Career / Process You broke in around 2006, and you're now pushing close to two decades in comics. How has your approach to storytelling changed from those early years to now? You've been at this for nearly 20 years at this point. What's something you understand about comics today that you wish you knew when you started? You're writing across multiple major franchises right now. How do you shift your voice between something like Superman, Iron Man, and G.I. Joe? On top of all this, you wrote a story in Creepshow Vol. 4 #5 titled Artificial Ignorance. Was that a story you had in a drawer, or…how did that come to be? Superman / Superboy-Prime Superboy-Prime has always been a volatile character, but here he feels almost desperate to prove himself. How do you balance his edge with making him someone readers want to follow? With Manchester Black entering the picture, what excites you about putting those two characters in conflict specifically? Any Superman elements/tropes you want to touch? Iron Man You've said Tony Stark is one of your favorite characters. What's something about Tony that you feel hasn't been explored enough in past runs? Madame Masque and A.I.M. feel like they're operating at a higher level here. What makes them the right villains for this phase of the story? Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man Do you have a favorite Universal Monsters adaptation? Do you have any favorite werewolf stories? This feels like a very grounded, almost psychological take on the Wolf Man. What drew you to that angle? Is the when of this story important to the overall experience? What makes the Wolf Man a character worth revisiting right now? Rapid Fire Question Round (Stolen from Stephen Colbert so that a guest is “known”): Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've written before, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? By the early '90s, the slasher subgenre that had dominated horror in the '80s was already seen as on life support. But that didn't stop an upstart comic book company, formed in 1986 and already quite successful in the publishing world, from seeing the genre as potentially their ticket to join the movie big leagues. And so, four years before Scream would re-invent and re-popularize the slasher, Dark Horse Comics first tried to revive the genre with a more "traditional," if somewhat dark-comedy skewed, entry. And let's face it, who better to "revive" and "resuscitate" a genre than a doctor? Though, it's safe bet the maniacal doctor played by Larry Drake in this film is not one you'd want making a house call. "June is What the Doctor Ordered" continues, as we take a look at 1992's Doctor Giggles, the film that dares to ask, "just how many medical puns can you fit into one movie??" When Skybound announced M.A.S.K. would be joining the Energon Universe, fans immediately had questions. How would Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem fit alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Out this week, we sat down with writer Dan Watters and artist Pye Parr to discuss updating the classic property, designing its iconic vehicles, and why M.A.S.K. offers a unique perspective within the larger Energon Universe. We're running the full uncut interview, featuring even more discussion on cool cars, character dynamics, action sequences, and what readers can expect from the series moving forward. Dave: X-Men United #4 (Kris Anka Cover) Chris: Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day #2 (Phil Jimenez and Alex Sinclair Main) Dan Watters Pye Parr - MASK #1 out June 10th  M.A.S.K. has always had a unique place in Hasbro history, sitting somewhere between G.I. Joe, Transformers, and its own thing. What aspects of the original property were most important to preserve, and where did you see opportunities to reinvent it for the Energon Universe? Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? The original M.A.S.K. comic debuted in 1987 and had a very different view of global threats and military organizations. Were there any specific elements from that era that you deliberately updated to reflect modern anxieties and geopolitics? Fun question: If you could each claim one M.A.S.K. vehicle and mask from the entire franchise to use in real life for a week, which would you pick and what completely irresponsible thing would you do with it?

