Dr. David Clarke, president of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association, details the link between stress and chronic pain and the scope of brain-generated symptoms. Clarke says many patients have symptoms not explained by disease or injury, estimating about 20% of U.S. adults (about 50 million) live with chronic pain, with costs estimated at $650 billion, and notes clinicians are often not trained to evaluate psychosocial stressors. He describes clues that pain is brain-generated (e.g., multiple long-lasting or shifting symptoms, lack of objective nerve damage) and a broad symptom spectrum from migraines and IBS to pelvic pain and rashes. Clarke discusses adverse childhood experiences, triggers, personality traits, and repressed emotions, cites randomized trials showing “pain relief psychology” can reduce pain and change MRI findings, and shares resources including a clinician directory, self-assessment quiz, and the Curable app.

Grief is rarely simple. When my dad passed, I expected sadness. What I didn't expect was the wave of guilt, regret, and even moments of anger that surfaced. I found myself replaying memories and quietly asking questions many daughters ask after losing a parent: Did I visit enough? Did I help enough? Should I have done more? For many women—and especially for pilot wives who are used to managing life while our partners are away—we carry a lot of responsibility. Sometimes we carry even more emotional weight than we realize. In this episode of the Pilot Wife Podcast, I share some of my own reflections while processing grief after my dad's passing, including the hidden emotions that can surface when someone we love is gone. We also talk about: ✈️ Why grief often includes guilt, regret, and anger ✈️ The “should have done more” trap many daughters fall into ✈️ How pilot wives quietly carry emotional labor and responsibility ✈️ Why we sometimes repress emotions to stay strong ✈️ What actually helps someone who is grieving (and what doesn't) If you've ever found yourself navigating the emotional turbulence that comes with loss, family dynamics, or simply trying to hold everything together, this conversation is for you. Sometimes the most healing thing we can do is simply tell the truth about what we're feeling. Anita Moorjani shouldn't be alive today. On 2006, doctors told her family she had only hours left to live. Her body was riddled with end-stage cancer. She slipped into a coma and was left for dead. But Anita woke up. During the 30 hours her body was shutting down, she experienced a profound near-death experience that revealed a truth she says changed everything. What followed was a miraculous recovery that challenged everything she once believed about illness, healing, and what it means to truly live. In this episode of the Align Podcast, Anita Moorjani shares her near-death experience and the profound lessons that transformed her life. She explains how fear suppresses the immune system, how repressed emotions can manifest as disease, and why “dying before you die” is the only thing that can give you true freedom. At age 42, I found a lump in my shoulder and was diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system, better known as lymphoma. After suffering for four years with cancer and then having a near-death experience (NDE), one of the biggest lessons I learned was that if I had known how to love myself, I probably never would have gotten sick. I discovered that it's everything that is NOT you—the beliefs that have kept you in bondage, and the fear (conscious or not) that dictated your choices, especially the fear of death—that keeps you from living a full-on, authentic, soulful life. It's about returning to your true essence so that you can see how powerful and magnificent you are. It's about chipping away at what is not you. It's about undoing, not doing. I learned that my only purpose in life is to be a full expression of myself. To love myself to the core of my being. And to share my heart and soul with the world without fear. But you don't have to die to come to these realizations. That's why I share my message—to guide others to access this transformational wisdom. =============== ANITA MOORJANI ===============

