On today's episode, Jason Goff of The Ringer & Chicago Sports Network joins Bomani Jones to mainly discuss Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams. The show starts with Bo saying how people get very angry when he criticizes Scottie Pippen, who happens to be Jason's favorite all-time Chicago Bulls player (1:17). They get into Seth Wickersham's new book, American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback, where Caleb Williams' father, Carl, says how he told the Bears not to draft him and thought about trying the UFL route instead (18:40). After the break, they continue with the Caleb Williams story comparing it to Shedeur Sanders saying if Shedeur was as good as Caleb he would've been selected higher in the 2025 NFL Draft (27:26). They round out the show by saying how incredible Cam Newton's aura was (40:16), how Bo Jackson was the best athlete Bomani has ever seen (43:32) and they joke about the outfits Ciara makes Russell Wilson wear. For me, it's a solution to many things. When in doubt, hit the road, get out of yourself. Of course it doesn't always work, and there were whole years where I was too sick with vertigo to properly go for a walk, but when it works, it really does work. You don't have to have a plan. How can we nurture our friendships while juggling the demands of motherhood? In this heartfelt episode of Whinypaluza Wednesday, Rebecca discusses the importance of friendships in a mom's life and provides practical advice on being a good friend while balancing the many demands of parenthood. Rebecca shares personal experiences about the challenge of making time for friendships amid her busy schedule of "kid stuff, work stuff, house stuff, husband stuff, errand stuff, taxi stuff" and how she discovered that stopping to connect with friends makes her feel "like 100 bucks" and recharged. She discusses her recent Mother's Day weekend experiences where she enjoyed both morning and evening outings with different friend groups, highlighting the importance of self-care and social connection. Key Takeaways: → Show grace, not guilt. Understand that everyone has busy seasons, and don't make friends feel bad when they can't always connect immediately. → Make connecting easy - Get creative about friendship time; it doesn't have to be a formal dinner. Coffee dates, car rides, or walks can be just as meaningful. → Be honest and genuine - You don't need to pretend your life is perfect. True friendship allows for vulnerability and authenticity. → Celebrate each other—There's room for all of us to win and succeed. Lift each other up and be genuinely happy for others' successes. → Don't compete, connect - Friendship isn't a competition about whose kids are doing better or who has the better house. Focus on connection instead. Quotes from Rebecca: "When I stop my wheel and I have friend time, I feel like 100 bucks, you get recharged." "This is not a competition. Friendship is not a competition. It's not whose kids are doing better. It's not whose house is better, whose car is better, whose job is better. Just connect. Just be happy for each other." In this episode, former host Ada Limón writes… “When I was a kid, I loved falling asleep to the sound of the television in the living room. I liked it most because it meant someone was up watching the world so I didn't have to. The trouble of the world was unfolding on the news and I could sleep through it. There was something both comforting and eerie about it. A world that never shuts off. In today's tender poem, we watch how the tv becomes almost another character in a multigenerational family.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. They are in bondage, but so are those who are trying to follow the law or work their way to salvation. Why would anybody choose bondage after being set free?

