Now, let's talk about the Democrats' favorite boogeyman—Donald J. Trump. The man who, according to them, is a simultaneous threat to democracy and the reason democracy still exists to be threatened. The only man in history who makes actual consequences stick to the left like bad cologne on a first date.Think about it—Trump isn't just *a* villain to them. No, no, no. He's the ultimate villain. The Final Boss of their political video game. He's Lex Luthor's brains, Hannibal Lecter's charm, Hitler's… well, everything if you ask CNN, Attila the Hun's aggression, and probably Voldemort if we're throwing in fictional characters. And yet, despite this alleged supervillainy, the man still holds rallies bigger than a Beyoncé concert. Now, here's the irony—Democrats spent years screaming about "norms" and "institutions," only to torch every single one to stop him. They weaponized the FBI, the DOJ, the media, even Big Tech—because when you can't win at the ballot box, you raid the ballot box. Metaphorically. It's a time honored trope in movies: one brain, soul, consciousness…whatever you want to call it, either gets placed in a brand new body or gets swapped with someone else's. Sure, it's been done a bunch, but some would argue that it has never been done better than in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It's such a simple premise, where a daughter and mother suddenly wake up in each other's bodies, but it's done to particularly hilarious and iconic effect in this version. Now, the inherently “magical” element of two consciousnesses switching places is one thing, and one that's difficult to quantify from a scientific standpoint. But before we can even think about the “swapping” issue, we have to answer the question of what is the nature of consciousness at all. In other words, this is a much heavier episode than we expected it to be when we first set out to make it. Thankfully, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to guide you through it all.Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here for more!https://youtu.be/ozzzTDqFIfAFURTHER VIEWINGOK, so obviously, you probably want to have seen the 2003 version of Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan before watching this episode. Although don't dismiss Disney's 1976 original version of the film that starred no less than future big screen legend Jodie Foster and all-time small screen legend John Astin! Just note that we hadn't seen the newest movie, Freakier Friday, at the time we recorded this episode. But there are a couple of other key body swap movies that Tamara mentions in the episode. One is Penny Marshall's 1988 classic Big, starring Tom Hanks. That's a classic of its decade, and you've probably already seen that one. If you haven't seen Big, well, the only possible explanation we can think of is that you probably weren't a kid in the ‘80s or ‘90s. Just note that this isn't two consciousnesses switching place but rather a kid waking up in his own suddenly adult body. But 1984's All of Me, starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, and directed by Carl Reiner is something of an underrated comedy gem in general…not just for the body-swap genre! And if we can make one more kind of offbeat recommendation: Justice League Unlimited season 3, episode 8 “The Great Brain Robbery” has Flash and Lex Luthor switching consciousnesses, to hilarious results!Don't worry, you still only really need to have seen Freaky Friday to get what we're talking about today, but our questions about the nature of consciousness apply just as much to these other classics! FURTHER READINGDo you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! What Is Consciousness?Hakeem starts off the episode by asking a question that made our heads spin ever so slightly: what is consciousness? Well, to explain that, you can look at it from a scientific and biological/neurological perspective or you can take a more philosophical approach. Somewhere between the two you will find true consciousness. Oh no, now we're talking like the kinds of people who ask deep philosophical questions, too! Sorry for the long readings in those links but there are no easy answers to…oh no, we're doing it again!Theory of Mind“Theory of Mind” sounds more intimidating than it is, and to make up for the extra long readings above, we found one with helpful illustrations for you this time! Hey, it's still from Stanford.Foreplanning and Animal ConsciousnessSure, humans can think of scenarios that haven't happened yet (or, if you're anxious, that may never happen) but if we may quote Hakeem: “We are not the only conscious entities on this planet.” To that end, here's some animal kingdom proof for you! If you want to read that paper he cites about the chimpanzee tricking its food rivals, it's here. Or this creepy bird doing creepy human baby imitations to trick us into giving it food. The Biology of Consciousness? It's as simple as this: when you are anesthetized, certain portions of the brain are inactive, but when you wake up, they activate. Here is a more complicated explanation. BUT remember, correlation does not necessarily equal causation! The Big PictureDon't you love it when Tamara surprises Hakeem during the science section? She recommends The Big Picture by Sean Carroll as a wonderful way to look at some of the questions of consciousness. The History of Freaky FridayFor some more context on how this movie came together, we've got just the thing.