Described as ‘the first lady of Irish cycling', Dervla Murphy was renowned for her intrepid spirit, and she remained passionate about travel, writing, politics, conservation and bicycling until her death in 2022. In this episode of the Slightly Foxed podcast we have gathered a number of those who knew and worked with Dervla to discuss the life and work of this extraordinary travel writer. Gail Pirkis and Steph Allen, from Slightly Foxed, worked with Dervla during their time at John Murray Publishers. Rose Baring was her editor at Eland Books and Ethel Crowley was a friend and editor of the recent anthology, Life at Full Tilt: The Selected Writings of Dervla Murphy. Together with our host Rosie Goldsmith they discuss Dervla's early years and inspiration, consider the experience of publishing her work and examine her place in the Ireland of her time. Born in Lismore, Ireland, in 1931, Dervla lived there until the end of her life. She was an only child and her parents, who originated from Dublin, encouraged her independence and love of books. Her father – who later became the much-loved Waterford County Librarian ‒ had been involved in the Irish republican movement and had served time in Wormwood Scrubs prison for his activities. Dervla spent her childhood caring for her mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, and then left school at 14 to care for her full-time. When her parents died in 1962 Dervla, at the age of 30, found herself free to travel. She acquired a bicycle and set out on a journey to Istanbul, through Iran and on to India during one of the worst winters in recent memory. This would become the subject of her first, and most famous book, Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle, published in 1965. There followed numerous voyages with her trusty steed and 25 more books, including her highly acclaimed autobiography Wheels within Wheels. She won worldwide praise for her writing and many awards, including the Edward Stanford Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Travel Writing and a Royal Geographical Society Award. Dervla took huge risks, mostly travelling alone and in famously austere style, whether in far-flung Limpopo, the Andes, Gaza or closer to home, where she documented the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Battling injury and political circumstance, she immersed herself in the lives of ordinary people caught in the shifting tides of power that dictated the terms on which they lived. To these people, she listened. What resulted was some of the most astute and compelling travel writing of the twentieth century. As the table choose their favourite book of Dervla's, we also have our usual round-up of current reading, including the latest mystery from Kate Atkinson, Death at the Sign of the Rook, the Booker Prize-nominated The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng, and Jon Dunn's monograph on the hummingbird, The Glitter in the Green. For episode show notes, please see the Slightly Foxed website. Opening music: Preludio from Violin Partita No. 3 in E Major by Bach Hosted by Rosie Goldsmith Produced by Philippa Goodrich

Host Sarah Henry is joined by Partner Solicitor Nusrat Uddin, Head of the Public Law and Human Rights department at Wilsons Solicitors. In this episode, Nusrat shares insights into her work, with a focus on modern slavery, forced labour, and human trafficking. She discusses several groundbreaking cases she has worked on, as well as her involvement in Business and Human Rights cases, particularly those addressing forced labour within supply chains. Nusrat Uddin specialises in public law and human rights, with a particular focus on modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking. She brings cases against central and local government bodies for failing their duties, as well as claims against those who have exploited their workers. In 2023 she was awarded Public Law Lawyer of the Year in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the year awards. Nusrat also specialises in Business and Human Rights work. She has provided evidence for several US investigations into complaints against companies, from the fashion industry through to rubber gloves. US authorities have banned products from entering the US where indicators of forced labour in supply chains have been found. She believes the UK's approach is far weaker and is critical of the Modern Slavery Act's approach. Nusrat's team have pioneered the first case against the UK authorities in relation to forced labour in their own supply chains, which settled with the government conceding and agreeing to improve their due diligence. The case was covered widely in the media and Nusrat was interviewed by Channel 4 News which can be seen here. She is currently building a second case in relation to the government's due diligence of Uyghur made products in their supply chain. Nusrat was instructed in the key Supreme Court case of Wong v Basfar 2022 dealing with diplomatic immunity in trafficking civil claims. The Supreme Court established for the first time worldwide, a current diplomat is not protected from claims of human trafficking. The judgment was groundbreaking with global political implications. Nusrat was presented with the 2022 Anti-Slavery Day Award for Outstanding Contribution to Reducing Vulnerabilities, in Parliament, for her work on this case. Nusrat has a particular focus on improving state support for victims of trafficking and modern slavery. Last year she was instructed in the lead case, K and AM v SSHD [2018] EWHC 2951 (Admin), challenging the cuts by the Home Office to subsistence monies paid to support victims. The High Court found the cuts to be unlawful, resulting in victim support being reinstated to the full amount, and rebates being paid of around £1 million. She often advocates for safeguarding support and accommodation for victims who are facing homelessness and risks of further exploitation. Nusrat was profiled as Lawyer in the News in the Law Society Gazette for the successful case. Nusrat was also