Is it a tradition, or is it a fact of life at the Indianapolis 500? Every year when you show up for Race Day, pit lane is lined with stencils signifying each driver's pit box. On this episode of Behind the Bricks, Doug Boles investigates the origins of the stencil work and shows you how we bring this to life each and every May and why it's important for IMS to continue seemingly small traditions like this.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What are the lessons to be learned from the recent attack of a murderous lunatic on a Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee? Professor Paul feels duty bound to address this situation and point out facts that others have ignored. During our SOTG Homeroom from CrossBreed Holsters, we have yet one more example of the need to be dangerous on demand. Yet another robbery was thwarted in Houston, TX by an armed citizen. Do you remember the Sexy Can Contest? We discussed that and more during our Duracoat Finished Firearms segment. Also, Brownells not only sells guns, they have put many of them on sale. Thanks for being a part of SOTG! We hope you find value in the message we share. If you've got any questions, here are some options to contact us: Send an Email Send a Text Call Us Enjoy the show! The DOJ has yet to acknowledge the tragedy even happened, despite Attorney General Merrick Garland previously issuing same-day statements in response to mass shootings. After a shooter murdered 21 people in a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school last May, Garland rightly slammed the “act of unspeakable violence.” “The Justice Department is committed to providing our full support to our law enforcement partners on the ground in Texas and to the Uvalde community,” Garland promised. After a gunman killed 10 people at a Buffalo, New York grocery store the same month, the DOJ issued a similar day-of statement, adding that “The Justice Department is investigating this matter as a hate crime and an act of racially-motivated violent extremism,” due to racist sentiments the shooter had posted on social media. (Click Here for Full Article) From thehill.com/homenews: The House Judiciary Committee postponed a scheduled Tuesday markup on a resolution to nullify a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) pistol brace rule following the mass shooting at a Nashville, Tennessee, school on Monday. “Democrats were going to turn this tragic event into a political thing,” Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told The Hill on Monday evening. Punchbowl News first reported that the hearing would be postponed. Police said a 28-year-old woman killed three nine-year-olds and three adult staff members at Covenant School, a private Christian school in Nashville, on Monday. Authorities said the shooter had assault-style weapons and a handgun. (Click Here for Full Article)

Mil gracias!!! Annie Sloan had a dreamy, independent young life, which continued into her business career, since without a dream and an independent attitude, Annie's world-renowned Chalk Paint may never had been made. Annie was 41 years old when she invented and manufactured Chalk Paint, while also painting for clients and writing books while her three sons were at school or in bed. What shines out most in this episode of the podcast, however, is Annie's absolute belief that everyone is creative, and how much joy she gets from helping people to learn that for themselves. Annie has always had the desire to share what she knows about painting and colour, which is why she choose to write books, to teach decorative techniques that anyone can try using paints, papers, stencils, waxes and more. Her books have been hugely successful and helpful to so many aspiring and experienced painters – and I personally enjoyed working with Annie as her editor for many of those titles, even allowing her to paint my bathroom! That desire continues to this day, and Annie teaches her techniques to stockists of Chalk Paint around the world, so they too can help others get creative, as well as filming videos and courses and hosting painting retreats. So how did Annie go from dreamy wanderer, fine-art student, and band member to colour expert, author and paint entrepreneur?Annie Sloan at creativityfound.co.ukCreativityFound.co.ukInstagram: @creativityfoundpodcastFacebook: @creativityfoundpodcastPinterest: @creativityfoundTwitter: @creativityfounClubhouse: @clairewaitebrown and Creativity Found Connect clubMusic: Day Trips by Ketsa Undercover / Ketsa Creative Commons License Free Music Archive - Ketsa - Day TripsArtworks: Emily Portnoi emilyportnoi.co.ukSupport the showVisit creativityfound.co.uk/gifting for seasonal arts and crafts activities and creative experience gift ideas.