“You Are Not the Voice in Your Head”Check out The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Send us a textSuperman flies onto screens with a divisive splash as James Gunn attempts to resurrect DC's cinematic universe. Our hosts Michael, Addy, and a special guest dive into whether this fresh take soars or crashes under the weight of universe-building ambitions. What makes Superman so challenging to adapt? The team explores why this iconic character has struggled in modern cinema, comparing Gunn's approach to previous incarnations from Zack Snyder's gritty Man of Steel to Brandon Rauth's Superman Returns. They question whether any filmmaker can recapture the magic of Christopher Reeve's classic portrayal and if Gunn was the right choice to helm DC's rebirth. The conversation heats up around the film's juggling act of introducing too many characters while trying to tell Superman's story. "Instead of giving us 10 million different characters, why don't you just flesh out the rivalry between Lex Luthor and Superman?" one host demands. They debate the political messaging that becomes more apparent on second viewing, the on-the-nose dialogue about morality, and whether the stellar cast performances can save a script lacking nuance. With ratings ranging from a dismal 1/5 to a respectable 7.5/10, this spirited debate captures the polarizing nature of modern superhero cinema and what it means for DC's future.Subscribe, share your thoughts in the comments, and join our passionate community of movie lovers who aren't afraid to speak their minds about the films that shape our cultural landscape. Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. So which movie was dumber and more suitable for booger eating six year olds? Find out!Watch to the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/cZCszsepEVM

By skipping the origin story and dropping viewers right into the action, James Gunn's SUPERMAN avoids feeling like the franchise reset it is, and allows the director to get to work creating the sort of busy, quick-paced onscreen universe at which he excels. We're joined once again by writer, podcaster, and Superman aficionado Chris Klimek to break exactly down why it works so well, as well as a few places where it doesn't, before returning to the film that helped facilitate this shorthand approach, 1978's SUPERMAN, to see how these different iterations of the title character — not to mention the familiar ensemble surrounding him — play in close proximity to each other. Can Superman be too corny? Is Lois Lane a good or terrible journalist? Why is Lex Luthor obsessed with land grabs, and what does his associate Eve Teschmacher actually add to these movies? We dig into all of that, then offer some options for Super-lementary viewing and reading in Your Next Picture Show. Please share your thoughts about either and all versions of SUPERMAN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. 00:00:00. This episode contains spoilers for Superman. The film writer Jessica Ritchey returns for a look at James Gunn's hard reset of the DC cinematic universe starting with his new Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Last Son of Krypton, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. After a decade of Henry Cavill's Übermensch Superman, Gunn has returned to the original idea of the Man of Steel as a kind and decent protector of the planet. incorporating elements of the character from the last 90 years of comic books, radio, tv, cartoons and cinema, while also plugging the idea of Superman into modern life, where real life supervillains like Trump and Elon Musk seem to have the upper hand. Gunn's Superman contends with techbros and oligarchs who use other metahumans to inspire fear and social media to corrode the public discourse while running private prisons and engineering global conflicts for profit.Jessica and I discuss what we appreciate about Superman as a light and goofy movie that holds up kindness as a virtue and goodness as a choice one can make, including the gentle rebuke of Man of Steel in the main plot twist, and how it has enraged the Snyder Bros and conservatives who confidently predicted this movie would fail, but we also eat our words about how sure we were this movie was not going to meet the moment.