awarded a Research Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to compare the UK's models of support to those in the US and Europe, for victims of trafficking and modern slavery who are involved with criminal prosecutions against their traffickers. She presented her research findings at the end of last year and made recommendations to improve the UK's systems. The research has been shared widely, including by Anti-Slavery International and endorsed by Luis deBaca who was the US ambassador for trafficking. She also gave oral evidence in Parliament to the Home Affairs Select Committee for their Inquiry into Modern Slavery in 2019. She outlined key issues for victims in relation to support services, immigration and the criminal justice system; particularly highlighting problems of victims being wrongfully criminalised by the police and immigration systems, instead of being correctly identified and protected. Nusrat is also currently instructed in a significant challenge to police policies in relation to this issue. In recognition of her work in this field, Nusrat was shortlisted in the 2019 Anti-Slavery Day Awards, for Outstanding Contribution to the fight against Slavery, in the Enabling and Supporting Survivor Rights and Entitlements category. Nusrat was Highly Commended in the 2019 Law Society Excellence Awards for Human Rights Lawyer of the Year. Nusrat was also shortlisted as a finalist for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year 2019, in the Children's Rights category, organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. Nusrat has gained international experience having worked in the Human Rights and Legal Aid department of BRAC in Bangladesh, (formerly Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) one of the world's largest NGOs. She also volunteered at Al-Haq, a Human Rights NGO based in Palestine, building potential cases against corporations operating in the West Bank. Nusrat is currently a Trustee of Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights.

Five veteran new immigrants were recently recognized for their outstanding contribution to Israeli society in different spheres, especially during the Iron Swords war, in a ceremony at the presidential residence. The Aliyah and Integration Minister's Award was bestowed on Yom HaAliyah, Aliyah Day, which was marked on November 7. Among the recipients honored was Dr. Adriana Folberg-Blum, a Jerusalem resident who organized volunteers to help farmers with the agriculture harvest in the Gaza periphery. Initially taking family and friends in her private car, as interest grew, the project expanded to a weekly bus, provided by Leket. Folberg-Blum, who was born in Brazil and moved to Israel from Canada more than 20 years ago, says the project has been a meaningful Israeli integration experience for both veteran and new immigrants. As a mother of a combat soldier who served in Gaza during the war, she told KAN reporter Naomi Segal the initiative grew out of a desire to broaden volunteer efforts. Co - Founder Can't Buy My SIlence Zelda Perkins was the first woman to break an NDA in 2017, signed decades earlier, with Harvey Weinstein. She brought the systematic abuse of NDA's to the attention of the British Government and international press, giving evidence at two parliamentary inquiries, which uncovered an epidemic of misuse, and pushed the Solicitors Regulatory Authority to take disciplinary action against the lawyer who created the NDA for Weinstein. Her actions have been inspiring others to come forward by her example. She has been campaigning for legislative and regulatory reform in the UK since 2017 and launched the Global campaign Can't Buy My Silence cantbuymysilence.com with Canadian Co Founder, Professor Julie Macfarlane in September 2021. They are working with Government in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Canada and Australia to change legislation and regulation around the misuse of NDA's. They have had legislative success in the UK, Ireland and Canada with the first laws of their kind banning NDAs being passed in all three countries, however there is still a long way to go. Zelda was named a Person of the Year by Time magazine in 2018, by the Guardian in 2020 and in 2023 awarded for her Outstanding Contribution to Gender Equality by UN Women UK. Her character was portrayed by Samantha Morton in the Universal Pictures feature “She Said” documenting her part in the downfall of Weinstein. keywords Zelda Perkins, Harvey Weinstein, NDAs, workplace harassment, power dynamics, legal challenges, justice, settlements, advocacy, gender equality, cultural change, power dynamics, non-disclosure agreements, emotional toll, moral injury, advocacy, self-care, trauma, accountability, legislation summary In this conversation David and Naomi speak with Zelda Perkins, a prominent figure in the fight against the misuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) following her experience with Harvey Weinstein. Zelda shares her journey from working at Miramax Films to co-founding the organization Can't Buy My Silence, highlighting the systemic issues of power dynamics, the challenges of seeking justice, and the emotional toll of legal negotiations. The conversation delves into the broader implications of these issues in various workplaces and the ongoing advocacy for legislative change to protect victims. In this conversation they discuss the cultural changes needed to address power dynamics, particularly in relation to non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and their emotional toll on individuals. They emphasize the importance of accountability and the need for a shift in societal attitudes towards power and abuse. The discussion also highlights the concept of moral injury, the challenges faced by those under NDAs, and the ongoing campaign to reform the use of these agreements. takeaways Zelda Perkins broke her NDA with Harvey Weinstein, sparking a movement against NDA misuse. The legal system often fails victims of harassment and abuse. Power dynamics in the