On his way to Damascus, a light from heaven stops him. He hears Jesus speaking, asking why Saul is persecuting Him. Blinded, Saul is led into the city to wait for instructions. Meanwhile, God instructs Ananias to visit Saul and restore his sight. Despite his fear, Ananias obeys. Saul learns that he will become an apostle to the Gentiles. After regaining his sight, he is immediately baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. Saul begins to preach boldly, prompting the Jews to seek to kill him. He escapes to Jerusalem, where Barnabas vouches for him. The chapter also recounts Peter healing Aeneas and raising Tabitha from the dead, demonstrating God's power and inspiring many new believers in Jesus. Saul's story highlights the transformative power of Jesus Christ. His conversion shows that no one is beyond the call of the gospel. God often uses individuals like Ananias to fulfill His mission. Some of the greatest passion for evangelism comes from new converts. We can learn a great deal from them. Like Barnabas, we should defend and support new believers to help God's people embrace them. Lastly, Tabitha was deeply missed and cherished for her charitable spirit. We should seek to be cherished servants among God's people, known for “deeds of kindness and charity.” Glorious Father, we praise Your patience and relentless pursuit of sinners. You humbled and restored Saul, as You have done with us. We are living testaments to Your grace and love. Teach us to live with gratitude and to obey Your call to share Jesus with others, even when it feels risky or uncertain. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2634 – New Testament Orientation – The Jesus of History Putnam Church Message – 05/18/2025 Sermon Series: New Testament Orientation Message 4: The Jesus of History Last week, we returned to the intertestamental period between the Old and New Testaments and explored The Culture and Cosmology of the Intertestamental Period. Our core verses for last week were Galatians 3:26-29. Verse 28 summarizes the message. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. Today, we will explore how Jesus appears in history outside the Bible. Our core verses for today are: Matthew 25:31-36 “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. The Jesus of History (From the Perspective of Ancient Israelites and Early Christians): For generations, the whispers of the prophets had echoed in the synagogues and homes, foretelling the coming of the Messiah, the Anointed One who would restore the fortunes of Israel. They clung tightly to these promises during times of both fleeting autonomy and prolonged subjugation under foreign powers. The anticipation was a constant hum beneath the surface of the Israelites daily lives, a yearning for the promised deliverer. Yet, when Jesus of Nazareth finally appeared, his presence and his message often defied the very expectations they had nurtured for centuries. Jesus Followers Are Told to: “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus expects you, as a Jesus Follower, to go and to make Disciples while sharing God's Word through your personal relationships! Therefore, you should share the Word of the Lord with people that you know. However, when you discuss the Gospel with those you know well, you are often inhibited and constrained. Paul tells you, in Romans 1:16, that you should never be ashamed to communicate the Gospel: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.". When you communicate stories of your life situations and experiences with the people you know and with whom you have relationships, they will ask you questions. From these conversational questions will come a natural discourse about your faith and relationship with Jesus in your life because you are a Jesus Follower. In Mark 5:19-20, Jesus was very explicit that we are to go to our “friends” and tell them of Jesus' good news: “'Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.' And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.". Jesus, in Luke 9:26, also, cautioned us about being ashamed or constrained in communicating His Word: “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.". Daily Dose of Hope May 20, 2025 Day 2 of Week 8 Scripture – Matthew 2 Prayer: Dear God, You are amazing! How awesome it is that you who created all things are also so intimately involved in our lives. We give you glory and praise for who you are. We are so thankful for your love. We want to know you more. We want and need to hear your voice. Help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you. In these next few moments of silence, Lord, hear our prayers... In Your Name, Amen. Welcome back, friends, to the Daily Dose of Hope, a devotional and podcast connected to the Bible reading plan at New Hope Church in Brandon, FL. Today, we are digging into Matthew 2. This is pretty familiar Scripture to many of us. Let's try to see it with fresh eyes. The text begins with foreign Magi visiting King Herod. These men are an interesting and mysterious group. We don't really know much about the magi who come seeking Jesus from eastern lands. Some translations call them wise men or kings. Matthew doesn't include a lot of details. We have no idea how many there actually were (despite the popular carol, Scripture does not say there were just three of them). Like the shepherds, the magi seem an unlikely group to seek out and worship Jesus. They were pagans, gentiles, involved in the occult, and yet they knew there was something more. They were searching for something more. So these magi embark on a long journey, carrying expensive gifts worthy of a king, eager to pay homage. Their efforts lead them to an encounter far beyond their expectations. Unlike an earthly king who would have been found in a palace, the magi are led to what we can probably