How do you think the Bible describes the normal experience of the Christian life? Pastor Colin talks about 4 biblical descriptions of the normal Christian life, and one problem that Christians deal with.
Romans 7:4 — The truth that all Christians are united with Christ changes everything. It is no overstatement to say that the doctrine of Christians' union with Christ is one the most important truths for anyone to understand. It is this glorious doctrine that Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounds in this sermon on Romans 7:4 titled “Union With Christ: Its Nature.” Looking at the apostle Paul's epistle to the Romans, he shows that those who believe in the gospel have been delivered from sin and darkness once and for all. While all are born in Adam, all who believe are born supernaturally into Christ Jesus. It means that the law of sin and death no longer reigns in the Christian, and that they are now part of God's family and now forgiven from all sin. They are safe in salvation as Christ is loving and powerful. This doctrine is the ultimate hope against all depression, sorrow, and loneliness because it teaches that Christians have a great friend in Jesus. Listeners are encouraged to ask: “do you believe in Jesus? Do you believe that He has died for sinners? Do you have assurance that God loves?” There is great hope to all who have truly forsaken themselves and put their trust in Jesus. In this week's episode, Krystal is joined by staff writer, Beth White, as they discussed how Christians can form and hold to strong theological convictions. We all know that Christians are called to be set apart from the world. But how do we do that practically? And how do we form convictions in a way that honors the Lord and others? Is it ever okay to walk away from your own mother… or your husband? (Cue the gasps from the peanut gallery clutching their pearls.) If you grew up in church culture, you probably heard that honoring your parents and submitting to your husband meant swallowing abuse with a smile. But guess what? That's not actually what Jesus had in mind.In this episode, I sit down with Christian counselor and author Kris Reese (yes, the YouTube powerhouse with over 476,000 subscribers) to dismantle the toxic myths that keep Christian women chained to destructive relationships.Together, we talk about:The big guilt trip – Why Christians confuse “honor” with “obey” and how that keeps grown women stuck in parent-child dynamics with their 70-year-old mothers. The covenant conundrum – What makes walking away from a spouse more complicated, and why wisdom (not religious rule-keeping) is the real key.The fog machine – Fear, obligation, and guilt: the trifecta abusers use to keep you running in circles like a hamster who just discovered Peloton.Boundaries ≠ lack of forgiveness – FACTS: You can forgive your mom and still not show up to her guilt-drenched Sunday dinners. You can forgive your husband and still not share a bed with him while he weaponizes scripture against you.Manipulation tactics 101 – Victimhood and scripture-twisting are the go-to moves of toxic moms and spouses everywhere. (“You're not being a good daughter/wife” translates to: “My control over you is slipping and I hate it.”)Trauma bonds and porcupines – Why you might be clinging to the emotional equivalent of a barbed-wire teddy bear, and how to finally put it down without losing your sanity. Why Christians stay too long – It's not because they're lazy or selfish. It's because they've been conditioned to confuse holiness with masochism.Read the full show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Go to Kris' website to get on the waitlist so that you're the FIRST to know when her new book, Breaking the Narcissist's Grip, is released!Get her FREE Narcissist Survival Guide. He asks for prayers that God would open doors for him to clearly proclaim the message of Christ, even while he is imprisoned. Paul also encourages believers to be wise in how they interact with outsiders, making the most of every opportunity and speaking with grace, even when in a position of authority like a master over a slave. He then lists several companions who are assisting him, including Tychicus, Onesimus, and others, and sends greetings to various churches and individuals. Paul reminds the Colossians to fulfill the ministries God has given them. He closes the letter with a personal touch, asking them to remember his chains and offering grace to all. Christians are called to be a people of prayer, persistence, and gratitude. We should continually seek God's guidance, praying not only for our needs but also for open doors to share the gospel with others. In every conversation, we are challenged to be wise and gracious, making the most of each opportunity to reflect Christ. We must remember that our words and actions can either draw people toward Jesus or push them away. Like Paul's companions, we are part of a larger mission, encouraging and supporting one another in faith. As we live out our ministries, we should remain alert, faithful, and bold, trusting that God will use our lives to spread His love and grace in the world. Gracious God, thank You for the gift of prayer and the privilege of seeking Your help. Draw us to be devoted in prayer: honest, thankful, and full of faith. Open doors for us to speak the mystery of Christ with clarity and courage. Teach us to walk in wisdom toward others and to let our conversations be filled with grace, seasoned with truth. Strengthen us to encourage one another and to remain faithful to Your mission for us. May we reflect Christ in our words, actions, and attitudes. Use us to bring Your hope and light into every place we go. Thought Questions: What motivates you to be careful how you speak to unbelievers? How might your words be a testimony to the goodness of Christ? How is your prayer life? Why must you bring thankfulness into prayer and direct attention toward praying for other workers in the kingdom? Who are some people you know who encourage you because of their active faith and labor for the Lord? Will you pray for them today?