workplace can lead to exploitation, especially for women. Money in settlements can complicate the pursuit of justice. The emotional toll of legal negotiations can be profound and disorienting. Victims often feel responsible for the actions of their abusers. The culture of silence around abuse needs to be challenged. Advocacy for legislative change is crucial to protect victims. Zelda Perkins was the first woman to break an NDA in 2017, signed decades earlier, with Harvey Weinstein. In this episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer and Julia Vaughan Smith, Kate Brassington, and Jenny Rogers, explore the nuances of trauma-informed coaching. The panel give thought to the complexities and responsibilities involved in trauma-informed coaching, discussing the internal dynamics of trauma, its influence on coaching practices, and the importance of sensitivity to clients' experiences. The conversation covers the distinctions between coaching and therapy, ethical considerations, and the skills necessary for trauma-informed coaching, such as presence, attunement, and reflective practice. The importance of safeguarding, establishing boundaries, and self-care for coaches is also addressed. We consider: What is trauma and how can we recognise it in our coaching practice? What are the reasons why clients seek trauma-informed coaching? What are the benefits for the client of working with a trauma-informed coach? Where is the overlap between coaching and therapy in addressing trauma-related issues? How can we address trauma in coaching? What are the core qualities and skills needed to coach in a trauma-informed way? How can we train to become a more trauma-informed coach? Do self-care and supervision look different for trauma-informed coaches? How should we contract appropriately for client safety? What are the risks, safe-guards and limits of trauma-informed coaching? In what ways can coaching contribute to trauma healing? Our experts shared their approaches to working with trauma in coaching, for example, understanding clients' backstories without explicitly using the term “trauma”. Trauma can be subtly present in coaching sessions, even when clients may not explicitly seek help for trauma-related issues. Trauma-informed coaching helps clients process trauma in the present and integrate their experiences in safe ways through creating a trusting environment where they feel heard and understood. Our guests today are: Jenny Rogers is a leader in a new approach to coaching which combines insights from psychotherapy with the pragmatic emphasis on change, drawing on a career in coaching spanning three decades. She works with senior clients in the law, medicine, finance, healthcare, performing arts and media who typically face a major transition in their lives. Julia Vaughan Smith is an Accredited Master Executive Coach and Supervisor and was in private practice as a Psychotherapist, focusing on trauma processing and healing. She is the author of a number of books including ‘Coaching and Trauma', ‘Therapist to Coach', and ‘Daughters: How to Untangle Yourself from Your Mother', exploring the impact of developmental and ancestral trauma on this relationship and how to become untangled. Kate Brassington is a Coaching Psychologist (GMBPsS) and PCC ICF-certified Trauma Informed Coach who researches applied coaching strategies. This week we welcome author and clinical psychologist Dr. Mark McConville to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Dr. McConville discusses his must read book for parents entitled "Failure To Launch." McConville investigates the root causes of this problem: Why are modern kids “failing to launch” in ever-increasing numbers? The key, McConville has found, is that they are struggling with three critical skills that are necessary to make the transition from childhood to adulthood–finding a sense of purpose, developing administrative responsibility, and cultivating interdependence. In Failure to Launch, McConville breaks these down into achievable, accessible goals and offers a practical guide for the whole family, to help parents instill those skills in their young adults–and to get their kids into the real world, ready to start their lives. Enjoy this valuable conversation! Mark McConville Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Beachwood, Ohio, specializing in adult, adolescent, emerging adult, and family psychology. Dr. McConville is a senior faculty member at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and has lectured and taught widely on the subjects of child development, parenting, and counseling methodology. His book Adolescence: Psychotherapy and the Emergent Self (Jossey-Bass, 1995) was awarded the 1995 Nevis Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Gestalt Therapy theory. He is the author of the Counseling Feedback Report, an innovative and widely used adolescent assessment tool, and is co-editor of The Heart of Development: Gestalt Approaches to Childhood and Adolescence, vols. I & II,(The Analytic Press, 2001). His latest book titled ‘Failure to Launch' which investigates the root causes of why modern kids are struggling to transition from childhood to adulthood was released in January 2020. In addition to his private clinical practice, Dr. McConville serves as Consulting Psychologist to Hathaway Brown School and University School, both in the Cleveland area. Gregory Irwin is an extremely experienced A Camera First AC who first got into the business 44 years ago. He received a 2016 Society of Camera Operators Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions as Camera Technician. His most recent project is the Joker sequel Joker: Folie à Deux coming soon. Greg frequently gives talks on the importance of character and credibility in the camera department. The camera department is in a leadership role on any production. There's always going to be challenges on set, but it's important to remember that if the camera department seems like they're panicking, it affects the rest of the production. A good camera department