Portfolio of three different areas 1972 school established PK–8 School Felt Like a startup even though they've been around for a long time. Giving more tours than serving our own community. Over the last decade school has grown by 60% Blue Ocean Strategy Cirque du Soleil is it high art or circus? Didn't want to be known as a traditional school. Didn't want to be known as a progressive school. how do you shape your narrative around your school's brand? Wanted to be known as an innovative school. We would lose every time if we tried to compete with others Mount Vernon Ventures Consulting with other schools Value proposition - current practitioners leading change. What is your innovation intention? Ventures work on developing products and tools that are accessible. Business development as well - Mount Vernon Online. Multiple Pathways R&D Report around AI Funding is generated from Mount Vernon Ventures Traditionally generated from Non-tuition generating activities. Externally, how could we reinvest back into the school? How do you separate from funding being on the backs of our people? Find another market that funds things. How do we create multiple pathways for our students? Learning outcomes explored in an inquiry model - assessed based on proficiency. Inquiry, Competency-based system. Lego-bricking courses - systems taken Mod System is based on 9-week time periods - students take four courses during a mod. They have to have more math courses at the backend of their high school course. Did a lot of open share when we started. Agnostic about things they implement with schools. Ep 80 – Phoenix Rising: How Stephanie Stuckey Reclaimed Her Family Business We're going absolutely nuts over our latest guest, Stephanie Stuckey, as she joins us to share her story about taking back & growing the family business after a extremely successful career in law, the values that shape Stuckey's and how important it is for family businesses to keep those values while at the same time, needing to evolve how they are presented to stay generationally relevant. There's so much more packed within the hour, so don't miss it! OUR GUEST Stephanie Stuckey Stephanie Stuckey* is CEO of Stuckey's, known for generations as a highway oasis serving up pecan log rolls and kitschy souvenirs. Founded in 1937 by her grandfather, W.S. Stuckey, Sr. in Eastman, Georgia, Stuckey's grew into over 350 stores nationwide by its peak in the 1970's. The company was sold in 1964 and sadly declined for decades under a series of corporate owners. Fortunately, Stuckey's returned to the family in 1985 under the leadership of W.S. Bill Stuckey, JR. and is now being continued with Bill's daughter, Stephanie. The Company acquired a pecan shelling and candy plant in Wrens, GA in January of 2021 and have been scaling production of the Stuckey's branded snacks and sweets – including the iconic pecan log roll – to be sold in almost 5,000 retail stores nationwide. Stephanie purchased Stuckey's in November of 2019 and assumed the role of CEO. Stephanie's achievements include being named one of the Most Admired CEOs of 2022 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine and a graduate of Leadership Atlanta. She serves on the corporate board for Bealls, a Florida-based retailer with more than 550 stores. The Stuckey's story has been featured recently in the New York Times Sunday Business Section, the TODAY Show, and The Washington Post. When she's not running Stuckey's, Stephanie enjoys traveling by car to explore the back roads of America and pulling over at every boiled peanut stand and the World's Largest Ball of Twine. --- If you're a family business or a family business consultant and want to be on the show, share your story and help other family businesses, send us an email to producer@thefamilybizshow.com or visit us at The Family Biz Show | Family Business Podcast With Michael Palumbos (familywealthandlegacy.com) to fill out our web form! - CRN-5604187-040323 *not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. Topics to Discuss: National Employment Situation report contains some solid numbers, but mixed headlines. The solid numbers are in job gains, where the nation added 213,000 jobs, well above the market expectation of around 190,000. Revisions to the two previous months added another 37,000 jobs. The mixed part of the report is that the headline is the unemployment rate (U3) ticked up from 3.8% to 4.0%. The expectation was for no change. This was mostly due to an increase in the labor force participation, which moved up 0.2 percentage points after being essentially unchanged since February. At this point the economy needs the additional workers, so this is a fundamentally good thing. The broader measure of labor underutilization (U6) also rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%. Average hourly earnings rose 2.7% from a year ago, slightly below expectations, but about in line with recent history. Jobs gains were led by professional and business services, followed by manufacturing, which had a solid 30,000 job addition, mostly in durable goods. Strength was also seen in health care, construction, and mining. Retail was the only sector with a notable loss of jobs (-22,000), but that did not offset last month's gain of 25,000. Other sectors were essentially unchanged. All in all, a pretty good report, despite an easily misinterpreted rise in unemployment. In this week’s episode of Secure The Seat, I interview Theia Smith. We discuss how to creat seats for other women in part 2 of Leading While Black. Theia is a graduate of Spelman Collge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. As the founder of the nation’s first city-funded business incubator for ventures that are 100% women-owned and women-led, Theia Smith champions for equal access to economic self-sufficiency for women and girls, particularly those whose talent is often overlooked and underestimated. Theia is a member of the 2018 class of Leadership Atlanta. Her media recognition includes being named one of Atlanta’s 2017 ‘40 Under 40’ by The Atlanta Business Chronicle, one of Inc. Magazine’s ‘17 Inspiring Women to Watch in 2017’, featured as a ‘2017 Superwoman’ by Atlanta Tribune Magazine and ‘One of 13 Successful Spelman Alumnae to Watch’ by Walker’s Legacy. She is the recipient of the 2019 Women’s Empowerment Ministry Raising the Profile Award and the League of Black Women’s 2018 ‘Black Rose’ award, for championing for minority women’s empowerment and economic prosperity. She has been featured in a portfolio of media outlets, on the topics of gender inclusion, entrepreneurship and economic advancement for women of color, including The Atlantic, Inc. Magazine, Access + Opportunity Podcast with Carla Harris and TV One. Connect with Theia at https://www.linkedin.com/in/theia/
“If you want to improve your communities, you improve conditions for women,” says Theia Smith, founding executive director of the City of Atlanta Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative, which provides office space, mentorship, educational resources and access to capital to start-up companies owned by women. The initiative, begun in May 2016, graduated its first class of entrepreneurs in 2017 and now hosts a new cohort of 15 women. Over fifteen months, they will work together in the Flatiron Building in downtown Atlanta, growing their businesses while they learn from one another and outside experts. “Isolation is the enemy of entrepreneurs,” notes Smith, who herself is a recent graduate of Leadership Atlanta, a nine-month executive-level training and development program. In this episode of Access & Opportunity, Carla Harris talks with Smith about the model that the Atlanta Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative has established for empowering women-owned businesses and how that model could be replicated in other cities. A key element of the Atlanta program is its diversity: the women in the incubator are as racially and socioeconomically diverse as the city where they live, and they range in age from their early 20s to late 50s. “We know the talent is equal,” says Smith. “It's the opportunities that are not.”The guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co.