assume is a modest home of a Jewish family and it's there that they find Jesus with his mother and Scripture says they bow down and worship him. Maybe it wasn't what they expected but they see God's hand in it nonetheless and worship the one they know to be the Messiah, the savior of the world. They were outsiders but they recognized the Messiah when so many insiders failed to do so. Up until now, it all sounds great, right? But there is another character in this story. His name is Herod the Great. The Herod family ruled over the holy land both before and after the time of Christ, they were somewhat like puppet kings, put in place by the Romans to keep order. And they don't have a great reputation at all. They were, for the most part, insecure and power-hungry. One reason I don't think it's accurate to refer to the magi as wise men is because they did one thing that was really unwise. They go straight to King Herod, “So where is the NEW king? Where is the one who has been named king of the Jews?” Keep in mind, Herod the Great considered himself to be king of the Jews. The man is insecure and vicious so he tries to trick the magi into divulging Jesus' location. But no amount of earthly power can get Herod what he wants. The magi are warned in a dream to not return to Herod. And this angers him more. Herod was both feared and hated. The Jewish historian Josephus painted a picture of Herod as a suspicious and cruel client king, with a history of killing anyone whom he saw as a threat, including three sons and his wife. So even though the magi remind Herod of Micah's prophecy that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), his response was not to pay homage but to destroy the newborn king. In Matthew 2:16, we read that Herod decides to take matters into his own hands and kill all the baby boys who might be in the age range of Jesus, When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Truly dark and horrific. The extent to which human beings will go to gain power surely demonstrates the brokenness of our world. Then and now. But through all of this, Jesus is saved. The baby's family is warned in a dream and they head down to Egypt for a period of time to keep the boy safe from Herod before they come back to Israel and settle in Nazareth. Because God's purposes will prevail. God had promised long, long ago to send a Savior for his people and there is nothing that could get in the way. Listen to this prophecy from in Isaiah 9:6-7, spoken 700 years before the birth of Jesus, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. It's like God was saying “I'm going to send someone who will restore the people of Israel to me. This person will be a light to the Gentiles, and will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth AND it will be obvious once more that your God reigns.” No power-hungry king could mess that up as hard as he tried. No earthly power could thwart God's plan of redemption for his people. It's true that bad things to happen. God allows human beings free will and that is too often used for evil. But that doesn't mean God isn't involved, it doesn't mean he isn't invested, God can and has orchestrated, changed, and/or stopped the plans of all kinds of people to get done what needs to get done. God has been working, in his time, over the course of thousands of years, to achieve his bigger purpose. And what was the bigger purpose? God's mission from the beginning was to redeem his world. He did this through Jesus. That little baby that the wise men knelt down and worshiped, that child that Herod felt so threatened by --- that child would grow to become the Savior of the world. He would bring sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed, he would proclaim good news to the poor. He would preach the Kingdom of God and show the world a different way of living, ultimately giving up his own life voluntarily on a Roman cross. In doing so, he became the final sacrifice for sin, providing a way for you and me and all people to be redeemed. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, our sins can be forgiven and we can walk hand in hand with a holy God. Because of Jesus, nothing separates us from God. And then, three days after he died, he was resurrected, defeating evil and death and demonstrating to the world who HE is. He is, after all, God. Jesus is the Lord. Jesus is LORD of all. Paul writes this in Colossians 1:15-20, The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Jesus is above all things. Jesus is Lord. And over the course of 2000 years, rulers and kings and dictators and autocrats have tried to wipe out his influence. They have misused his teachings, they have twisted the Gospel. Like Herod, they have done all kinds of things to either try to eliminate the influence of Jesus or to use the Gospel for their own deceitful purposes. And at times, it's been ugly and violent and really sad. But this is TRUTH: God will ensure that his purposes prevail. Yes, in our sinful and broken world, all kinds of horrors will occur. Vladimir Putin will think he's invincible. Kim Jong Un will declare himself supreme ruler. American politicians will think themselves unshakable. You and I will experience heartbreak, loss, and illness. And yet, Jesus is still Lord of all. God is still working in our lives, God is still present with us in the middle of the mess, and Jesus is still in the business of transforming lives. Friends, Jesus is on the throne, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The rulers of the world may oppose him but they are ultimately answerable to him. Because he will come again. I'll stop there for now. But I do have to ask this question: Is Jesus Lord of your life? More tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Vicki