Summary In this episode, Dr. Michael Easley is joined by theologian Dr. Fred Sanders to explore the essential connection between the Trinity and the Christian life. Dr. Sanders explains how the work of salvation is one unified act of God—accomplished by the Son and applied by the Spirit. Together, they discuss how terms like “indwelling,” “filling,” and “illumination” describe the Spirit's role in bringing believers into the fullness of Christ's work. Dr. Sanders highlights that while different traditions use various words to capture the Spirit's activity, the unifying theme is that the Spirit applies what belongs to Christ directly to believers. He emphasizes that this understanding keeps Christians from fragmenting salvation into pieces and instead shows how the Father, Son, and Spirit work inseparably for our redemption. The conversation also touches on practical challenges: why faithful Christians sometimes reach different conclusions in studying Scripture, how conscience and conviction intersect, and how works fit into salvation. Ultimately, Dr. Sanders reminds us that the Trinity is not “doctrine number 21” tacked onto our faith, but the very center that holds all Christian belief and experience together. Takeaways Salvation is accomplished by the Son and applied by the Spirit. Terms like indwelling, filling, and illumination describe aspects of the Spirit's work. The Spirit takes what belongs to Christ and gives it to believers. Conscience is an unreliable master but a useful servant under the Spirit's guidance. Good works flow naturally from salvation but never earn it. The Trinity is not an add-on doctrine but the framework that unites all Christian belief. Christians are facing a current political climate that is hostile to the traditional, Biblical idea of marriage. It is more important than ever that we know what marriage really is and how God intended to use it. Did you know that in God's design, marriage is about much more than our happiness and fulfillment? Welcome to the first week of the Gospel Spice Podcast's series, "Identity in the Battle," where we embark on a journey through the book of Ephesians. In this lesson, we'll dive into the heart of Ephesians chapter 1, focusing on what it means to have our identity rooted "in Christ." As we walk through Ephesians, we're encouraged to "taste and see that the Lord is good"—embracing the variety and richness that God offers. Overview of Ephesians Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while in prison around AD 60–62. The key purpose of this letter is to urge believers to walk as fruitful followers of Christ, serving in unity and love, particularly in challenging times. Paul's guidance in Ephesians is deeply relevant to our own spiritual journeys today. The book can be split into three main parts: Chapters 1–3: Who we are in Christ (our identity). Chapters 4–5: How to walk out our calling (practical Christian living). Chapter 6: How to face spiritual battles with the armor of God. Identity: In Christ, Adoption, and the Holy Spirit Paul uses the expression “in Christ” (or similar) ten times in the first fourteen verses of Ephesians. This repetition emphasizes that our identity is rooted not in our achievements, background, family, or appearance—but solely in who Jesus says we are. What matters is God's perspective of us, not the world or even those closest to us. Stephanie highlights that understanding our identity is a lifelong process, with four main steps: Discovery: Learn who God is, what He's done, who He says you are, and what He calls you to do. Acceptance: Move from mere head knowledge to heart-level acceptance. Truly taste and see that God is good. Transformation: Let your understanding of God begin to change you from the inside out—your thoughts, your self-image, and your relationships. Daily Living: Live in your new identity daily, relying on the Holy Spirit and the Christian community for support. Adoption into God's Family Paul employs the metaphor of adoption—a process which, in both Roman law and today, requires moving from one family to another, with full legal recognition and new rights. As Christians, we were once “children of wrath,” but God chose to bring us into His family, giving us full rights as His sons and daughters. This legal and spiritual transformation means that our old “family” (the world and sin) no longer defines us, and we now receive an eternal inheritance with Christ. The Holy Spirit: Our Seal and Guarantee Paul says we are “sealed by the Holy Spirit,” who is the guarantee of our inheritance. This sealing means we belong to God forever, and the Spirit empowers us to live out our new identity and purpose. Application and Encouragement As new members of God's