Graduation is a big moment. It means one chapter is ending and a new one is starting. You might feel happy, proud, relieved, or even a little worried about what's next. It's okay to have all these feelings. The most important thing is to stop and see how far you've come. Graduation also means remembering all the hard work and sacrifices you and the people who helped you have made. The future might seem unsure, and that's okay. After graduation, new chances will come, but it takes courage to try new things. Life doesn't always go as planned. You might face delays or problems, but that doesn't mean you failed. Keep going and remember why you started. Your reason will help you when things feel hard. In this graduation episode of Time Out with the Sports Doctor, I share encouragement for the Class of 2025. In this episode of I’ll Do Better Tomorrow, Justin and Kylie share two powerful parenting wins from their week—one about holding firm with limits and another about letting go with trust. Together, they reflect on how boundaries, autonomy, and persistence are essential ingredients in helping children grow into capable, responsible decision-makers. KEY POINTS: Children need clear, consistent boundaries—especially when it comes to expectations and screen time. Limits may be met with resistance, but they help children develop resilience and internal motivation. Giving children autonomy over their food choices (within a supportive structure) can lead to lasting learning and healthier habits. Parenting isn’t about eliminating struggle—it’s about guiding our kids through it, patiently and consistently. Trust the long game: small wins add up over time. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “Once you do the hard stuff, then you get to do the good stuff.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Explore–Explain–Empower discipline frameworkhappyfamilies.com.au ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Hold the boundary—even when it’s inconvenient. Kids learn what matters when we stay consistent. Allow space for autonomy—give kids opportunities to feel the natural outcomes of their choices. Celebrate the small wins—even when progress is slow, it still counts. Avoid the path of least resistance—growth often comes through struggle, not shortcuts. Trust the process—support, scaffold, and repeat. Your persistence will pay off. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But by the time my sophomore year rolled around, nearly all of those shoes had been replaced by a pair of black cowboy boots. I wore them everyday, even in snow. By the time I came home for the holidays, they were worn down at the heel and a coin-sized hole had been worn through each sole. I was afraid I'd have to let them go, but my mother took them to the shoe repairman, who resoled them, built the heels back up, and polished them to a high shine, reviving them to their former glory!” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Together, they outline five essential principles for church leaders who want to reach and disciple the next generation: Safety isn't optional – Every church needs a clear child protection policy. Not sure where to start? Ask neighboring churches to share their handbooks. Leadership matters – Recruit leaders who can lead teams, not just love kids. Burnout is real without shared responsibility. Let kids serve – Kids and teens need hands-on opportunities to experience their faith, not just hear about it. Know your ‘one' – Ditch cookie-cutter strategies and design ministry that fits your local community's needs and rhythms. Recruit with vision, not guilt – Celebrate wins from the stage, don't beg for volunteers. Help your team build a long-term system for healthy recruiting. They also share fun, creative ideas like using an ice cream truck for outreach and creating dual summer camp models for different demographics. It's a practical, passionate guide for any church looking to multiply its impact through children's ministry. 00:26 – Meet Brittany Ara & Robyn Alexander   02:10 – Why Stadia Prioritizes the Next Generation   03:15 – 5 Things Every Church Leader Needs to Know   03:45 – #1: Safety Must Come First   07:13 – #2: Healthy Kids Ministry Requires Strong Leadership   12:00 – #3: Empower Kids & Teens to Serve   14:00 – Creative Outreach Ideas: Ice Cream Truck Ministry   17:00 – Involving Kids in "Big Church"   19:11 – #4: Forget What You've Seen Before – Know Your Community   21:00 – Real-Life Camp Examples That Meet Families Where They Are   25:39 – Balancing Technology in Kids Ministry   26:00 – #5: Volunteer Recruiting Should Be Vision-Driven   29:00 – What Keeps These Leaders Going

Today's poem is a brief meditation on breath by Yesenia Montilla. The Slowdown is currently taking a break. We'll be back soon with new episodes from a new host. This week, we're going back into the archive to revisit Tracy K. Smith's time as host. Today's episode was originally released on October 19, 2020.In this episode, Tracy writes… “The whole time, I felt all of my senses struggle to decelerate. My heart was like a drum solo. It felt like someone was pounding on my chest. While I was there, I flipped through my mental Rolodex of workday vexation. I ticked off the headlines that, even on a good day, hamper my ability to unwind. Lying there, struggling to relax, egged on by the actual bothers my work-week forces me to wrestle, I understood something. Many people live like this on a regular basis. The peril, the worry, the blood pressure roiling. When you wake up and people doubt you, threaten you, overstep respectful bounds. When leaders utter slurs against you. When every day the deck, already stacked against you, is reshuffled.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp
