For Nietzsche The Last Man stood as the opposite of the Ubermensch and the great danger of the "levelling" tendency of modernity. In this episode we are going to look at what Nietzsche meant by the Last Man and how his prophecy has come through. We look at The Last Man in 21st century society and what Nietzsche got right even while we should be cautious of fully embracing his ideal. ____________________

In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Julie Wei speaks with Dr. Gita Pensa, an emergency medicine physician, about her journey to becoming a physician coach. --- SHOW NOTES After enduring a 12 year malpractice lawsuit, Dr. Pensa explains why she chose to become a physician coach focused on helping physicians maintain their wellness through malpractice lawsuits. She started out by creating her own podcast to release 11 episodes about malpractice litigation basics. Once she realized her podcast was beneficial to many physicians, she started accepting speaking engagements and monetizing her skillset as a coach. To Dr. Pensa, physician coaching is not therapy for litigation. She doesn't ask about details of the case that have happened, but she does help her clients reflect on the thoughts and feelings that impact their actions and reactions to their cases. Additionally, the doctors discuss Dr. Pensa's client distribution in terms of sex and specialty. They also reflect on the relationships of malpractice attorneys with physician coaches. Although some attorneys may push back because of privacy concerns, some attorneys include Dr. Pensa on the team. She always tries to frame physician coaching as a wellness aspect of litigation period, not a substitution for legal advice. Finally Dr. Pensa ends the episode by talking about rising physician suicide rates and physician disillusionment. --- RESOURCES Dr. Gita Pensa's Website https://doctorsandlitigation.com/ Doctors and Litigation: The L Word (11 podcast episodes) https://doctorsandlitigation.com/podcast-2 BackTable ENT Episode 42- Physicians and Litigation: The L Word https://www.backtable.com/shows/ent/podcasts/42/doctors-litigation-the-l-word The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Kelly McGonigal https://www.amazon.com/Upside-Stress-Why-Good-You/dp/1101982934

My interview with author Dr. Kelly McGonigal is about the upside of stress and how to harness it. People who reported high levels of stress but did not view it as harmful had the lowest risk of death of anyone in the study. It wasn't stress that was killing people, but the combination of stress and the belief that it is harmful. Do you have a toxic relationship with stress? When stress feels against your will and out of your control, if it's completely devoid of meaning, and if it isolates you from others. How can girls experience a shift in their stress mindset? The more you try to avoid and resist the suffering, the worse it gets. The more you mindfully accept the anxiety, the suffering, the stress and take action anyway, the more it improves your well-being. It takes shifting your stress mindset. The most important factor in determining your response to pressure is how you think about your ability to handle it; you're more likely to have a challenging response if you focus on your resources. Most effective strategies for this are acknowledging your strengths, thinking about how you have prepared for a particular challenge, remembering times in the past when you overcame similar challenges, imagining the support of your loved ones, and praying or knowing that others are praying for you, mantras, these are all quick mindset shifts that can turn a threat into a challenge. Dr. McGonigal discusses the benefits of writing and self-compassion in understanding and handling stress.Contact Dr. McGonigal: http://kellymcgonigal.com/joymediaThe Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at ItContact Dr. Jordan: www.drtimjordan.comLearn more about the stress girls experience in their friendships and their emotions and how to manage them with Dr. Jordan's online course, Parenting girls: The challenges girls face today with their feelings and friends and what they need
Highlights: “Mindset is a person's ability to lead and govern themselves, first in the way that they think, second in the way that they speak, third in the things that they do. Because I think it starts in the mind, it comes out of the mouth, and then that shows up ultimately in your ability to do.” - Taylor Welch“You can map out clarity in two areas: what is my life look like and what is my life feel like.” - Taylor Welch“A lot of times I think people lose their will to fight simply because they only have one source of money, they have no assets, they have no control over their ability to pay for things.” - Taylor Welch“We really try to build businesses that help mobilize people's financial situation because if you can get in control of your finances, you build a measure of freedom for yourself to say whatever you want and nobody can take away your ability to eat.” - Taylor Welch“What we're getting right now is a wonderful opportunity to exercise, you know we're getting an opportunity to push against resistance in a way that makes the mind strong, that makes the body strong.” - Taylor WelchResourcesLearn more from Taylor with his