Rotation measure structure functions with higher-order stencils as a probe of small-scale magnetic fluctuations and its application to the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds by Amit Seta et al. on Sunday 16 October Magnetic fields and turbulence are important components of the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies. It is challenging to measure the properties of the small-scale ISM magnetic fields (magnetic fields at scales smaller than the turbulence driving scale). Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate how the second-order rotation measure (RM, which depends on thermal electron density, $n_{rm e}$, and magnetic field, $b$) structure function can probe the properties of small-scale $b$. We then apply our results to observations of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC). First, using Gaussian random $b$, we show that the characteristic scale where the RM structure function flattens is approximately equal to the correlation length of $b$. We also show that computing the RM structure function with a higher-order stencil (more than the commonly-used two-point stencil) is necessary to accurately estimate the slope of the structure function. Then, using Gaussian random $b$ and lognormal $n_{rm e}$ with known power spectra, we derive an empirical relationship between the slope of the power spectrum of $b$, $n_{rm e}$, and RM. We apply these results to the SMC and LMC and estimate the following properties of small-scale $b$: correlation length ($160~pm 21~{rm pc}$ for the SMC and $87~pm~17~{rm pc}$ for the LMC), strength ($14~pm 2~mu{rm G}$ for the SMC and $15~pm 3~mu{rm G}$ for the LMC), and slope of the magnetic power spectrum ($-1.3~pm~0.4$ for the SMC and $-1.6~pm~0.1$ for the LMC). We also find that $n_{rm e}$ is practically constant over the estimated $b$ correlation scales. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2206.13798v2

The first thing you need to know about Oslo-based artist Martin Whatson is that he is one of the nicest people in all of street art. We have known him for years on the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, traveled throughout Norway with him, been at numerous festivals and Basel years and have never sat down for a proper interview. Until, of course, Nuart Aberdeen and a chance to reconnect with old friends and get a sense of where everyone has been at over the course of a few years of dormant travel. And Martin has been busy. Starting as a graffiti artist and stencil artist on the streets of Oslo, Whatson has always had a keen sense of a finding the right place for his artwork. His prints are some of the most popular releases in the game, and his murals, especially the one in Aberdeen this year, take both a historic and contemporary look at the city he is in and finds a way to create an eye-popping work to leave behind. After a long night out, where all 3 of us were feeling it, we sat down with Whatson to discuss his early years in Norway, how he has been able to create a space for himself with prints and fine art, and how the pandemic allowed him time with family and in the studio. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 091 was recorded on June 10, 2022 in Aberdeen, Scotland for the Nuart Festival.

I know it’s been a while between episodes, but Covid and lockdown have kept me extra busy with the shop. I’m excited to be back … thanks for tuning in! Today, let’s talk about one of the oldest, most used, versatile and affordable pieces of kit that you can have in your crafting stash - stencils. Stencils are, essentially, a tool that helps you create a design quickly and easily by masking off the areas where you don’t want to apply your ink, paint or medium. There are lots of different sizes, shapes and types of stencils. You can buy them or make them, and there are a few different materials that are commonly used. These days, commercial crafting stencils are a thin flexible plastic, but you can make your own using specialty stencil plastic, acetate, a fused laminator pouch, cardboard or paper. You can cut them by hand or use a die-cutting machine using your dies, or a more sophisticated electronic cutting machine like the Scan N Cut, where you could scan any print or hand-drawn image then cut. Alternatively you could use a machine like the Silhouette or Cricut using an SVG file (and I will link to my favourite SVG file resource in the show notes). When creating your own stencil the most important thing to remember is that the openings of the design need to be bridged. There can’t be any loose pieces … the whole thing needs to be joined as one piece. Hackaday editors Mike Szczys and Elliot Williams sort through the hardware hacking gems of the week. This month, we take a change in direction from previous episodes in reviewing the 2010 documentary film 'Exit Through The Gift Shop', which