Dark Horse Comics seems to be in a death spiral. They fired the founder, Mike Richardson, and not long after announced they were closing all of their TFAW comic retail stores. Now the new boss says he wants to pivot into games and multimedia. This doesn't sound like a comic book publisher anymore. And the remaining staff want to unionize, likely because they know the end is near for them... Watch the podcast episodes on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify. On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Zack Kaplan to talk about two ambitious new projects that tap into some of today's biggest anxieties. First up is Only the Savage Are Left, Kaplan's new post-apocalyptic series with Stefano Raffaele, which imagines a world overrun by a virus that transforms people into monsters. During the conversation, Kaplan digs into the moral dilemmas at the heart of the series, the challenge of creating a new kind of monster apocalypse, and why the story's central romance is just as important as its horror. We also discuss The Smart Division, his upcoming AI-driven crime thriller with John Pearson, exploring how rapidly advancing technology, generational divides, and questions about institutional trust shaped the book's premise. What was the starting point for the virus concept, and how did you land on the idea that the “cure” is tied to killing another infected person? There's an early suggestion in the book that civilization didn't collapse because people failed to work together, but because they turned on each other. How much of this story is meant to reflect real-world anxieties about how fragile social order really is? You've described the idea that “civilized society is a failed experiment.” How does that philosophy shape Ryder's journey, especially as someone who begins the story outside that cycle of violence? Ryder starts off relatively sheltered, living behind a wall and seemingly untouched by the infection. What interested you about telling a story through a character who hasn't yet been forced to compromise his morality? The relationship that pulls Ryder out into the world feels central to the emotional core of the book. How did you approach balancing that love story with the brutality of the setting? Without spoiling too much, how does the virus actually work on a thematic level? Is it purely biological, or is it also meant to represent something more psychological or societal? As Ryder encounters other survivors and “monster-killers,” how do you approach defining who the real monsters are in this world? Shifting to The Smart Division, the idea of an AI being involved in a “perfect murder” is chillingly plausible. What kind of real-world advancements in AI or predictive tech inspired this story? The pairing of a Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent feels like a classic odd-couple dynamic. What makes that contrast especially interesting in a story about artificial intelligence and crime? Fun one: if you had to survive in the world of Only the Savage Are Left, what's your strategy in the first 24 hours… and are you making it out alive?

Dark Horse Comics is killing off its last physical stores -- the Things From Another World chain that literally funded the whole publisher back in '86 is getting the axe with the two Oregon spots in Milwaukie and Beaverton shutting June 30 and the flashy Universal CityWalk flagship following on September 30. Yeah after the e-comm site already went dark last year and founder Mike Richardson got booted as CEO they're "modernizing" by torching the brick-and-mortar roots that built the empire -- because nothing says "we love comics" like closing the actual shops while launching a games division and pretending this is progress. Dave: Absolute Martian Manhunter #12 (Werther Dell'Edera Card Stock Cover) Alex: Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1 Interview - Kenny Porter, Tyrell Cannon - Operation: Iron Coffin - July 8th - FOC June 1 Asking for an elevator pitch usually feels a bit cliche as an interviewer, but then Operation: Iron Coffin feels like it deserves it since it kind of has the perfect tight setup, care to share one? Earlier this year you mentioned to Chris Coplan Dracula isn't really a hero here, even if he's the protagonist. How important was it to frame this as a redemption story without ever sanding off the uglier truths about who Dracula is and what he's done?  Tyrell, you talked before about Dracula wrestling with the cost of his immortality and violence. Visually, how do you show that internal conflict in a character who often presents himself as cold, confident, and almost unstoppable? The first issue moves at a breakneck pace, but there are key flashbacks and supernatural moments that hint at something deeper under the grindhouse chaos. Kenny, how did you approach layering emotional depth into something that's also designed to feel like an adrenaline-fueled action movie? The Nazi train setup creates this perfect “one nightmare after another” structure where every car can introduce a new horror. Was the book always designed like a deadly gauntlet, or did the train concept evolve as you built the story? There's a fascinating tension between nature and science in the issue, especially with Dracula as this ancient evil crashing into engineered horrors and wartime experimentation. Was that thematic contrast something you wanted front and center from the beginning? Tyrell, one thing I loved was how physically dominant Dracula feels. He's ripping people apart, shrugging off attacks, and moving through scenes like a slasher villain unleashed. What were the biggest influences behind the choreography and sheer brutality of the action sequences? Hazel and Ivy immediately make a strong impression, especially because they seem to understand Dracula in ways others don't. What can you tease about their dynamic with him and why they're such dangerous opponents specifically for this version of Dracula? Kenny, the issue somehow makes Dracula sympathetic without asking readers to forget he's a monster. Were there any versions of Dracula in film, literature, or comics that influenced your take, or did you intentionally try to move away from previous interpretations? Fun/silly question: if your Dracula had a playlist blasting while he fought his way through the Nazi train, what songs or bands would absolutely be on it? Fun/silly question to cap things off: Dracula has now fought through a Nazi train like the star of the wildest action movie never made. If you could drop your version of Dracula into any other movie genre or setting next, where would you send him?

