Now he lives with an incomplete spinal cord injury and paraplegia. Today, through adaptation and hard work he is back on the bike in all new way.  I caught up with Bernie a few weeks ago, just before he purchased his new e-bike, a Specialized Turbo Creo, and I am excited to share, on July 11, 2021, he went out on his first long ride on his fave road. During our conversation, Bernie goes into detail about his life-changing accident and his recovery process including his inspiring mindset and amazing physical therapy team and routine. He shares with me the incredible mental strength needed to overcome such a tremendous obstacle and his current journey back to cycling. Bernie dials me in to where his passion for cycling began and how he got into racing. We talk about his career in media from journalism to PR and Paid Media, where he has worked in and around the outdoor and bike industries since 2006 and is currently Senior Account Director in Charge of Paid Media at globally renowned agency, TRUE Communications. He has been published in Men's Health and Outside magazine, and he strives to use his platform to talk about his journey to overcome his injury, as well as speak about the importance of safe and responsible driving, which we talk about on the pod. We also do a deep dive into ablelism, a topic Bernie is passionate about, and his mission to empower people with the education on how to treat those with disabilities. Bernie is an ultra-inspiring person and I am sure you will find this conversation very eye-opening and motivating. I hope it provides some insight into how we can keep each other safe on the move. With the current situation, the rise and requirement for virtual and hybrid events are definitely on the rise - have you made the move yet? Listen to our live podcast every week on our Facebook page, or you can listen to the podcast version to find out how you can make your online events simple. Rich Davies is a Senior Account Director at DRPG. His career started as a sound technician, then Live Experiential Producer before moving into a more strategic role, building a wealth of experience along the way. He's passionate about all things creative, communications, brilliant people experiences and new ways of working Richard starts off by talking about his role at DRPG and the benefits of using a media agency. He discusses the challenges he has faced as a result of COVID and the importance of adapting and being positive throughout it. He moves onto recruitment during these times and how they positioned themselves as a company. Richard expresses his thoughts on hybrid events and the pros and cons around it and if we will return back to normal at a fast or slow pace. DRPG (3:32) Benefits of using external resources (5:58) Challenges (10:01) How the company has positioned itself during COVID (14:25) Hybrid events (22:48) The return to post COVID events (26:52) EVENTMIND is a market leader in the virtual meetings and events sector. EVENTMIND provides training, consultancy and delivery for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience and community. You can give us an email on team@eventmindpro.com or alternatively call us on 0330 133 3485. EventMind does not endorse any particular virtual event platform or software. We review the platforms available on the market monthly (through a combination of client feedback, test events and demos). There's no platform which is an ‘all in one' or ‘all inclusive' solution when it comes to virtual event platforms. Bear in mind, most virtual event platforms were originally live event apps or software. Covid19 accelerated many platforms to pivot into creating virtual event solutions. In the long run, this seems to be a smart move as hybrid events are likely to become standard (especially if you understand how to monetize hybrid events and maximise global audience reach).

In 2001, Walker Sands set out to make an impression on businesses and the world alike. That mission prevails, as evidenced by their longstanding partnerships and expansion from Chicago to San Francisco and, most recently, Seattle. In the past two decades, they've cultivated a culture that prioritizes collaboration. While other agencies have struggled to bring PR and digital services together, they have made it their foundation. This approach has paid off. The company is a six-time Inc. 5000 honoree that has grown revenues 194 percent over the last six years. These numbers are the result of a thriving culture, which Inc., Crain’s Chicago Business and Entrepreneur have recognized in their best places to work rankings. Annie Gudorf is a partner and Senior Account Director at Walker Sands Communications and leads the firm's Seattle office which is fastest growing tech hub in the US. Outside of focusing on growing Walker Sands' presence in Seattle and across the West Coast, she manages a talented team in the agency's enterprise software/professional services practice area with the goal of delivering creative and strategic programs for clients. I invited Annie onto the show to learn more about how she was credited with effectively bringing Walker Sands’ well-established midwestern B2B tech expertise to Seattle. Annie also shares the differences between tech startup founders in the Emerald city vs. the Windy city.

Blake returns! He's back from his travels creating podcasts for several different industries around the country, just in time to welcome Brian Turmail from the Associated General Contractors of America. The AGC represents the people who build pretty much every structure -- and the facilities that support them -- with the exception of homes. He is the Senior Executive Director of Public Affairs and helps tell the stories of general contractors, bridging the gap between what they really do and what people think they do. They are working to dispel the myth that every construction site is just a bunch of inconvenient orange cones and people standing around. Like most of our guests, he is a major advocate of taking the time to call your elected officials. They have had tremendous success with this approach by mobilizing people from the 26,000 firms they represent. Don't miss this episode... and if you've gleaned anything useful from our shows, we'd definitely appreciate you taking 3 minutes to write us a review on iTunes. The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is the leading association for the construction industry, representing more than 26,000 firms, including over 6,500 of America’s leading general contractors, over 9,000 specialty-contracting firms, and more than 10,500 service providers, all through a nationwide network of chapters. Brian Turmail joined the AGC of America in 2008 as Senior Director of Public Affairs. Turmail started his professional career teaching second grade in the District of Columbia as part of Teach for America from 1995 to 1997. He ran the education practice for Washington, DC-based Hager Sharp Public Relations as a Senior Account Director from 1997 to 2001. He then served as the Vice President of Public Affairs for the Fund for the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, before taking a position as the Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration in 2002. After two years with the new security agency, Turmail took a position handling public affairs for the U.S. Department of Transportation. He served as Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs until 2006 and Secretary Mary Peter’s Director of Public Affairs through 2008.