chronicles the misadventures of UK street-artist 'Banksy'. Both serious and satirical, the film follows eccentric cameraman Thierry Guetta as he haphazardly makes inroads into the underground street-art scene, eventually taking on the role of Banksy's Documentarian and Personal Assistant. After a high-profile U.S exhibition brings him overnight fame and fortune, Banksy instructs Thierry to start compiling his documentary footage so that the real story behind the media sensation can be told; though he soon learns that Thierry posesses neither creativity nor competence as a filmmaker. As Banksy takes over the editing himself, he instructs Thierry to go forth and pursue his own artistic visions on the street, only to find that Thierry has bigger plans in mind, and has hired a large staff of artists to start mass-producing his plagiarised pop-art concepts. After conducting a savvy and elaborate public relations campaign as ‘Mr Brainwash’, Thierry opens his new gallery to public applause and highly lucrative profits, much to the chagrin of Banksy and his colleagues. We discuss the synergistic relationship between the world of modern art and public relations, where the currency of an artist is determined by publicity and networking, and the content of the artwork is less important than its perceived social context. The film appears to be critiquing this paradigm in ‘mockumentary’ style, while still advocating the exploitation of these principals - begging the question as to what sentiment is actually being communicated? We also touch on the history of establishment influences in countercultural art movements, exploring questions of artistic integrity versus commercial opportunity; ultimately interpreting the entire film itself as a cynical exercise in guerrilla marketing. By both exposing and exploiting the frivolous nature of the art world, the film employs a masterful blend of satire, controversy and contradiction to create mystique around the artist. Is Banksy really a single individual, or simply the brand name used by an underground clique of artists and spin doctors? Was Thierry Guetta a lucky entrepreneur, or was he the cynical face of an elaborate and lucrative publicity stunt? Topics discussed include: Banksy, Shepherd Fairey, Obey, Andre the Giant, Art, PR, Public Relations, Thierry Guetta, Mr Brainwash, Street Art, Pop-Art, Andy Warhol, Mockumentary, Hoax, Space Invader, Disneyland, LA, Cynicism, Publicity, Gallery, Exhibition, CIA, Congress for Cultural Freedom, Cold War, International Operations Division, George Soros, Open Society Institute, Tides Foundation, Adbusters, Occupy, Saatchi, Tate, Modern Art, Shock Value, Context, Rockefeller, Brangelina, Counterculture, Celebrity, Barely Legal, Prank, Occult, Alchemical, Secret Society, Initiation, Neophyte, Ritual, Drama, Promotion, Marketing, Publicity Stunt, Funding, Grants, Leftist Critiques, Anti-Establishment, Capitalism, Exploitation, Satire, Punk, Stencils, Installations, Staff, Crew, Guerrilla Marketing, Perception, Meaning, Hidden Clues, Themes, Memes, Contradictions, Profits, Commercialisation, London, Bristol, Logistics, Jackson Pollock, Post-Modernism, Rip-Offs, Production, Branding, Mystery, Subculture, Social Statements, Secrecy, Resources, Compromise, Group Projects.

This Educator Guide accompanies "Making Stencils with Mike Shine" and "In the Studio with Mike Shine" produced by KQED. Mike Shine's interests range from surfing to carnivals, and his dynamic approach to art making manifests as immersive installations, which he's created throughout the Bay Area at local museums, galleries, and even at his home in Bolinas, "The Shine Shack." His artwork is inspired by carnival aesthetics and his own narrative about Dr. Flotsam, a clown character who represents the darker aspects of life, and was inspired by the legend of Faust and the fictional demon, Mephistopheles. Shine has recently been working on large-scale, multi-layered stencils to create murals in the Tenderloin. We paid a visit to the Shine Shack and asked him to give us a primer on stencil-making, and tell us more about his style, and his history of working with stencils, which are one of the most accessible tools for creating a message and spreading it (or spray painting it) widely. When introducing stenciling to students, it's important to initiate a discussion about graffiti, vandalism, and private property. Mike Shine's murals in the Tenderloin neighborhood and in Clarion Alley are commissioned; the owners of the buildings gave permission for him to paint on their walls. While stencils are an important tool for street artists, students need to understand the legality of various forms of street art, and should be reminded to never paint on buildings or in the streets without permission. As with any art form, it is also important to take proper precautions when using materials such as spray paint.
