Whatever type of music you love, Rick Rubin has probably left his mark on it. Rubin, a founder of Def Jam Recordings and a former co-chairman of Columbia Records, might be the most influential music producer alive. A very partial roll call of the artists he's worked with: Johnny Cash, Jay-Z, Run-DMC, Eminem, Beastie Boys, Slayer, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West, Neil Diamond, Brandi Carlile and Adele. We recorded this in 2023, after Rubin released a fascinating, unusual book, “The Creative Act: A Way of Being.” I'd expected stories of late-night sessions with famous musicians, but instead it read like a spiritual tract. Rubin was offering a guide to how to cultivate the mind states that lead to real creativity. And that's what this conversation was about, too: how to open yourself up more to the world, and learn to trust your own taste. Today we're diving into an absolutely wild romance scam involving a man accused of pretending to be a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver—or, depending on the day, an ultra-wealthy Swiss real estate mogul. Authorities say the four-year scheme targeted at least 26 women and brought in roughly $1.3 million. Apparently dating apps weren't stressful enough already.The details only get crazier. The alleged scam included social media accounts packed with 49ers gear, luxury cars and images designed to make the whole thing look legitimate. According to the story discussed on the show, some of the online material was AI-generated, and the fake identity became established enough online that search engines and AI tools reportedly started treating the guy like an actual football player.Then comes the fake wealth. Screenshots supposedly showed bank and investment accounts containing millions of dollars, and once relationships were established, an alleged accomplice would enter the picture as the “wealth manager.” Three-way calls, fake investment returns and promises of high-yield opportunities followed. When victims ran out of money or started asking questions? Suddenly their extremely successful NFL boyfriend became extremely unavailable.It launches the crew into a bigger conversation about romance scams, our weird relationship with wealth and just how easy it has become to manufacture an impressive-looking life online. Rafe points out that you barely need a real podcast anymore—you can film yourself in front of a microphone, dispense some motivational nonsense and convince the internet you've appeared on 400 episodes of something called The Alpha Wealth Mindset Experience.Okay, we made that title up. But you've absolutely seen that guy.Listeners pile on with stories of fake celebrities allegedly trying to scam people, including Martina McBride and Mark Harmon impersonators. If Mark Harmon suddenly slides into Mom's Facebook messages and needs $700 in gift cards, maybe call somebody.That's the kind of public service you only get from a funny podcast with absolutely no qualifications to provide public services.The show also tackles the old belief that celebrity deaths happen in threes and why our brains are so desperate to find patterns in random events.From there, we discover Goodwill is getting into the record-store business with a media-focused concept called Rewind. Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, vintage audio gear and whatever forgotten three-disc CD changer somebody's mom finally convinced Dad to get out of the basement. It might be heaven. It might smell like somebody else's basement. Either way, we're interested.Then it's time for Crap on Celebrities, where things get wonderfully messy.The crew gets into music and entertainment news, including Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields Festival, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks. This is technically economics if nobody from an accredited university is listening.The entertainment chaos continues with Coyote vs. Acme, a creepy movie called Buddy that basically asks what would happen if a beloved children's mascot completely snapped, and news of Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle for a Days of Thunder sequel alongside Anne Hathaway.The crew also discovers a movie about the creation of Hooters is in development, accidentally invents an entirely different restaurant concept during the conversation, and immediately starts yelling “trademark” because apparently that's how intellectual property law works now.Finally, we get famous musicians trashing other famous musicians. In this episode, Charles sits down with TJ Horn, a Boston-area drummer who has played with several bands — most notably the critically acclaimed Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys. Beyond his drumming career, TJ is a passionate live music fan who set a personal record in 2025 by attending 75 concerts in a single year. He's also known in certain Boston circles for his live readings of erotic fan fiction. It's a wide-ranging conversation about music, performance, and what it means to love live shows. TJ traces his passion for live music back to a 1994 Depeche Mode concert at the Blockbuster Pavilion in Glen Helen, California — a show his uncle brought him and his family to when he was just 12 years old. That night sparked a lifelong obsession. That same year, his uncle also took him to Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and the legendary Lollapalooza '94 — where TJ saw the Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, L7, and a then-unknown Green Day, just weeks before they exploded in popularity. Over the years, TJ has accumulated remarkable concert stories: chatting with Fred Durst for 40 minutes at Ozzfest while watching Tool, seeing Porno for Pyros perform a surprise acoustic set on a walkway at Lollapalooza '95, and stumbling upon a tiny 40-person Touché Amoré show after standing in the snow for a wristband. His 75-show year in 2025 came about naturally — fueled by a wide network of friends with different musical tastes, a work schedule that freed up his evenings, and a simple philosophy of saying yes when a cheap ticket or a spare invite came along. On the music-making side, TJ is a self-taught drummer who got his start playing along to Green Day and the Ramones in his bedroom as a military kid who had just moved to Boston. He's gone on to play with bands spanning punk, hardcore, and art-rock, including The Martyrs and a rock opera project featuring Amy Winehouse's saxophonist and members of The Replacements. His longest creative relationship has been with Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys — a theatrical "steam crunk" band known for elaborate costumes, steampunk conventions, annual RPM Challenge albums, and now an upcoming horror sci-fi film directed by Walter himself. TJ also speaks fondly of the erotic fan fiction readings that made him unexpectedly famous in Boston's burlesque and cosplay scene — a side gig that started with dramatic readings of bad dating app messages and turned into a crowd-favorite variety act.
