ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna. Jag står på grusgången utanför det som en gång var min farmors hus. Under en idegran ligger en tegelsten kvar. Min syster och jag lekte att idegranen var vårt hus och tegelstenen vår spis. Min farmor finns inte kvar. Barnen som lekte under idegranen finns inte kvar. Det finns inte längre någon anledning att återvända hit, säger jag till mig själv. Att komma hem. Vad är det egentligen? Vi längtar hem. Hemma längtar vi bort. Hemmet romantiseras och förkväver, idealiseras och förkastas. Litteraturhistorien är full av berättelser om hemkomst. Och det första exemplet i den västerländska litteraturen är fortfarande ett av de mest fängslande: Odysseus irrfärder på den långa vägen från det trojanska kriget hem till Ithaka, där hustrun Penélope väntar. Någon har sagt att en litterär klassiker är en bok som ständigt går att återvända till, eftersom den förändras varje gång man läser den. Bokens berättelse vävs om på nytt, figursydd efter våra egna livstrådar, och läsningen blir en återkomst till bokens välkända men ändå föränderliga hem. Längtan hem kan vara längtan bort, till den plats där det måste finnas någon som kan förstå oss, och som är som vi Från Odysséen och framåt förkroppsligas den manliga hemkomsten ofta i en kvinna. Hon som hela tiden varit hemma, och varit hemmet, medan mannen irrat inte bara på kartan utan också på samvetets spelplan. I hennes novell Street Haunting A London Adventure (Att strosa omkring på gatorna. Ett londonäventyr) iscensätts flykten från hemmet genom en banal inköpsrunda, som blir till en brusande odyssé genom London. Vardagliga händelser förvandlas till omvälvande äventyr, och hela världen strömmar genom textens vågor. Men vid hemkomsten är sagan slut och identiteten utsuddad: Men när vi närmar oss vår egen tröskel är det ändå betryggande att känna hur de gamla ägodelarna, de gamla fördomarna omsluter oss och hur jaget, som har förgrenat sig i så många gathörn, som har fladdrat som en nattfjäril mot ljuslågan i så många oåtkomliga gatlyktor, nu är skyddat och omgärdat. Hemmets trygga vrå både beskyddar och bemästrar, lockar och skrämmer. Varje människa bär på en längtan till ett förlorat barndomsparadis, menar John Sjögren i boken Återställelsens glädje. En essä om att komma hem från 2018. Men med denna längtan följer också insikten om att den måste förbli ouppfylld. Allt det ljuva, allt det hemlighetsfulla mystiska som livet när vi var barn bar ett löfte om, visade sig endast peka mot och mynna ut i dödens totala tomhet, skriver han. I Sjögrens idealiserade minne av barndomens hem kan vi sorglöst släppa våra vuxna bekymmer medan någon annan tar hand om disken och befriar oss från vår smärtsamma särart. Men alla barndomar är inte paradis. Alla hem är inte hem. Längtan hem kan vara längtan bort, till den plats där det måste finnas någon som kan förstå oss, och som är som vi: under den fula ankungens skräppeblad eller hos kaninen Pricken som är apart i en helvit kaninfamilj, tills det visar sig att en hel hög prickiga kaniner väntar bara några kullar bort. En roman där hemmets och längtans koordinater ständigt kastas om är Evelyn Waughs Brideshead Revisited (En förlorad värld på svenska), kultklassiker för ständigt nya generationer. Författaren själv definierade dess ärende som den gudomliga nådens verkningar på en grupp sinsemellan olika men nära förbundna människor. John Sjögren spinner vidare på den tråden i sin essä, och den karta han ritar över vägen hem till det förlorade paradiset är religionens och återfödelsens. Men den jordiska kärleken är ett lika starkt tema i boken, där huvudpersonerna är på flykt från sig själva och finner tillfälliga hem hos varandra. Det är all visdoms begynnelse att känna och älska en annan människa, konstaterar Charles Ryder, bokens berättarröst. Hans hjärta driver honom på jakt efter den där låga porten i muren, som jag visste att andra funnit före mig och som ledde till en omhägnad och förtrollad trädgård. Porten leder inte bakåt till minnena eller inåt till skyddande undanskymdhet, utan framåt, utåt. Det är dörren till synlighet och tillblivelse. Att komma hem är att komma ut. Att vara sig själv är att komma hem. Boken utgör själva hemkomsten, både i romanens fiktion och i dess verklighetsbakgrund. Den allt överskuggande längtan efter att få vara den man är behandlas mästerligt, återigen av Virginia Woolf, i romanen Orlando, skriven om och till vännen och älskarinnan Vita Sackville-West. Orlando börjar sin livsbana som ung adelsman i 1500-talets England och slutar som pärlbehängd medelålders slottsfru i samtidens 1920-tal. Romanen skapar en regnbågsfärgad kuliss av erfarenheter i tid och rum som en nyckel till Orlandos komplexa natur. Och när hon till sist återvänder till sitt barndomshem, vars arvsrätt hon förlorat på grund av sitt kön, blir hon äntligen hel: Hela hon mörknade och samlades, som när man ritar en bakgrund som ger ytan rondör och stadga och gör det grunda djupt och får det som ligger nära att synas långt bort; och allt samlas ihop, som vattnet samlas innanför brunnens stenar. På samma sätt var hon nu mörk och stilla, och [hade] blivit vad som med rätt eller orätt kallas ett enda jag. Orlandos livscirkel sluts, och boken som hon skrivit på i trehundra år, Ode till en ek, blir publicerad efter århundraden av refuseringar. Boken utgör själva hemkomsten, både i romanens fiktion och i dess verklighetsbakgrund. Var ligger hem? Och varför är det så svårt att hitta dit? Vi söker efter vårt hem på platser det redan flytt ifrån. Den låga porten som leder hem finns varken under en ek i England eller på Ithakas stränder. Den grekiske filosofen Aristoteles skrev i sitt verk Om diktkonsten att grunden för all konst är efterbildning, mímesis. Vi människor älskar att efterbilda och härma vår omgivning, och att känna igen och identifiera det vi ser. Igenkänningen, anagnórisis, är nära besläktad med insikten, och den punkt i ett drama då sammanhang avslöjas, linjerna sammanstrålar och vändpunkten sker. Och på samma sätt blir berättelsen om hemkomsten också till själva hemkomsten, där efterbildning och igenkänning bygger upp det förlorade på nytt. Vi kommer hem när vi känner igen oss. Kanske är det just återkomsterna som skapar hemkomsten, inte tvärtom, skriver Kerstin Ekman i Gubbas Hage, boken som är ett långt ode till människans hemmahörande i den vilda naturen. Den årligt återkommande igenkänningen av återvändande blåsippor och rödhakar skapar hemkänsla djupt i själva den jord där förnyelse och upprepning vilar som löften.
