New reports say grease policies may be blocking small business growth in Tacoma

Tacoma can sometimes feel like a place for the little-er guy. Where an aspiring entrepreneur can start a small business without the hyper expensive rents and other daily costs of a city like Seattle.  But, according to recent reporting by the News Tribune, one city regulation may be stifling small food businesses in Grit City. And it has to do with some of the … greasier parts of the job. Most cities, including Seattle and Tacoma, require restaurants to install machines that prevent grease, fat, and other materials from washing down the drains and into the sewer system. But, what those traps look like, and how much they cost, can vary greatly, depending on where a business is located. And that can mean business owners look elsewhere when considering a new space. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! If you want to help out, go to kuow.org/donate/soundsidenotes Soundside is a production of KUOW in Seattle, a proud member of the NPR Network. Guest: Kristine Sherred, Food Reporter at The News Tribune Related Links:  Rigging the system.' Is Tacoma's grease-trap policy killing its small-restaurant scene? - The News Tribune Tacoma contends restaurant grease traps are vital. Is its oversight of them lacking? - The News Tribune As pandemic ravaged restaurants, Tacoma tightened rules for offering food delivery - The News Tribune City of Tacoma response to grease trap stories, courtesy of Maria Lee (Media & Communications Office):  The City recognizes that for new small business owners, the cost and logistical challenges of installing a GGI can be significant. The policy aims to balance environmental protection with economic development. While the City has worked diligently with this community on outreach, the City also recognizes that the challenges faced by some small business owners suggests a need for ongoing dialogue between the City and the business community to explore potential solutions that support both objectives. At this point in time, staff are analyzing potential changes to the City's Side-Sewer and Sanitary Sewer Availability Manual and FOG Program. The need for these changes was recognized in 2023 as part of broader City comprehensive planning efforts, and analysis began in earnest as early as the second quarter of 2024. Once staff has completed its analysis, and those recommendations are presented to the City Manager and the City Council, that same information will also be shared with the public. The Guys did not approach this episode tentatively - rather, it was Tennant-ively.  David Tennant, that is.   Robbie takes this opportunity to introduce the GGI, the GOCA Geek Index, which heretofore will be used to gauge the geek factor of major screen stars, and it appears that Mr. Tennant scores well.  Though he may be primarily known as the tenth (and the fourteenth) doctor in Robbie's favorite series, he also makes appearances in just about every other franchise known to geekdom.  And he just seems like the kind of Scot you'd like to hang around with.   Moon Girl (the 1940's version) takes a spin on the regret-o-meter, net neutrality is back in the news, Jay tries to convince Robbie to watch Hobbits sing in Chicago, and Art's obituary this week is … TikTok?  Grab a pen or a stylus while you listen, and keep your own GGI at home!

LOOP 4.3: Prof. Peter Falkingham, Liverpool John Moores University, was the consultant biomechanist for the series. He introduces us to the importance of biomechanics in CGI, but more widely in determining the physical capabilities of different animals. You need to have a full understanding of the anatomy of the animal, yes, but also the context on the media through which it is moving. Life On Our Planet (LOOP) is a new 8-part series created for Netflix by Silverback Films and Amblin Television. This Steven Spielberg produced series, narrated by Morgan Freeman, is hugely ambitious in its scope, telling the story of life throughout the whole Phanerozoic Eon. Ancient organisms and environments are painstakingly recreated by the supremely talented Industrial Light and Magic, whilst modern natural history scenes add vital context to the story. This show has been worked on for six years, during which time countless papers were read and around 150 different palaeontologists contributed their time and knowledge. The whole production had culture of letting the scientific research dictate scenes, resulting in one of the most accurate on-screen representations of prehistoric life there has ever been. And how do we know all this? Well, our very own team members Tom Fletcher and Dave Marshall have been embedded within the LOOP team since day one! We are therefore in a totally unique position to reveal to you the work that went into this series, from both the production and research side of things. In this unofficial series, we've been granted exclusive access to many of the people responsible for creating LOOP, we explore what it takes to create a palaeontological documentary and we delve deeper into the science with some of the show's academic advisors. Each day, we will be releasing batches of interviews, each relating to a specific episode of LOOP. Image courtesy and copyright of Netflix.

