The exploitation world of Star Wars rip-offs: you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. This week, we're joined by part-time Dark Lord of the Sith, Walter Kafka, to check out Starcrash (1978), directed by Luigi Cozzi, and The Man Who Saved the World - better known these days as Turkish Star Wars (1982), directed by Çetin İnanç. In all honesty, we don't think it's possible to spoil these two slices of psychedelic sci-fi wonderment, so there will be no Spoiler Territory this week. Buckle in for intergalactic David Hasselhoff hair, Caroline Munro in a vinyl bikini, diabolical Joe Spinell in a giant clawship and some absolutely mindbending insanity from the otherworldly desertscape of Cappadocia, Turkey. Ok...this week, we wrap up the month of April (and our April fools series of episodes) with a look at a film that features Captain America and Spider-man on opposing sides...if you're thinking of Marvel's Civil War, you're mistaken because, this week, we have a real treat! Friend of the show, Josh Gravel, brings to us a film we've only heard rumors about, a film that exists only to be remembered in the same breath as "Turkish Star Wars"...this week, we're looking at 3 Dev Adam (AKA: 3 Mighty Men...AKA: Turkish Spider-man)!!! Spider-man is the bad guy in this film, stealing antiquities and murdering those who possessed them and it seems only the fluent Turkish speaking duo of Captain America and the masked Mexican wrestler, Santo can stop him! Listen in and find out what we thought!

Was soll man hier noch erzählen, was an anderer Stelle nicht bereits treffender formuliert wurde? Es ist Turkish Star Wars. War Zeit, dass wir uns das antun.
Your two best star friends turn their eyes to the world of 70's and 80's film, as they pit four different Star Wars rip-offs against each other in a true battle beyond the Star Wars! We've watched and will discuss the high highs and lows lows of Message From Space, Starcrash, Battle Beyond the Stars, and The Man Who Saved the World (better known as Turkish Star Wars)! And who better to join us for a discussion of low budget sci-fi cinema of the past than our Canadian correspondent, Geoff Clarke? All that, plus we're giving our initial impressions of Ahsoka! Last week, we talked Jackie Chan, so it's only natural that this week we talk, uhh... Turkey? Yes, we're tackling our first TURKISH film, THE SWORD AND THE CLAW (1975)! Also known as both THE LIONMAN and KILIC ASLAN, this oddball feature is part TARZAN, part ROBIN HOOD, and part TURKISH STAR WARS (it even shares star Cüneyt Arkin!) In this episode, the Refuse Royalty explore the cinematic equivalent of copyright infringement from 1982: Turkish Star Wars. Two space cadets crash-land on a desert planet, where an evil wizard seeks the ultimate power to take over the world. Although the movie borrows some background footage from Star Wars, the plot is mostly unrelated. Will this film survive Judgement Day and be kept in the Junk Drawer for ever more, or discarded to the Pyre to be burned and disappear back into obscurity.... Tune in to find out! Filone: No, we're not talking Dave of Disney+ renown. It's a handy Italian term referring to a cascading film categorization system that values trends, traditions, and filmmaker intentions above rigid codification. Think of it as genre and subgenre's more fluid, contextual, and generally cooler cousin. Just the concept we need to fully wrap our heads around the movie we're discussing today. Author and "remakesploitation" expert ED GLASER, one of TC's most special guest specialists, is on hand to guide JOSH and FREY through the wonderfully topsy-turvy world of the 1982 Star Wars rip-off The Man Who Saves the World—aka TURKISH STAR WARS. And, friends, it is indeed an enchanting world, full of psychedelic yetis, exploding boulder kicks, extremely stolen (but amusingly employed) footage, and one very stylish jacket. Join us as we groove to a film editing style that feels like it might be a secret cortical gateway to another dimension. in the process, we learn just how this mesmerizing creation came to be. Ed takes us deep with illuminating context and fascinating tidbits, all while providing a rare peek into the unique charms and hidden value of not only this film but others in the same filone—unauthorized remakes and rip-offs from every corner of Earth. Looking for an even bigger remakesploitation fix? Check out Ed Glaser's amazing book, HOW THE WORLD REMADE HOLLYWOOD. You won't regret it. NOTE: We'd like to take moment to honor Cüneyt Arkın, star of Turkish Star Wars and all-around beloved actor. Cüneyt died on June 28, 2022, at age 84. Rest in peace, you lovely rock-punching man. Digital technology allowed George Lucas to realize his true vision for Star Wars...but it did the same for everyone else. The proliferation of affordable desktop video editing software in the late 1990s and early 2000s led to a new form of fan participation: the Fan Edit. And for the last 20 years, fans have made innumerable bespoke versions of the Star Wars films. THE PHANTOM MENACE without Jar Jar? REVENGE OF THE SITH where Padmé survives at the end? A NEW HOPE cut up to play like a black and white Republic serial? There's a fan edit for every taste (and to address every nitpick). JOSH had the extreme pleasure to chat with one of the best fan editors around, HAL 9000, to discuss what motivates fan editors, how the community rallied around his fan edit of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, as well as the legal and ethical questions involved with editing someone else's work (and intellectual property). And we ask the all-important question...what does George Lucas think of fan edits? HAL 9000 can be found posting on the forums at originaltrilogy.com where a polite DM may reward you with a link to his superb prequel and sequel edits, or simply following the download instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/7g7r9a/hal9000_star_wars_prequel_trilogy_fan_edits_now/ NEXT WEEK: All about The Man Who Saved the World, aka TURKISH STAR WARS, with filmmaker, writer, and film historian ED GLASER! Depending on where you're from, actor Cuneyt Arkin is an icon of either the independent scene or the world of b-rated material. But either way, his success was unlikely. And in the wake of his recent passing, Alican Pamir wanted to revisit this career that was literally made on a shoestring budget. Guest: Savas Arslan, Director of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University
This week we argue the merits of the Roger Corman produced BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980) before moving on to the inimitable THE MAN WHO SAVES THE WORLD (1982), also known as TURKISH STAR WARS.

