Three Resolutions and One Word Teaser:The New Year is a great time to refocus and gain some clarity, but New Years' resolutions feels to me like something that sounds good in theory but doesn't work in practice. At least it hasn't for me. Instead of resolutions this year, I'm using one word to help me keep my priorities straight, and three intentions that, if I work them daily, will lead me to my major goal of 2026. I'll apologize on the front end if this episode comes off as narcissistic. I feel a bit awkward talking about myself and diving deep into how my brain works, but I'm doing it this way because I think if you can see what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, you will be able to take these practices and adapt them to your own lie and leadership. Notice the word “adapt.” Please don't copy. Rather, think about how your context and needs are different from mine and how you might tweak the core ideas to better align with how your brain works and what your schedule allows. Show Intro Celebrations:· Caveat· I can walk without a limp! And Christmas and New Years (families both born into and chosen) Key Points Part 1· Two “secrets” to being a great leader:o Be presento Priority management· One word – overview· One word helps us be more intentional· Sharing previous one words· How this year's one word shapes my priorities and daily actions Sponsor Spot 2:● With IXL, you get a personalized online learning and teaching solution that helps you improve achievement, empower teachers, track progress, and more. My goal is to remake my body to maximize the time I have left to hike. A key measurement for the goal is: Complete the 71-mile High Sierra Trail in August of 2026. The High Sierra is a stunning trail through the southeast Sierra Nevada range in California. It ends at the summit of Mt. Whitney (elevation 14,505), the highest peak in the continental United States. I am used to hiking mountains, but at 5,000 feet, not 10,000 feet. Half of the trail is at altitudes high enough to cause altitude sickness. Notice my goal is not to hike the High Sierra Trail. It is the measurement. Do not mistake your measurement for your goal! Three intentions I need to hold to achieve my goal:Build my days around movement. Movement is the most important thing.Move in different ways (resistance training, yoga, biking, hiking, water-aerobics) every dayConsume media that encourages me to move. Notice:● These intentions drive actions I can take every day● If I act on these intentions each day, there is a very high likelihood of meeting my goals● They keep me focused on movement and combat my own distractibility In goal setting and strategic planning, the biggest mistake I see people consistently making is they do not operationalize the goal. They develop plans and benchmarks, but fail to identify the daily practices and actions that will inevitably lead to success.

The primary focus of today's brief centers on the significant impacts of a powerful Pacific storm train, which is anticipated to bring excessive rainfall and heavy snow across various regions, particularly California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest. We begin by addressing the heightened risk of flooding in California, where coastal downpours are likely to raise river levels and exacerbate travel difficulties due to road closures and chain controls in mountainous areas. As the storm progresses, we will see its effects extend into Nevada and other states, with advisories for high winds and winter weather being issued.Takeaways:* A powerful Pacific storm train is currently affecting multiple regions across the United States.* California faces a slight risk of excessive rainfall, impacting coastal areas and Sierra Nevada mountains.* Travelers should anticipate road closures and chain control requirements due to severe weather conditions.* Nevada has winter storm warnings in place, with significant snow expected in various counties.* Wind and rain are expected to increase in Washington, accompanied by flood warnings in certain areas.* Arizona will experience moisture from the Pacific storm, leading to potential flooding and winter weather advisories.Sources[USGS M4.5+ Past Day | https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/summary/4.5_day.geojson][NWS Bay Area | https://www.weather.gov/mtr/][NWS Hanford (San Joaquin Valley/Sierra) | https://www.weather.gov/hnx/][NWS LOX Gale Warning | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=lox&wwa=gale+warning][WPC — Excessive Rainfall (CA Slight Risk today) | https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/ero.php?day=1&opt=curr][SFGATE — Bay Area flood watch & storm timing | https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/flood-watch-bay-area-through-christmas-21256885.php][NWS Reno — Warnings/Travel briefing | https://www.weather.gov/rev/][NWS Las Vegas — Flood Watch & wind messaging | https://www.weather.gov/vef/][NWS Reno — Flood Watch text (issued 1:45 AM PST) | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=flood+watch][NWS Portland — hazards | https://www.weather.gov/pqr/][WPC — CA-to-OR heavy rain corridor (Slight/Marginal) | https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/ero.php?day=1&opt=curr][NWS Seattle — hazards & hydrology | https://www.weather.gov/sew/][NWS Phoenix — Flood Watch & event timeline | https://www.weather.gov/psr/][NWS Flagstaff — winter headlines | https://www.weather.gov/fgz/][NWS Buffalo — Hazardous Weather Outlook (Lake Ontario counties) | https://www.weather.gov/buf/BUFHWOBUF][NWS Buffalo — hazards | https://www.weather.gov/buf/] This is a public episode. The episode articulates the significant impact of a potent Pacific storm train, which continues to target the western region of the United States, particularly California