Have you ever found yourself immediately reaching for a coping behavior like scrolling or stress eating, without even realizing what emotion triggered it? That could be a sign of emotional repression—a survival mechanism that protects you, but at a huge cost to your health and boundaries. In part one of this essential two-part series on emotional health and post-traumatic growth, co-hosts Elisabeth Kristof (founder of BrainBased.com) and Jennifer Wallace (Neurosomatic Psychedelic Preparation and Integration Guide) dive into the powerful energy of anger. They are joined by their friend and lead educator, Matt Bush, an international applied neurology expert and founder of Next Level Neuro. This conversation explores how a lifetime of suppressed anger, tied to the fight response and complex trauma, creates a toxic internal environment, linking chronic stress to diagnoses like Stage 3 cancer. You will learn the crucial difference between conscious suppression and unconscious repression, how this shifts your entire neurological perception of the world, and what safe, structured steps you can take to begin discharging this vital energy from your body. This episode is for anyone who struggles with quick reactivity, feeling disconnected from what they feel, or understanding the deep mind-body connection of stored emotion. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction: anger, fight response, and health diagnosis. 01:37 Emotional expression & its vitality for nervous system health and reducing stress. 07:06 Perceived vs. real threat and the roots of repression in childhood. 16:45 Defining suppression versus repression as protective mechanisms. 23:42 The neurological and physiological consequences of repression. 35:34 Anger as a natural response to a boundary violation and safe release practices. 42:47 The link between repressed anger, boundaries, and immune system dysfunction. 48:28 Rewiring for a new homeostasis and the role of epigenetics. Key Takeaways: Emotional repression—the unconscious blocking of emotions—is a trauma-informed survival strategy that traps the nervous system in a constant state of threat response, leading to the buildup of toxic stress hormones. Repression is often tied to complex post-traumatic stress, where a child's nervous system was unable to process big emotions and lacked co-regulation from caregivers, learning that emotional expression was unsafe or threatening. When repressed, anger (the natural response to a boundary violation) becomes internalized, resulting in behaviors like overworking, people-pleasing, and, ultimately, immune system dysregulation (e.g., autoimmune conditions). Chronic repression can alter your entire perception of the world, making everyday situations feel threatening (non-cognitive), and driving unconscious avoidance or numbing behaviors (e.g., binging, workaholism, mindless scrolling). Healing involves creating a safe and structured environment (alone or with a trusted person/coach) to gradually access and discharge emotional energy, using neurosomatic intelligence tools to repattern the nervous system. You can't outperform your energetic budget—when you're depleted, you fall back on old habits, not rise to your goals. Small energy leaks (like skipping warmups or doom scrolling) compound into massive performance drops over time. Large emotional leaks stem from unresolved trauma, guilt, grief, or shame that often go unnoticed but massively impact performance. Most golfers don't lack information—they lack energy and emotional regulation to follow through. Behavior change and habit formation require a large upfront energy investment—impossible when you're already drained. Protecting your energy isn't optional—it's the foundation for becoming the golfer and person you're capable of being. Key Quotes: “Emotion is energy in motion. And if you don't process it, it doesn't disappear—it just quietly drains you.” “You don't have a mindset problem. You have an energy problem.” “When you're running on empty, you don't rise to the occasion—you fall back to your habits.” “Lack of intentionality and unresolved emotion are two of the biggest fuel leaks in your game and your life.” “The version of you that plays to your potential needs energy to come online. Protect your energy like your life depends on it.” Time Stamps: 00:00: The Energy Leak Analogy 05:02: Understanding Emotional Energy 10:05: The Impact of Repressed Emotions 14:49: Identifying Energy Leaks 20:00: Strategies for Energy Management 25:03: The Importance of Intentionality 30:05: Conclusion and Call to Action

Well, you're in luck cause in Part 1, Maria is joined by Nicole Sachs, LCSW, psychotherapist, mindbody expert, and author of the upcoming book Mind Your Body! Nicole's here to break down why so many of us are stuck in chronic fight-or-flight mode, and how that stress can actually lead to physical symptoms like fatigue, back pain, migraines, anxiety, and even long COVID. She shares the powerful concept of the emotional reservoir—how our repressed feelings (yes, even the ones we don't know we're holding on to) can overflow and start showing up in the body. Nicole also dives into the real science behind why your body might be using symptoms to protect you… and what you can do about it. If you've ever thought “everything in my life seems fine, but I still feel off”, tune in and get ready to feel seen, understood, and empowered to heal! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS:  Chronic pain isn't random, it's a protective response. Your nervous system may use symptoms like migraines, fatigue, or illness as a way to avoid deeper emotional threats. Your “emotional reservoir” could be overflowing. Suppressed emotions from your past may be fueling present-day anxiety, illness, or burnout—without you even realizing it. Self-compassion is essential. Learning to speak to yourself with kindness is one of the most transformative healing tools available. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website:https://www.healsquad.com/ Heal Squad x Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HealSquad/membership Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off Delete Me: https://bit.ly/43rkHwi   code: SQUAD EPISODE RESOURCES:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicolesachslcsw/  Website: https://www.yourbreakawake.com/  Mind Your Body Book: https://www.yourbreakawake.com/book  Nicole on Heal Squad: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/724-emotions-cause-physical-discomfort-w-nicole-sachs/id1320060107?i=1000626680062  ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. Learning to work with this energy rather than suppress it leads to better performance and overall well-being. Unprocessed Emotions Drain Energy: When emotions aren't acknowledged or expressed, they create internal energy blocks that weigh you down and can even manifest as physical pain. Your Emotional State Affects Your Golf Game: Suppressed frustration, anger, or anxiety doesn't just disappear—it shows up in your swing, decision-making, and overall performance on the course. Energy is Neither Good nor Bad—It's How You React That Matters: Emotions themselves are neutral. Your response to them determines whether they fuel your success or hold you back. Awareness is the First Step Toward Mastery: Developing an emotional vocabulary, recognizing how emotions feel in your body, and understanding your triggers help you gain control over your energy. Slowing Down is the Shortcut to Emotional Mastery: Practicing silence, reflection, and intentional awareness allows you to regulate emotions, making you more resilient and present under pressure. Mastering Emotional Energy Leads to Peak Performance: When you control your energy, you control your mind. And when you control your mind, you control your ability to execute in golf, business, and life. Key Quotes: “Emotions are simply energy in motion. The way you manage that energy determines your success.” “If you feel stuck in your game, in your progress, or in life, chances are you're emotionally constipated.” “Your thoughts begin it, your emotions amplify it, and your actions create momentum. Your results are simply an expression of that emotional energy.” “Unprocessed emotions don't just disappear. They show up in your body as tension, pain, or even chronic injury.” “When emotions remain unmanaged or repressed, they create energy blocks that drain you physically and mentally.” “Golf isn't just a technical game—it's an emotional and energetic one. You need to master your emotions to master your game.” “Slowing down, reflecting, and listening to your emotions gives you the power to transform them into fuel for growth.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Introduction to Emotional Constipation 03:03: Understanding Emotions and Energy 06:06: The Role of Energy in Transformation 08:57: Identifying and Managing Emotions 12:02: The Science of Energy and Emotions 14:57: Vibrational Frequencies and Emotional States 18:09: The Connection Between Mind and Body 21:02: Awareness and Emotional Mastery 23:46: The Impact of Repressed Emotions 26:45: Practical Steps for Emotional Awareness 30:08: The Impermanence of Emotions 32:52: Mastering Your Energy for Life 35:56: Conclusion and Reflection

