Vitality & Performance Optimization PodcastVitality Course WaitlistFive Primary Points of this Week's Podcast* Preparation as a Key to Success: The podcast emphasizes the transformative power of preparation, citing quotes from Louis Pasteur and Seneca to underline that "chance favors the prepared mind" and "luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Examples like the Beatles, Muhammad Ali, and Steve Martin demonstrate how relentless preparation and honing one's craft lead to extraordinary success.* The Importance of Muscle Mass, Strength, and Power: Dr. Mishra highlights the distinction between these three aspects of muscular function:* Muscle Mass: The total volume of muscle tissue.* Muscle Strength: The ability to exert maximum force.* Muscle Power: The speed at which force is generated. Decline in muscle power is particularly significant with age and is linked to risks such as falls and frailty, making it essential to optimize all three for healthy aging.* Grip Strength and Longevity: Grip strength emerges as a critical biomarker, associated with reduced risks of conditions like diabetes, cognitive decline, and depression. Enhancing grip strength and overall muscular fitness supports vitality and longevity.* Balance as a Predictor of Aging: The ability to balance on one leg is identified as a powerful and reliable indicator of aging and musculoskeletal health. Simple practices, such as one-leg balance exercises during daily routines, can help maintain balance and reduce the risk of falls and associated injuries.* Call to Action – Take a Chance and Be Prepared: The podcast encourages listeners to "take a chance" in pursuing their dreams but to do so with thorough preparation. Practical steps, such as incorporating resistance training, focusing on balance, and sharpening observational skills, are essential for building resilience and achieving long-term vitality and performance.Vitality & Performance Optimization PodcastVitality Course Waitlist This is a public episode. Samantha Palmer is the Director of Brand Experience for Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. With over 20 years of experience at the college, plus time as a student, Samantha has played a pivotal role in developing and overseeing the historic tours and retail operations at Flagler. Her work focuses on enhancing the brand experience for both students and visitors, leveraging the college's rich history and iconic architecture. In this interview, Samantha talks about historic tours, St. Augustine's tourism industry, and taking chances on people.   Historic tours   "You get to experience the brand not only through what their script is... but you also get to experience a student who is here working on their four-year education."   Samantha discusses how Flagler College's historic tours are a unique blend of education and tourism, allowing students to gain invaluable public speaking and storytelling skills. The tours are not just about showcasing the beautiful and historic campus; they also serve as a crucial recruitment tool for the college. By involving students as tour guides, the program offers a dual benefit—visitors get a glimpse of the college's rich history, and students gain hands-on experience that enhances their academic journey and prepares them for future careers.   St. Augustine's tourism industry   "We have always been members of the St. Augustine Attractions Association... we're kind of lucky that this area is so concentrated with attractions, but we're also willing to talk to each other."   Samantha highlights the collaborative spirit within St. Augustine's tourism industry, emphasizing the unique position Flagler College holds within this historic city. As a major attraction in St. Augustine, Flagler College contributes to and benefits from the city's vibrant tourism sector. The college's involvement in local attractions associations and partnerships with other sites, such as the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Pirate Museum, ensures a cohesive and enriched experience for visitors. Samantha also notes how the college's location and history make it an essential stop for those exploring the oldest city in the U.S.   Taking chances on people   "I like to take chances on people. Let's see. What's the worst that happens?"   In her role at Flagler College, Samantha has learned the importance of taking chances on people, particularly students who may not initially seem like the perfect fit for a role. She shares stories of students who, despite their initial reservations or lack of experience, have thrived in positions like tour guides. These experiences often lead to surprising and rewarding outcomes, with students gaining confidence and discovering new career paths, such as in public speaking, theater, or law. Samantha's belief in giving people opportunities reflects her broader philosophy of mentorship and development, helping to foster a supportive and growth-oriented environment at Flagler College. If you'd like to learn more about Flagler College or get in touch with Samantha Palmer, you can visit Flagler College's website or reach out to her directly via email at SPalmer@flagler.edu. Education News Headline RoundupSupreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has leveled criticism at the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision just days after the 70th anniversary of the ruling. In his concurring opinion on a decision allowing South Carolina to keep using a congressional map that critics say discriminated against Black voters, Thomas this month argued that the Brown decision took a "boundless view of equitable remedies" and involved "extravagant uses of judicial power" to end racial segregation in schools. The Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) announced