PREVIEW Professor Barry Strauss discusses the Bar Kokhba Revolt, which occurred in the 130s to 140s, long after the Temple fell in 70 AD. The main thing motivating the revolt was the Roman declaration that the Temple would never be rebuilt and that Jerusalem would never again be a Jewish capital. Rome maintained its vast empire through brutal intimidation. While the Romans were brutal, the sources suggest the Jews were not intimidated, though there was some disagreement among rabbis about the usefulness of the revolts. As Jesus walks to the garden where he will spend his final moments with the disciples, he continues to divulge the relationship between the persons of the Trinity. Laurie Cardoza-Moore, a prominent Christian Zionist leader ranked No. 2 on the Jerusalem Post's list of top 10 leading Christian Zionists, has resigned from her position at the Heritage Foundation after clashing with its president over the organization's refusal to cut ties with Tucker Carlson. Cardoza-Moore, founder and president of Proclaiming Justice to the Nations and host of “Focus on Israel,” stepped down from her role on Heritage's task force to combat antisemitism. The move followed Heritage President Kevin Roberts' decision not to sever relations with Carlson after the former Fox News host interviewed Nick Fuentes, a self-described Hitler admirer. During the interview, Cardoza-Moore expressed frustration with Carlson's pattern of platforming critics of Israel and alleged antisemites since leaving Fox News. She cited his interview with Bethlehem Pastor Munther Isaac, whom she called a “fraud,” during which Isaac claimed Israel is “occupying Palestinian land.” Cardoza-Moore said she confronted Carlson directly after the interview, asking why he failed to challenge Isaac's statement. “You're a Christian, you've read your Bible, haven't you?” she recalled telling him. “You're supposed to be educated and informed.” According to Cardoza-Moore, Carlson dismissed the historical inaccuracy as unimportant. She also criticized Vice President JD Vance for failing to defend the U.S.-Israel relationship during a recent speech at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi. Vance, a recent convert to Catholicism, did not highlight Israel's contributions to science, medicine, green energy, military intelligence or high-tech innovation, she said. When asked about theological differences between Jews and Christians, Vance allowed questions with “antisemitic undertones” to go unanswered, Cardoza-Moore added. Citing the Second Vatican Council's Nostra Aetate, which declares antisemitism incompatible with Christian teaching, she accused Vance of misunderstanding biblical principles. Cardoza-Moore warned that America is approaching a “new war against the Jews,” drawing parallels to 1930s Germany. She invoked Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Christian theologian who broke from the Lutheran Church as it aligned with the Nazis and preached against them even as they sat in his congregation. “We are at the doorstep of the same situation,” she said. In Jeremiah's day Jews had to learn how to live as exiles in Babylon. The New Testament refers to the baptized as citizens of heaven who also have to learn how to live as exiles in Babylon.

He was a Galilean, the son of Alphaeus, and was originally named Levi. He was a tax-collector (an occupation despised by the Jews of Palestine) until he met the Lord, who said to him, "Follow me." From that day he was one of the disciples.   After the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Apostle was appointed to bring the Gospel to his fellow Jews, for whom, according to the Church's tradition, he wrote down the Gospel for the first time, in the Aramaic language, eight years after the Ascension. Some years later, this book was translated into Greek by St James, the first Bishop of Jerusalem. No copy in the original language has survived.   Later, St Matthew traveled to Parthia and the city of Hierapolis (on the Euphrates river) to proclaim the Gospel to the pagans there. One tradition holds that he reposed in peace in that region at a great age. Another tradition holds that he was martyred by a king of that region, who later repented and was baptized, taking the name Matthew. The king then cast down the idols and established the Christian faith in his realm.   When St Matthew is portrayed in icons, the likeness of a man is shown with him, one of the four living creatures spoken of in the first chapter of Ezekiel. St Irenaeus writes that the man symbolizes Christ's Incarnation.