Tuesday, 20 May 2025 If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. Matthew 10:13 “And indeed, if the house, it should be worthy, it came – your peace – upon it. And if not it should be worthy, your peace, it returns to you” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus said, “And entering into the house, you greet it.” He now continues, saying, “And indeed, if the house, it should be worthy.” The order at first seems off. How can they greet a worthy house that is found later to be unworthy? The meaning is found in the greeting as stated by the Jews mentioned in the previous commentary, Shalom lekha, “Peace to you.” This was not something that was stated after the household was determined worthy. It is what any person in the Middle East would do upon entering any house, meeting any stranger on the way, or even walking into a restaurant where someone is immediately greeted. It is as common as someone in America coming to a house and saying “Good afternoon.” For example, in Arabic nations, when greeting another, it is standard to say, As-salamu alaikum, “Peace be upon you.” It is essentially the same thought as the Hebrew just mentioned. In other words, Jesus is telling His disciples to walk into a house with the standard greeting for peace. It is at this time that “if the house, it should be worthy” applies. Only after that, He says, “it came – your peace – upon it.” Here, the word eiréné, peace, is introduced. It signifies peace both literally and figuratively, such as quietness, rest, restoration, etc. The word is derived from eiró, to join. Thus, one can get the sense that a state of harmony has been enjoined. The apostles are to send forth their peace, looking for it to be enjoined with the household. However, only after explaining their intent and purpose for being in town would that peace actually be realized or denied. If so, their peace would truly rest upon the house. On the other hand, “And if not it should be worthy, your peace, it returns to you.” Another new word is seen here, epistrephó, to turn, return, convert, etc. It is derived from epi, upon, and strephó, to turn or return. Thus, it bears much the same meaning as strephó, but it is accentuated. Jesus' meaning here is that the standard greeting for peace should always be extended, but it may not always apply. When it is extended and the house is one of peace towards their message, then their peace, meaning a state of harmony with the owners, will exist. However, if the opposite is true, those in the house have set themselves against the gospel, and there will be no peace between them. As such, they are to depart from that house. Jesus will continue to explain just what this state of lacking harmony means for them in the coming verses. Life application: The false teaching that Christians must forgive everybody all the time for all offenses against them has been so heavily pushed within the church that Christians face one of two general states in their existence for those who actually care about this particular doctrine. The first is a group of neurotic people who stand frustrated at the fact that they are constantly abused by others with no foreseeable relief or remedy. Their state of salvation becomes one of works, ever attempting to merit what has already been given to them through accepting Jesus. In other words, they are told they are saved by grace through faith in Christ. They accept this message and are saved. However, they are also told that if you don't forgive others, you will not be forgiven. Thus, there are contradictory thoughts tearing at the soul of the poor believer. The only possible escape is to follow a path of works to continue to be saved, to merit God's favor, and to retain their salvation. It is an unhealthy, unbalanced, and unbiblical approach to one's walk with the Lord. It is an impossible dilemma that ruins their joy in Christ. The second state is a group of people who claim they forgive everyone, are at peace with all people, and are actually better than all other Christians because they are able to do what they know no one can actually do. The resulting arrogance in such people is, at times, astonishing. The reason they can live in this state, knowing it is not true, is that they don't actually care about discovering the truth of how to resolve the dilemma. Instead, like anyone who has the upper hand over others, they feel they have the right to other's respect and adoration. They are the super Christians worthy of other's emulation. They hold the secret and thus have implicit control over those who are inferior in their walk with the Lord, or so they think. The words of Jesus in these verses clearly demonstrate that there are times when people are at odds with one another and that no peace exists between the two. There is no forgiveness of the offense against the gospel to be obtained. That will be seen in the next two verses. It is important for saved believers to know and remember that forgiveness in Scripture is never unconditional. If it were, it would mean the believer has a higher standard to meet than God has set forth in Christ. Jesus' sacrifice is offered to all. However, it is conditional upon belief in what the cross, burial, and resurrection mean. Without belief, no person will be saved. Thus, there are conditions for forgiveness, even from God's position. To teach that all believers must forgive all people all the time without meeting certain standards is completely unbiblical, it is opposed to the gospel message, and it produces insecure or arrogant attitudes that are damaging to a sound walk with the Lord. Lord God, help us to take all things in their proper context and to apply them appropriately. Taking verses out of the intended context can only damage our doctrine and a proper walk with You. So, keep reminding us to carefully consider and apply Your wonderful word to our lives. Amen.