Comics writer Julio Anta joins Byron on the show to explore his new  Dark Horse Comics project, The Beast of Boriken. Part of  Tiny Onion's True Weird series, this tropical horror story uses the legend of the Chupacabra to address the complex history of colonization, activism, and trauma in Puerto Rico. Julio breaks down his collaboration with artist and Puerto Rica native Daniel Irizarri, and how they blended indigenous Taino culture weaving it with the legend of El Chupacabra and applying that formula to highlight modern-day political struggles. We also discuss his extensive background in the YA and middle-grade graphic novel markets including the June release of his second Hillside Valley graphic novel, Sol Goes For Goal!, and why he believes comics are a unique medium for what he calls Revolutionary Optimism. "The Chupacabra is a sort of manifestation of the anger and the trauma that the people of this island, from the time of the indigenous, have all felt." Julio's website Interview Breakdown * El Chupacabra Origins: Julio shares his childhood memories of El Vampiro de Moca and the 1995 sightings that popularized the cryptid. * A look at Loli, an activist radicalized by the aftermath of Hurricane Maria that is the primary protagonist in The Beast of Boriken. * How the comic mirrors real-world issues like the Esencia project and modern land grabs in Puerto Rico. * The importance of working with a Puerto Rican creative partner to ensure cultural accuracy from the landscapes to the botanica spiritual scenes in the book. * Why Julio develops comprehensive guides for schools and libraries to keep graphic novels relevant in classrooms.  The Beast of Boriken from Dark Horse Comics A thrilling new True Weird series from Tiny Onion by co-creators Julio Anta (Frontera; Sí, Se Puede) and Daniel Irizarri (Xino, Cementary Kids Don't Die) bringing el Chupacabra to life! In contemporary Puerto Rico, Loli Flores is a fierce activist fighting the overdevelopment of the island by outside investors. When a ground-breaking ceremony is violently interrupted by a supernatural force, Loli discovers that the stories of el Chupacabra are not just echoes from the past, but a brutal protector of generations extending back to the indigenous people of the island. As Loli uncovers the horrors firstand, el Chupacabra is on a parallel path with elemental destruction left in his wake. Follow Comic Book Yeti

The phone calls could be harsh. Daniel Freedman talked to a lot of shop owners. They told him anthologies didn't sell. He explained that Stimulus was not an anthology; it was a short story collection. They continued to express cynicism. He went ahead and assembled an astonishing array of stories, galloping through numerous tones and showcasing an awesome stable of collaborators. Stimulus flaunts the heights that this medium can soar, and obliterates house style tastes. It's on those LCS shelves now. Here's your chance to prove the glass-half-empty folks that audiences crave structures free from corporate designs. The comics in Stimulus should have your mouth watering. They're science fiction and fantasy slanted idea outburts illustrated by - hold your breath - Robert Sammelin (Kali), Tomm Coker (Black Monday Murders), Filya Bratukhin(Nature's Labyrinth), Amilcar Pina (Galactic), Dilraj Mann (Dalstron Monsterzz), Lorenzo Nuti (Dragonero/Conan), Arianna Farricella (College Apocalypse), Gavin Dias (PENTHOUSE Comics), Debbie Tsoi (Split Fiction), Stefano Realdini (Captain Gaia), Dan Morison (HELL-BENT), and Henrik Sahlstrom (Mirror's Edge: Exordium). This week, we had a blast chatting with Daniel Freedman about Stimulus. The short story collection spans more than ten years of his life, and each tale explores Freedman working himself out as well as the world he finds himself trapped in. We discuss the autobiographic nature of all storytelling, the power of a short story collection, and why comics allow him to create where other mediums do not. And before all that, our kid on the beat cub reporter, Brad, regales Lisa with his journey to the Lower East Side and the Jack Kirby Way street-naming ceremony on May 11th. He discusses what and who he saw on Essex Street and even offers audio recordings of Jack Kirby Way presenters Roy Schwartz, NYC Council Member Christopher Marte, Tom Brevoort, Paul Levitz, and Jim Steranko. The King of Comics finally getting his name on an NYC street is a historic moment. Let's all celebrate as comic book readers. Stimulus is out now in trade paperback from Dark Horse Comics. Manny and Christina conducted a pre-show discussion for an upcoming podcast interview about podcast guesting for lead generation. Christina confirmed she would be discussing how podcast publicity can bring in leads and customers, and mentioned she has a special gift offer of a six-part private podcast. They discussed technical setup preferences, with Christina requesting to remain on video, and agreed to address the question about defining publicity early in the interview. The show was set to begin with Manny introducing Christina and providing background information about her expertise in podcast publicity. Career Pivot to Podcast Marketing Christina shared her career journey, starting with PR work at Dark Horse Comics and later representing clients like Cirque du Soleil. She explained how becoming a mother led her to seek part-time work, which eventually led to freelance work and creating an online course for tourism PR. Christina described how she successfully pivoted her business strategy by pitching herself on relevant podcasts rather than following traditional marketing advice, which significantly improved her course sales and consulting opportunities. She launched her agency in 2020 after making this strategic shift to podcast marketing. Publicity Strategy for Business Growth Christina explained her definition of publicity as one of three marketing pillars, distinct from owned and paid media, and discussed how many online entrepreneurs overlook this approach due to lack of control. She described her client base as approximately 50-50 between men and women, with a focus on helping businesses expand beyond referral-only and paid advertising models by reaching clients where they already pay attention, such as on podcasts. Christina outlined her service process, which begins with a messaging session to clarify target audiences and key talking points, followed by ongoing podcast research and pitching, including a unique guarantee on bookings. Podcast PR Strategy and Guarantees Christina explained how her podcast PR agency guarantees clients will be booked on 24 podcasts per year, which is possible due to the abundance of podcast opportunities compared to traditional PR methods. She shared an example of working with a fiction incubator client, where she identified and successfully targeted doctors, lawyers, and therapists as additional audience segments beyond the client's initial target of writers and creative professionals. Podcast Strategy and Content Creation Christina discussed how her company typically helps clients explore new pathways and strategies for podcast appearances, often suggesting targeted approaches across different show types. She explained that while they don't use AI for pitching, they leverage it for research and content creation, particularly in generating multiple pieces of content from a single podcast interview. Christina noted that most podcast appearances result in both audio and video formats, with the video being particularly valuable for creating social media snippets and website content. Podcast Booking Services Discussion Christina discussed her podcast booking services, emphasizing her industry reputation, personalized service, and guarantee of show quality. She addressed Manny's concerns about comfort in video and audio environments, explaining that nervousness is common for first-time podcast guests and offering one-on-one coaching to help clients prepare. Christina encouraged listeners, especially introverts, to overcome their fears, noting that podcast interviews are essentially one-on-one conversations where guests can ask for re-recordings if needed. She provided contact information for potential clients to learn more about her services and connect with her on LinkedIn or Instagram. ·       Website: https://www.publicityxchristina.com/ ·       Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/publicityxchristina/ ·       Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/publicityxchristina  Link to your special gift offer: Christina's 6-Part Private Podcast Series! ·       Gift for the audience: http://www.publicitypodcast.com/   Manny@mannynowak.com https://covertleadershiptraining.com/ https://coachmanny.com/

