⏰ How much time would you spend on executing the perfect hack? ⏰   The user going by the name of ‘JIAT75' spent almost three years infiltrating and contributing to a GitHub repo for one singular reason – access to release manager rights for the next XZ Utils update. In this episode of Threat Talks, host Lieuwe Jan Koning is joined by Thomas Manolis, Information Security Officer at AMS-IX, and Jeroen Scheerder, Security Specialist at ON2IT, to discuss this meticulously executed breach in the open-source community.   Using clever social engineering tactics, Jia Tan (JIAT75) built a credible reputation within said community, gaining trust and access to introduce malicious code undetected. The breach was only discovered by chance when Andres Freund, an engineer at Microsoft, traced unusual system latency back to XZ Utils and uncovered the backdoor.   What exactly happened? How lucky did we get with Freund discovering the backdoor? And how do we know that something like this hasn't happened before?

Datacenters: Blijft Nederland de gateway tot Europa?

Nederland is al sinds de start van het internet de "gateway tot Europa". Nederland werd als eerste Europese land verbonden met de Verenigde Staten. De Amsterdam Internet Exchange is één van de grootste exchanges ter wereld, de vraag is alleen hoelang nog?  In Nederland zitten datacenters in het verdomhoekje en de bouw van nieuwe datacenters is onmogelijk geworden doordat onze stroomnetten vol zitten. Een oplossing laat nog vijf jaar op zich wachten, terwijl andere Europese landen niet kunnen wachten het stokje van Nederland over te nemen. Vanuit de AMS-IX lopen veel goede verbindingen naar andere Europese landen en steden. Dat maakt Nederland een aantrekkelijk land om je infrastructuur te plaatsen want het biedt de zogenaamde "gateway tot Europa". Nederland kent dan ook een groot aantal datacenters, veel  grote IT-bedrijven en cloudproviders zijn actief in Nederland.  Dat hebben we te danken aan die goede infrastructuur en connectiviteit. Indirect zorgt het ook voor economische groei en werkgelegenheid, al dragen ook andere bijkomstigheden daaraan bij. De positie van Nederland als "gateway tot Europa" staat echter onder druk. Er is steeds meer kritiek op nieuwe datacenters, vaak niet terecht. Daarnaast piept en kraakt ons stroomnet. Nederland heeft ervoor gekozen om de stroomnetten te privatiseren, met als gevolg dat er onvoldoende is geïnvesteerd in het opschalen van de stroomnetten zodat er meer capaciteit beschikbaar is. Door alle groene ambities zijn de stroomnetten nu overbelast en kunnen er de komende vijf jaar in veel provincies geen zonneparken, windmolens of datacenters worden aangesloten. Andere Europese landen zitten op het vinkentouw en nemen de positie van Nederland als gateway van Europa graag over. Meer hierover in deze Techzine Talks.

AMS-IX heeft het dataverkeer overdag in een week tijd met twaalf procent zien stijgen, nu veel mensen niet op kantoor maar vanuit huis werken. Dat zegt het internationale dataknooppunt tegen BNR. Buiten kantoortijden steeg het dataverkeer met zes procent.

Remco van Mook is al zijn hele werkzame leven netwerknerd. Hij weet als baas van meerdere internetexchanges alles over netwerken, hij moet om die exchanges te laten groeien aantal netwerken, en hij vindt zijn werk zó leuk dat hij het ‘net werken’ noemt. Remco begon zijn cariere bij de NDIX en is inmiddels CEO en oprichter van Asteroid International. Als student aan de Universiteit Twente was hij al betrokken bij het pionieren met snelle internetverbinding en als enthousiast nerd screef hij mee aan een nieuw DHCP-protocol.Omdat Remco nog een jetlag had van de wereldreis die hij net achter de rug had heeft hij chauffeur en partner Miriam Schoon meegenomen en wij vonden dat een prima gelegenheid om haar ook een microfoon onder haar neus te dauwen. Miriam kun je kennen van de Angry Nerds podcast. Ze werkte eerder als Engineer voor onder meer DDS, Demon, RIPE, AMS-IX en de NPO en bewijst met haar TCP/IP T-shirt misschien wel de grootste nerd aan tafel te zijn.Oh ja en er is een nieuwe jingle

Vanmorgen spraken Marie Beth en Misha bij Radio Swammerdam met Geert Lovink over de Digitale Stad en met Ariën Vijn over AMS-IX, het internetknooppunt van Amsterdam. Dit datacentrum in de Watergraafsmeer is een van de meest belangrijke dataknooppunten van Europa. Arien Vijn werkt bij de HvA en het datacentrum en legde ons uit over de Amsterdam Data Tower en de infrastructuur van het internet. Over het datacentrum bij Science Park maakte Mirjam en Marie-Beth onze eerste Swammerreportage waarbij ze zich tussen de zoemende computers en kabelkluwen begaven. Met Geert Lovink tenslotte spraken we over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het internet en de Digitale Stad. Daarbij kwam ook de publieke functie en de privatisering van het internet ter sprake.
