On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, Abdul El-Sayed, who is running for the Democratic nomination for Senate from Michigan, is a very sick person, full of hate. He is on record supporting driver's licenses for illegals, opposing cooperation with ICE, and says America was founded on slavery. Slavery actually existed all over the world when America was founded: Black tribes sold other Africans to Europeans. Slavery exists today in Africa - where Islamists kill and capture Christians in Nigeria -- and in the Middle East. Women are treated horribly in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan -- all Islamic areas. America fought a Civil War and amended our Constitution to rid this country of slavery. Nirvana has never existed anywhere, but the America of today is as close as it has ever come. Meanwhile, issues like universal healthcare are falsely cast as civil rights to advance a Marxist agenda that expands “democracy” and “rights” while threatening programs like Medicare and opposing enforcement against illegal immigration; supporting candidates like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan would harm both the state and the country. Also, Sen Chris Van Hollen is a radical nut job, Jew hater, and Israel hater. Van Hollen defends Democrats against communist labels by citing Republican attacks on FDR over Social Security. What did FDR do? FDR created internment camps of 120,000 Japanese Americans, refusing to sign a bipartisan anti-lynching bill to protect Southern votes, imposing Jewish immigration quotas during the Holocaust, and enacting socialist policies including industrial trusts and price/wage controls that prolonged the Depression, arguing socialism redistributes rather than creates wealth. Later, Wisconsin Governor candidate Francesca Hong views Thanksgiving as racist and posted in 2021 that Americans should cancel it. This is the problem with insufficiently patriotic immigrants welcomed into the Democratic Party's big tent. In breaking news, authorities arrested a man Sunday at President Trump's Los Angeles-area golf course after he appeared to monitor security preparations two days ahead of a fundraiser there. The man, who was taking photos and video, carried a 16-round magazine with ammunition in his pocket; a loaded pistol was recovered from his car. He was charged with allegedly carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition. The arrest was announced by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as Trump prepared to arrive for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. Political peace and social unity is something often heard about in the media and how communities need to strive to embrace unity and lay down their tribal identities that divide people. How might Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones respond to this kind of plea? More importantly, how does the apostle Paul talk about unity? In this opening lesson of the 28th and final gate of Orchot Tzaddikim—the Gate of Fear of Heaven (Shaar Yirat Shamayim)—Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that the Torah's concept of "fear" does not primarily mean terror or anxiety. Rather, yirah means awe, awareness, perspective, and clarity. True fear of Heaven is living with a constant awareness of Hashem's greatness and recognizing our personal relationship with Him. The Torah repeatedly teaches that this awareness is the foundation of Jewish life and the greatest treasure a person can possess.Rabbi Wolbe then demonstrates that Torah is not the ultimate goal—it is the pathway that leads to Yirat Shamayim. Torah study without developing a deeper awareness of Hashem is compared to possessing the keys to the inner rooms of a house while lacking the key to the front door. Likewise, the purpose of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai was not simply to acquire knowledge, but to establish an everlasting relationship with Hashem. Every mitzvah reconnects us to that covenant and strengthens that bond.The lesson concludes by describing three levels of fear. The lowest level is serving Hashem because of concern for what other people think. A higher level is serving Hashem out of fear of punishment. The highest and purest level is serving Hashem solely because He is Hashem—out of love, awe, gratitude, and a sincere desire to fulfill His will. Digging Deeper Questions: Saul wasn't looking for Jesus. Jesus was looking for Saul. When have you experienced God pursuing you, even when you weren't seeking Him? How does Saul's story change the way you think about people who seem "too far gone" for God?   Ananias had every reason to fear Saul, yet his first words were, "Brother Saul." Is there someone in your life whom you've quietly labeled as beyond hope, forgiveness, or acceptance? What would it look like to see that person through the eyes of Jesus?   Saul's encounter with Jesus didn't simply improve his life. It completely re-centered it. What area of your life is Jesus currently turning "right side up"? Where is He calling you to surrender control?   Jesus told Ananias that Saul would suffer for His name, but He also promised His presence. How does knowing that Christ is with us in suffering change the way we face hardship or opposition for our faith?   The sermon reminds us that the Gospel is bigger than our sin, our failures, and our assumptions about others. This week, who is your "Saul"? What is one intentional step you can take to pray for, encourage, or reach out to someone who needs to experience the pursuing, embracing, and transforming grace of Jesus? Scripture Reading: Acts 9:1-22 1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" 5 And he said, "Who are you, Lord?" And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. Day 2919– What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? - Luke 10:25-37 Putnam Church Message – 07/26/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?”   