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Send us a textChristopher Reeve soars into cinema history in 1978's "Superman," a groundbreaking film that established the superhero blockbuster format we know today. Before Marvel, before Batman's dark reinvention, this was the movie that convinced audiences a man could truly fly. What makes this film so captivating decades later isn't just its place in history, but how it fearlessly embraces both cosmic scale and intimate humanity. From the crystalline landscapes of Krypton to the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, the film takes viewers on a journey that feels both alien and deeply familiar. Reeve's performance remains the gold standard for superhero portrayals - his ability to transform between the regal Man of Steel and the bumbling Clark Kent with nothing more than posture, voice, and confidence is a masterclass in acting that later Superman actors still measure themselves against. The film's vintage charm extends to its supporting cast and villainous plot. Margot Kidder's Lois Lane balances professional ambition with romantic vulnerability, while Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor occupies an underground lair beneath Grand Central Station that ranks among cinema's most memorable villain headquarters. The special effects, revolutionary for their time, might seem quaint today but still evoke wonder in their creativity and ambition. When Superman reverses Earth's rotation to turn back time - a moment of pure comic book logic - the film confidently embraces its fantastical nature rather than apologizing for it.Superman (1978) wasn't constrained by established superhero formulas because it was creating them. This freedom allowed for creative choices that modern superhero films might shy away from, yet they contribute to the film's enduring charm. Want to understand why superhero films dominate today's box office? Look no further than this pioneering classic that made us all believe a man could fly. Watch (or rewatch) it today and experience the birth of a genre that would eventually reshape cinema itself.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

Since his Silver Age debut, Pete has served many roles: noble, silent protector of Clark's secret; off-panel victim of Toyman & Prankster; husband to Lana & father to Clark Peter Ross; Vice President of the United States alongside Lex Luthor; and more. Is Superman Woke—or Just Wonderfully Human? Can a superhero cut through the world's chaos better than a political debate or another sermon? New York Times columnist David French and Christianity Today editor-in-chief Russell Moore explore why Superman still strikes a cultural nerve—especially in the age of outrage and “wokeness” debates. From his immigrant origins to the often-overlooked theme of adoption, they unpack how James Gunn's 2025 reboot revives timeless questions about identity, belonging, moral courage, and kindness. This conversation is more than capes and kryptonite—it's a surprising, thoughtful, and even fun look at the stories shaping who we are. This week on Comics and Chronic we're following the blockbuster movie Superman (2025) with a titular story Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb & art by the late great Tim Sale. Lettering by Richard Starkings & coloring by Bjarne Hansen“Told through the course of four seasons in the Man of Steel's adolescent life, this collection illustrates that it is the person, not the powers, that makes Superman a hero."SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS is emotional and insightful, humanizing the alien from another planet so that he is not only realistic but also relatable. It also features in-depth characterizations of Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and the Kents.”But first Cody gives an assessment on his second go around on James Gunn's Superman. This is some of Tim Sale's finest most gorgeous artwork. Does Jake hate Kansas and rural America? Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale capture the golden age of superheroes perfectly. A lot of this team's comics have bitter sweet and open endings, they're never quite a “happy ending”. Jake drops some his take on Hope. Superman is a CHONKY Boy in this story. There's very little action this story but only because the story is what drives it and allows the art to shine. Lex Luthor utilizes Super COVID-19 to attack Metropolis. Are there vague whispers of another season of Sopranos September? Cody reveals he's part Italian and therefore hates himself? Tune in this week to learn more about Superman For All Seasons and stay tuned next week as we reach our milestone 300th episode! And of course you already know, we'll be discussing 300! Send us a textWhat defines a hero? Not the powers they possess, but the choices they make when facing impossible situations. Superman 2025 stands as a testament to this fundamental truth, reintroducing audiences to a Man of Steel whose greatest strength isn't his ability to fly or lift mountains, but his unwavering compassion and moral clarity. While exploring James Gunn's fresh vision for Superman, we dive deep into what makes this interpretation both faithful to Superman's 85-year legacy and boldly innovative. David Corenswet breathes new life into both Clark Kent and Superman, crafting distinct personalities that somehow feel like two sides of the same genuine heart. His Kansas farm boy humility shines through even when he's soaring above Metropolis, creating a Superman whose power is matched only by his humanity.Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane emerges as the perfect counterpart - fierce, brilliant, and unwavering in her commitment to truth. Their chemistry crackles with authenticity, particularly during that electrifying interview scene where professional integrity clashes with personal connection. We dissect how this relationship anchors the film, giving Superman something worth protecting beyond abstract ideals. The film's most controversial element - the revelation about Superman's original purpose on Earth - transforms from potential stumbling block to profound statement about nurture versus nature. Superman isn't good because he was sent to Earth to be a savior; he's good because Jonathan and Martha Kent raised him with values that transcend his alien origins. His heroism becomes more meaningful precisely because it's a choice, not a destiny. From Nicholas Hoult's calculating Lex Luthor to Nathan Fillion's hilariously accurate Guy Gardner, we celebrate how the supporting cast enriches this world without overshadowing its protagonist. And of course, we couldn't resist gushing over Krypto the Superdog, whose presence captures the perfect balance of comic book whimsy and emotional resonance that defines this film.Whether you're a lifelong Superman fan or newcomer to the character, join us as we examine why Superman 2025 succeeds by understanding that what makes Superman super has never been the "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men," but rather his fundamentally human heart. After all, anyone can save the world - but it takes someone special to care about saving one scared, not-very-good dog.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
In this episode of Sigma Duocast, Rick and Rudy suit up to share their thoughts on James Gunn's Superman (2025) — and the capes don't quite align. Rick gives the film a 4/10, while Rudy scores it a solid 6.5/10, sparking an honest, deep-dive discussion filled with sharp insight, bold opinions, and signature banter.Rick offers a fair and open-minded perspective as he contrasts Gunn's hopeful, idealistic Superman with Zack Snyder's darker, mythic take. While he respects the creative direction, he explores where the film fell flat for him — from Superman's vague weaknesses and uneven storytelling to a Lex Luthor portrayal that left much to be desired.Rudy balances the discussion by pointing out the film's strengths — its charm, tone, and attempts at world-building — while also acknowledging its shortcomings. The result is a thoughtful, passionate, and often humorous conversation that digs into the heart of what makes Superman work (or not) in a new cinematic era.Tune in for hot takes, honest dialogue, and plenty of moments that'll make you think twice before putting on that cape.
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThe new Superman is a critical hit and box-office smash—despite conspicuous Republican efforts to discourage people from seeing it. It's the GOP vs. truth, justice, and the American way!In this episode, Matt and Brian explore all the reasons the modern right might have been put off by this movie, and Superman's longer-running themes:* To what extent are right-wing critics really just evincing old, philosophical conservative misgivings about liberal empathy and compassion?* Are today's Republicans really upset to learn that Superman is pro-immigrant (as he has been for almost 90 years, or is that just a red herring?* Or is it really just that this particular adaptation is an unsubtle send up of several recent, high-profile, right-wing corruption scandals (though not, unfortunately, the Jeffrey Epstein scandal)? Then, behind the paywall, in a recent interview, Hunter Biden of all people challenged Democrats to appeal to people's better natures, rather than appeasing their prejudices—just like a certain superhero…The younger Biden's broader judgment aside, his comments raise pretty profound questions for the party as it wrestles with how to broaden its appeal in the Trump era. Should Democrats be Superman to Trump's Lex Luthor? How far will uncut virtue get them? And who's the best avatar for Democrats to broadcast empathy across the board: Another old white guy with cultural roots in white working class America? Or a next-generation Obama-like figure who leans on respectability politics to appeal to cultural conservatives? All that, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed.Further reading:* Brian on why Republicans are right to dislike the new Superman (because it rightly depicts their political values in an unflattering light).* Matt argues Democrats should just throw Joe Biden under the bus. * The Hunter Biden interview.* The canonical Matt Bors cartoon.