I mean, that's no ad to keep you from listening. There's some good stuff in here. The RED Hydrogen One smartphone...Titanium Edition. It was silly expensive in 2018 (Like $1700) and it didn't live for too long out there. Verizon and AT&T were exclusive partners and it worked on their services. It was meant to be something special and it still really is...kinda. I'm into a bunch, you'll have to listen. I will, however, share some pics with you. I will also share this Turkish Star Wars trailer. That's not a real trailer BTW. It's a mish-mash between the original SW and this horrible film. Fun though. Here's the awesome training montage I discuss during the episode as well. The music sounds a little familiar. Cultpix Radio features its first guest, who pics his favourite films from the AGFA collection available on Cultpix, as well as highs and lows of the past week, new films and Car-nage film theme on what is now the #1 podcast for Film & TV History... in Sweden. This week: the Cultpix platform keeps getting more stable as tech issues are fixed and more people are invited to join, while we clear a Stripe hurdle. New films include the long 'lost' Calvin Floyd horror The Sleep of Death (1981), Girls in Chains (1943), children-are-truly-evil horror The Horrible House on the Hill (1974) and The Klansman (also 1974) that Rickard Burton and Lee Marvin were too drunk to remember shooting together, as well as a Belgian (!) cult film Impulsion/Gisèle/Embrace (1969) that predates the official The Story of O adaptation. The first guest to feature on Cultpix Radio - WCPX 66.6 is Joe Ziemba of AGFA - American Genre Film Archive, the non-profit organisation that has been working tirelessly to unearth, restore and bring back forgotten cult classics to the big screen, much of this in partnership with its sister company Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. You can find many of AGFA's best films in Cultpix. We get to know AGFA and the work that Joe and his amazing team have been doing. Films discussed include:Another Son of Sam (1977) - The film from "the outer reaches of madness" that has nothing to do with Son of Sam, about a killer on campus. Shot in Florida; which explains a lot;Bat Pussy (1973) - the film that cannot be unseen, once watched, now can Warner Bros and DC's lawyers stop it. Also the film that got Tim League and Alamo into hot water; The Soultangler (1987) - One Video Vortex Series, described as 'Reanimator made on Long Island for the price of a used car.';The Sword and the Claw/Kiliç Aslan (1975) - Featuring the lead of the Turkish Star Wars (!) this is a good introduction into the strange world of Turkish action/exploitation/sensational films;Lady Street Fighter (1981) - Worth watching for actor-writer-producer Renee Harmon, one of the most unique women in exploitation cinema. She made films on her terms. We finish with music by Taken By Savages.

