into waves of energy.  Did I suffer? NO. Was in grief but not suffering. Went from grieving incapacitated to griveing in my lifeAs humans we aren’t taught to handle pain well. When we can walk side by side with pain and uncertainty. Biggest problems for people not fear of failure but the uncertainty. Unwillingness to move forward without certainty. JB:The power of meditation, mindset and subconscious is so powerful because sales is a life skill about engaging with people, engaging with yourself and building awareness that can take you forward. What does success mean to you?PR: The freedom to do what I love to do, teaching, and doing it in a way where I can have financial reward to choose to spend my money on experiences not things. It gives me the opportunity to play with the kind of people I want to play with. Finally for me, success is impact!Mom, I didn’t have children for myself, I had them for the world! www.SpeakerPaulRoss.comwww.PaulRossBook.com Paul@SpeakerPaulRoss.comI love hate mail! TRIUMPH OVER ADVERISTY STORY I interview Brayden Abbott on losing both of his parents in the same year (one to cancer and one to mental health), his journey on coming out gay, being bullied in school and feeling as if he had hit rock bottom with life! This story is very RELATABLE as we have all been there. At one point in our lives we have all been impacted by cancer, death, mental health, losing our jobs, feeling like a failure, bullying, sexuality and moving interstate etc... Brayden decided after losing everything he loved that he would pack up his stuff and move interstate for a fresh start to focus on himself! Too many of us don't take this first big move and feel that it is "selfish" to focus on ourselves; when in fact this is HEALTHY for us to focus on ourselves and get our minds right for our loved ones. This is when Brayden started his "self discovery journey" trying to find out who he was and what he wanted in life! This has now led him down a path in the Navy, living in Canberra and finally finding the love he has longed for. Come with me on this journey and let's get EMPOWERED! A few weeks ago I shared with you how freewriting freed me. The book Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg, played a big part in that during my college years, introducing me to the idea of timed writing as a means to write and discover. Even though I wasn't all that interested in Goldberg's frequent references to Zen Buddhism, I liked her basic approach: "When I teach a class,” she says, “I want the students to be 'writing down the bones,' the essential, awake speech of their minds."1 When I tuned into to my own inner voice and wrote down that "awake speech" of my mind, I began to know myself better. And the better I knew myself, the better and more interesting my writing became. But when I look back, I realize the practice of self-reflection started even earlier, in high school. Write to Discover One afternoon when I was about 14 years old, I was glancing through books on writing at my local library and noticed a title: Write to Discover Yourself, by Ruth Vaughn. I looked both ways and plucked it from the shelf, running my fingers over the green cover with a fuchsia Gerbera daisy poking out of a pencil cup. It seemed a little wacky, but . . . Write. Discover. Writers have a lot to discover, but a way to write true and fresh no matter the project is to start by discovering oneself. I knew that instinctively, even then, and felt affirmed by this title. I desperately wanted to understand myself, to unearth who I was meant to become. And, I wanted to write. I took the book home and retreated to my room where I followed instructions to “portrait” the important people in my life, exploring memories, capturing life. I sat on the hardwood floor of my bedroom and composed a word-portrait of my father, struggling to express the way his resonant voice, rising from deep within his barrel chest, could build and fill—even shake—the house. Or was it just me, shaking? Page after page, the author encouraged me to continue being specific, to use concrete details and metaphor. I poured out stories from my little world. Digging into yourself requires a depth of honesty that is painful, the author said, but imperative. She quoted a professor who said a writer “is the person with his skin off.” First Thoughts That's how I began to decipher my life. On the pages of a journal, I wrote with my skin off—bare, vulnerable. I tapped into the "awake speech" of my mind, burning through to what Goldberg calls "first thoughts" in order to write down the bones, the hard truths, the core of what and who I had been and was becoming.2 The idea of first thoughts made so much sense to me, because I wanted to express my truest self but I knew I was mostly living in layers of thought, edited thoughts. Goldberg explains: "First thoughts have tremendous energy. It is the way the mind first flashes on something. The internal censor usually squelches them, so we live in the realm of second and third thoughts, thoughts on thought, twice and three times removed from the direct connection of the first fresh flash."3 So I used her idea of freewriting when I was in college—timed writing without stopping—hoping to once more get to the bones of thought, experience, memory, feeling; to gain clarity on faded and forgotten memories. As I practiced this private outpouring of words and deeply personal reflections—first with the help of that stumbled-upon writing book and later with guidance from author Natalie Goldberg—I peeled back layers to stare at my heart and soul. I began, through practice—through pain—the lifelong process of finding myself. Methods for Using Writing to Discover Yourself Since then I've found other resources that encourage a similar practice, like Proprioceptive Writing, Expressive Writing, and Julia Cameron's Morning Pages. I encourage you to look into these various methods and learn more. Whatever approach you try, seek to know yourself better and find insight and freedom by tapping into memory,

