Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective, Rhonda Stoppe shares her Sacred Scar Story of finding hope in the midst of postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance. What began as a season of silent suffering—marked by deep shame, emotional exhaustion, and the sense that no one understood—eventually led her to the help she desperately needed. Now, Rhonda offers encouragement and truth to women facing similar struggles, reminding them they’re not alone and that healing begins when we bring our pain into the light. Quotables from the episode: Living in that one-bedroom house, without electricity, with three children I was so overwhelmed. It wasn’t depression exactly, but I was completely overwhelmed. I was lying in my kids’ bunkbed with the door closing, weeping, when my husband came home and found me like that. He asked what was wrong with me, and I didn’t know. It was just too hard. It was a very dark season for me. I didn’t know that it was post-partum depression—I just knew I was frail, and I was fragile. Slowly, that post-partum turned into PMS/PMD. I remember not being the mom I wanted to be. Two weeks out of the month I wasn’t myself, and then two weeks out of the month I was myself. We lived behind a locked gate on a ranch, so I could hide. So whenever I wasn’t myself, and I couldn’t live my life “out there,” I just stayed home within the locked gate. Imagine if you’re a werewolf, and imagine if every full moon, you were going to turn into a werewolf and you couldn’t stop it, you couldn’t stop that werewolf from taking over your body, and the only hope you had was if someone would lock you in a cage until the full moon passed so you didn’t eat your young. That is what my experience was like with PMS. Before I experienced it, I had said to my mom and to my sister who struggled with it, “Oh come on, you’re just using that as an excuse to hurt people with your words.” Now, I knew enough to not hurt people with my words. Instead, I would pull back. During those times the only fruit of the spirit that I seemed to have was self-control, and I could keep hurtful words from coming out of my mouth that I couldn’t take back. I told my husband that the best way he could help me was to let me pull away in my bedroom, while he played with the kids, and let me just get through it. I would be in my room with my Bible open in my lap, reading, praying and asking God to help me. I felt so ashamed because I knew the Lord and I had the Holy Spirit in me. What happens with a hormonal imbalance is a real medical condition that occurs and can play itself out in a way that you can be very sinful in how you let yourself respond to it. I felt shame, I felt alone, I felt lonely, I felt like no one else was going through what I was going through. I think it’s silent suffering that we often go through as Christian women because it feels so shameful when we have the Holy Spirit but we don’t know why we cannot get a handle on this. What makes it so hard is that we are so ashamed about it, so we don’t want to talk about it because we don’t know anyone else who is going through it so we think we are alone, so then the message we hear is “what’s wrong with ME?” That just brings on more guilt, shame, remorse, regret, fear, and isolation. The isolation is about the worse thing we can do. We need to talk about it so that people know they’re not alone. The enemy convinced me I was all alone, nobody understands, and I was going to have to figure this all out on my own. I ultimately found help when I went to an endocrinologist who specialized in hormonal disorders. She gave me medication that balanced out my hormonal levels throughout the month. My sacred scars came out of this experience because now I can comfort others with what has comforted me. Whenever I share my story, women are desperate to talk to me because they feel so alone and don’t think anyone can understand the struggle, and for some, it’s ruining their marriages. The whole essence of the book Sacred Scars is that God didn’t cause our pain and suffering, but He will use it for good. Even now, my husband, Steve, who is a pastor, can help other men whose wives are going through it, because Steve went through it with me and can understand. Initially, in my pride, I didn’t want others to know about my frailty, but if God can use my frailty to help someone else, who am I to not let Him use my sacred scars to help someone else who’s desperate to know they aren’t alone. Don’t try to find someone to blame for how you’re feeling right now. Recognize what is going on in your body. It’s no one’s fault; you don’t have to find someone to blame for why you’re sad or why you’re mad or why you’re triggered. It’s a hormonal fluctuation and you need to decide how to take care of you and not assign blame or fault for why you feel this way. There is hope and there is help. Find a medical professional who specializes in hormonal imbalances. Don’t give up. Find someone you can trust who you can talk to about it. Isolating yourself makes it worse. Don’t give up and don’t