This week's episode of the podcast is all about executive function—what it is, how struggles in these skills show up in homeschoolers, and, most importantly, what you can do at home to support your child as they grow. Whether your child is gifted, twice-exceptional, or has a neurodivergence like ADHD or autism, these ideas are for you. Here are some highlights and key takeaways: Executive function is more than organization. It encompasses a whole set of skills: from planning and prioritizing to task initiation, working memory, emotional regulation, and more. Many neurodivergent kids' intellectual abilities often outpace these essential life skills. Scaffolding and modeling are key. Building executive function doesn't mean doing it all for them. Instead, break down tasks, provide step-by-step support, externalize plans (think: whiteboards and visual checklists), and consistently model your own planning and problem-solving out loud. Progress, not perfection. Celebrate small wins and keep the focus on growth and effort. Building these life skills is a marathon, not a sprint. Our job isn't to micromanage, but to guide, equip, and be a safe base as our kids grow into independent problem-solvers. Whether you're a parent or educator, this episode is a great reminder: little steps matter—and you're not alone on the journey!   Links and Resources from Today's Episode Thank you to our sponsors: CTC Math – Flexible, affordable math for the whole family!      How to be a strong runner even as you ageWe all know the saying, "Age is just a number," but when it comes to running, that number can sometimes feel like a roadblock. However, I'm here to tell you that with the right approach, you can absolutely continue to improve your speed and perform at your best, no matter your age. So, let's explore how to stay fast as the years go by!Let's dive in! First off, it's important to understand what changes as we age. Muscle mass starts to decline after age 30, which affects our strength and speed. Also, aerobic capacity (the ability of your heart and lungs to provide oxygen to your muscles) tends to decrease with age. This makes it harder to sustain faster paces. But here's the good news: these age-related changes aren't permanent. By being proactive in our training, we can maintain and even enhance our running performance over time.Don't compare yourself to pro or olympic athletes. You aren't a pro.

Today's guest is Kathy Sierra. Kathy Sierra is a computer scientist, author, and horse-movement innovator who bridges neuroscience, learning psychology, and equine training. Co-creator of the award-winning Head First programming series and founder of the JavaRanch community, she later turned her expertise in intrinsic motivation toward her lifelong passion for horses. Through her Panther Flow approach, Kathy helps horses and riders unlock confident, curious, and expressive movement, sharing her work worldwide through courses, workshops, and writing. In training and movement, drilling “perfect form” is standard practice. The more we get into how humans learn, the more we realize that “perfect form” is a myth, and learning is a far more complex venture. Using both differential learning (variety) and constraints helps athletes hone in on their own optimal (and robust) technique, without needing to constantly be looking for one “perfect” way to do things. This is not only true in animals, but also in humans and in machine learning. On this week's episode, Kathy covers aspects of training horses using the same motor learning concepts that work best in humans. She also goes into how and why robots learn to move better based on constraints, trial and error, versus a “perfect technique” type of programming. This is a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion on human movement, learning, and sport skill. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength. What to try: Start with establishing safety and trust before layering complexity. Use observation as your first tool, notice subtle shifts in posture or energy. Match your cues to the learner's readiness, not your agenda. Discovering the Community of Movement – [11:16] She describes how connecting with other movement-minded people broadened her perspective and expanded her toolkit. What to try: Seek out cross-disciplinary conversations, dancers, martial artists, animal trainers. Share drills and games openly; let others adapt them for their setting. Use community feedback as a way to refine your own approach. The Power of Natural Movement – [21:40] Kathy emphasizes that natural, unforced movement often produces the most authentic and sustainable skill. What to try: Design environments that invite natural movement patterns to emerge. Remove overbearing cues, let the body self-organize. Watch for efficiency and ease, not just output. Emotions in Movement and Skill Acquisition – [32:19] She links emotional state to physical learning, noting that fear or tension can block skill development. What to try: Pair challenging tasks with positive emotional experiences. Recognize emotional cues, frustration, joy, hesitation, and adjust tasks accordingly. Celebrate small wins to keep confidence high. The Impact of Coaching on Authenticity – [41:22] Kathy warns that over-coaching can erode authenticity in movement. What to try: Avoid shaping every rep, allow athletes to bring their own style. Use fewer,

Designing a Life of Abundance with Chad Hufford: From Financial Blueprints to Mindset Shifts

Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Chad Hufford, founder and lead advisor, Veritas Wealth Management. He highlights how embracing failure as experimentation, focusing on intentional choices, and building life by design, not by default, can lead to real, lasting success and fulfillment.   In today's episode, we discuss: Recognize the impact of early role models. Examine who influenced you most in childhood and what values or lessons they modeled. Understanding these roots helps clarify the foundation for your present decisions and leadership style, guiding you toward more authentic, intentional living. Build resilience through stepping into the unknown. Consider experiences that pushed you out of your comfort zone, as Chad's Alaskan upbringing did for him. Cultivating tolerance for uncertainty sharpens your adaptability and prepares you for difficult leadership decisions, which is key for navigating change and adversity. Use blueprints as flexible guides. Develop clear strategies and plans (your “blueprint”), but remain open to adapting as circumstances shift. This approach keeps you proactive but nimble, allowing you to celebrate progress rather than judge imperfection—making goal achievement less overwhelming and more rewarding. Celebrate controllable actions over uncontrollable outcomes. Focus your efforts on the daily choices you can influence instead of external results like market trends or other people's behavior. This shift builds a sense of agency, boosts motivation, and creates sustainable progress toward long-term goals. Claim the driver's seat in your life. Acknowledge where you've been passive or reactive, and commit to making decisions that align with your values and vision. This empowers you to move from feeling stuck or at the mercy of circumstance to actively shaping your own fulfillment and success. Focus on mindset to create lasting change. Prioritize internal shifts in thinking and resilience, as Chad's book emphasizes, rather than just external “how-tos.” Cultivating an abundant and intentional mindset makes every step toward growth—financial or personal—feel more meaningful and achievable.   RESOURCES: Guest Bio Chad Hufford, a lifelong Alaskan, is a financial advisor, speaker, and bestselling author of “Forging Financial Freedom”. Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Are you still running your agency like it's 2010? You know the setup: rigid roles, top-down management, a “just get it done” culture. If that sounds like your agency, chances are you're the bottleneck. You're stuck in the weeds, making every single decision, dealing with high churn, and wondering why output is low despite how hard everyone's working. This is the story for most agency owners at the 7-figure stage. But the agencies scaling fastest today have evolved—and we're breaking down exactly how. Why Most Agencies Get Stuck Most agency owners didn't plan to be CEOs. You were good at strategy, sales, design, or delivery. Then suddenly—boom—you're the boss. Now the team looks to you for every decision, every review, every answer. The problem isn't your team. It's the lack of vision. When there's no clear direction, your team can't lead themselves—because they don't know where the hell they're going. Once I clearly communicated the mission—“We're building the resource I wish I had”—everything changed. Decisions got made without me. Accountability rose. That's what happens when people lead toward a clear goal. Key shift: You don't need more doers. You need more leaders. Attracting A-Players (Not Babysitting B-Teamers) A-players cost more—about 20% more on paper—but they produce 10–20x more than your average B-level staffer. They don't need to be told. They take ownership. So how do you attract them? Build a brand people want to belong to. Ramblin Jackson, one of our mastermind members, calls their team “Ramblers.” It's fun. It creates identity. It's not just a job—it's a tribe. Make your job posts feel like sales letters. “Here's who we are. Here's why it matters. Here's what you'll help us build.” Ramblin even walks candidates through the hiring process on their site to build trust. Put your team on display. Show them off on your website, on social, in your wins. A-players don't just want just a job, they want purpose. Make it visible. Building a High-Performing Culture Great teams don't happen by accident. They're built on clarity, feedback, and connection. Here's how to build a culture that scales: Communicate Clearly. Use Looms instead of emails. Weekly standups. Show people what winning looks like—and support them to get there. Give & Receive Feedback. Quarterly ask: What should we start, stop, and continue doing? Then actually do something with those answers. Support Growth Paths. Not everyone wants to lead. Some want to be elite specialists. Either path is valuable—support both. Forge Connections on Purpose. Especially if you're remote. Retreats, local meetups, even casual Zooms help remind your team: we're building something together. Stop Managing. Start Coaching. Reviews are fine. But coaching is where the magic happens. Ask your team: “Where do you want to grow?” “What ideas do you have to help the company grow?” You're not just managing performance—you're investing in potential. Then teach them the 131 Method to make better decisions without you: 1 What's the issue? 3 What are 3 possible solutions? 1 What's your one recommendation? This trains your team to think like owners. Also: stop assigning tasks—start assigning outcomes. Let them figure out the how. Debrief when things go sideways, but stop micromanaging. Growth comes from ownership. Sustainability Is the Long Game You can't grow a team if they're burned out, checked out, or walking out. Here's how to protect your team's energy: Cut the fluff meetings Encourage real time off Create space for recovery (mental health days, no-meeting weeks) Celebrate wins publicly (Slack shoutouts, weekly recaps) Keep people connected—virtually and IRL Culture isn't perks. It's how people feel when they're building with you.  The traditional agency model is broken. You don't need more hands—you need more heads. Build a team of leaders. Create a culture of clarity, connection, and coaching. Get out of the damn way—and let them fly. If you're ready to attract better clients and become uncuttable, check out the Attract Masterclass. It will help you position your agency to pull in the right leads instead of just more leads.