She quoted a professor who said a writer “is the person with his skin off.” First Thoughts oThat's how I began to decipher my life.

QOD-097: Are you following your personal calling? Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey Click Below to Listen to Today's Show     I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others as a service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you. ~~ Oprah Winfrey A personal calling. . . What is yours? Oprah recognized this truth early on and has provided her calling as a service to others and it has enhanced many lives, including her own. An AHA Moment I've said before that I recently experienced an "Aha Moment" where I felt I wasn't doing what I loved or following "My Calling".  Feeling totally depressed, lost and wondering why I was doing what I was doing, I started thinking about what made me happy in all of my "careers".  What did I love to do. What was my calling? I had picked up a copy of Jeff Goins' book, The Art of Work. Jeff discusses finding your calling in it. Pick it up and read it. There's a link at the bottom of the show notes page on Goal Getting Podcast.com / qod97. Yes, it's an affiliate link and I will earn a couple dollars if you order it. It's part of that providing a service piece Oprah talks about in her quote. [amazon template=image&chan=goalgettingpodcast&asin=0718022076] I Am Happy When It hit me that I was most happy when: I was teaching martial arts classes I was developing training and training customers on software. I was attending networking events. I was helping local businesses grow their business. I was building my social media presence. I was creating a podcast ( I started my first podcast in 2004 ) I was working at growing communities that I was involved in. I was mentoring team members and people that want to better themselves. I could go on, but I hope you see the pattern developing. I had to sit down and think and start developing my life to do what I loved and provide a service. Once I realized my calling and set the goal to change careers to do what I love, things started to fall into place. I started my podcast to share the Goal Achievement Success System I put together and teach people how to Get The Goals They Set. I've started working on creating an online course for the same program. I mentioned in earlier episodes that I recently changed careers to Internal Community Manager for my company. I now get to do everything that I love, teach, mentor, do social media, blog, all rolled into one position. I am even discussing working with our company to incorporate internal podcasts. What's Your Personal Calling The truth is, when I graduated high school I wanted to be a Teacher.  I didn't know how to do that. I was told I couldn't afford to go to college by my family. I was told I wasn't college material. I think the most important thing I thought was Teachers don't make too much money. I wanted a career making money. The other day I was editing a blog from one of our executives. He was sharing his Best Advice I've Ever Received and it was, "Don't do it for the money." I should have learned that earlier in life.  I can do what I want and still make the money. Especially Today! . . . the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others as a service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you. Great advice from Oprah! What is your Personal Calling? Sit down and think about about in. Write down the times when you have been the most happy, the most fulfilled, what were you doing at that time? If you have a hard time figuring it out, let me know. Email me at Tony@GoalGettingPodcast.com and we can chat. I'm sorry I've taken this episode longer than I usually do, but I think it's important to understand what Oprah said in the quote and that you understand how important it is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others as a service, then WORK HARD and also allow the energy or the universe lead you. It won't do it for you, but it will lead you and provide opportunities. Go Out and Discover Yourself! Go Out Today and be a Service to Others. The Three Faces of Spirit: Where is Awareness Locating Itself?

Buddhist Geeks

Where does awareness tend to locate itself? And how is this important in our experience and understanding of the Buddhist path of awakening? This week Diane Musho Hamilton—Zen sensei and Big Mind lineage holder—joins us again to discuss the importance of what Ken Wilber calls the three faces of spirit. Using this powerful notion as a lens we explore questions about how and why lineage is passed down, the way that Buddhism adapts to new cultures and why it is particularly vulnerable to being destroyed, how cultural development impacts the tradition, issues surrounding the master-disciple relationship, and finally whether or not one can regulate the erotic impulse.
