fWotD Episode 3154: Melaka Fray Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 23 December 2025, is Melaka Fray.Melaka Fray is a fictional character in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics published by Dark Horse Comics. She debuts in the first issue of Fray (2001), a limited series in a shared universe with the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Living in the 23rd century, Melaka is a professional thief who learns that she is a Slayer destined to fight supernatural foes. She has a Slayer's physical powers, while her twin brother Harth inherited their prophetic dreams. Melaka discovers that Harth, whom she believed was dead, has become a vampire intent on bringing demons back to Earth's dimension. After stopping his plan, she remains a thief, but chooses to protect others as well. In Tales of the Slayers, she connects with her heritage by reading journals about past Slayers. Melaka reappears in the canonical comic book continuation of the television series, meeting the 21st century Slayer Buffy Summers in Season Eight and helping her defeat Harth in Season Twelve. Melaka was developed by Buffy's creator Joss Whedon and artist Karl Moline. Whedon originally planned to write a comic about a different Slayer, Faith, but instead opted for a new character in a futuristic setting to avoid interfering with Faith's potential storylines. Fray was Whedon's first time writing a comic, although Dark Horse Comics had previously published Buffy comics without his involvement. His only request was that Melaka should not be drawn in the sexualized manner common with female characters in superhero comics. Although Melaka is initially characterized as tough, she is also shown as caring and protective of others. Her relationships with Harth and her older sister Erin are key parts of Fray. Critics have had mixed reactions to Melaka in Fray. Some have praised her as a good protagonist, while others have criticized her relationships with other characters and capabilities as a strong female character. Moline's art has been the subject of critical discussion, as despite Whedon's intentions, some reviewers believed that the comic sexually objectifies Melaka. Academics have analyzed Melaka's character arc in Fray as an example of the hero's journey, with her last name also being examined based on its potential meanings. The comic's by Benjamin Percy and Madibek Musabekov and Luis Guerrero.Issues 2-4 of Dark Horse Comics' The Bad Batch -- Rogue Agents have been pushed back by two weeks. No. 2 is due ouf Feb. 11, No. 3 on March 11 and No. 4 on April 8. No. 1 is still due out Dec. 31, a nice way to end 2025.

Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is teaming up with accomplished writer and artist Bruce Zick to explore an unchartered corner of the Hellboy universe in Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time, the debut issue is due out on October 22 from Dark Horse Comics! As regular listeners will know, I spent seven years living in the greater Puget Sound area and despite having lived in eight different states, it's one of two places that will always be home to me. There's something about small Washington State towns that can feel delightfully out of time and there's no greater contrast to them than the technology centric hub that is Seattle crowned by its futuristic Space Needle. It elicits a range of complex emotions as a former local that the visitor will never understand primary among them is a clash between modern advancement and the struggle of smaller coastal communities to hold onto their ways of life and cultural identities. This was my personal filter going into reading The Stoneshore Register, a delightful new graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and I have the perfect person to hang out to tell us all about it, first time guest G. If you're a comic book reader like we are, around the same time you learn about Batman and Robin, you're introduced to the medium's scariest boogeyman, Dr. Fredric Wertham. The publication of his Seduction of the Innocent in 1954 thrust Wertham into the popular consciousness, sparking hysteria and moral panic, hindering the medium's growth, and significantly harming the artists who worked within it. We assumed that Harold Schechter and Eric Powell's latest true crime collaboration would roast Wertham viciously, but Dr. Werthless is far too good a work to be an attack. Schechter and Powell reveal a much more complicated character, one who devoted years of his life to the Civil Rights movement and experienced tremendous horror while working with some of this nation's most notorious human monsters. Eric Powell, the creator of The Goon, knows a thing or two about this art form and how it can stir an intense reaction from “concerned citizens.” The era in which Wertham's book dominated boob tube conversation does not feel too far away from 2025, as politicians charge against graphic novels and libraries. The concerns around what stories can be told and who should be telling them indicate their power to influence and broaden our perspectives beyond the tiny universe within our eyeline. The desire to police narratives stems from fear and a need to control. If someone tells you not to read a book or watch a movie, you must read that book and watch that movie. As you'll hear, we had a wonderful time chatting with Harold Schechter and Eric Powell about Dr. Werthless. We discuss comic books' greatest boogeyman and all the complexities that brought him to write Seduction of the Innocent. We dig into this medium's power, the artists who were hurt by Werthem's attack, and how it all relates to what we're seeing around us today. Also, we may argue about what is and is not a comic book.