Today's poem is [since feeling is first] by E.E. Cummings. The Slowdown is currently taking a break. We'll be back on Monday, August 18 with episodes from our new host, Maggie Smith. This week, we're going back into the archive to revisit Ada Limón's time as host. In this episode, Ada writes… “I have a friend who will stare at something and say, “Now that's a poem.” A glove in the snow, a bird feather stuck in the fence post, a good meal. It feels like she is blurring the lines between what we think is a poem and what is poetic, between what is real life and the language we use to capture it. Today's poem, by the beloved poet E.E. Cummings, does that work of showing us the resounding “yes” to the poem—and also “yes” to the real, tangible, touchable, life.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Summer is a sacred time in Next Gen Ministry—full of camps, late-night conversations, first-time commitments, and unforgettable moments with Jesus. But summer is also a launching pad for what God wants to do in the school year ahead. In this episode of Next Gen Now, we sit down with our Global Kids Minister and Global Student Minister to reflect on what God did this summer and what's ahead for Fall 2025. You'll hear stories that encourage your heart, insight into what's shaping our strategy this year, and a clear invitation to join us in discipling the next generation—at home, at church, and in your everyday rhythms. Whether you're a parent, a group leader, or simply someone who cares about kids and students, this conversation will equip and inspire you. Listen in for:         • The fruit of camps, service projects, and student leadership         • How to partner with your kids during spiritual momentum moments         • What to expect this fall in both Kids and Student Ministry         • Why this year's curricluum matters for your family         • Tangible ways to pray, serve, and lead the next generation with purpose NRH Only - What is ION and Why Are We Offering It? As our middle schoolers take their next step in faith and maturity, we're excited to offer something intentionally designed just for them. Beginning Promotion Sunday at 9:30 AM in Room 272, our ministry team will lead students through the ION Course—Identity. Ownership. Navigation. Created by FourFiveSix Ministry, ION is a discipleship experience tailored to the unique needs of preteens and young teens.  Over the course of the semester, students will engage with truth, discussion, and spiritual practices that help them:         • Discover their identity in Christ,         • Take ownership of their faith journey, and         • Learn to navigate real-life decisions with wisdom and courage. ION runs during the full 9:30 service time and is a key part of how we're equipping students for the transition into middle school. As 5th graders begin to serve on Sundays and step into more intergenerational rhythms, ION helps prepare them not just to attend church—but to be the Church. We're passionate about walking alongside your family during this formative season and can't wait to see how God works through this next step in your child's faith journey. In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic  “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com

When your child is struggling, do you ever feel like you should know exactly what to say—but you don’t? In this episode, we explore the parenting pressure to fix our kids’ problems... and why sometimes, the best thing we can do is just pick up the phone and listen. Plus: the surprising milestone we celebrated this week and why your relationship deserves a party too. KEY POINTS Kids often expect parents to know what to do—but we don’t always have the answers. A powerful reminder: our kids don’t need perfect words—they just need us to show up. Building community makes it easier to hold the line with tricky issues like phones. Why celebrating your marriage or partnership (even obscure milestones!) is crucial for a strong family. Love and presence matter more than parenting “perfection.” QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "I didn’t say anything wise. I didn’t make anything better. I didn’t do emotion coaching or problem-solving. I just listened. And that was enough." When one wife admits to sobbing before her husband's departure only to discover he was secretly crying too, the conversation transforms into an honest exploration of attachment, independence, and the delicate balancing act of ministry life. The Almost Sisters share their unvarnished truths about supporting their husbands' calling while maintaining their own identities. "I wish we could have done more," one wife confesses about connecting with other ministry spouses during a recent separation – highlighting the often-overlooked challenge of isolation in ministry families. Their candid discussion reveals how ministry couples navigate the competing demands of church, family, and self-care without resentment consuming their relationships.Laughter erupts throughout as the couples expose their quirks – from one husband's supernatural ability to "sniff out Chinese restaurants" in any location to pregnancy-induced emotional rollercoasters. These moments of levity showcase how humor becomes essential glue in long-term relationships, especially during stressful ministry seasons. Most powerful is the group's collective wisdom about intentional connection. "I love doing little things like trips to Jonesboro, movie nights at home," one husband shares, revealing how simple touchpoints often matter more than elaborate gestures. The episode concludes with practical insights for maintaining relationship