Today's poem is Or am I a room with a roof taken off, still holding onto my idea of ceiling by Kelly Hoffer. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… “Fireplaces, thunderstorms, ocean waves—these sounds are popular “white noise” for sleep and relaxation. And it's odd, when I think about how these sounds represent very real dangers in nature. About how we are soothed by the contained version of something that can harm us.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. This is the powerful message I took away from my conversation with Milton Bowens, the fine artist behind Milton 510 Studio. Milton's work doesn't just depict history—it reimagines it as a living, breathing force that connects the past, present, and future.Milton shared how his art draws inspiration from Black history and pop culture to create a unique, layered narrative. “I chose history,” Milton explained, “because I always wanted to be able to just have something that I could reference that would re-energize or re-spark my creative curiosity.” His work focuses on centering the African-American experience, blending historical elements with vibrant colors and textures in his mixed-media art.One of the most compelling aspects of Milton's creative process is his use of storytelling techniques inspired by filmmakers like Ken Burns and Spike Lee. He described how this influence shapes his work: “If you look at my collage works, you'll see that I deal primarily with the figures in black and white, and everything else around it is in this bold, vivid color. I'm making a visual reference that this is the information, this is the focal point.”This approach is both artistic and deeply educational, as Milton sees his work as a tool for sparking important conversations. For example, he and his wife recently created a 26-piece fine art alphabet series celebrating pivotal moments in Black history. This collection has traveled to multiple venues, including Alabama State University, and has been adapted into a set of collectible flashcards to make Black history accessible to more people. This year's Black History Month holds special significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of the event's recognition by the U.S. government. Milton spoke passionately about its importance: “Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Week, set out to make this celebration about making sure that African American young men and women understood the contributions that African Americans had made and were making to America and society.”Milton's art is more than something to admire—it's a call to action. It reminds us that Black history is American history and that we all have a role to play in preserving and celebrating it.To see Milton's work or purchase his Black history flashcards, visit Milton510studio.com.tl;dr:Milton Bowens uses art to connect Black history with storytelling, inspired by filmmakers Ken Burns and Spike Lee.He explained the origins and significance of Black History Month, marking its 100th anniversary this year.Milton shared his journey from a young graffiti artist in Oakland to a celebrated fine artist. His superpower, believing in oneself, helped him turn personal challenges into opportunities for growth.Milton creates engaging educational tools, like his Black history alphabet series, to spark meaningful conversations. How to Develop Believing in oneself As a SuperpowerMilton believes his superpower is the ability to believe in oneself. He explained that this belief stems from recognizing and fostering one's inherent talent. “For me, art rescued me,” Milton shared, reflecting on how his creative gifts became his life's purpose. He emphasized the importance of celebrating young people's creativity, saying, “When your child comes home with this crayon drawing and they show it to you, don't tell them, ‘Oh, that's fine, sweetie.' You take that piece of art, put it on the refrigerator, celebrate it, and you have just ignited a spark of creativity that will stay with that young person forever.”Milton recounted a pivotal moment from his childhood when art literally changed his life. After being arrested for tagging a police car at age 10, a mentor intervened during his juvenile mediation hearing and enrolled him in an art school. This opportunity set him on a path toward becoming a professional artist, allowing his talent to flourish. Later, even during his military service, art followed him—he became an Army illustrator after his commanding officer noticed his skill.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Recognize and nurture your natural talents—they can guide your path in life.Celebrate creativity in others, especially young people, to foster confidence and passion.Seek out mentors or become one for someone else to help unlock untapped potential.Embrace opportunities, even unexpected ones, that align with your talents.By following Milton's example and advice, you can make believing in oneself a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMilton 510 Bowens (he/him):Fine Artist, Milton 510 StudioAbout Milton 510 Studio: Fine Artist - Arts Educator.Website: milton510studio.comOther URL: m510dbart.comBiographical Information: Born and raised in Oakland, CA, the 5th son and 10th child in his family makes for Bowens'unique artistic signature, Milton 510. Mike unloads on Democrats planning to boycott the State of the Union, calling it petty political theater that only strengthens Trump’s hand. As Olympic gold medal hockey champions prepare to celebrate at the White House, he contrasts their patriotism with what he describes as childish grandstanding from lawmakers like Adam Schiff. From locker-room celebrations to empty seats in Congress, Mike argues the optics couldn’t be clearer—America is cheering, and the sore losers are staying home.