With all the enthusiasm and boundless energy of a certain super-canine, we jump all over the new Superman movie that director James Gunn controversially decided to call ... Superman. We try not to give away too much in these descriptions, but it's kind of hard to avoid the fact that our hosts do a lot of gushing in this particular episode. In that way, they took in this film the same way a lot of people did: with appreciation for quite possibly the most human Superman ever seen on the big screen. Then there's the brilliant Nicholas Hoult's turn as Lex Luthor, deep-cut heroes like bowl-cutted Green Lantern Guy Gardner and the even-keeled Mr. Terrific, so many Easter eggs and cameos, and (of course) Krypto the Superdog. Basically, it's an episode-long reminder that breaking down a film critically is equally possible with one you love as it is for one you revile.Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.

Editors - William Hoy, ACE and Craig Alpert, ACE Superman editors William Hoy ACE and Craig Alpert ACE didn't need to be told there was a lot riding on this movie. Not only does it represent James Gunn's view on who Superman needs to be for modern movie-going audiences, it also kicks off Gunn's vision of the new DCU. From the first minute of the film, viewers encounter a Superman who bleeds and is grappling with not just his limitations, but also his sense of purpose. It's these complex layers that Bill and Craig balanced through their masterful editing. In James Gunn's new take on the most iconic character in the superhero realm, Superman must prove to the world that he is their protector and not a thread, after billionaire Lex Luthor enacts a plan to turn public opinion against him. Superman has launched back onto the silver screen in a big way. Written and directed by the new head honcho of DC films, James Gunn, this film sees an established Superman battling Lex Luthor while saving squirrels, babies, and one unruly super dog. But is this finally the Superman film you've always wanted? (yes!) And is this film better than Transformers? (Also, yes!)
With the huge opening of “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” Scarlett Johansson has just become the highest-grossing actor in movie history. Mike takes a look at the Top 10 actors, breaks down how much an actor would take home after getting paid $20 million dollars for 1 role and what actors on the cusp have the best shot at breaking into the Top 10? In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Superman directed by James Gunn. Mike has never been a fan of the character but did this movie change that? Mike also answers the questions: How was David Corenswet as the Man of Steel? Does it set up DC for success? Who were the rest of the standouts? The story follows Superman who gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about how Roofman with Channing Tatum could be his next favorite movie. “I'm not messing around. I'm doing important stuff.” We watched “Superman” (2025) with our friend and resident Supes expert, Billy Roach, and we welcome our newest Kryptonian overlord. In a growing list of Supermen, David Corenswet has proven himself to be quite possibly the dorkiest entry, and gosh darn it, it's so endearing! We're not going to waste too much time answering the trolls' review bombing this movie - instead, we're going to celebrate what we liked about it. Not the least of which is the chemistry between the leads - Corenswet's Superman and, yes, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. Okay, Rachel Brosnahan is doing some fine work as well, but we're really digging Nicky and Corny's performances as these iconic characters. It's gotta be tough to bring anything new to Superman and Lex Luthor after so many iterations, but these two brought it - and let's be honest, they're not too tough to look at either. Nicky's baby blues are worth the price of admission! We don't forget about this press tour, in which our two boys are publicizing their aforementioned chemistry and landing the crucial disposable income of the gay male moviegoing audience. Nicholas Hoult (Superman, The Great, Nosferatu) is a Golden Globe-nominated actor. Nicholas joins the Armchair Expert to discuss how becoming a blonde for a role hasn't changed his personality, how he inspired Dax's body reckoning, and dramatically overreacting when he tore his ACL on the basketball court. Nicholas and Dax talk about not feeling good enough for motorcycles to be his identity, what roles people still approach him about on the street, and how coming on the pod really gives his self esteem a boost. Nicholas explains the personal information he learned playing JD Salinger, gleaning wisdom about the emotional art form of acting while working with Clint Eastwood, and putting judgement aside when portraying villainous characters like Lex Luthor in the new Superman.