Team Obscura sits down and gets weird by checking out the 1982 film "Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam," better known around the world as "The Man Who Saved The World" and even better known as "Turkish Star Wars." Imagine a movie so bent on being a mockbuster that it literally stole footage from the George Lucas space opera it was inspired by, in order to tell a strange religious allegory with a dash of nuclear disarmament messaging and... A robot that chokes a kid out for some reason. A Star Wars Holiday Special and Turkish Star Wars
Double Trouble Feature is a podcast that pairs great, classic, and beloved films with movies… a little more off the beaten path. This week we've got another space themed episode for all our sci-fi fans. Alex can finally stop lying to people about having seen 2001: A Space Odyssey now that Jenn's finally showed it to her. In turn, Alex shows Jenn the classic B movie Turkish Star Wars and tries to explain why it's basically the same film as 2001. In the process Jenn threatens to strangle Alex, Alex quotes Insane Clown Posse, and they both break their own ratings rules. Music by DigitalSpasm on pond5: www.pond5.com/artist/digitalspasm
Join us as we review 2 of the most remarkable Turkish mockbusters in the form of The Man who saves the World (aka Turkish Star Wars) and Rampage (aka Turkish Rambo). We'll reveal just how this films were able to shamelessly rip off their American originals, including use of actual footage, and write their name into Turkish cinematic history. Which copyright calamity will prevail?

This week we go to Turkey for the bonkers, balls-to-the-wall, berserk martial arts masterpiece: The Sword & The Claw. There's daringly dashing do-gooders! Dastardly dangerous despots! And a legendary leaping Lion Man! Plus a whole lot of dubious dubbing... This is probably the first and only martial arts film from Turkey (excluding Turkish Star Wars). Listen in as Phil, Kit, Lil & Graham wax lyrically about this film's quite straight forward and understandable plot. Which is a very rare occurrences for an episode of Death By Video.

Hey... So... We got a little bit drunk. Just a bit. I personally had both tequila and a high percent beer. It was lovely. We watched a thing. Words cannot describe how beautiful it is. I made the music. I will probably make more music soon.