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Much of what we’ve been told about a big story in recent days has been wrong. It involves the Trump administration, a tight Senate race, Stephen Colbert, and claims of censorship. Those elements have been in the news, but the story also involves Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bernie Sanders, and a Biden official running to lead the most populous state. News giants have pretty much ignored all of that because it doesn’t fit the simple narrative they would rather give you. Today, Josh sets the record straight. He breaks down the story surrounding Texas Democrat James Talarico, and explains how the media “took the bait.” He dismantles the most “off the rails” talking points, and warns us about the long-term dangers of “panic mode” thinking. Also, why the State of the Union address is one of the most frustrating nights of the year, and signals a need for a big countermovement in America. And the latest fantastic listener feedback includes an “I stand corrected!” Plus, Josh tells us about two conversations that highlight hope for our democracy. Fear and mental blocks can make it feel like your athlete is going backward. You see her working hard. You see her trying. And still, the skills are not sticking. If you are in that spot, you are not alone. When blocks seem to get worse, it usually means she is still in the awareness phase. She has not fully learned what her brain needs yet. Instead of asking why this is happening, start asking what it is teaching her. The hard days are full of clues. Have her reflect on what went well, what did not go well, and what she learned. That is where growth starts. When she hesitates or pulls back on a skill, that is her brain trying to protect her. You cannot force safety. Instead, ask one simple question. What can I do? Maybe that means a lower beam. Maybe it means a spot. Maybe it means going back a step and getting more safe reps. Confidence builds through repeated success, not pressure.Think of confidence like a bank account. Every small win adds to it. Every forced attempt that ends in fear takes away from it. Protect that bank. Praise effort. Celebrate tiny progress. Even if it feels small to you, it matters to her brain.Trust takes time. She has to build a better relationship with herself. That means patience. That means kinder self talk. The more she shows up for herself, the more self trust will grow.If you are stuck focusing on getting the skill back right now, try shifting your focus to effort and learning. When the pressure to reach the outcome drops, progress often follows. In this episode, you will hear • Why blocks can feel worse before they get better • How asking “What can I do?” rebuilds confidence • Why safe repetitions matter more than forcing skills • How shifting away from outcome focus helps skills stickIn this week's episode of the PerformHappy Podcast, I share how awareness, patience, and small daily wins can help your athlete rebuild confidence and trust herself again.Learn exactly what to say and do to guide your athlete through a mental block with my new book "Parenting Through Mental Blocks" Order your copy today: https://a.co/d/g990BurFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/complete_performance/ Join my FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/completeperformancecoaching/ Check out my website: https://completeperformancecoaching.com/Write to me! Send a textPastor Sue brings us into Lent 2026, beginning Titus 3 with a call to Gather, Practice, Focus, and Celebrate.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. It is an invitation into the great and ongoing story of God's work in the world. Pastors Eric, Mark, Susan, Daniel, and other leaders open the Scriptures not as a collection of abstract ideas but as the living, breathing witness to God's kingdom breaking into our midst. Each episode is a call—not merely to listen, but to take part, to step forward into the life of faith with renewed vision and purpose. Week by week, the pastors and leaders explore the deep rhythms of Christian discipleship—prayer, fasting, generosity—not as isolated duties but as part of a larger, richer, and more beautiful whole. They unpack these ancient practices in light of Jesus himself, the one in whom heaven and earth have come together. But they also turn their attention to the realities of everyday life—relationships, finances, the struggles and joys of being human—demonstrating how the gospel is not merely about what we believe but about how we live as God's renewed people in the present age. Celebrate three years of Bring Me The Axe with us as we continue our annual tradition of a deep dive into the world of George A. Romero and his iconic living dead series. For our last two anniversaries we featured Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead so it only makes sense that close out year three with the highly divisive (and Bryan's favorite), Day of the Dead. Taking place late in the zombie plague, a motley crew of scientists and military take shelter in an underground bunker, researching the cause and a possible solution to the problem at hand: mankind being driven to the brink of extinction against a worldwide zombie holocaust. Tensions are high, supplies are low, and morale is lower as the operation cracks at the seams. One scientist thinks he has a solution, demonstrated by his domesticated pet zombie, Bub. Released in 1985 as the third film in a three picture deal with United Film Distribution Company, Romero's epic vision of a horror movie, "Gone With The Wind With Zombies", to quote Romero, had to be scaled back significantly when Romero refused UFDC's mandate for an R-rated movie, insisting instead on a hyper-violent, gory spectacle. The result is languid, talky character drama cast with wild over-actors and punctuated by grisly violence and zombie carnage. It's Romero at his most conflicted but Tom Savini at his absolute best. Valentine's Day wasn't always roses and overpriced chocolate. Before heart-shaped candy boxes and awkward dinner reservations, there were martyrs, secret marriages, pagan festivals, and stories that feel more like horror folklore than romance. In this episode of Late Night Legends, Ashley dives into the dark, chaotic origins of Valentine's Day — from Saint Valentine's mysterious executions to ancient Roman rituals like Lupercalia, and how a bloody past turned into a billion-dollar celebration of love.K, Tim, and Maria join the discussion as the Legends break down the myths, historical facts, and strange traditions that shaped modern Valentine's Day — and debate how they actually feel about it today. Is it romantic? Commercialized? Pagan? Misunderstood?Or is love just another beautifully repackaged relic of something darker?Tell us where you stand in the comments.

