Life Check Yourself 436 – How to Navigate the world of relationship and dating when you're neurodivergent with Jeremy Hamburg and Ilana Frank Marni welcomes Friendship and Dating coaches, Jeremy Hamburg and Ilana Frank. Having worked for years towards creating strategies that empower autistic and neurodivergent adults, Jeremy and Llana give in-depth insight on the dating world. The duo has come up with a program, dubbed Social Life 360, that teaches clients to confidently meet new people. In this conversation, they touch on our basic need to connect as humans and what that really means. They delve into the struggles faced when dating and making friends as a neurodivergent person. Much of the advice is applicable to people across the board. * How to open your mind * Why is timing important? * The Impact of words Are You Rigid? [11:10] This rigidity in thinking when it comes to dating is not just limited to neurodivergent individuals. It is something we are all guilty of. And it reduces the dating pool and with it the likelihood of success. One of the diagrams we have in our program is a diagram that shows how limited your dating pool is when you don't open your mind. How to be Present [15:03] Many of us get overwhelmed by the unpredictability that comes with dating. However, there are little ways around it that help you spend mental energy on enjoying yourself and the person rather than getting anxious. By knowing what to expect and having your date in a more familiar setting, you're freeing up that energy to really be present in the moment. They're going to know the sensory impact that that date is going to have. So, they're in control. They're prepared. Recognizing That Inner Critic [25:27] That inner critic voice in your head? Don't listen to it. It stems from a history of rejections. Many individuals, neurodivergent or otherwise, face challenges as a result of past rejections. By identifying and understanding that inner voice, you can start working on changing it and moving forward in social and dating situations. Part of it is understanding that recognition. There's an inner critic voice in my head that's keeping me stuck. This week, we got to speak with Misilla dela Llana, who is the host of Learn To Grow, primarily on Instagram and YouTube. She is originally from the Philippines but has been living in the States since she was 10. Her passions are gardening/ homesteading and crafting, besides having a full time job as a homeschooling mother. Her videos and tutorials help to make things simple for growers, but she also will incorporate some plant science, so even more advanced gardeners will hopefully gain some knowledge as well. She is very knowledgeable on extending the gardening season, and recently wrote a book on Four Seasons Gardening, which we get to speak about as well. She's a big fan of using Smart Pot planters, which we appreciate her featuring us on some of her videos and pictures. We love promoting and featuring people like Misilla on The Growing Revolution. If you feel like you know of someone that we should meet, please email us at info@smartpots.com. More episodes are coming soon. Don't forget to like this podcast and subscribe for more great content!

The new found footage horror movie The Curse of Aurore arrives on Blu Ray, DVD, and Streaming Rental on January 12th. The film tells the story of three friends who go to Canada to come up with a movie script about the Canadian crime legend of Aurore. Aurore was a child in a Quebec suburb in the early 1900's who was murdered by her parents. It's said to be the story that brought crimes against children to the attention of the nation. Since then, a legend has arisen around the story of Aurore. Producer and star Llana Barron happened to have lived in Quebec in the same town as Aurore Gagnon and her family and from there, the movie, The Curse of Aurore was born. On Friday, January 8th, our Sean Kernan had the chance to chat with star and producer Llana Barron and Director Mehran Torgoley about The Curse of Aurore.

On this week's episode of Saturday School, we're revisiting the 2005 thriller "Cavite" by Ian Gamazon and Neil dela Llana, which is a unique take on our exploration of Asian Americans in Asia. The film basically takes all the anxieties Asian Americans can feel when we go back to Asia -- the awkwardness of not speaking the language well, the feeling of being completely lost, the guilt over having turned into a foreigner in what's supposed to be our "homeland" -- and transports this all into a thriller scenario, having a fictional terrorist exploit all our main character's insecurities in a life-or-death hostage situation. Adam (played by Ian Gamazon), a night security guard in San Diego, is on his way to the Philippines for his father's funeral. But as soon as he gets to the airport, he hears something ringing in his bag, and finds someone has slipped him a cell phone. Turns out the man on the other end of the line has his mother and sister, and will kill them unless he does everything he says. The film is super low-budget guerrilla-style filmmaking. Most the film feels like a home video following Adam racing through the streets, alleyways, and busy marketplaces of the Philippines as this man is taunting him -- and it's an impressive feat they pulled off. It feels like a scary documentary. Also, this was post 9/11, so in some ways, it's reacting to Islamophobia through the lens of a non-practicing Muslim Filipino American man.
In Latino City: Immigration and Urban Crisis in Lawrence, Massachusetts, 1945-2000 (University of North Carolina Press, 2017) Dr. Llana Barber explores the transformation of Lawrence into New England's first Latina/o-majority city during the second half of the twentieth century. As with other industrial cities throughout the Rust Belt, Lawrence encountered an urban crisis via the processes of deindustrialization, disinvestment, and suburbanization in the decades following World War II. During this period, the city also experienced a continuous influx of imperial migrants from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Interweaving the narratives of urban crisis and Latina/o migration from the Caribbean, Barber examines the experience of Latinas/os in Lawrence through the lenses of imperialism, displacement, and exclusion. Whereas existent scholarship on the urban crisis has primarily focused on the 1960s and 1970s, Latino City pushes this discussion into the 1980s and 1990s, while also illuminating its effects on second tier cities like Lawrence. As she details the similarities and differences between African American and Latina/o experiences during the crisis era, Barber adeptly explains how Latinas/os revitalized Lawrence's failing social, economic, and political institutions, and in the process, saved the city from the abandonment of white residents and capital. David-James Gonzales (DJ) has a PhD in History from the University of Southern California. He is a historian of the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Civil Rights, and Latina/o identity and politics. His research centers on the intersection of Latina/o civic engagement and politics on the metropolitan development of Orange County, CA throughout the 20th century. Learn more about your ad choices.