2 hour podcast version, first broadcast 5pm, 20th March 2017 on Resonance FM in London. NSFW (some swearing, explicit discussions about exploitation films). Every month, interesting people talk about the music, films and music for films which have shaped their lives. Tim Concannon, Roz Kaveney and film-maker Cem Kaya visit Umit and Son. We explore Umit Mesut's astonishing shop, a treasure house of every film format imaginable: from 8 and 16mm film, to rare Turkish VHS tapes. With Umit, we discuss the legacy of Turkish action star and radical film director Yılmaz Güney. On our Scala map of London's underground cinema we've put Cem's documentary about Turkish "Yeşilçam" cinema, 'Remake, Remix, Rip-Off' at Dalston Junction. We talk about Cem's film with scholar Iain Robert Smith, whose book 'The Hollywood Meme' discusses transnational remakes of everything from 'The Godfather' and 'The Exorcist' to the Turkish 'Wizard of Oz' and the Indian Superman. Roz and Tim ponder the legacy of "films so bad they're good", Susan Sontag's 'Notes on Camp', as well as trans pioneer and the acclaimed "Worst Film-maker of All Time", the legendary Edward D Wood Jnr. Hosts Ryan and Blake sit down with guerilla director and master of the Hollywood low-budget movie, Rick Sloane, best known in “Mystery Science Theater 3000” circles for his 1988 horror flick, “Hobgoblins.” The Podcast Gang reads viewer mail in “The Feedback Loop,” and tries to decide how to best rank the strange and wonderful (and occasionally terrible) sodas they taste each week. The Gang debuts a new segment, “Cheesy Movies We’d Like to See Riffed.” This episode’s discussion – “Turkish Star Wars,” or “Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (The Man Who Saved the World).” In the “Mini Soda Review,” Host Greg introduces the others to a staple of Japanese summer, Ramune Lychee Soda, as well as the eccentricities of the drink’s Codd-neck bottle. Mostly, Ryan wants to smash the bottle for the glass marble. In “Reviewers in the MSTie,” James braves, “Fire Maidens of Outer Space.” A movie so bad, James shoots his Old Timey Pianer Player Rummy – who plays in the background music – to spare Rummy the misery. (This podcast does not represent Alternaversal, Shout Factory or the Kickstarter campaign in any official capacity). EDITOR’S NOTE: In June 2019, this podcast merged with the Damn Dirty Geeks Podcast and became The Damn Dirty Drive-in. These are our classic back catalog episodes, dating back to March 2016. Please enjoy! The new Drive-In podcast opens for business with original sketches, movie discussions, interviews, weird food tastings and more at Episode 168.

Sometime you watch a movie and think, "I swear I've seen that footage somewhere before?" or "Haven't I heard this score in something else?" Yes, the movie world has a long and interesting history reusing elements from other films. Sometimes great care is taken to mask these element so the audience doesn't notice, but then there are those special few who don't seem to care at all. With The Force Awakens just on the horizon we felt it was time to return to a So-Bad-It's-Good movie which brazen takes from the biggest movies of all time. In anticipation of the upcoming The Force Awakens, Sean and Mike take a look back at the first film either of them ever saw, George Lucas's 1977 Star Wars. And in celebration of Thanksgiving, they also talk about Çetin İnanç's 1982 epic The Man Who Saves the World, also known as Turkish Star Wars. They also talk about the singular, wildly successful and somewhat disappointing career of George Lucas and make their picks for the essential Blockbuster Saga.

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-053-battleBeyondTheStars.mp3 Download MP3 For reasons that no film historian has ever divined, the late 1970s and early 80s were a real boom time for space operas -- a trend that culminated in the mysteriously-titled Turkish Star Wars. For whatever reason, in 1980, bargain-hunter Roger Corman decided to produce this re-imagining of The Magnificent Seven in space, an idea whose complexity is only slightly compounded by the fact that The Magnificent Seven was itself Seven Samurai in the Old West. All of which is to say that Hollywood is ready for my adaptation of Battle Beyond The Stars but at a high school. If I can get Sybil Danning to play a saucy teacher, I'm pretty sure I can get the green light. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

And it doesn't really have that much in common with American Star Wars; it's about a couple of Turks trying to save Earth from a space villain who may or may not have already destroyed Earth, it's not entirely clear. But everyone calls it Turkish Star Wars, probably because it infamously just straight-up uses footage from the original, projecting it behind actors to make them look like they're in space. Actually, it just looks like they're standing in front of a competently-made movie. Even the stuff they steal, like the aforementioned space footage and the Indiana Jones theme, they manage to botch in the editing process. But there's definitely some fun to be had in watching dudes karate-chop the arms off of overgrown muppets, which perhaps explains this film's enduring popularity. You be the judge...or just let us. Its not all about you, you know. People come here not just to follow you. This week it is all about the sad bastards trying to get over the girl! We start with the 2008 Jason Segel comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and we tie that up nicely with Swingers for the fourth installment of our 90's comedy fest. No top 5 this week. Instead, sit back and enjoy Sherlock's punishment review of 'The Man Who Saved The World' otherwise known as Turkish Star Wars. Also, we read some feedback. Enjoy!
(Patrick)