The Iron Age of Comics

In what promises to be the snappiest episode of the podcast to date, we do a deep dive into the early years of Mike Allred's signature creation, Frank Einstein (sometimes but not exclusively also known as “Madman” in the comics themselves) at Tundra Publishing and Dark Horse Comics. Born of a desire to fuse existentialism with costumed adventure, Allred mixes ‘50s sci-fi movies, Silver Age comics, David Bowie lyrics, a dash of Mary Shelley and J.D. Salinger, and a whole lot of other influences and ingredients. With heart-on-its-sleeve earnestness tempered by gonzo absurdity, Madman asks the big questions: What makes us human? Is evil necessary to define good? Does God exist? But most importantly: Isn't it super-neat-o to have a girlfriend?Discussed in this episode: Madman #1-3, Madman Adventures #1-3, Madman Comics #1-10, plus material from Creatures of the Id #1 (recently and conveniently collected as Madman Omnibus Volume 1 from Dark Horse Comics)Man oh man, did you know you can back the podcast and get a monthly newsletter and Fifth Week Bonus episodes at patreon.com/ironageofcomics?

This week on the AIPT Comics Podcast, we interview cartoonist Stephanie Stalvey, diving deep into her graphic memoir Everything in Color. In the conversation, Stalvey opens up about growing up in an evangelical household, unpacking purity culture, and how motherhood reshaped her understanding of faith and identity. It's an honest, vulnerable discussion about turning lived experience into art, and why telling these stories can resonate far beyond one person's life. When you look back now, how do you understand that relationship differently? One of the most striking ideas in the book is the notion that “our bodies belong to the authority figure.” How did unpacking that belief shape the emotional core of this memoir? Everything in Color is deeply personal, especially in how it portrays your relationship with your husband and your child. What was it like sharing drafts with your husband as you were creating the book? Your journey raises big questions about faith, doubt, and identity. Did you find yourself arriving at answers while making the book, or is it more about learning to live with the questions? The book touches on major shared moments like 9/11 and the COVID lockdown. How did anchoring your personal story to these larger events help shape the narrative? There's a powerful shift in the book where love, especially through motherhood, reframes everything as sacred. When did that realization first begin to take hold for you? This is a massive and ambitious work. Was it always envisioned at this scale, and how long did it take you to bring it to life? The title Everything in Color feels like a mission statement for the book. At what point did you know that was the right way to describe this journey? The artwork blends intimacy with emotional weight throughout. How did you approach pairing your visual storytelling with such vulnerable subject matter?