He emphasizes God's promise of land to Abraham. He then discusses the jealousy of Joseph's brothers, highlighting how God protected him and led the Jews to Egypt. Stephen then recounts the story of Moses and explains how he saved the people despite their repeated obstinance. God was present and active all throughout Israel's history. Stephen notes that God is still working through the Holy Spirit, yet the Jews remain rebellious, even murdering “the Righteous One.” This infuriates the crowd, leading them to stone Stephen to death. Finally, the glory of Jesus resonates through Stephen's words and character. Like Stephen, we should know God's story and emulate Jesus as we share it. He honors Christ by reciting Jesus' words on the cross, even unto his dying breath. Great Father, Your involvement with Your people has sustained them for generations. Men and women of faith stood firm for You, even when Your own people opposed them. Help us recognize that You are with us. Open our hearts to the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. Many resist Him, some even in a misguided attempt at faith. Please guide us by Your Spirit to know and teach the truth. If defending Your Name costs our lives, grant us the courage of Stephen to emulate Jesus and die with unwavering faith, heavenly hope, and love, even for our enemies. Legalists and mystics debate, and radical groups exist at the same time as Muslim feminists who advocate new interpretations of the Koran. This is the core argument of my guest John Tolan's new book Islam: A New History, from Muhammad to the Present. Ranging from new historical research on the first decades of the origins of the Muslim faith, he moves across centuries and millennia capturing the diversity and debate which characterized the history of the youngest of the three great monotheistic religions. Monday, 19 May 2025 And when you go into a household, greet it. Matthew 10:12 “And entering into the house, you greet it” (CG). The previous verse noted that when a worthy house is found, the apostles were to stay there until they left. Jesus continues with, “And entering.” Being a participle, the intent is “at the time you enter,” or “while you are entering.” He continues with “into the house.” The KJV and NKJV say “a house.” This is incorrect. They were to go to houses until they found a worthy one. They were not required to react positively to those in an unworthy house. There is a reason for this, which will be seen in the next verses. For now, the verse finishes with the words, “you greet it.” This would be the standard Jewish greeting of Shalom lekha, “Peace to you.” These are the Hebrew words Jesus would have used, as is recorded in John 19 – “Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.' 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.'” John 19:19-21 Concerning such visits as the church later expanded, Vincent's Word Studies says – “The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles," a tract discovered in 1873 in the library of the monastery of the Most Holy Sepulchre at Constantinople, by Bryennios, Metropolitan of Nicomedia, is assigned to the date of 120 a.d., and by some scholars is placed as early as 100 a.d. It is addressed to Gentile Christians, and is designed to give them practical instruction in the Christian life, according to the teachings of the twelve apostles and of the Lord himself. In the eleventh chapter we read as follows: "And every apostle who cometh to you, let him be received as the Lord; but he shall not remain except for one day; if, however, there be need, then the next day; but if he remain three days, he is a false prophet. But when the apostle departeth, let him take nothing except bread enough till he lodge again, but if he ask money, he is a false prophet." And again (ch. 8): "Likewise a true teacher, he also is worthy like the workman, of his support. Every first-fruit, then, of the products of wine-press and threshing-floor, of oxen and sheep, thou shalt take and give to the prophets, for they are your high-priests....If thou makest a baking of bread, take the first of it and give according to the commandment. In like manner, when thou openest a jar of wine or oil, take the first of it and give to the prophets; and of money and clothing, and every possession, take the first, as may seem right to thee, and give according to the commandment.” Life application: Whether the tract noted by Vincent's Word Studies is accurate or not, it is an ancient witness to the fact that people were going around evangelizing. As noted in the previous commentary, people will occasionally come spreading a message or asking for assistance who might not have the best intent for the church. Therefore, wisdom in dealing with others is necessary. And more, there is no longer a need for wondering if someone is a false prophet based on whether they remain for a certain amount of time or not. The Bible has been compiled and its instructions are set. To determine if someone is teaching falsities, all we need to do is refer to Scripture and find out what it says. This shouldn't be something we need to do when someone shows up. Rather, it should be something we are doing daily. That way, we will know what the word says and where to find it. When we are presented with false teachings, all we will need to do is go to the Word to ensure we are remembering properly. Once we have determined they are spreading a false message, we can kick them out to the street curb and tell them to beat it. There is no point trying to convince heretics, charlatans, or grifters that they should turn from their ways. They already know this. What they need is a dose of being evicted from the presence of the church. That will be much more effective in hopefully waking them up from their ways than all the words we could utter. Sometimes, a tough example is what is needed to get people to change. Jesus overturned the tables at the temple for a reason. Let us not be timid in dealing with false teachers. Lord God, please give us wisdom and fortitude to stand against false teachers. May we be bold in proclaiming what is true, and may we be intolerant of those who proclaim otherwise. May we not get into back-and-forth argumentation when decisive action is needed. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

