Comics writer Julio Anta joins Byron on the show to explore his new  Dark Horse Comics project, The Beast of Boriken. Part of  Tiny Onion's True Weird series, this tropical horror story uses the legend of the Chupacabra to address the complex history of colonization, activism, and trauma in Puerto Rico. Julio breaks down his collaboration with artist and Puerto Rica native Daniel Irizarri, and how they blended indigenous Taino culture weaving it with the legend of El Chupacabra and applying that formula to highlight modern-day political struggles. Manny and Christina conducted a pre-show discussion for an upcoming podcast interview about podcast guesting for lead generation. Christina confirmed she would be discussing how podcast publicity can bring in leads and customers, and mentioned she has a special gift offer of a six-part private podcast. Publicity Strategy for Business Growth Christina explained her definition of publicity as one of three marketing pillars, distinct from owned and paid media, and discussed how many online entrepreneurs overlook this approach due to lack of control. She described her client base as approximately 50-50 between men and women, with a focus on helping businesses expand beyond referral-only and paid advertising models by reaching clients where they already pay attention, such as on podcasts. Christina outlined her service process, which begins with a messaging session to clarify target audiences and key talking points, followed by ongoing podcast research and pitching, including a unique guarantee on bookings. Podcast PR Strategy and Guarantees Christina explained how her podcast PR agency guarantees clients will be booked on 24 podcasts per year, which is possible due to the abundance of podcast opportunities compared to traditional PR methods. She explained that while they don't use AI for pitching, they leverage it for research and content creation, particularly in generating multiple pieces of content from a single podcast interview. Christina noted that most podcast appearances result in both audio and video formats, with the video being particularly valuable for creating social media snippets and website content. Podcast Booking Services Discussion Christina discussed her podcast booking services, emphasizing her industry reputation, personalized service, and guarantee of show quality. In part 1 of The Bendis Tapes, we've got a double shot of Brian Michael Bendis that hits both his past and his next big moves. First up, Powers is back with issue 8 from Dark Horse Comics, dropping Wednesday. And here's the kicker. Powers isn't just living on the page. It's back in development, this time as an animated series at Netflix. That format might finally be the right fit to capture the scale and grit of Bendis and Oeming's world without compromise.At the same time, Bendis is crossing universes again. Also out Wednesday is the Marvel and DC crossover Spider-Man Superman, featuring a brand new story from Bendis and Sara Pichelli, where Miles Morales meets Superman.

You love to see it. Cartoonist Ethan Young (Dragon Path, Nanjing: The Burning City) places a huge bet on himself. He's reclaimed the rights to his main character from the graphic novel series The Battles of Bridget Lee, originally published at Dark Horse Comics, and planted her in a slightly altered landscape with a much more mature (i.e., violent) tone. The new comic is called Demon Run, and you have till April 3rd to make your orders for the first two issues on his website. The Battles of Bridget Lee: Invasion of Farfall first hit stands in 2016. Ethan Young has made many more comics since then, worked extensively in animation (including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), and significantly evolved his style. Why is he going back to Briget Lee? Why is she battling demons now and not alien invaders? Why is Demon Runfilled with gnarly, grisly action and not sanitized for the YA market? Most importantly, why is Ethan Young taking on the burden of self-publishing? All these questions and more are asked in this week's Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast. The series pulls together a wild mix of characters. A Mormon hitman, a gambling-addicted lawyer, escaped convicts in love, a billionaire playing cowboy. How did you approach balancing such a large ensemble so the story feels chaotic in a good way rather than overwhelming? 3. Verona, Wyoming feels like a pressure cooker where crime, politics, and personal drama all collide. What was important to you in making this small town feel believable while still allowing it to host such extreme characters and situations? 4. The book leans hard into satire, sometimes feeling like it's taking shots at every side of the political spectrum. Was there ever a concern about walking that line between satire that provokes thought and satire that might alienate readers? 5. The story's interconnected crimes and morally gray characters gave me flashes of crime epics like 100 Bullets, where one event ripples across many lives. When building a narrative this tangled, how do you keep track of the cause and effect between characters? 6. Look what Wednesday has given you! A brand-spankin' new episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! It's going to be a great day, as new comics are out today and you have Cullen, Jerry, and John to talk nerdy with for the next hour. The big book of the week has to have been DC KO #5, wrapping up the battle between Luthor Superman and Darkseid. And as much as this was an ending to the mini-series, it serves as a teaser for what DC Comics has planned for the rest of 2026. Shocking news out of the Pacific Northwest this week, as Mike Richardson was let go from Dark Horse Comics. While, on the face of it, that was a shock to many people in the industry, reading between the lines shows that this move was bound to happen. We just were not expecting it this week in this manner. Did you see the trailer for Lanterns coming later this year on HBO? We cannot wait to hear Kyle Chandler's southern drawl reciting the Green Lantern oath. News:Five separate, yet related, one shots to mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the most excellent Star Wars: Rogue One film are coming from Marvel from May to September. Each issue is a one-and-done story that begins in May with Cassian Andor, followed by Jyn Erso, Saw Gerrera, Chirrut and Baze and finally, Darth Vader. Part three with Diana Schutz is where the long view comes into focus. She traces the beginnings of her friendship with Brian Michael Bendis , how that relationship started, why it endured, and what it says about spotting talent early and sticking with your people.From there, Diana talks about teaching at Portland State University, building a comics-focused class from the ground up, and eventually turning it over to Shelly Bond , another respected editorial voice. It's about mentorship, paying it forward, and making sure the next wave understands both the craft and the business.Then she walks through her start at Dark Horse Comics in its early days , when the company was still defining itself and the independent boom was taking shape. Diana reflects on her enduring friendship with Bob Schreck after their divorce, proof that professional respect and personal history don't have to collapse when relationships change. And finally, she discusses joining the judges committee for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Hall of Fame , helping shape how the medium honors its own history. It's a fitting role for someone who has spent decades fighting for creators and preserving the integrity of the craft.

News:Mad Cave Studios has partnered with Lucasfilm Publishing to tell new, original stories set in the Star Wars galaxy via graphic novels via the former's Papercutz imprint that's aimed at middle-grade readers. The first two -- Star Wars: Smugglers and Scoundrels -- The Race for Jabba's Bounty and Star Wars: Tales From the Outer Rim -- The Legend of Beggar's Canyon -- are due out Sept. 15 and Oct. 13, respectively. Creative teams on the books are Cavan Scott and Christian Colbert and Greg Pak and Brent Schoonover.Marvel to debut Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge -- Echoes of the Empire #1 (of 5) on April 22. It's by Ethan Sacks, with art by Jethro Morales and Roi Mercado. Also coming in April and May? We begin a new season, this time going over Hellboy comics. We start at the beginning, with Hellboy issue 1, or the beginning of the "Seed of Destruction" arc.  Hellboy is the creation of writer/artist Mike Mignola, who had been a regular artist for Marvel and DC. Then he started Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics in 1994, and true to the publisher's name -- it was a surprise runaway hit! We discuss how Mignola was a surprise artist to have a runaway success with a creator owned title. We talk about how superstar artist/writer John Byrne scripted these first few issues. We talk about the Hellboy movies (they look good, but are usually not too great!). And of course we talk about Mignola's amazing art.