Before Christian Ward joins us for a full-spoilers conversation about Event Horizon: Inferno, we get lost in a lengthy discussion about Stephen King's The Stand. We promise, however, that both stories tie nicely together and circle the vast concerns many of us are feeling in 2026. Event Horizon #1 is now available in comic book shops everywhere, thanks to IDW Publishing, and this week's podcast is a full-spoilers conversation all about it, digging deep into modern anxieties while also celebrating kick-ass monsters and scary horror movie violence. As the solicits say for this surprise comic book sequel, Event Horizon: Inferno is indeed Aliens meets Dante's Inferno. Get ready now. Set 200 years after the film and its comic book prequel, Event Horizon: Dark Descent, Event Horizon: Inferno introduces a new crew of desperate humans and demonic antagonists. Christian Ward and artist Rob Carey (plus, colorist Xenon Honchar and letterer Alex Ray) profoundly expand the Event Horizon universe, taking it to realms barely hinted at in the original nineties scare fest. As Ward mentions, he's giving Event Horizon the same treatment that Dark Horse Comics gave the Aliens and Predator franchises back in the nineties. If you remember those comics, damn, you're probably pretty darn excited at the notion. This week, we get ponderous about hell, heaven, and their servants. We dig into how this series demands expansion and the freedom in which the publisher and studio gave Ward and his collaborators. We consider how Event Horizon: Inferno reflects the world outside our window and what we can do to alleviate real-life dread. Buckle up, friends. We're all on this ship together. Again, Event Horizon #1 is out now from IDW Publishing. It's written by Christian Ward, illustrated by Rob Carey, colored by Xenon Honchar, and lettered by Alex Ray. Variant Cover (see art above) by Eamon Winkle. Continue this conversation with Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Blue Sky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsors Everyone loves to talk and debate about comics, but few people get to see what it's actually like behind the scenes. It's back in development, this time as an animated series at Netflix. That format might finally be the right fit to capture the scale and grit of Bendis and Oeming's world without compromise. At the same time, Bendis is crossing universes again. Also out Wednesday is the Marvel and DC crossover Spider-Man Superman, featuring a brand new story from Bendis and Sara Pichelli, where Miles Morales meets Superman.

You love to see it. Cartoonist Ethan Young (Dragon Path, Nanjing: The Burning City) places a huge bet on himself. He's reclaimed the rights to his main character from the graphic novel series The Battles of Bridget Lee, originally published at Dark Horse Comics, and planted her in a slightly altered landscape with a much more mature (i.e., violent) tone. The new comic is called Demon Run, and you have till April 3rd to make your orders for the first two issues on his website. The Battles of Bridget Lee: Invasion of Farfall first hit stands in 2016. Ethan Young has made many more comics since then, worked extensively in animation (including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), and significantly evolved his style. Why is he going back to Briget Lee? Why is she battling demons now and not alien invaders? Why is Demon Runfilled with gnarly, grisly action and not sanitized for the YA market? Most importantly, why is Ethan Young taking on the burden of self-publishing? All these questions and more are asked in this week's Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast. We've admired Ethan Young's comics for many years now. His appearance on the show is a long time coming, and we're excited to see him morph Bridget Lee into the Demon Run concept. You're damn right, we were two of the first to pre-order the comics via Young Illustrations. In addition to bookmarking his website, make sure you're following Ethan Young on Instagram and BlueSky. Dave: Iron Man #3 (Josemaria Casanovas) Alex: Superman #36 (Rod Reis) American Caper Interview: Producer & Additional Writing Lazlow, Editor Shelly Bond, and Finishes Chris Anderson 1. Dan Houser described American Caper as being fueled by his fascination with “hypocrites, sociopaths, political idiots, dysfunctional families, and violence.” When you first saw the concept for this story, what immediately stood out to you as something that felt especially relevant to the moment we're living in? 2. The series pulls together a wild mix of characters. A Mormon hitman, a gambling-addicted lawyer, escaped convicts in love, a billionaire playing cowboy. How did you approach balancing such a large ensemble so the story feels chaotic in a good way rather than overwhelming? 3. Verona, Wyoming feels like a pressure cooker where crime, politics, and personal drama all collide. What was important to you in making this small town feel believable while still allowing it to host such extreme characters and situations? 4. The book leans hard into satire, sometimes feeling like it's taking shots at every side of the political spectrum. Was there ever a concern about walking that line between satire that provokes thought and satire that might alienate readers? 5. The story's interconnected crimes and morally gray characters gave me flashes of crime epics like 100 Bullets, where one event ripples across many lives. When building a narrative this tangled, how do you keep track of the cause and effect between characters? 6. Lazlow, your background includes storytelling in massive open-world games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Did working on a comic require a different approach to pacing and structure compared to interactive storytelling? 7. (Fun question) If each of you had to survive in Verona, Wyoming for a week, which of these characters would you trust the most to have your back, and which one would you avoid at all costs?