Most high achievers are allergic to celebrating their successes. At best, celebrating feels corny and fake. It feels like something you “should” do, like your gratitude journal.(And then you feel kind of bad for not doing it.)At worst, celebrating feels dangerous. Resting on your laurels will make you arrogant and complacent… Pride goeth before the fall… The moment you relax is the moment the other shoe is going to drop…And yet, there is GOLD waiting for you inside your successes.Gold that you are MISSING because your brain is so busy focusing on the 1 thing that didn't go well.80% of my success (at least!) has come from extending and deepening WHAT'S WORKING – not fixing what's not.So in today's episode, I give you a simple way to extract and apply your Success Gold without feeling corny and without triggering your fears. If you're a female HBS alum, come to my monthly roundtable this Thursday Feb 26, and we'll work together to extract your own success playbook AND you'll get to grab from the success playbooks of others.Register here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/845yKxNERTqy5jQXI6UZRQ#/registrationAnd if you want to go beyond extracting just one success playbook and make building on your strengths and extending what's working a core part of how you operate day-to-day and how you set your career strategy overall…Book a free coaching consult and let's talk about working together: https://poojavcoaching.com/contact That's exactly what I do with my clients. And that's exactly what I use my own coaches to do for me. Because building around your strengths is way easier when you have an objective third party to help you identify them and time set aside to strategize and make it happen. And email me anytime with thoughts, feedback, and topics you'd like to see covered on the podcast! pooja@poojavcoaching.com

In this meeting of The Late Diagnosis Club, Dr Angela Kingdon welcomes Julie Farrell, a late-diagnosed Autistic and ADHD writer, activist, and co-founder of The Inklusion Guide, a resource dedicated to making literature events accessible to disabled people.Julie shares her slow, layered journey toward understanding her neurodivergence — from burnout, migraines, and chronic illness labels, to finding herself mirrored in Autistic writers like Katherine May, to sobbing through the documentary Seeing the Unseen and finally knowing in her bones.Together, Angela and Julie explore masking, shutdowns mislabelled as anxiety, CPTSD, creative identity, freelance work as nervous system regulation, and the relief of receiving a diagnosis in a supportive, affirming environment. They also talk about ADHD medication, menstrual cycle titration, EMDR therapy, and what it feels like to “precipitate out of the hot goo” and become solid for the first time. This episode is also about Autistic joy — about stars, navigation, grief, and how Julie's late father taught her to look up at the night sky and find her way.
How to Plan a Room from Start to Finish: 10 Essential Steps for Stress-Free Home Decorating Do you ever find yourself staring at a room in your home wondering, “Where do I even start?” If you've been buying pieces you love but still can't seem to finish a room, the problem likely isn't your style — it's that you don't have a clear home decorating plan. In today's episode, I'm walking you through the 10 essential steps to creating a foolproof home decorating plan so you can stop guessing, stop overspending, and finally finish your rooms with confidence. This episode is your practical roadmap for how to plan a room from start to finish — without copying Pinterest, wasting money, or getting stuck halfway through. If you've been searching for: How to decorate a room step by step Where to start when decorating a room How to create a cohesive home How to plan a room makeover How to finish a room you've already started You're in the right place. In This Episode, You'll Learn the 10 Essential Steps: 1. Know Your Aesthetic Before you move a single piece of furniture, you need clarity on your personal style. We'll talk about how to define your aesthetic without copying someone else's home. 2. Take Inventory of Your Room Learn how to assess what you already own so you can decorate intentionally instead of impulsively. 3. Define the Goals for Your Space What is this room actually for? Function matters just as much as beauty when creating a cohesive home. 4. Use Inspiration — Without Copying & Pasting Pinterest and inspiration photos are tools, not templates. I'll show you how to use them wisely. 5. Understand Expectation vs. Reality Be honest about your time, energy, and skill set so your decorating plan stays realistic and doable. 6. Create a Flexible Decorating Budget You need a starting number — but you also need room to adjust. I'll explain how to plan financially without boxing yourself in. 7. Follow a Step-by-Step Roadmap A room doesn't come together all at once. I'll show you how to build in “pit stops” along the way to reassess and adjust your plan. 8. Set a Realistic Timeline Most unfinished rooms stall because expectations are off. We'll talk about what's actually reasonable. 9. Execute with Confidence Once the plan is in place, you can move forward without second-guessing every decision. 10. Celebrate the Finished Space Finishing a room is an accomplishment — and celebration builds confidence for the next one. Why This Matters Most women don't struggle with creativity — they struggle with clarity. Without a clear decorating roadmap, it's easy to: Overspend on the wrong pieces Buy decor without a plan Leave rooms half-finished Feel overwhelmed every time you walk into the space This 10-step decorating plan gives you structure so your home can feel cohesive, intentional, and finished.