its closure, attributing the decision partly to financial difficulties exacerbated by ongoing issues with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) system. Concurrently, the U.S. Department of Education has pledged a comprehensive review of its financial aid office and the FAFSA process in response to widespread problems impacting students and institutions nationwide.A follow-up to a headline we first shared in February of this year: Harvard University's “Institutional Voice” working group has concluded its work and recommended that Harvard leaders not “issue official statements about public matters that do not directly affect the university's core function.”Taking Chances, Making Mistakes, & Getting MessyThis week, 16:1 explores the origins of “The Magic School Bus,” the beloved children's television series designed to engage young learners with scientific topics and other curious learning adventures.  The franchise, which started as a children's book series written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen in 1986, emerged from Scholastic Co.'s vision of blending science with fiction. The franchise sold 93 million book copies worldwide, captivating young minds and paving the way for its evolution into a popular TV show. From 1994 to 1997, "The Magic School Bus" brought science to life on PBS, with Ms. Frizzle, voiced by Lily Tomlin, leading her fourth-grade class on magical field trips. Each adventure, from exploring the solar system to journeying inside the human body, made complex scientific concepts accessible and fun for young learners. Today, the series continues to inspire through its presence on Netflix and has recently gotten a reboot, "The Magic School Bus Rides Again."We discuss the show's pedagogical approach, its effective use of repetition to reinforce concepts, and its clever handling of creative liberties with science. We also share behind-the-scenes stories and insights into the animation and voice acting process, revealing the dedication to making the show both scientifically accurate and entertaining. We just got back from a joyful and intense weekend at the Black Canyon 100k, arguably the most competitive ultra on US soil! Endurance sports are in the midst of a fundamental shift in what's possible, from the winners to the final finishers. This year's Black Canyon was a mind-blowing demonstration of how the game is changing, with tons of lessons that apply to all goals! Topics we discussed: why the sport has taken such a big leap in the last few years, how race dynamics have changed, the distinction of process v. results in an athletic trajectory, where big-carb fueling comes in, training thoughts, and so much more. We just witnessed a race that will go down in history as part of the first wave of a performance and competition revolution. Prepare to be inspired, awed, and motivated to slurp some carbs! And that was just the start! We touched on tons of our favorite things this week. Other topics: a BIG race announcement, a BIG plate of tater tots, pre-race goal-setting, impostor syndrome, aid station approaches, hydration strategy, wrecking Freetrail Fantasy picks, 2 new studies on THC and athletic performance, a doping positive from the Trail World Champion, a tragic loss for the running world, and hot takes. This one ends with a listener corner email that will bring you to the happiest tears. GET IT QUEENS! As Deanne Fitzmaurice describes it, a photojournalist's job is part sociology and part archeology, but most important, it's being on the cutting edge of what's happening, telling stories about people. It's this combination of varied disciplines, connecting with subjects, and learning something new every day that has held her fascination from her very beginnings at the San Francisco Chronicle through to the rich tapestry she's woven as a visual storyteller today. We recently sat down with Fitzmaurice to gain insights into the many facets of her career as part of our coverage of B&H's 50th Anniversary Bild Expo 2023.  During our chat, Fitzmaurice regales us with details from some of her most impactful projects, including the challenging mix of sensitivity and perseverance needed to tell the story of Saleh, a seriously injured Iraqi boy. After explaining how this assignment morphed from a one-day news story into a Pulitzer-prize-winning long-term project, we take a deep dive into how image selection and sequencing were key to this award-winning series.  Never one to shy away from a challenge, Fitzmaurice also describes confronting baseball great Barry Bonds about his problem with photographers, which shattered his impenetrable armor and resulted in her gaining exclusive access to photograph him both on and off the field.  When discussing essential rules of journalistic ethics and credibility in documenting an unfolding scene, Fitzmaurice points to the category of portraiture as a rare opportunity to shift out of fly on the wall mode to direct the subject and build rapport. We conclude our chat with insights about the role luck has played in her career, and how she puts herself in a position for synchronicity to unfold.  Above photograph © Deanne Fitzmaurice Guest: Deanne Fitzmaurice For more information on our guest and the gear she uses, see: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts/photography/taking-chances-on-stories-to-tell-photojournalist-deanne-fitzmaurice-at-bild Stay Connected: Deanne Fitzmaurice Website: https://www.deannefitzmaurice.com/ Deanne Fitzmaurice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deannefitzmaurice/ Deanne Fitzmaurice X: https://twitter.com/deanne_fitz Deanne Fitzmaurice Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeanneFitzmauricePhotography Think-tank: https://www.thinktankphoto.com/