FREE Targets training only available to Turley Talkers. Acne is frustrating, especially when you can't pinpoint what's causing it. But did you know that your hormones — and not just sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone — can be a huge trigger for acne? My guest today is Vivien Allred, NTP, CNHC, BANT. She studied to become a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist after struggling with many health issues during early adulthood. Getting no answers from conventional medicine, Vivien decided to take her health into her own hands and is now thriving. Her passion is to help other women identify and address the root causes of their symptoms, including acne, hair loss & period problems. Vivien provides a ton of health education on her social media accounts and website. She also hosts a women's health podcast ‘Hormones in Harmony' where she interviews expert guests in the healthcare & nutrition industry. Join us as we talk about how hormones trigger acne. Has your acne improved with hormone support? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: General connection between hormones and acne Vivien's take on dairy How is cortisol involved in acne? What are androgens? In women, how do high testosterone levels contribute to acne? How is the thyroid related to acne? Vivien's tip for relieving stress Quotes “When people think hormones, they think estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and they really do influence the skin, but there are other hormones like cortisol and insulin that can also be involved.” [1:28] “I usually see high cortisol being the most problematic because when your body is pumping out cortisol from the adrenal glands, it's also coming out things like adrenaline and some of these androgens as well, like DHEAS and these things can increase sebum production in the skin.” [11:37] Links Find Vivien online here Healthy Skin Show ep. 034: Diet Solutions For Adult Acne w/ Brie Wieselman Healthy Skin Show ep. 067: Best Stress Relief Tips For Skin Rashes (contains some different breathing exercises you could try) Healthy Skin Show ep. 183: Adult Acne: Gut, Topical Products + Nutrient Issues w/ Vivien Allred, NTP, CNHC, BANT The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Dr. Kelly McGonigal
Looking back on 2020, I realize just how much stress there was. So it seemed good to me to add an audiobook to my queue: The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It, by Kelly McGonigal, PhD. I also recently watched The Sound of Music with my kids, and I have a new appreciation for some of the main characters and themes of the story now compared with when I watched the movie growing up. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Our three panelists in this episode of Scaling Up Insights are Lisa Ridley, Cheryl Biron, Kristin McLane. Lisa is a Scaling Up Coach and focuses on facilitating positive change with her entrepreneurial clients. Cheryl started her career in corporate before having an ‘entrepreneurial fit’ and starting her own business. Kristin has been an entrepreneur for the last 24 years in the software industry. Let’s talk about stress management! Lisa believes a lot of it comes down to mindset and how we approach upcoming problems. Cheryl believes it’s important to ask, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ Get it all out there and then reframe/reason with yourself on different ways to solve the problem. When Bill was faced with possible bankruptcy, his financial advisor told him that there is no such thing as debtor’s prison, it helped him relax and see the bigger picture. Kristin noticed that athletes use stress to help them get better at what they do. Stress isn’t seen as a negative thing, but a positive. It’s almost like you have to use stress to get to the next level. The truth is, how do you see stress? In a study of 30,000 people on stress management, if you think stress is a bad thing, then you are 43% more likely to die. If you see stress as something that is not harmful to you, your chances are drastically lowered. That’s how powerful our mindset is in deciding whether something is good for us or not. Stress can be used as a useful tool and is an important part of how we navigate conflict. Lisa shares an example. A large number of the population is afraid of public speaking. Before you go on stage to speak, you can tell yourself two things. That you hate this and that you’re nervous/scared of doing this or you can say that these emotions you’re feeling right now are your body’s way of energizing you. You can redirect this nervous energy into focus. There was a study that used these two different public speaking groups, one that was scared and the other that was energized, the audience believed the ones who used this fear in a positive way performed better, despite being just as scared. “[Measuring productivity] is way more qualitative than quantitative in the age of knowledge workers.” Productivity means something different to all of us. It’s dependent on the work we’re doing, the frame of mind we’re in, where we are, and so many other factors. This personal element to productivity is the first thing we dive into with productivity consultant Theresa Ward. Theresa speaks from her own experience, her well-read knowledge