Last week, our message was “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” in which we learned to rejoice that you belong to Him. Today, we continue with our thirtieth-first message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?” Our core passage today is Luke 10:25-37, on page 1613 of your pew Bibles. The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b]” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,' he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today grateful for Your Word, which searches our hearts and reveals both our need and Your grace. We confess that we often know more truth than we obey. We can quote Scripture, discuss doctrine, and defend our beliefs, yet still pass by hurting people on the other side of the road. Lord Jesus, teach us today what it means to love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Show us where we have drawn lines too tightly, where we have looked for loopholes, and where we have failed to see others with Your compassion. Holy Spirit, open our eyes, soften our hearts, and move us from knowing to doing. In the name of Jesus, amen. Introduction: Back to the Basics In 1959, Vince Lombardi inherited the Green Bay Packers at the lowest point in their history. The previous season, the team had lost ten of their twelve games. They were discouraged, disorganized, and defeated. So Lombardi gathered the team and announced that they were going back to basics. He picked up a football and said, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” From the back of the room, Max McGee, known as a cutup, replied, “Uh, Coach, could you slow down a little? You're going too fast for us.” Lombardi laughed, but the point was serious. The most brilliant playbook in the world will not help a team if the players have forgotten how to block, tackle, pass, catch, and run. Sometimes, spiritually, we need to go back to basics too. By the time Jesus stepped into the public religious life of Israel, many of the most visible religious leaders had turned godliness into a complex system of rules, rituals, and loopholes. They had studied the Law, memorized the Law, debated the Law, and built fences around the Law. But in the process, many had forgotten the heart of the Law. Love God. Love your neighbor. That sounds basic, doesn't it? But as Jesus shows us in Luke 10:25–37, the basics are not always easy. In fact, they are impossible without grace. In the previous message, “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” the seventy returned from ministry rejoicing that even demons obeyed them in Jesus' name. Jesus corrected their joy, reminding them that their greatest joy was not what they had done for God, but that their names were written in heaven. Now Luke moves us into a conversation with a religious expert who wants to know what he must do to inherit eternal life. This is a very different kind of encounter. The seventy came back rejoicing in grace. / This lawyer comes testing Jesus with a legal question. The seventy had gone out announcing peace. / This man comes looking for a debate. The seventy were learning to serve. / This man is trying to justify himself. And Jesus, as He so often does, takes the conversation deeper than the man expected. / The question begins: “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” But by the end, the real question becomes: “What kind of person sees suffering and moves toward it with mercy?” Or to put it in the title of our message: What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? We will review four truths to understand the answer to this question. Main Point 1: The Wrong Question Reveals the Wrong Heart Luke tells us that an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus. / That matters. This man is not asking like a hungry soul seeking truth. He is not like the sinful woman who wept at Jesus' feet. He is not like Jairus, desperate for his daughter. He is not like the father whose son was tormented. He is not like the seventy returning with joy. He is testing Jesus. / He asks, “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” At first glance, that sounds like a good question. But there is a problem inside it. He asks what he must do to inherit. Those two words do not naturally fit together. You do not usually work to receive an inheritance. An inheritance is given because of relationship. A son or daughter receives what belongs to the family because they belong to the family. This man's question reveals confusion. He is thinking about eternal life as something to be achieved, earned, managed, or secured by religious performance. That was not unusual. Many first-century Jews assumed that as children of Abraham, they had a secure place in God's Kingdom. The question then became: “What level of obedience proves I belong? How far must I go? What exactly is required?” Jesus answers the question with another question: “What does the Law of Moses say? How do you read it?” / That is masterful. Jesus does not reject the Law. He points the man back to it. The Law was never the problem. The problem was the human heart trying to use the Law for self-justification. The man answers well. He combines Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus says, “Right. Do this and you will live.” Now, we need to hear Jesus carefully. Jesus is not saying the man can earn salvation by trying harder. Jesus is pressing the man to face the true standard. Perfect love for God and perfect love for neighbor would indeed describe a righteous life. The problem is that none of us has lived that way. / The man knows it too. So, Luke says he...