In today's episode, Ashanti Bentil-Dhue interviews Tutu Popoola the lead consultant and director of Slick HR, a consultancy dedicated to building diverse teams for business success. As an industry leader, Tutu helps companies navigate through the intricacies of diversity and inclusion, acknowledging the distinct separation between DI and HR, and the need to address both in the corporate world. She sheds light on her evolution from an HR consultancy to a DEI-centric service provider, a change brought about by client needs and market trends. Tutu shares her experiences and expertise, highlighting the types of clients she works with, the challenges they face, and the progress made within industries towards inclusive workplaces and diversified leadership.   “So how can I work to influence people in a certain way, and also understand that I will not necessarily own the outcome of whatever work I do with them. So I had to be okay with that. If my work involves consulting with them, pointing them in the right direction, guiding them gently, sometimes giving them a bit of a push, and saying, Oh, no, this has to definitely happen. But also understanding that it's not about me, when you're doing this work, you have to separate your personal ego from the work that you're doing. It can't be led by the ego level as well. And really listening to people in terms of what they're saying, and what they're not saying, I think is really important. And also when you listen, then you question when somebody makes a comment or a statement. And then you can say what do you mean by that? I need you to tell me what your understanding of that situation is.. ”   Episode Highlights:  ● Improving the talent pipeline and retention of talent ● Recruitment is a sticking point in diversity and inclusion ● How to become a Ggi practitioner   About Tutu Popoola :   Bio:   Tutu Popoola is the Managing Director of Sleek HR, an outsourced consultancy enabling organisations to create HR & DEI solutions for business success.   She recognises from her background in HR that applying employment law principles alone was not enough to create diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces and will not bring about the advancements that forward thinking organisations are craving for. She supports organisations through DEI Audits, Data Collection & Analysis, Strategy Planning and Implementation and has partnered with clients across industries such as Public Relations and Communications, Energy, Logistics and Retail.   She loves nature and the outdoors, especially in the summer months.   Links:   www.sleekhr.co.uk   https://www.linkedin.com/in/tutu-popoola/   https://www.linkedin.com/company/sleek-hr/ If you would like to apply to be a guest on the show email: operations@goodsoilleaders.com   If you would like to schedule a capability briefing call with our team, email: operations@goodsoilleaders.com    If you would like to apply for DEI PRO Coaching, email: operations@goodsoilleaders.com  Stay Connected with Ashanti:  LinkedIn: Ashanti Bentil-Dhue

"People are more likely to trust a business that has been recommended by a friend or family member, or that has positive reviews online. Nielsen did a survey with 30,000 people and found that approximately 92% of decisions regarding which businesses to patronize are based on other people's opinions, recommendations, and reviews," states Andre Cvijovic - Founder and CEO of Referrizer, an extremely robust marketing automation platform that helps businesses grow by generating leads and increasing sales. Referrizer's "sweet spot" are fitness facilites that hover near or above the $100 per month price point.  Prices for their system vary and range from $200 up. Interestingly, they also provide a (virtually unheard of!) complete, "done for you" system where they will keep working for you until they get you the results they promise. Referrizer actually integrates with many CRM's (for example MindBody) so you can track exactly how much revenue their efforts are generating.  In this episode, you will learn: 1. Anne Scott was a digital nomad before the term existed; a "Digital Nomad 1.0" she likes to say. One day in 2010 she looked up and realized that she'd lived in 10 countries in 10 years and that she felt at home on the road. She founded Girl Gone International (GGI) to help her connect with other women who were navigating life while living outside of their home countries. Today, GGI has several hundred thousand members in nearly 200 cities around the world who hosted more than 3,000 free offline events last year. More than just a network for people who are traveling, the mission of GGI is to create a community of women who support and empower each other to live anywhere, belong everywhere, and make a home wherever they are. In addition to publishing an e-zine that celebrates the lives that women are living overseas, their all-volunteer staff is focused on hosting real-world events to spark the connections that build community. Much of the hype around crowdfunding has frustratingly proved to be so much hot air. The United Nations Global Compact and the U.S. State Department are working to change that by bringing crowdfunding forward to finance projects in the developing world, especially projects designed to address the social problems endemic there. U.S.-based crowdfunding site Gate Global Impact is partnering with the UN Global Compact to launch Gateway 2.0, a site that will allow members of the UN Global Compact’s Social Enterprise Hub to access capital of from $500,000 to $10 million. Rosedel Davies-Adewebi, project manager for social enterprise and impact investing at the UN Global Compact, explained that through this innovative partnership the UN Global Compact hopes to advance this form of equity crowdfunding as a new approach to impact investing, addressing gaps in the missing middle of finance and connect capital to impactful businesses addressing critical areas related to the UN-Post 2015 agenda. Similarly, the U.S. State Department will soon launch a partnership with the crowdfunding site RocketHub to accelerate social impact projects from 60 countries around the world. Molinari will be speaking at the Social Enterprise and Crowdfunding Conference, which I a organizing, on September 26, 2014 at Snowbird (secfc.co). More about the UN Global Compact: The UN Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Endorsed by chief executives, the Global Compact is a practical framework for the development, implementation, and disclosure of sustainability policies and practices, offering participants a wide spectrum of workstreams, management tools and resources — all designed to help advance sustainable business models and markets. To further promote the advancement of sustainable business models, the UN Global Compact has launched a workstream focused on the concepts of Social Enterprise and Impact investing. The aim of the workstream is to build an enabling environment for corporations within the Global Compact, investors and social enterprises that will facilitate the formation of partnerships designed to advance innovations addressing development challenges. Davies-Adewebi’s bio: Rosedel Davies-Adewebi is the Project Manager for the Social Enterprise and Impact Investing workstream of the United Nations Global Compact. The workstream is designed to build an enabling environment to support the formation of partnerships among social enterprises, corporations and investors . The partnerships have the aim to advance innovations addressing global development challenges. At the UN Global Compact, Rosedel is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the workstream and leading its operations globally. Rosedel has spent the last eight years developing programs and managing projects designed to connect social innovators with financing and technical assistance to scale impact. Prior to joining the UN Global Compact, she served as a consultant on impact measurement data to the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). Rosedel’s other professional experience includes developing the investment strategy for a seed fund providing financing for maternal and child health innovations at the Tony Elumelu Foundation, a Lagos, Nigeria based foundation.