health while serving others – making it essential listening for any couple struggling to balance vocational calling with family priorities. What strategies have you found to stay connected with your spouse during busy ministry seasons? Together, they dive into the realities of building and scaling high-performing engineering teams, especially in fast-growth SaaS environments. Mary unpacks the nuanced challenges of evolving organizational processes, cultivating feedback-rich and psychologically safe cultures, handling “brilliant jerks,” and integrating AI to reduce grunt work and boost developer creativity. Tune in for a practical playbook on scaling teams, optimizing ways of working, and navigating technical debt as a business strategy, not just a developer's gripe.Key Takeaways[00:00:00] Feedback-Fueled Leadership: Mary's greatest fear as a leader is not knowing where she or her team might be going wrong—emphasizing feedback as the antidote to blind spots and organizational toxicity.[00:04:53] Process Check: When engineering processes feel slow or clunky as you scale, it's a sign to revisit and adapt. The right process should always speed teams up, not slow them down.[00:06:52] Culture First Hiring: Early hiring mistakes often relate to compromising on culture or failing to address culture misfits as teams grow. Brilliant jerks cost teams more in the long run, even if they are individually productive.[00:14:50] Handling Exits with Transparency: Delivering clear expectations and feedback means no one is surprised by tough decisions; transparent communication helps maintain trust when high-performers are let go for culture reasons.[00:20:38] Normalizing Feedback: Build an environment where feedback is everyday and safe—not just a scary signal of things going wrong. Celebrate when people speak up early and often.[00:27:00] AI Adoption: AI tools are powerful but still come with learning curves. Early adoption requires empathy and encouragement, especially in startups, and the biggest impact comes from knowledge sharing among engineers.[00:44:44] Technical Debt as Strategy: Make the business case for addressing technical debt—frame it with impact, not just engineering complaints, to get real buy-in from business leadership.Tweetable Quotes"My greatest fear as a leader is that I'm messing everything up and no one's telling me because they're too afraid." — Mary Moore Simmons"Process should always be speeding people up, not slowing them down." — Mary Moore Simmons"Hiring a brilliant jerk might make you faster today, but it will drag your team tomorrow." — Mary Moore Simmons"Feedback should be constant and small—don't let it become a scary event." — Mary Moore Simmons"Technical debt is not a developer gripe. It's a strategic conversation with real business impact." — Jeff Mains"AI tools double my speed, but they can also take me ten times in the wrong direction if I'm not paying attention."— Mary Moore SimmonsViral Topic: Amplifying Teams with AI"It's less about automation and more about amplification so if you're building a team, evolving your culture, or just trying to make scaling a little less chaotic, this episode has the clarity you didn't know you needed." — Jeff MainsAI & Automated Testing: "without automated testing, everything breaks. And I've experienced that. I think probably a lot of other founders have experienced that." — Jeff MainsSaaS Leadership LessonsLead with Feedback Openness: Proactively create a culture where feedback is routine, safe, and celebrated—not something to fear.Prioritize Psychological Safety: The best innovation happens when team...

It's been a decade since PJ Branco's testicular cancer diagnosis in 2015. In early August 2025, he completed his third year as a participant in the PanMassChallenge⁩ with his personal goal to raise $10,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The two-day race covers 186 miles, and PJ is one of 1,000 living proof cyclists and volunteers who have been previously or are currently being treated for cancer. All the money raised in this charity event goes directly to cancer care at this treatment center.PJ was the third member of his family to survive cancer. His mom learned she had breast cancer in 2005, and his father received his colon cancer diagnosis a few years later when PJ was in college. In 2015, PJ had his right testicle removed, and three months later, when a scan showed an inflamed lymph node in his back, he underwent chemotherapy. He compares his cycling stamina in 2025 to a time during 2015. After the removal of his right testicle and chemotherapy, PJ considered it an accomplishment to walk up and down his driveway. Now, 10 years later, he talks about life with his wife and four-year-old son, and his dedication to giving back to the cancer institute that treated him and his mother. As he explained in the podcast, "I now give back to those who helped save my life." He shares his story in this episode of Don't Give Up on Testicular Cancer from the Max Mallory Foundation.  Send us a textSupport the showFind us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & Linkedin. This week, we're going back into the archive to revisit Tracy K. Smith's time as host. Today's episode was originally released on December 18, 2019. In this episode, Tracy writes… “It takes a wise and gifted poet to create a panoramic portrait of life that allows guilt and anger and shame to occupy the very same space as gratitude. I believe the late W.S. Merwin was such a poet. Reading his poem, “Thanks,” takes courage, because it insists upon a fierce form of moral reckoning.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today.
