Have you ever found yourself immediately reaching for a coping behavior like scrolling or stress eating, without even realizing what emotion triggered it? That could be a sign of emotional repression—a survival mechanism that protects you, but at a huge cost to your health and boundaries. In part one of this essential two-part series on emotional health and post-traumatic growth, co-hosts Elisabeth Kristof (founder of BrainBased.com) and Jennifer Wallace (Neurosomatic Psychedelic Preparation and Integration Guide) dive into the powerful energy of anger. They are joined by their friend and lead educator, Matt Bush, an international applied neurology expert and founder of Next Level Neuro. This conversation explores how a lifetime of suppressed anger, tied to the fight response and complex trauma, creates a toxic internal environment, linking chronic stress to diagnoses like Stage 3 cancer. You will learn the crucial difference between conscious suppression and unconscious repression, how this shifts your entire neurological perception of the world, and what safe, structured steps you can take to begin discharging this vital energy from your body. This episode is for anyone who struggles with quick reactivity, feeling disconnected from what they feel, or understanding the deep mind-body connection of stored emotion. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction: anger, fight response, and health diagnosis. 01:37 Emotional expression & its vitality for nervous system health and reducing stress. 07:06 Perceived vs. real threat and the roots of repression in childhood. 16:45 Defining suppression versus repression as protective mechanisms. 23:42 The neurological and physiological consequences of repression. 35:34 Anger as a natural response to a boundary violation and safe release practices. 42:47 The link between repressed anger, boundaries, and immune system dysfunction. 48:28 Rewiring for a new homeostasis and the role of epigenetics. Key Takeaways: Emotional repression—the unconscious blocking of emotions—is a trauma-informed survival strategy that traps the nervous system in a constant state of threat response, leading to the buildup of toxic stress hormones. Repression is often tied to complex post-traumatic stress, where a child's nervous system was unable to process big emotions and lacked co-regulation from caregivers, learning that emotional expression was unsafe or threatening. When repressed, anger (the natural response to a boundary violation) becomes internalized, resulting in behaviors like overworking, people-pleasing, and, ultimately, immune system dysregulation (e.g., autoimmune conditions). Chronic repression can alter your entire perception of the world, making everyday situations feel threatening (non-cognitive), and driving unconscious avoidance or numbing behaviors (e.g., binging, workaholism, mindless scrolling). Healing involves creating a safe and structured environment (alone or with a trusted person/coach) to gradually access and discharge emotional energy, using neurosomatic intelligence tools to repattern the nervous system. Have you ever felt the tug of curiosity towards an approach to mental health that strays from the conventional path? Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Valerie Chavez MD and Ryan Hunter to share their insights on functional medicine's transformative role in mental health care, especially for those touched by congenital heart defects. Together, we unpack the personalized care that functional medicine offers, emphasizing the power of lifestyle changes and stress reduction to unleash the body's remarkable healing abilities. Our conversation reveals how addressing the unique underlying causes of health issues leads to profound improvements in emotional and physical well-being.A brush with the serene world of aromatherapy during our discussion spotlights the soothing properties of essential oils, proving invaluable within the high-tension walls of an ICU. We recall how the scent of chamomile provided a tranquil harbor for anxious parents navigating the stormy seas of a child's hospital stay. Through anecdotes and expert advice, we navigate the practicalities of integrating these calming fragrances into stressful environments, while also honoring the deeply rooted emotional connections our sense of smell can evoke. It's a sensory journey that underscores the link between our olfactory experiences and our mental landscape. As our heartfelt dialogue draws to a close, we explore the interplay between spirituality and mental health. Discover how HeartMath's biofeedback tools bring peace and coherence to both adults and children and delve into the ancient wisdom of the Four Agreements, discussing its potential to shape our mental health practices. We also confront the theme of forgiveness, its role in our lives, and the catharsis of releasing resentment. As I bid you farewell until our next conversation, I invite you to continue exploring these topics on the CHC Podcast – Congenital Heart Conversations, where we unite, inspire, and empower the Congenital Heart Disease community through stories and support.Websites You May Find Helpful:Valerie Chavez' website: https://gutmend.com/Ryan Hunter's website: https://functionalcoachingtx.com/HeartMath website: https://www.heartmath.com/Book Mentioned in the Episode which may interest you:The Four Agreements by Don Miguel RuizIt Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark WolynnThe Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel A. van der KolkWhen the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress Disease Connection by Gabor Maté, M.D. Link to the first functional medicine episode: Exploring Functional Medicine: Harnessing the Power of Essential Oils and Holistic Health Approaches: https://www.buzzsprout.com/62761/13711353Support the showAnna's Buzzsprout Affiliate LinkBaby Blue Sound CollectiveSocial Media Pages:Apple PodcastsFacebookInstagramMeWeTwitterYouTubeWebsite

Immunity Challenges Arise From Negativity And Past TraumaElicia Miller - Immunity & negativity connect in destructive ways. In our culture and most families, we often don't receive the support to process many of our emotions, and so we continue to repress them by distracting and numbing ourselves and through controlling and addictive behaviors. In this Episode, we connect the reality of trauma, negativity, chronic illness and immunity to support a comprehensive healing process. Unprocessed Emotions Also Create Physical/Medical ProblemsElicia tells us how she came to understand that unprocessed emotions cause chronic emotional and physical symptoms, as well as relationship problems. Elicia helps her clients understand their symptoms and triggers as a gift, a lesson for personal development. Her mission is to value all of their emotions as a necessary part of their authentic selves. Healing With IntentionElicia's journey of healing her underlying medical issues with https://www.corebrainjournal.com/2017/03/097-biofilm-candida-brain-fog-fresco/ (systemic Candida) gave her the experience to guide hundreds to freedom from digestive problems and chronic fatigue. With that advanced biomedical understanding, she next found the connections between anxiety, depression, autoimmune disease, eating disorders, codependency, addictions, poor body image, and perfectionism. Both mind and body crash hard against that solid wall of denial and limited thinking. In this CBJ Episode, she also discusses how healing the emotional causes can resolve those multiple states of arrested development. Today it’s about what it means to be a healer in the true sense of the word. My guest, Marriane Hennigar was drawn to helping people heal from the time she was a young girl. Now, with some experience and education she’s created her own program to assist in the healing process. Since childhood Marianne’s been fascinated by how people work. She uses psychoeducation to connect the dots between the psychological and emotional experiences which expresses themselves in the body. Marianne’s currently engaged in masters level classes in psychology with the aim to finish her degree in the next year. Additionally, she’s seeking certification in Somatic Experiencing and Brainspotting, both body-based modalities which support the client harnessing their own internal wisdom through focus to discover healing. *In This Episode* * Marianne's website ( https://www.insighthealingministries.com/ ) * When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress-Disease Connection ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470923350/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?creative=9325&creativeASIN=0470923350&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=3f2e7aa73318d59b4625a3f8e5afdf51&tag=wescoatrapro-20 ) , Gabor Mate Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