Jesus is able to set you free Acts 16:20-34 KJV - 0 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
OPENING: Just read the scripture Acts 12:1-19 It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. I can't even begin to imagine how traumatic this was for the believers. -Stephen had been murdered, Paul had started persecuting the church. Now you have James, the brother of John put to death with a sword. this is the John that you read his letters in the scripture… That guy's brother tragically murdered, and for what, their belief in the resurrection of the dead through Jesus. 3 When he [Herod] saw that this [killing James] met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. This is passover. It's the same time of year that Herod had allowed the Romans to put Jesus to death. He's now trying to garner popularity with the Jews by putting the leaders of Christianity to death. He's already murdered James - now Peter… Can I ask you a question? What do you do if this is you? What do you do when you see tragedy on a major level? What do you do when you've done everything right and you still have a child who rebels and walks away from the Lord? Or you lived a good God honoring life and just got diagnosed with early stages of dementia.. or there is some other major tragedy that seems impossible to overcome? What do you do? b Today, I want to show you what the early church did when they were facing terrifying circumstances. See, the story is going to get wild, Peter's going to be in prison guarded by four squads of four soldiers each - this is major - they are afraid someone might try something. Listen to vs 5 though 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. Did you notice what the church did? The church gathered and prayed. They sought God on Peter's behalf and I want you to listen to the results… 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. 8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. 11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.” Peter thinks he's hallucinating or having a vision and doesn't realize it's really happening. This wasn't what he was expecting. And who would? Who would expect that God was going to send angels to break the chains and walk him out of prison? But that's what God did. 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” I love this. Rhoda like opens the door sees Peter and slams it in his face and runs back to tell everyone else kind of thing. He's left standing there like… hmm de dum… She goes to tell everyone else and they can't believe it… I love it, they were praying but were not ready for what God was going to do. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: I need to be honest with you guys. The past couple of weeks have been some of the hardest I've had in ministry. Lots going on and lots to be thinking about very quickly as a church. We've faced some pretty big hurdles and are continuing to figure out how to overcome them. But I want to tell you, what has been the most encouraging part has been to see how the Body of Christ still comes together to pray. Our church a week and a half ago found out that PCA was going to be closing their doors. That's a really big deal for everyone in this room whether you realize it or not. It's a big deal because our about 20% of our churches budget comes from the rental income from the space the school was renting. but what I've seen is people coming together to pray - you saw that video earlier. I've had so many people come together and tell me they are praying, their connect group is praying. I mean it's been a pretty amazing time in the midst of some hard stuff to see the people of God come together and seek God.. Here's what I want to tell you that has been on my mind through all of this. We don't have to wait for tragedy to seek God like this. b We can seek Him with all our heart, like our life depends on it, every day of the week… The church is at her best during tragedy because the Church knows who holds the world in His hands and we trust Him… This is not to say God is always going to fix everything. A few chapters earlier in the book of Acts Stephen is stoned to death and God doesn't stop it. But where God is, is He is with Stephen. See, what I am certain of is that God does not leave us alone, there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. I want to close by reading one more passage to you to encourage you and then I want to ask us to do something a little crazy. I want to ask you to gather with a few people around you and pray out loud. I will give you a few things to pray for as Anthony plays guitar quietly and for you to pray over these things as the church coming together. Romans 8:35-39 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. 8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. 11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.” 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” 15 “You're out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place. 18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.