Why are we still "kicking the hornet's nest"? The last time Mark Labberton interviewed Daniel Zoughbie (UC Berkeley/UCSF) for his expertise on international diplomacy in the Middle East, there was not yet an Iran war. Regardless of your geographical distance, this war is imminently important as it escalates and impacts not just Iran but the entire Middle East and the entire world economy. "War is really supposed to be a last resort." Taking seriously both the significance and validity of Israel as a nation and the need for appropriate and just treatment of all Jews, Christians, and Muslims during a time of rising anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, this conversation comes at a volatile moment, pregnant with violence and chaos in American foreign policy. Starting the timeline at the 2018 US exit from the "Iran nuclear deal" (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) Zoughbie discusses a variety of interconnected issues, including the role of Middle Eastern geography such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandab ("Gate of Tears"), the proliferation cascade a Saudi Arabian nuclear program could set off, and the difference between tactical brilliance and strategic vision. Together, they also consider hopes for improvement, looking at Gerald Ford's unpopular but effective ultimatum that forced Egypt and Israel to talk; the Olmert-Abbas negotiations that almost reached a two-state solution; the role of Christianity in politics; the danger of national pride; wisdom from antiquity in Herodotus, Croesus, and Cyrus the Great; and a definition of greatness that has nothing to do with force. JNS Senior Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Tobin told podcast host Alan Skorski that the truth remains the strongest weapon for supporters of Israel as Democratic leaders and some Jewish officials intensify criticism of the Jewish state. The interview focused on what Skorski described as a decades-long Democratic campaign against Israel, highlighted by former Obama adviser and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's recent trip to the country. During the visit, Emanuel told Israeli audiences that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had isolated Israel and that the longstanding U.S.-Israel relationship had essentially run its course. Skorski opened the discussion by reviewing earlier Democratic administrations. He recalled how President Bill Clinton pressed Israeli leaders to stay in the Oslo Accords despite Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's repeated violations and calls for violence that contributed to the first and second intifadas. Under President Barack Obama, Skorski said, the White House deliberately created “daylight” between the United States and Israel. Obama likened Palestinian suffering to the Holocaust, the group J Street rose to prominence, and delegates at the 2012 Democratic National Convention booed recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Skorski asked Tobin about the responsibility to challenge Jewish officials such as Emanuel and groups including Jewish Voice for Peace and Neturei Karta. He connected the issue to sinat chinam—baseless hatred among Jews—that Jewish tradition links to the destruction of the Second Temple. Tobin's Tisha B'Av column, “Denial Inside the Modern Siege Lines,” argued that those who demonize Israel, rather than those who defend it, must internalize the holiday's lessons. Tobin said those who confront such critics hold the moral high ground. The conversation also addressed remarks by Caroline Glick at a recent JNS conference in Jerusalem, where she told the audience that “we still have the truth on our side.” When Skorski asked what that truth achieves, Tobin replied that it provides the moral authority to fight back and to mobilize Israel's supporters around the world. He added that debate is pointless with those who traffic in blood libels, because their aim is Israel's destruction rather than honest discussion. Tobin warned of a further danger from a new generation of “activist journalism” whose mission, he said, is to reshape both the United States and Israel according to its own ideological goals. The interview reinforced Tobin's position that publicly challenging Jewish voices aligned against Israel is both legitimate and essential to defending the Jewish state's security and legitimacy. When 60,000 people rushed the land and water borders of Spanish territory, specifically Ceuta, Socialists and Muslims were immediately blamed. But it was also obvious that some other factor was behind the invasion, which reportedly dwindled to only 10,000 when the rest returned to Morocco. A few weeks prior, both President Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened Spain; the former did so over Spain's refusal to back the war against Iran; the latter over Spain's criticism of Israel's handling of Palestine. In 2019, Yair Netanyahu was encouraging Arabs and Muslims to invade and conquer Ceuta instead of voicing concern about Palestine. In May of 2026, Yair was comparing Ceuta to Gaza, adding that the Jews would make a deal with Spain: they won't fund NGOs and Spain won't comment on Judea and Samaria. After the invasion, Danny Danon, Israel's UN Ambassador, told Spain to deal with their own colonialism and the resulting Muslim invasion rather than being concerned with Israel and Palestine. Hananya Naftali, an Israeli media influencer, sarcastically called on Spain to adopt a two-state solution and ceasefire with the invaders (there were no exchanges of gunfire). The Mossad International account shared images of anti-Israel protests in Spain coupled with those of the invasion, underhandedly sewing the two together and telling the Spanish president to resign. Ben Gvir, Israel's National Security Minister, sarcastically congratulated the Spanish and added that since the country supports Gaza, they should also open their own borders and let all those refugees pour into the country in the name of  diversity. The United States had a documented hand in funding the invasion, with a recent piece of legislation authorizing $40,000,000 to help Morocco reclaim Ceuta and Melilla. But Combat Antisemitism, and all the Israeli bots and influencers, defended themselves by claiming that the noticing of these patterns was simply antisemitic Jew hatred, especially the fact that the Jews helped Muslims invade the Iberian Peninsula in 711 AD too. Thus far in John's Gospel, Jesus is a polarizing figure. The Jews, and their leaders, have complained about Him, argued with Him, and were seeking to kill Him. However, like the woman at the well and the royal official, there are those of Gentile descent who encounter Jesus and gladly receive Him. Tashlich is the Rosh Hashanah custom of tossing bread or other small objects into moving water, to throw away our "sins" or our negativity. But today we're going to learn about something different — reverse tashlich, in which we remove our sins from the water.