is always helpful, no matter what department needs it. Never be rude or show panic, even when things aren't going to plan. Greg says, “I want my team to know everything at all times, and I want them to be better than me. If I can develop a young camera person into a rock solid, good human being as well as a good camera technician then I've done my job.” Greg discusses: Character and credibility in the camera department-remembering you are in a leadership role Taking a business approach to the camera department Interacting with the director, cinematographer, producers and showrunners How to hire others in the camera department- be sure to vet your camera crew before hiring them Be a “one minute manager”- choose people you don't have to micromanage Handling the first phone calls with the filmmakers and producers: save talk about rates, money, deals until about the 4th phone call so you can get to know the person who you're negotiating with Generally talk rates/business aspects for your camera team as well Prep for the camera prep day: prep should already be done ahead, including what you need for your camera package Prep and budget: build everything you need for prep based on meetings with the filmmakers & DP, timestamp prep lists to keep track of everything. By draft 10, you should be clear on what's needed and camera budget should be very clear at that point Look the part- better to dress like a professional Be organized and don't have a sense of entitlement How to get noticed and move up in the camera department Find Greg Irwin: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0410389/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras www.hotrodcameras.com The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz
Hello everyone and welcome to qualitative conversations, a podcast series hosted by the qualitative research special interest group of the American Educational Research Association. I am Jori Hall, a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I also serve as the chair of the Egon Guba Award for Outstanding Contributions to Qualitative Research for the Qualitative Research Special Interest Group. I am beyond excited today to be joined by Dr. Giovanni Dazzo who was the recipient of the 2023 QRSIG Outstanding Dissertation Award for his dissertation titled Restorative validity: Exploring how critical participatory inquiry can promote peace, justice and healing. Giovanni is an interdisciplinary researcher, and evaluator and assistant professor at the University of Georgia. His work is focused on critical theoretical approaches to research and evaluation methodologies. In particular, he is interested in exploring the intersections of validity and ethics within critical participatory forms of inquiry, and the ways in which research and social policies can better be informed by communities. His work has been featured in a multitude of peer reviewed journals, such as the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, Educational Action Research, Cultural Studies ⇔ Critical Methodologies, and Conflict Resolution Quarterly. Giovanni is also the co-author of the recently published textbook by Sage called Critical Participatory Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Guide. Giovanni, it is a pleasure to have you with us today.Thank you, Jori. It's a pleasure to be here. You make me sound so good.Well, it's easy based on all the fabulous things you've done. Are you ready to get started? Giovanni?Yeah, let's get started.Great. So I was thinking that our audience would greatly appreciate learning more about your dissertation work. Can you just talk a little bit about your dissertation, maybe about its scope?Yeah, so the dissertation really focused on a long term critical participatory action research project in Guatemala. And I partnered with an organization that conducts forensic anthropology. It's the forensic anthropology foundation of Guatemala. So essentially, in their day to day, they investigate possible made mass grave sites that resulted from the country's 36 year armed conflict, which happened from 1960 to 1996. And then they work closely with communities who witnessed and experienced those atrocities to document the stories of those who are forcibly disappeared by the government. And they then extract DNA from living family members exhumed human remains from mass grave sites, and then attempt to match the DNA so they can identify those who were disappeared. So I worked alongside the forensic anthropology foundation of Guatemala or FAFG. And Kaqchikel speaking my community to see how we could all together as a research collective, explore how the research process could be made more restorative. And really, if you start to think about it, the work of FAFG is literally extractive to communities. They're pulling DNA from swamps, they're digging into the earth, and they're hoping to produce a match. Unfortunately, the success rate at the moment is just 14%. Because these human remains have been in the ground anywhere between 28 to 64 years. And those who witnessed the atrocities happen. They continue to pass away as time goes by. So we really sought to form the basis for this conceptual methodological framework called restorative validity. Truthfully, I stopped calling it a framework, because journal reviewers kept asking, is it a theoretical framework, a conceptual framework, a methodological framework so I started calling it what it is, and it's an agenda. It's a call to action. And we really wanted to explore and understand the factors that aid or impede

His imagery explores the collective impact we as a species are having on the surface of the planet — an inspection of the human systems we've imposed onto natural landscapes.Exhibitions include: Anthropocene (2018) at the Art Gallery of Ontario and National Gallery of Canada (international touring exhibition); Water (2013) at the New Orleans Museum of Art and Contemporary Art Center in Louisiana (international touring exhibition); Oil (2009) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