Acts 13:13-43 13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem, 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. What are you known for? Your wit, appearance, talent, or success? Perhaps you're known for your sharp tongue or short fuse. Or maybe it's for your biblical knowledge and wisdom. But none of these things (not even the positive ones) are mentioned by Paul as noteworthy. Rather, in Philippians 4:5, he says, “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”Gentleness. The Greek word is hard to translate but it implies “generosity, goodwill, magnanimity, bigheartedness, forbearance, mercy toward the failures of others, charity toward the faults of others.”One way to understand what gentleness looks like is to look at the life of Jesus. In Luke 7, we see three examples of gentleness in action. The first encounter is with a Roman centurion – a gentile - who asks Jesus to heal his servant. The second encounter occurs when Jesus' journey is interrupted by a funeral procession. A local widow had lost her only son. The third encounter was potentially the most embarrassing for Jesus. While seated at a dinner in the home of a prominent citizen, a woman, known to be a prostitute, comes in, sits next to Jesus, and bursts out crying.How did Jesus handle each of these encounters? And what can we learn about how to make gentleness known to all?Your gentleness becomes evident when you aren't too narrow to engage those who are different from you.Jews would never associate with Gentiles, but Jesus went out of His way to help Roman soldier. Your gentleness becomes evident when you aren't too important to reach out to those who are below you.It wasn't even the “important” person who needed help. It was a servant. Yet Jesus healed him. To be gentle is to love and serve the “little” people.Your gentleness becomes evident when you aren't in too much of a hurry to care about those who have needs beyond you.When Jesus saw the grieving widow, His “heart went out to her.” See, people mattered more to Jesus than His schedule. In fact, the needs of people were not seen as interruptions in His schedule, but part of His schedule. So, Jesus stopped, spoke to the woman and raised her son from the dead.Your gentleness becomes evident when you aren't too proud to embrace those who might be embarrassing to you.No one was too low in the social pecking order for Jesus to associate with. In fact, knowing how seldom such people were cared for, Jesus seemed to intentionally seek out the last, the least, and the lost, unconcerned about what it did to His reputation.What do you do when you encounter those whose mere proximity to you would be embarrassing?None of these people to whom Jesus expressed gentleness ever served to advance His position. But His action certainly enhanced His profile. People were filled with awe and praised God. Moreover, a servant, a widow, and a prostitute were transformed. I ask you again: What are you known for? Worship does not come easily or naturally. For many of us, we have to be very intentional about worship. Amazingly, even David had times when he needed to remind himself of why to worship the Lord. Today we'll study Psalm 103 and look at these crucial reasons we can always worship our glorious Lord. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast explained that Psalm 103 is a “Call to worship” the Lord. What does this mean and why do we need to be summoned to worship Him? 2. What does the phrase “Bless the Lord” mean in verse 1? What is David calling in himself to worship the Lord? What kinds of blessings have we received in verse 5? 3. In verse 2, why does true worship require us to remember how God has benefited us? How has God benefited you? In what way should this lead you to worship Him more? 4. What does verse 3, why does receiving “pardon” from God cause us to worship Him? In what way is pardoning part of our healing? Ultimately, when and where we will be healed? 5. In verses 6 & 7, how can we worship God for His deliverance of the Jews? Why? How does He show us a similar work of deliverance? 6. How is God gracious to us in verse 8? How is His graciousness evident in verse 9? 7. How does verse 10 show us God's mercy and grace? What does this show us about God's attitude towards us? 8. How do verses 12 & 13 show us God's love? How do the terms east and west show us God's infinite grace and forgiveness? 9. In verses 17 & 18, who is this forgiveness for? Why? How do we enter this relationship with the Lord? 10. In verses 19 - 22, who are we joining with when we worship the Lord? How might this reality affect your private and public worship? How does this help us know that our future will always be oriented to the Lord in worship? 11. Loaay Wattad is a lecturer, translator, and editor focused on children's and adolescent literature in Arabic and also in Hebrew. It is a gift to experience the friendship between them, as well as the struggle. This, and the passionate interaction with others in the room that follows, holds complexity and nuance and persistent humanity that news from this part of the world rarely conveys. We were brought together by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute.Looay Wattad is a Palestinian lecturer, researcher, translator, and editor and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology and the School of Cultural Studies at Tel Aviv University. He is a member of the Maktoob translators' circle, a group that translates works of literature from Arabic to Hebrew.