suffer silently. Satan keeps our secrets and makes us feel shame, so when we share it, it disarms his hold on us. Find a safe person to share this with. You need to be careful who you share this with because some people haven’t earned your trust or the right to hear those intimate personal details. Have you ever looked at your dating life and thought, "How how I done all this work, and still haven't found my person?”That's exactly why I couldn't wait to sit down with this week's guest, Heidi Friedman, the author of Love Lessons: 104 Dates and the Stories That Led Me to True Love. After her divorce, Heidi set out to understand what love is really all about. She conducted personal interviews and went on her own exhaustive dating journey to find out. She wasn't looking for fantasy scenarios or rom-com stories. She wanted to grasp the lasting, life-enhancing kind of love that we hope our lives are built on.After her divorce, Heidi dated, she journaled, she cried, she kept going. And eventually she found true love, and herself in the process. In this episode, we're talking about:The one thing you must get clear on before you swipe again. How to stop dating “projects” (and what to look for instead). How “taking turns picking each other up” can be the secret sauce in successful partnerships. Why laughter might matter more than anything else.If you've been wondering whether love is still out there for you, let this be your reminder: it absolutely is. And sometimes, all it takes is one more brave step.
Send us a textThe Bible is unmistakably clear on one thing: that love stands at the center of our Christian life. We are commanded to love God, to love one another, to love our families, our neighbours, and even our enemies. That being so, it's reasonable to ask: What exactly is love?Today's passage teaches us not just what love looks like, but how it behaves. It begins with the command:Summary of Love in the Church:Put others first (vv. 10–12)Provide for those in need (v. 13)Practice hospitality (v. 13)But beginning in verse 14, Paul shifts the focus outward—to love for all people, even enemies.“Bless those who persecute you” (v. 14) — referring to those outside the faith. “Repay no one evil for evil” (v. 17) “If your enemy is hungry, feed him” (v. 20)Most commentators agree: these are instructions about how we love our fellow human beings, not just fellow believers. That said, even if aimed at relationships within the church, the effect of such love is a powerful witness to the outside world.Five Commands of Christian Love Toward the World:Command One:"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse." (Romans 12:14)Christian love doesn't retaliate with words or actions. When wronged, we bless. Speak kindly, not flattery, but grace. Even in persecution, love blesses.Command Two:"Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn." (Romans 12:15)Love is emotionally present. Love enters into others' joy and sorrow. It celebrates sincerely and weeps compassionately. Love shares the experience of others.Command Three:"Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited." (Romans 12:16)This is a call to humility and unity. Love sees value in everyone. Don't network upward; relate humbly. Love looks around, not up.Command Four:"Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone... If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:17–18)Love refuses to strike back. It doesn't even the score. It seeks what is right, honourable, and healing. Paul is realistic: peace may not always be possible, but as far as it depends on us, we pursue it.Command Five:"Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath... ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord... ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.'... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:19–21)This is the climax. Don't take justice into your own hands. The summer tourist season is kicking off in Capeside with a regatta. This might have been a low-key race for new sailor Pacey and the True Love, the little boat that could, if it were happening a couple of weeks earlier. Unfortunately, we're in the post-discovery era, so Dawson has to Dawson all over it. Leery's Fresh Fish is sponsoring the True Love? Fine: Dawson will just enter Joseph McPhee's boat, the Carpe Diem; THEN ask the McPhee siblings if he may use it; THEN pay the sponsorship fee himself but sail on behalf of the Potter B&B. When will he have time to learn the rules of sailing? Great question: he won't, and that's going to be a problem. In the far background, Jen has been giving Henry the silent treatment ever since he tried to fool around with her when Grams wasn't home, so he's been holding a silent vigil everywhere she goes, holding up a sign asking her to forgive him. No one is sufficiently annoyed by this behavior, least of all Jen. Show US love by listening to our episode on "Show Me Love"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