family, we are called to let go of old habits and embrace the rights, intimacy, and inheritance God offers us in Christ. This transformation is possible because of the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, who assures us that we are deeply loved, accepted, and called. Take time this week to reflect on these truths. Discover, accept, and step into your identity in Christ—chosen, adopted, and sealed for a purpose far greater than you ever imagined. Discussion Questions: What does it mean to you to be “in Christ”? How does understanding spiritual adoption change how you see yourself? In what ways do you need to daily embrace your new identity and release your old one? Gospel Spice exists to inspire our generation to delight in God. We do this through the podcast, online Bible studies, leadership trainings, and more. We want to serve Christ-followers who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel. We want to love God, because He first loved us. We want to experience the fullness of life with Him—and not be content with stale, boring, leftover faith. Jesus tells us that the most important thing is to love the Lord our God, so we take Him seriously. He adds that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Now, there are many ways to do that, but I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – it is modern day slavery, and it revolts the heart of God. And so, they are our particular neighbors here at Gospel Spice. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil. Now we would love to invite you to join the team in one of three ways: 1, pray Gospel Spice forward – pray for our guests, our listeners and participants, and for us too! 2, play Gospel Spice forward by telling your friends about us, and by please leaving positive reviews and comments on your podcast listening app; and 3rd, PAY GospelSpice forward. Less than 1% of our listeners are supporting us financially. We need your help! Please pay Gospel Spice forward today. It can be a one-time donation, or a monthly one, for the amount of your choice. Your donation is fully tax-deductible in the US. Plus, once we cover our costs, a significant portion of your donation will be given back to Christian organizations that fight human trafficking, and that we vet thoroughly. So, you can know that every dime you give is used for the Kingdom of God. Every little bit helps. So, be part of the spice of the gospel by becoming a financial partner today! You are invited to join us on the Gospel Spice Prayer Bible Study, titled "The heart behind prayer" starting September 20, 2025! Details and registration here: https://www.gospelspice.com/prayer There are a few things in our Christian life that we know we should do more, or at least better – and prayer just might top the list. Prayer is a mystery. Why would a conversation with a human have any influence on God's eternal, sovereign plan? It defies logic, and beckons love. How can God, the Almighty Lord of Hosts, be this close, this personal? It defies understanding, and beckons involvement. But, lack of time, inspiration, and discipline, combined with the ruthless tyranny of our busy lives, push prayer to the periphery, to the “one day I'll get to it” pile. And yet, we can excel at what we endeavor to undertake. So, why isn't prayer more of a spiritual priority? Could we develop a mindset around prayer that made it attractive, inspiring, even maybe delightful? What if we attuned our spiritual ears to listen to God, and our spiritual eyes to see His provision? As an unassuming student, I'm going to humbly offer to share the little I have learned from others about the joy of prayer. I will give us theology, practical tips, and useful resources, sharing what works for me as we, together, learn to pray. If you find prayer intimidating, or if your lack of prayer makes you feel guilty or “less than,” then this is the place for you! If you have been a student of prayer for many years, this is the place for you too! If you have breath in your lungs, then prayer can become one of the deepest joys of your day. Don't miss out! A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT PRAYER To pray is to believe that God not only hears, but that He responds. It is to stand in the gap for a broken world, wielding the authority of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, and trusting in the goodness of the Father. The question is not whether prayer works, but whether we are willing to pray the kinds of prayers that invite God's Kingdom into the darkest places of the earth—and of our own hearts. We may never fully understand the mechanics of prayer, or how it intersects with God's sovereignty, but we are not called to understand everything. We are called to be faithful. And faithfulness means showing up—in prayer, in persistence, in expectation. So today, let us pray not only for the comfort of our hearts, but for the transformation of the world. Let us take our place as image-bearers, co-laborers, and co-heirs. Let us believe that God is still listening—and still acting. Because He is. There's only one way to find out what might happen when we truly pray like this. Let's begin. THE MINDSET BEHIND THIS COURSE Before we begin, let me tell you the obvious: I don't really know how to pray. I'm a humble student and absolute beginner at the holy endeavor that is prayer. So, this course isn't really about what I've learned, or any wisdom I might have gathered. But, I've sat at the feet of many prayer warriors over the decades, through books and teachings. So, I'll share what I learned from them. Humility is going to be our primary heart posture! With each lesson, I will offer a few thoughts, practices, and ideas – with much humility, and not taking myself too seriously. I will also share her favorite books and resources about prayer. FInally, I will introduce you to some of the most influential prayer warriors of our history as the Body of Christ. Most importantly, I will invite YOU to pray! Learning to pray comes from praying. Our humble ambition is to inspire you to pray, and to give you a few tips on how to do that. Then, it's up to you! Prayer is a lifelong endeavor. Let's make it delightful together! So, let's get started. You are invited to join us on the Gospel Spice Prayer Bible Study, titled "The heart behind prayer" starting September 20, 2025! Support us on Gospel Spice, PayPal and Venmo!

He was born to wealthy and noble parents in Carthage (north Africa), and became a prominent lawyer in that city. Around the year 246 he embraced the Christian faith and was baptized by the priest Caecilianus. Immediately he gave all his goods to the poor and retired to a quiet place in the country to devote himself to prayer and study of Christian writings. In 248 or 249 he was elected Bishop of Carthage by the insistence of the people, though some priests opposed the consecration of such a new Christian. Soon after his election, the Emperor Decius began a terrible persecution of Christians, during which Cyprian, in hiding, upheld his flock by letters. During this time many Christians gave in to fear of death and either sacrificed to the idols or signed statements that they had done so. When the persecution ended, the problem arose of how to treat the apostates who wished to be received back into the Church. Rigorist groups such as the Novatians and Montanists held that these lapsi had removed themselves from all hope of salvation and could never re-enter the Church. Cyprian rejected this view (as well as the position of some who would immediately reconcile the apostates); he established the position, still standard in the Church, that apostates could be restored after confession and long penance. His position led to a schism in the Church at Carthage when Cyprian's opponents set up Maximus the Montanist as a rival Bishop. The schism was only ended by a plague that swept the Empire and the city of Carthage in 253-254, together with a renewed persecution of Christians. Saint Cyprian's tireless care for the suffering during this time won most of the schismatics back to his side. When peace returned, Cyprian called a series of Councils in Carthage to resolve the conflicts that had troubled the Church. He upheld the African (and Eastern) churches' practice of reconciling heretics to the Church by Baptism rather than by laying on of hands, as was done in Rome; though Cyprian did not seek to impose this practice on other churches, Rome was not so tolerant and broke with the African church until the death of Pope Stephen. In 256, yet another persecution broke out under the Emperor Valerian. Cyprian was arrested and brought before the Proconsul of the region. He refused to defend himself, and when told that he was to be executed, said only Deo Gratias!(Thanks be to God!). At his execution the holy bishop ordered that twenty-five gold pieces be given to the executioner, and put on the blindfold with his own hands. Note: St Cyprian is missing on this date from traditional martyrologies because he was once confused with St Cyprian of Antioch (October 2). Today is the date of his martyrdom and the date of his commemoration on the Latin calendar.
Today we have Phil Christman on to talk about his book Why Christians Should Be Leftists. Is there a model of Christianity aside from right-wing fundamentalism--something more in like with the teachings of this fellow Jesus Christ? The David Bentley Hart essay mentioned can be found here.