Karden is a Nervous System Medicine Practitioner, co-author of The Secret Language of the Body and co-founder of Somia international. He has been in the wellness world for over 15 years as a bodyworker and educator.  Although he helped his clients get out of pain, ironically, he began suffering from chronic back pain himself. His pain became ever more debilitating and there were times when he was bed bound, and none of the holistic or western medicine approaches were working. That's when he began studying the psycho-emotional and neurological underpinning of chronic pain and stress based disorders, which led him to clinical training in mindbody disorders and somatic trauma therapies which allowed him 100% heal my debilitating back pain. Most of you will recognize his voice from episode 494 – a twosome with fellow nervous system practitioner Jennifer Mann on signs you're storing unresolved trauma, why it's okay to be triggered and the secret language of the body.  Another great conversation with an incredible human being.  Here are some of the things we talked about in today's podcast:  ·      Feeling and acknowledging emotions is crucial for healing and well-being. ·      Repressed emotions can manifest as intense emotions when they finally surface. ·      Emotional cold plunging, gradually experiencing uncomfortable emotions, can build resilience. ·      Narrative and logic play a role in healing, but they must be combined with somatic practices. Understanding the connection between the adult brain, child brain, and animal body is crucial for regulating the nervous system. ·      The AIR model (Awareness, Interruption, Redesign) can be used to interrupt stress responses and create new neural pathways. ·      Practical techniques like physical movements (e.g., Macho Man Randy Savage) and vocalizations (e.g., voo-ah-ee) can help regulate the nervous system. ·      Rewiring neural pathways and creating new relationships with oneself are essential for emotional regulation and personal growth. ·      And more.    Sponsored by my 1:1 online coaching: https://briankeanefitness.com/one-to-one-online-coaching   Most recent appearance on the BFK podcast Episode 494 Nervous System Practitioners Jennifer Mann and Karden Rabin on Signs You're Storing Unresolved Trauma, Why It's Okay To Be Triggered and The Secret Language Of The Body! | Brian Keane Fitness   (Website) https://somiainternational.com/ (Instagram) Karden Rabin (@kardenrabin) • Instagram photos and videos (Youtube) Karden Rabin - YouTube (Facebook) www.facebook.com/kardenr (Most recent social media post) Karden Rabin (@kardenrabin) • Instagram photos and videos   Emotional Pain Free Micro Course programs.somiainternational.com

In today's episode, we dive deep into a topic that many of us can relate to: the unconscious projection of our repressed emotions. Join us as we explore how these hidden feelings can surface unexpectedly, causing us to react in ways that might surprise us. Have you ever received a text that seemed innocuous, but suddenly you felt an overwhelming surge of anger or anxiety? Maybe you interpreted the message as a personal attack, even though you knew the sender would never intend to hurt you. This reaction is a perfect example of how our unconscious mind tries to protect us, often triggering a fight, flight, or freeze response. We'll break down the science behind these reactions, focusing on the role of the autonomic nervous system, which is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system prepares our body to face perceived threats, while the parasympathetic nervous system helps us maintain calm and balance, known as homeostasis. By understanding these mechanisms, we can better manage our reactions and develop healthier ways to cope with stress and emotional triggers.