In our culture today, the collection of writings commonly referred to as The Bible has often been called God's Word. Some call it our final authority. Yet we see within the pages where it is Jesus who is specifically defined as the Word who was with God from the beginning—and was God—and He became flesh. In Him was life and light. Jesus never promised an addendum to the writings of the old, holy, Jewish scriptures ... but did indeed promise to send His Spirit as a helper and guide. This is not to minimize the Bible or anything in it, whether it be Old or New Testament. The pages are a reliable source of truth that point us to the Life-giver. But there is much confusion amongst thousands of corporate Christian church denominations with a multitude of different opinions that do not align ... and yet they pretty much all consider the Bible as the source for their beliefs. God is not the author of that confusion. Considering the phrase, "the word" ... it can be defined in multiple ways when looking through the pages of the Bible. For example, there was a word of law for the Jews and there was something better that came along that Paul preached, which he called the word of faith. One was given for the Jews "to do" under what is now an obsolete covenant, while the other was given for anyone to believe in a new and better covenant. But we are not on a divine path to become perfect interpreters of the Bible. This is not our destination. Nehemiah 4 tells of the mockery that comes from the Jews' enemies in an attempt to discourage them from the work of building the wall. Nehemiah makes it a matter of prayer to his God. Likewise, the people of the LORD were not diverted from the work. The enemies next threaten sabotage and open attack upon the rebuilding work. This too fails because of Nehemiah's diligence and the measures he takes for constant surveillance and the protection of the builders. Nehemiah places each family working on the wall directly in front of their home. Each worker works with a weapon in one hand.Hosea 14 tells of a plea to Israel to return to Yahweh. The nation needs to consider why they had been smitten and to find suitable words to request God's healing and forgiveness. Then the Almighty's anger will be turned away. In poetic language the prophet describes how blessings will return to Israel. In forsaking idolatry and learning the just and upright ways of Yahweh the faithful will thrive and experience the bountiful blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ's coming kingdom.1 Thessalonians 3verses1-5 Paul tells us of the sufferings that the Apostle experienced in Athens. Next Paul informs his readers of the great encouragement and comfort that Timothy brings him; and it is the news of the Thessalonians' magnificent response to the gospel. Note how the chapter finishes - read aloud verses 12-13 and pause, and ponder. Chapter 4 speaks of how pleased God and Paul are with the way that the believers are living their lives as a witness to their faith and to their trust in God and His Son. The love the Macedonian believers show to each other is evidence that they have learned what God's Word teaches. They needed to keep working until the Lord Jesus' return. These believers did, however, have a wrong view about the order of events after the Lord's return. The living believers will have no time advantage over those faithful who had fallen asleep in Christ i.e. died. Verses 13-18 describe what happens at Christ's return to the earth. Jesus will come with angels and the trumpet of God (1 Corinthians 15verses52-53). Those believers who are alive when he comes will be caught up together with those believers who have been raised from the dead, into a great cloud of witnesses (see Hebrews 12verses1- 2). These believers will be caught into the air i.e. aerial, in the sense that, together with their Lord Jesus Christ, they will be the rulers (or those elevated to be in authority) over the people of the earth - i.e. the subjects of that coming kingdom. Chapter 2 of Nehemiah is about his own return to Jerusalem; it finished with his rebuke to those who opposed the rebuilding of its walls; these were an Ammonite and an Arab (v.19), they did not want the Jews to be able to defend themselves.  But the Jews set to work – and it was a most remarkable team effort!As we read ch. 3  we counted 33 individuals and groups who each did their part in rebuilding parts of the wall, noting the words, “and next to him … and after him.”  For example, “Jedaiah … repaired the wall opposite his home” [v.10]  then Shallum, “ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, repaired, he and his daughters” [v.12] – it was an all-out effort with the women helping too! The gates also had to be repaired and put in place (v.14,15)   The priests also were involved (v.22), no one was exempt.This Is the same in building up the “body of Christ”!  Nehemiah inspired in them such a will to work that they completed the work “in fifty two days” [6 v.15] despite the increasing opposition we will read of tomorrow.Let's consider the spiritual counterpart to all this, we do not have a human Nehemiah urging us on, instead we have our Lord Jesus. How conscious are we that “he has said ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you'” [Heb.13 v.5]In Hebrews ch.12 believers are urged to “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith …” [v.1,2]     In Eph. 2 v.21,22 we saw that believers are building on the foundation the prophets and Apostles laid – and Jesus is the “cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.  In him you also are being built together …”Paul told the Corinthians, “Let each one take care how he builds upon it” [1 Cor. 3 v.10] and in I Thessalonians which we started reading today, Paul says, “since we belong to the day” and not the darkness of this world, “therefore encourage one another and build one another up” [5 v.8,11]Followers of Christ are a team and teamwork is vital! We have no head but Christ (Eph. 4 v.15).  Sadly those who have strayed from the way the church was ‘built' in the first centuries resort to having leaders, teamwork among them is minimal, if it exists at all.  So the example of teamwork we are reading in Nehemiah is an example for true believers of all ages

Tightrope: Balancing Grace and Truth in 1 Corinthians Week 3: “Freedom and Responsibility” Write Up: In this sermon, we will look into Paul's teachings on Christian freedom and its limitations. We'll discuss how to balance the grace of freedom in Christ with the truth of our responsibility to others and to God. This includes addressing issues of personal conduct, and how our actions affect the community of believers. We will also discover that just because we can do something doesn't mean that we should. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, 10:23-33 Think: Freedom in Christ is a gift that carries responsibility. Feel: Conviction about areas where my freedom may have been selfish or harmful. Do: Encourage others to live with freedom that is balanced by responsibility. POINT #1 – WHAT WE DO MATTERS  1 Corinthians 6:12-18 “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can't say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies. And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead. Don't you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don't you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.” But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:12-18**, NLT**) POINT #2 – OUR CHOICES EFFECT OTHERS 1 Corinthians 10:23-30 “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. Don't be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience. For “the earth is the LORD's, and everything in it.” If someone who isn't a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience. (But suppose someone tells you, “This meat was offered to an idol.” Don't eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you. It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks? If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?” (1 Corinthians 10:23-30**, NLT**) POINT #3 – WALK THE TIGHTROPE FOR THE GLORY OF GOD  1 Corinthians 10:31-33 “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Don't give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God. I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don't just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.” (1 Corinthians 10:31-33**, NLT**) Think About It. 1. How have you experienced freedom in Christ, and what challenges have come with it? 2. Can you think of a time when your personal freedom affected someone else—positively or negatively? 3. What “guardrails” could you put in place to help you make choices that honor God and others? 4. How does knowing the Holy Spirit is with you change the way you approach freedom and responsibility? 5. In practical ways, how can you walk this tightrope in your daily life—at work, at home, online, or in relationships?