Welcome to episode 88 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino discuss one of the Buddha’s key teachings: the four immeasurable minds. When cultivated, these four qualities – love, compassion, joy, and equanimity – can help heal negative emotions and lead to a more fulfilling, compassionate life. Both hosts share personal stories and insights about how to apply these teachings, and how to help transform suffering and cultivate a deeper understanding and connection with ourselves and those around us. They emphasize the importance of self-love, deep listening, and embracing interbeing, as well as the power of small acts of kindness, the role of playfulness, the wisdom of non-discrimination in leading a more fulfilling life, and more. The Earth doesn’t discriminate; it accepts all and is the mother of all.” “Understanding is love, and it’s the most profound love because, when you understand, there’s no longer a barrier between you and me as separate people.” “The safest foundation is understanding. When you have that, you can work tirelessly because your understanding is your compass. And it can give you so much insight and so many ways of bridging the separation.” “One word can release suffering, one action can save a life.” “Looking with eyes of compassion, we can listen deeply to the cries of the world.” “There is a truth in Buddhism that, no matter what condition you’re going to find yourself in, suffering’s going to be there; your mind is going to create moments of ‘you’re not enough'.” “Why not be soft? There is so much strength in softness.” “Thay talked about how we can find joy in everything, that we can find joy in a pebble on the beach, we can find joy in a flower. We can find joy in someone’s smile. We can find joy in the fact that we’re alive. We can find joy in the fact that we can see all the textures and colors in the world. It doesn't have to be a big thing, but it is the recognition of what it is to be alive.” “I love the idea that one smile from somebody can restore our faith in humanity. Often, we think we have to act in big ways; that we have to carry out bold actions to create change. But one smile can genuinely save someone’s life. As Thay said, one small action can save a life; even a smile can change a life. We underestimate the power of the small things in life. We’re taught to see things in grand ways, but, often, seeing things in the small ways can be more important.” “Non-discrimination is the wisdom that we all are children of this Earth and we manifest on this Earth and we will return to the Earth.” “We should never be too sure of ourselves, our views, and our feeling of righteousness, because that only leads to more division.” “When you touch these elements of true love, loving kindness, compassion, and joy, your interbeing becomes stronger. Because if you have joy and you’ve tasted it, don’t you want others to have joy?” “Non-discrimination is for the more-than-human world as well; it’s for all beings. Because it’s very easy to separate ourselves from the natural world and to forget that, actually, the health of the trees is our health and the health of the oceans is our health; that, actually, the love that Mother Earth gives to us is also the love that we can offer back. So there’s a real feeling of reciprocity there.”

Maybe you have heard these lines: "Love should just happen." "This is just too much work." "I'm not feeling it, so it must not be true love." "I just don't feel the attraction/excitement I used to feel. Something is wrong." Have you ever been told something so many times that you begin to doubt yourself? You begin to believe what the other person (an upset spouse, friends, family, etc.) says -- even if it goes against what you (think you) believe. Our notions about love are like that. And unfortunately, those romanticized notions of love are what we grow up on. We are fed them by movies, books, songs, and culture. But Authentic Love is different. It is not devoid of romance. It is just not based on it. Romanticized love is based on 4 unsustainable elements. Authentic Love is based on 4 sustainable elements, and in your control. "I'm not feeling it" is not a reason to end a marriage. It is a reason to reconsider the working definition of love. Don't be sucked in by the view of love in the movies, in the books, in songs, and that others around you might have. It is dangerous, and misguided. (No, I am not against romance -- unless it is used as the "litmus test" of a relationship. Otherwise, it is great!) Listen to the podcast below. Welcome to episode 87 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino discuss the Noble Eightfold Path, a fundamental teaching that was emphasized by the Buddha. The eight elements of the path are: right view, right thinking, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right diligence, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The hosts focus on each element and explain their interconnectedness and how they form a comprehensive approach to self-discovery, personal transformation, and spiritual development. Jo and Brother Phap Huu also emphasise the importance of making the Noble Eightfold Path