Are we scrolling ourselves numb while our souls quietly starve? On this episode of Candid Conversations, Jonathan Youssef talks with Brett McCracken and Ivan Mesa, editors of Scrolling Ourselves to Death: Reclaiming Life in a Digital Age, about how digital overload is quietly shaping who we are—often more deeply than we realize. Dive in as they reveal why technology's grip is so persistent, how endless scrolling subtly reshapes our hearts and habits, and why reclaiming our attention is more than a productivity hack. It's a spiritual battle for deeper living and true community. With candid insight and practical wisdom, Brett and Ivan explore the challenges of our dopamine-fueled media culture and the hope Christians can find in refocusing their lives on embodied relationships and intentional spiritual rhythms. People become like the environment they spend their time in. At least that's what I've been told. For example, if you work at IBM, you become amazingly well organized for some strange reason. If you live in a college town, or if you work around a college, it's amazing how your vocabulary can change; sometimes increases. Oh, and your clothing? Yeah, it becomes a little bit more collegiate. You know? I've noticed that people who live near the ocean or resort areas, they just kind of dress, you know, more loose, more casually all year long. If you move from the North to the South, you may very well find your pace slowing down to match your environment. When I moved to the New York area, I know my driving changed. They say in New York about the roads there that there are two kinds of people, the quick and the dead, and I decided to become the quick. You become like your environment. That seems to be a pretty consistent principle; maybe too consistent. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Drawing a Line." Now, our word for today from the Word of God comes from 2 Timothy 3 - one of the more amazing chapters in the Bible. If you want to read a startling description of the last days of this planet, read 2 Timothy 3 with today's newspaper or news website in your other hand. It's startling because of how it matches up with our headlines. Verse 1 says, "There will be dangerous times." And it talks about these characteristics of people that lead you to believe the reason it's going to be dangerous is because of the death of love. There won't be much love in that world. Paul's orders to Timothy are included in this chapter, and God's orders to us. Verse 14, listen: "But as for you, you continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of because you know those from whom you have learned it. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Now, Paul is saying if you live in a world that is racing away from God's standards, you can't afford to become like your environment even a little. See, there's always a noticeable difference between lost people and God's people. It's kind of my equal distance theory. There's always an equal distance between the standards and lifestyles of the people of God and the people of the world. Let's say figuratively speaking that the church, or the people of God, are always ten miles closer to God than the world is. The problem is that as the world moves to the left, away from God, so does the church. Now, we're still ten miles away from the marriages of the world, and from the sexual standards of the world, and their hardness, and their love of material things. But as the world moves faster and faster away from God's standards, so do we. We're still the same distance from our culture. So, in a matter of like five or ten years, we Christians are where lost people were only a few years ago, accepting what we thought we would never accept, doing what we never thought we'd do, watching, listening to what we never thought would be part of our lives. But we can feel pretty good about it, because we're better than the folks around us. But see, the rate of speeding away from God is accelerating right now, and God says, "Hey, you continue where you are! Don't move! Stand still! Don't move any further." He's not saying detach yourself from people who need Him. No, you live in the world, but you don't live as part of it. You don't march to that drumbeat. You know, you feel like you're pretty good if you compare yourself to what the world is doing, or maybe even what most Christians are doing, and saying and accepting. But that's not the measure. We're to measure ourselves by the God-breathed scriptures of the Lord himself. If you turn the light of God's Word on your lifestyle, maybe you'll see how far you've drifted. You just can't move any more. We've got to get back to God's standards for love, for marriage, for honesty, for family, our relationships. Our environment is terminally polluted. We can't be like our environment. It's time to draw the line.

