News:Five separate, yet related, one shots to mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the most excellent Star Wars: Rogue One film are coming from Marvel from May to September. Each issue is a one-and-done story that begins in May with Cassian Andor, followed by Jyn Erso, Saw Gerrera, Chirrut and Baze and finally, Darth Vader. This week, comic shop employees from all over gather in Glendale, California. Part three with Diana Schutz is where the long view comes into focus. She traces the beginnings of her friendship with Brian Michael Bendis , how that relationship started, why it endured, and what it says about spotting talent early and sticking with your people.From there, Diana talks about teaching at Portland State University, building a comics-focused class from the ground up, and eventually turning it over to Shelly Bond , another respected editorial voice. News:Mad Cave Studios has partnered with Lucasfilm Publishing to tell new, original stories set in the Star Wars galaxy via graphic novels via the former's Papercutz imprint that's aimed at middle-grade readers. The first two -- Star Wars: Smugglers and Scoundrels -- The Race for Jabba's Bounty and Star Wars: Tales From the Outer Rim -- The Legend of Beggar's Canyon -- are due out Sept. 15 and Oct. 13, respectively. Creative teams on the books are Cavan Scott and Christian Colbert and Greg Pak and Brent Schoonover.Marvel to debut Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge -- Echoes of the Empire #1 (of 5) on April 22. It's by Ethan Sacks, with art by Jethro Morales and Roi Mercado. Also coming in April and May? With pencils by Ed Benes, inks from Matt “Batt!” Banning, Sal Regla, and John Livesay, colors by Arif Prianto, and letters by Troy Peteri, this relaunch blends noir-style crime and supernatural warfare as Jackie is pulled into a brutal conflict where the lines between good and evil blur into darkness itself.  Meanwhile, Carmen Red Claw: Belly of the Beast #1 introduces a paranormal Western twist to the Hellboy Universe. We begin a new season, this time going over Hellboy comics. We start at the beginning, with Hellboy issue 1, or the beginning of the "Seed of Destruction" arc.  Hellboy is the creation of writer/artist Mike Mignola, who had been a regular artist for Marvel and DC. Then he started Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics in 1994, and true to the publisher's name -- it was a surprise runaway hit! We discuss how Mignola was a surprise artist to have a runaway success with a creator owned title. We talk about how superstar artist/writer John Byrne scripted these first few issues. We talk about the Hellboy movies (they look good, but are usually not too great!). And of course we talk about Mignola's amazing art. She debuts in the first issue of Fray (2001), a limited series in a shared universe with the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Living in the 23rd century, Melaka is a professional thief who learns that she is a Slayer destined to fight supernatural foes. She has a Slayer's physical powers, while her twin brother Harth inherited their prophetic dreams. Melaka discovers that Harth, whom she believed was dead, has become a vampire intent on bringing demons back to Earth's dimension. After stopping his plan, she remains a thief, but chooses to protect others as well. In Tales of the Slayers, she connects with her heritage by reading journals about past Slayers. Melaka reappears in the canonical comic book continuation of the television series, meeting the 21st century Slayer Buffy Summers in Season Eight and helping her defeat Harth in Season Twelve. Melaka was developed by Buffy's creator Joss Whedon and artist Karl Moline. Whedon originally planned to write a comic about a different Slayer, Faith, but instead opted for a new character in a futuristic setting to avoid interfering with Faith's potential storylines. Fray was Whedon's first time writing a comic, although Dark Horse Comics had previously published Buffy comics without his involvement. His only request was that Melaka should not be drawn in the sexualized manner common with female characters in superhero comics. Although Melaka is initially characterized as tough, she is also shown as caring and protective of others. Her relationships with Harth and her older sister Erin are key parts of Fray. Critics have had mixed reactions to Melaka in Fray. Some have praised her as a good protagonist, while others have criticized her relationships with other characters and capabilities as a strong female character. Moline's art has been the subject of critical discussion, as despite Whedon's intentions, some reviewers believed that the comic sexually objectifies Melaka. Academics have analyzed Melaka's character arc in Fray as an example of the hero's journey, with her last name also being examined based on its potential meanings.