Friends, we've got a special episode for you today. Comic book icons Wendy Pini and Richard Pini join the podcast for the first time, and they hang out for a lengthy, deep dive conversation into Elfquest's origins. Their romance began in the letters column of Silver Surfer #5 (1968), materialized as the result of a clandestine cross-country road trip, and solidified through creative collaboration, which would also challenge their partnership. Elfquest is nearly fifty years old, but it's as vibrant and relevant as ever. These comics are waiting for anyone already caught up in the Romantasy BookTok discourse. It's a profoundly philosophical work, bashing against humanity's great worries, ready to absorb those anxieties and potentially process them toward action. However, as much as you'll find yourself in Elfquest, you'll discover Wendy and Richard Pini, too. Like the best stories, it's autobiography masked as fiction. As new readers ourselves, we can guarantee Elfquest's contemporary grip. Chief Cutter's journey from the forest to the desert and the greater world beyond found us just when our lives were thrown in upheval. So, it was more than a pleasure to chat with Wendy Pini and Richard Pini about their great comic book saga, how it came to be, and why they continue as its shepherds. Over the last few years, Dark Horse Comics has gathered Elfquest: The Original Quest into four beautiful hardcover collections. Recently, they also published Elfquest: The Final Quest in a glorious hardcover omnibus, and Elfquest: The Hidden Years will receive a massive Gallery Edition Hardcover in July. Call your local comic shops asap. To stay abreast of everything Elfquest, make sure you're following them on their website, Instagram, and Bluesky. Zack Kaplan on Kill All Immortals

This week, comic shop employees from all over gather in Glendale, California. It's time for ComicsPRO, the annual event designed to “promote the progress and development of comic book retailers and improve the condition of the comic book industry.” It's one of our favorite times of the year as we eagerly sit by our computers waiting for announcements from publishers and the good word from our LCS pals. Sadly, we cannot be in person this year, but that doesn't mean we can't bring you exclusive information. Thanks to writer Zack Kaplan, who's on the ground at ComicsPRO, we're there by proxy. And he's dishing on his big announcement, extending his partnership with Dark Horse Comics, bringing us the final chapter in Kill All Immortals and two more new titles, Only The Savage Are Left and The Smart Division. Kill All Immortals is a nifty, nasty look at the boot standing on our necks: the billionaire class. The comic imagines a universe where various immortal clans have gobbled up control of the economy, but one is starting to crumble from within. Frey Asvald, daughter of Erik the Red, can no longer sit idly as her family consumes the planet. She wants to help us poor mortals, but in doing so, she exposes herself and others to tremendous violence. And can you really keep your hands clean when attempting global, capital G, Good? On this week's podcast, we discuss the state of comic book retail, a bizarre occurrence involving our local shops, and the anxiety of putting new books into readers' hands. Zack Kaplan gives us the skinny on Kill All Immortals as well as his two new titles at Dark Horse. We dig into our collective billionaire woes and consider one particular violent action committed by Frey in Kill All Immortals Volume One. Kill All Immortals is written by Zack Kaplan, illustrated by Fico Ossio, colored by Thiago Rocha, and lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Covers by Oliver Barrett (although the header image above is from variant cover artist Tula Lotay). Make sure you're following Zack Kaplan on BlueSky, Instagram, and his website.