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘church'? There's confusion and a lack of clarity about what it means to be a church, but today's guest wants to re-present the fundamentals so that we're more responsible with our witness. Dr. Eric Mason is full of wisdom and he's got a new book out September 30 called Rebranding the Church: Restoring the Image of God's People in the World. Dr. Mason says we've over-corrected in a lot of ways as Christians, going from “holier than thou” to “holiness don't mean nothing.” We aren't committed to maturing in our faith. We don't have a sober-minded view of our own sin, of other people, or of Christian leadership. We're driven by humanistic individualism, thinking we can do this life apart from the community. So let's talk about getting back to the church God intended for us to be a part of. Should Christians seek mystical experiences as a way to grow closer to God? Pastor John looks at how Paul responded to his own visions.
What would it look like if the Church truly lived out the radical faith found in the Book of Acts? In this compelling message, Francis Chan urges believers to go beyond passively hearing God's word and begin living lives marked by deep repentance, bold obedience, and authentic transformation. He challenges the Church to break free from spiritual complacency and embrace a lifestyle that reflects the sacrificial, Spirit-empowered way of the early Christians. Chan paints a vision of a community where older generations uplift the young, resources are freely surrendered for Kingdom work, and God's supernatural provision follows fearless steps of faith. This is a passionate plea for revival rooted in humility, surrender, and a willingness to give up comfort and control. The result? A Church that is fully alive, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and unafraid to dive headfirst into the unknown for the sake of the Gospel.
What if the very thing you fear most—suffering—was actually the place God wanted to meet you most deeply? In this episode, Jerrad opens a new series through 1 Peter, a letter written to Christians facing intense persecution under Nero. With raw honesty and pastoral encouragement, he reminds us that suffering isn't a sign that God has abandoned us—it's often the very soil where our faith takes root.Drawing from Peter's opening words, Jerrad shares personal stories of walking with grieving families, parenting through pain, and clinging to identity in Christ when the world speaks lies. How should Christians react to political violence? In this deeply reflective episode, Mike Erre and Tim Stafford tackle hard questions about faith, politics, and the role of the church in society. With a week marked by tragedy, including the assassination of Charlie Kirk and a series of shootings, the hosts explore what a kingdom response looks like in these turbulent times. From condemning all acts of violence equally to affirming the dignity of every human being, they emphasize the need for a cruciformity—a life shaped by the values and teachings of Jesus. They discuss navigating cultural challenges with wisdom, rejecting the polarizing rage economy, and fostering a community rooted in justice, love, and mutual accountability. How can the church rise above partisan responses and embody the upside-down kingdom of God? What does it mean to lament, honor complex legacies, and act with hope amidst despair? This conversation challenges listeners to rethink their approach to cultural issues, faith, and the call to stand as exiles and strangers in today's society. This is far from the first time a leftist obsessed with trans-ideology has murdered conservative Christians. Kevin Dolan of the Exit Group joins me to discuss the rise of tranissaries as the foot soldiers for the Democratic Party and how the Trump Administration plans to respond. In "C is for Communion," TJ and Tory head out on an adventure to discover why Christians eat bread and drink from the cup at church. Along the way, they learn that communion is more than just a snack—it's a way God's people remember Jesus' death and resurrection, and celebrate that He is coming again! "An actor, he first mocked at Christians before Julian the Apostate. On one occasion, when he was mimicking the Christian mystery of Baptism, he was dipped into the water, pronouncing the words: 'In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.' When he emerged from the water, he cried out: 'Now I am a Christian!' Everyone thought that this was in jest, as always, but he held firm to it, stopped mocking Christians and finally suffered for Christ. He was beheaded in 361, and entered into the Kingdom of Christ." (Prologue) We rightly condemn worship that is purely external; but the life of St Porphyrius reminds us in a striking way that the 'externals' of the Faith have a power that can work to convert the heart of man. St Porphyrius used the words of Holy Baptism not only carelessly but mockingly, yet by God's grace he emerged from the waters truly renewed into Christ.
Gender identity, the origin of the universe, the sanctity of life, the cry for justice—the debate seems endless. If there ever was a time for Christians to understand and communicate God's truth about controversial and polarizing issues, it is now. Believers must develop convictions based on research, reason, and biblical truth. In this series, Avoiding Confusion, we will discover what the Bible has to say about the challenges we face and how we can communicate our convictions with love and respect.