base on the topic, and her work at her consultancy, The Fiery Feather, where she helps clients with process, productivity and team culture. The interview happened to align with World Productivity Day 2020 (which falls during the global coronavirus pandemic this year). Parts of the discussion are timely—like how we’re staying productive during current global events—but the overarching advice is evergreen, and touches on the following topics: Finding when you are most productive What is deep work? How can you approach deep work to be more productive? Tips to cut distractions and stay focused Finding motivation to get work done How stress impacts work Theresa mentions a handful of great resources in the episode: When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel Pink Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating by Brian Tracy Principles: Life and Work by Ray Dalio Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport The Pomodoro Technique: The Acclaimed Time-Management System That Has Transformed How We Work by Francesco Cirillo Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Kelly McGonigal

My guest this week is Keith Rabois. Keith is currently an investment partner at Khosla Ventures, but has a storied and diverse background as an investor, entrepreneur, and executive. He has worked in senior positions at Paypal, LinkedIn, and Square; has led investments in companies like Stripe, YouTube, Palantir, and AirBnB; and started the company OpenDoor, which aims to transform the process of selling a home through technology. One fun fact about Keith is that he may have the most impressive list of bosses I’ve ever seen, which we discuss during the episode. We cover a lot, but one thing we kept returning to was business strategy. Keith’s frameworks for gaining and building strategic power helped me clarify my thinking on the topic, and his examples of contrarian thinking will hopefully make you question some commonly held beliefs. In this episode of the Polytechnicast I have guest co-host Pete Stromquist with me to explore our approaches to keeping connected with our goals. In particular we dive into: how do we find ways to connect day to day and week to week with bigger goals? Also, how might we do this in a useful and not-too-intense way? And along the way we discuss physical tools and digital tools we use to help with goal tracking, journaling, and self-interviewing. Who is on the show today: James “Chip” Massey is the CEO of Plowshare Communications, which advises business leaders on strategic negotiations and how to accelerate the sales process by building strong, powerful, and trust-based relationships. Why is he on the show: For more than two decades, Massey served as an FBI Special Agent and hostage/crisis negotiator. During his tenure, his work ranged from collaborating with the CIA to crack espionage rings to high-profile corruption cases, to post-9/11 counter-terrorism investigations at key Washington, D.C. sites. As a hostage negotiator, he worked extensively in crisis situations, including international kidnappings and fugitive apprehensions. Within the bureau, Massey was noted for his ability to quickly build rapport, and his deep expertise interviewing both victims and criminal suspects. He spent several years coordinating the FBI's Victim-Witness Program, as well as directing the FBI Citizens Academy in Washington, D.C. What did I learn from the conversation: Hostage negotiations are like high stake sales meetings. The skills that you need to do well in both the situations are very similar. The most important skill is the ability to build rapport & trust really quickly. The fastest way to build trust is to do the little things right. They add up quickly. Empathy is a super-power that can propel us to success. Empathy comes from listening what the other person is saying so that we can understand what is going on in their lives. Listening is not just about listening to what is being said, but also to identify the emotions behind what is being said. IF we are able to identify & name the emotions that are being conveyed, we are already starting to empathise. Open ended questions can help us delve and dive deeper to really understand our partner. In stressful situation, it is better to be the emotional leader. It is in our nature to mimic the emotion that we see. So, if we are talking to someone who is angry and yelling, typically, we start feeling the anger and our tone of our voice starts to go up as well. So, if we are able to resist that and are able to stay calm and lower our voices, the person who is angry will typically follow suit. It is human nature. Also, we need to allow people to speak and vent when they are running on high emotions. Their emotions need a vent out in order for them to calm down. When we (or someone) are in a crisis, all our senses start to get into a focused state. We will listen less, see less and think less. So, it is best to use short sentences, increase the volume of our speech and be in front and centre of the person's vision for them to see us. Some phrases to avoid - “Calm down” or “I understand”. Both only end up flaring the other person's emotions The more we talk, the less we listen and if we want to influence someone, we need to listen more than we talk.