relevant, accessible, and applicable to contemporary challenges and needs, and the role of Plum Village community in adapting these teachings. The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu. If you do, practice the Noble Eightfold Path.” “‘Now I have a path, there’s nothing to fear' – because once you have the path, even if suffering is there, you will know how to walk it, because you start to see the way.” “The Buddha said that there are two extreme paths that we should avoid. The first one is seeking sensual pleasures, the pleasures of the world. The second is the practice of depriving the body, such as the practice of asceticism. Those extremes do not lead towards happiness and peace, they lead to failure on the path of understanding and love. And he said we have to find a middle way. And the middle is the Eight Noble Path.” “What we see, what we hear, what we taste, and what we consume on a daily basis will affect the way we are thinking. So, by focusing and practicing right thought, you will start to have a lot of agency. You will start to reflect on how your thought patterns are created, what habits arise in your daily life because of your thoughts, because of the ingredients that have been taken in through your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and mind consciousness.” “We do workshops on learning how to listen before even speaking. How to listen with our whole body, how to listen so that we don’t react, how to listen so we don’t allow our judgmental mind to try to fix that person right away. And then to mindfully select the words that we want to use to communicate. Even if it’s a wrong perception, there’s a way to communicate, to remove the wrong perception – or there’s a way to justify it and create even more distance and destruction.” “When we learn to expand our understanding, I think our life will become richer.” “There are pathways in life via which we know we can get richer and become filled with wealth. But what is our truest belonging? It’s not money. When we die, money doesn’t go with us. What is left behind is our legacy of who we were as a human being.” “I remember a soldier asking Thay [Thich Nhat Hanh] about how he can apply this pathway to his career, as a protector. And Thay said, ‘Of course we want compassionate soldiers. I would rather have you holding that weapon, who has deep understanding and has interbeing, than someone who is evil and who just wants to punish or be violent.'” “Sometimes we talk about the Zen mind as a mind that is empty. That’s not it. In the Buddhist deep meaning of emptiness, emptiness is ‘very full'; because of emptiness, everything can coexist.” “Mindful first and foremost is to be mindful of the suffering that is present, as well as mindful of the joy and happiness that is also present. So we want to continue to transform suffering as well as to create and generate joy and happiness, for ourselves and for all beings.” “Concentration can be grounded and developed everywhere, anywhere, and all at once.” “What Buddhism does, and what the teachings of the Buddha do, is show that we have a choice in everything we do. Because often we feel that life is imposed on us, that we don’t have choices. But, actually, in every single event, however painful, we always have a choice of how to respond. And that choice is based on our awareness. We need to be aware of what is going on, what the situation is. We need to be aware of our habit energy, and then we need to be aware of these teachings that show an alternative.” “We have our entire life to learn and we don’t have to be perfect now. But, as Thich Nhat Hanh would say, if there’s a little bit of improvement every day, that is more than enough. We don’t need to become suddenly enlightened.” “The exponential nature of technology, with AI and everything else, means that, actually, it’s easier to travel away from ourselves than towards ourselves.”

AJ's about to be the youngest person in his department at Unnamed College to something something no one cares, and Joey's going back to Boston to be his date for a night of listening to him read his writing and then do some ballroom dancing. Pacey warns her not to get too caught up in the fantasy, tamping down her excitement before she's even gotten on the train. It's just as well, since AJ's so caught up in prep for the event that he sends his lifelong best friend Morgan -- a GIRL Morgan -- to retrieve Joey and unintentionally show off all the history AJ and Morgan share. (She even knows his actual first name!) Pacey has his own annoying boy to deal with: Buzz (Jonathan Lipnicki!), his new mentee. Making Buzz help with boat refurbishment leads to a conversation about whom the True Love was named for and whether Pacey has even kissed her yet -- something that seems to strike a resonant chord in Pacey, such that by the end of the episode, everything's changed. Way off in a whole other part of town, Dawson is still helping Gale set up her new and as-yet unnamed restaurant, though it doesn't take long for him to make her wish he had anything else to do.