and Washington. We delve into the widespread flood watches issued by the National Weather Service, affecting vast areas along the California coast and valleys, alongside heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada, which complicates mountainous travel. Additionally, we address the winter storm warning currently in effect for the Washington Cascades, where hazardous conditions prevail due to blowing snow. Our discussion further encompasses the emergency declaration approved by FEMA for Montana, aimed at providing federal support in response to recent flooding incidents. We conclude by emphasizing the need for vigilance and safety amidst these challenging weather conditions, while we continue to monitor ongoing developments across various states. A comprehensive examination of the ongoing meteorological conditions reveals a formidable Pacific storm train currently imposing significant weather events across the western regions of the United States. The National Weather Service has issued widespread flood watches encompassing much of California's coastal and valley areas, while simultaneously, heavy snowfall is complicating travel through the Sierra Nevada mountains. This duality of weather phenomena underscores the potential for both flooding and treacherous travel conditions, particularly in the context of the Sierra, where snow accumulation is exacerbating the risks associated with winter travel. Further north, the Washington Cascades are under a winter storm warning, highlighting hazardous conditions including blowing snow and limited visibility, which pose serious risks to both residents and travelers alike. As we navigate through these intense weather patterns, it is imperative to remain vigilant and informed, as river flood warnings persist in various basins, reflecting the substantial impact these storms are having on local ecosystems and communities alike.Takeaways:* The National Weather Service has issued widespread flood watches across California's coastal regions and valleys.* A potent Pacific storm is currently affecting the West, leading to hazardous weather conditions.* FEMA has approved an emergency declaration for Montana in light of recent flooding incidents.* Winter storm warnings are in effect for the Washington Cascades, indicating severe weather challenges ahead.* Flood warnings persist on several rivers, including the Skokomish, indicating ongoing minor flooding issues.* Minnesota is experiencing icy road conditions due to overnight freezing rain, affecting travel safety.Sources[FEMA | https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20251220/president-donald-j-trump-approves-emergency-declaration-montana][NWS San Diego | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=flood+watch][NWS Bay Area | https://www.weather.gov/mtr/][NWS Sacramento | https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?product1=Flood+Watch&warnzone=CAZ066][NWS Eureka (Eel River) | https://www.weather.gov/eka/][NWS Seattle | https://www.weather.gov/sew/][NWS Warning Text | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=sew&wwa=winter+storm+warning][NWS River Warning | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=flood+warning][NWS Medford | https://www.weather.gov/mfr/][NWS Advisory Timing | https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=43.1787&lon=-122.1389][NWS Spokane | https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?firewxzone=IDZ101&product1=Winter+Weather+Advisory][Montana Governor | https://gov.mt.gov/Documents/GovernorsOffice/executiveorders/View?doc=EO112025DisasterDeclarationStatewideSevereWindEvent002.pdf][NWS Missoula | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=winter+weather+advisory][NWS Fairbanks | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=winter+weather+advisory][MnDOT 511 | https://511mn.org/list/events][MPR News | https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/12/22/road-conditions-icy-schools-delayed-in-southern-minnesota] This is a public episode. A reading of selected musings from the great John Muir with nature video montage for your contemplation and relaxation.John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914), also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. His books, letters and essays describing his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park, and his example has served as an inspiration for the preservation of many other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he co-founded, is a prominent American conservation organization. In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to his wife and the preservation of the Western forests._________________________________
In this episode, we explore a simple yet profound energetic process for manifestation—one that invites your body to take on the form of an element or emotion in another dimension to actualize its deepest desires. Rather than forcing or controlling the outcome, this guided process is about holding space, witnessing, and allowing your body to craft and create from a space of higher self-awareness and elemental embodiment. This practice can be done multiple times a day and supports deep alignment across dimensions, helping your body work in harmony with emotion and elemental forces to bring forth what it needs and desires. What You'll Learn:- How to invite your body to take an active role in the manifestation process- Why working with emotions and elements in other dimensions supports deep creation- How to enter a witnessing state and release control over the manifestation process-- The importance of allowing your body to choose its own element and emotional vibration- Techniques for energetic alignment and integrating multi-dimensional creationThis is a segment from Aleya's coaching sessions.
In this episode of Bigfoot Society, Jeremiah Byron talks with Angel, a lifelong outdoorswoman from the Pacific Northwest, who shares multiple stunning encounters that changed the way she sees the woods forever. From strange predation events on a Deer Island, Oregon farm to a jaw-dropping sighting of a massive, dark, human-shaped creature crouched in the Hamma Hamma River in Washington, Angel walks us through the moments that made her question everything she thought she knew about the forest. Her story continues deep in the Willamette National Forest near Sahalie Falls, where she and her husband were forced to shelter in their SUV after a series of chilling, escalating Bigfoot whoops echoed across the ridge—sounds identical to the legendary Sierra Nevada recordings.Angel also opens up about the emotional impact of these encounters, the eerie radio interference she experienced afterward, and a surprising family connection: her father's own Bigfoot sighting decades earlier in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. If you're looking for real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, and firsthand wilderness experiences from the PNW, this episode delivers one of the most compelling accounts yet.
What you need to know to fight back against diseases this winter. Also, a Sacramento nonprofit dedicated to helping immigrants and refugees weighs in on new restrictions. Plus, a comprehensive guide to wildlife in California's Sierra Nevada.
In this episode of This Old Tree, with Doug Still...High up in California's Sierra Nevada mountains stands the largest tree on earth by volume - the General Sherman Tree. The famous giant sequoia has captivated millions of visitors, but few know the rich tapestry of stories woven around its massive trunk. Join us as we explore the “Giant Forest” of Sequoia National Park with former park ranger and author William C. Tweed. From the indigenous Monache and Yokuts who first walked among these giants, to ambitious Euro-American explorers like John Muir, to a Black Army Captain who became the park's first actual manager, discover how "first encounters" with giant sequoias become life-altering events. What evolutionary secrets enable sequoias to grow so large? Why do frequent fires help them to survive? And what is "sequoia time?" The General Sherman tree and its mates have changed how we view the natural world and our place within it.

It's the FIRST Smack-Dab Center of the Holidays episode, a town profile of Mifflinburg! The holiday episode is about...Mifflinburg? Yes! For a couple reasons, but the biggest one is the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market, the annual recreation of an authentic German Christmas market on Market Street. Crafts and goods (many handmade, many unique), indulgent foods and drinks for the young and adult, music, entertainment, and Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy (click on that link for a New York Times profile of Hilby) all in one place, a wonderful festival. We've also got a wonderful interview with Nikki Keister-Hornig, the proprietor of Gable House Bakery, where we wander surprisingly far afield (Hong Kong, Italy) but then bring things back home with Nikki's insights on cookies: it's hard to bake just three, so baking is so often a communal activity. She'll also tell you her secrets on how to bake great pastries with supermarket ingredients, and the best thing she's ever made at Gable House (BOURBON was involved!). I'll also tell you about a trip I took to Asheville, NC for the release of Sierra Nevada Celly Drippins, a brewery-only beer made from the "drippins" from the huge hop sacks they use to dry-hop Sierra Nevada Celebration. There's a short interview with Sierra Nevada's Brian Grossman (chief brewer at North Carolina, and son of founder Ken Grossman) about how Celly Drippins is made, and a report on my first visit to Buc-ee's, the famously gargantuan Texas-based "convenience store" chain. Hey, remember the scalloped oysters I told you about last episode? I made them for Thanksgiving, and had the leftovers for breakfast on Friday! Remember: today is Small Business Saturday, and there's a growing list of central Pennsylvania small shopping suggestions for you at the new website! That's SeenThroughAGlass.com! Once again, huge thanks to my daughter Nora Bryson for building the site, with a merch store, a blog, Corgi pix, and more to come. What I'm Drinking Today is hyperlocal. Boal City Brewing Cream Ale is a delightfully delicate but flavorful way to savor a beer that won't fill you up; perfect with your big holiday meals. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is getting into the cold: where to find the best cup of hot chocolate in State College! I have notes about three American Whiskey Master Class signing events in central PA in December, including one next Sunday that's a fundraiser for one of our favorite local non-profits, the Penns Valley Conservation Association! You can get tickets for that one right here. Remember, a signed copy is a great holiday gift for your whiskey-loving friends that you can now buy at the new website! Next episode is another holiday episode, back on the regular Thursday schedule. Get ready! See you in two weeks...er, ten days! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! The Tahoe TAP podcast is back, tapping into the Things, Adventures, and People fueling life in the Sierra Nevada. Hosts Mike Peron and Rob Galloway return to the studio to share stories and voices from around the basin, catching listeners up on what's happening across the Tahoe region. In this episode, they sit down with Amy Ohran, President & Chief Operating Officer of Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley — one of the most storied ski resorts in the United States. The conversation explores both her personal journey in the industry and the evolving legacy of Palisades Tahoe itself. Ohran joined Palisades Tahoe in September 2024, bringing nearly 35 years of experience in the snow sports industry, much of it rooted in the Tahoe and Western mountain communities. Before stepping into her current role, she served as Vice President & General Manager of Northstar California, and spent two decades with POWDR, including two years as VP & GM of Woodward Mountain Centers and eight years as President & GM of Boreal Ridge Corp. Her career also includes 16 years at Mt. Bachelor, where she held multiple leadership positions such as Director of Staff & Skier Services and Director of Ski & Ride School — experience that helped shape her reputation as a thoughtful, people-centered mountain operator. Beyond resort leadership, Ohran is deeply involved in the broader ski industry and the Tahoe community. She serves on the boards of the National Ski Areas Association, Tahoe Fund, and North Tahoe Community Alliance, and has been a member of the Ski California Board Executive Committee since 2018, including a term as Chair from 2019–2020. In this episode, Tahoe TAP takes listeners inside the decision-making, collaboration, and vision required to lead one of the country's most iconic mountain destinations — and what that means for the future of winter sports, local communities, and the Tahoe region at large.
When Brian Grossman started working for the brewery his father co-founded he expected to be making beer right away. Instead he was put to work scrubbing out fermenters. Over the years at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. he has held a number of jobs in both the original Chico, California location and in the Mills River, North Carolina brewery. Today he goes by chief brewer and is increasingly becoming the public face of the venerable beer brand that just celebrated its 45th anniversary. Earlier today, shortly before the North Carolina brewery opened its doors to the public for pours of Celly Drippins, he sat down for a conversation about generations, responsibility, brewing and hops. Send us a textThe giants keep falling...New came out this week that Monster will shutter the original Cigar City Brewing in Tampa. It's been nothing but a downward trend for Cigar City since Monster took over, even before the overall industry started to slide. Corporate and craft just don't mix. A sad day. (After the show taping we also learned that Rogue Brewing will be closing.)More lighthearted fun news in the beer world - Carlsberg is making the world's smallest beer. This lil' guy isn't much bigger than a grain of rice but it is a real bottle, with a real cap, that hold real (non-alcoholic) beer. We've also got a new Winter seasonal coming for Sam Adams. It's the first new Winter seasonal in over 30 years. BOLO for Sam Adams Winter White Ale and let us know what you think. In other news Sierra Nevada's Celly Drippins gets a "national" release, a sour beer pioneer retires, and the beer institute is gunning for THC bevs... but I think our government just made that fight pointless.Have a great week, Y'all. The primary focus of today's briefing is the current weather conditions across the United States, particularly the anticipated storm system that is expected to bring substantial precipitation to California and the Pacific Northwest. I report that there are no active tropical cyclones in either the Atlantic or Pacific basins, nor is any formation expected in the forthcoming week. Additionally, wildfire activity remains low nationally, with only a significant incident reported in Arizona, where the Stanford Fire continues to be monitored. Furthermore, I highlight the establishment of resource centers in Alaska to assist survivors of recent storms, underscoring the ongoing recovery efforts in affected areas. As we assess the current seismic activity, I note that no damaging earthquakes have been reported, reflecting a period of relative stability in that regard.Takeaways:* The National Hurricane Center reports no active tropical cyclones across the Atlantic or Pacific basins, indicating a period of calm in these regions. * Heavy precipitation is anticipated in California and the Pacific Northwest, necessitating awareness of potential winter weather impacts in elevated terrains. * Wildfire activity in the United States remains at a preparedness level of one, with only a single significant incident reported in Arizona. * Alaska's State Emergency Operations center is actively supporting survivors of the 2025 West Coast storm through a multi-agency resource center in Anchorage. * A quick-moving winter storm is currently affecting the Sierra Nevada region of California, prompting winter storm warnings for high elevation areas. * Montana is experiencing high wind warnings that are set to remain in effect throughout the day, particularly in the north-central region. In 1846, 87 pioneers took what they thought was a shortcut to California—but a series of fatal decisions, impossible terrain, and early snowstorms trapped them in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where starvation drove survivors to unspeakable acts, and some say the tortured spirits of those who perished still haunt Donner Pass to this very day.IN THIS EPISODE: The tragic demise of the Donner Party has become infamous. But what led to the failed journey, and to the eventual cannibalism some of the party resorted to in order to survive? (The Tragic Story of the Donner Party) *** Mary Ann Cotton managed to poison three husbands to death, as well as killing eleven children, before she was finally caught. How did England's first female serial killer get away with it for so long? (Mary Ann Cotton, England's First Female Serial Killer) *** Reddit asked men and women who have served in the military to share the creepiest things that happened to them while on duty. After hearing some of the stories, you might think the word “creepy” wouldn't be sufficient enough to describe them.
