Today’s Bible Verse: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” — Psalm 126:3 (NIV) Psalm 126:3 is a simple, powerful declaration of gratitude. After a season of hardship and restoration, God’s people pause to acknowledge what He has done—and joy follows. This verse reminds us that joy often grows when we take time to recognize God’s faithfulness in our story. Meet Today’s Host: Carol Ogle McCracken

In this episode of If I were the Minister for Education, I break down what happened after projected SNA allocations for the 2026/27 school year showed roughly 200 schools set to lose at least one Special Needs Assistant: not due to cuts or clerical error, but because of how the national redistribution model works under a capped total. I explain the background to the current situation, including the long period where schools largely held on to allocations since around 2017, the return of NCSE-led reviews from 2023 onward, and how this year's broader round of reviews led to some schools being told they had more SNAs than the model allowed. I talk through the predictable political cycle that followed: schools and parents mobilised, pressure built, the Minister “paused” the process, additional funding was announced (€19 million), and the government confirmed no school would lose an SNA this year. While I'm relieved for schools, principals and SNAs facing uncertainty, I argue that pausing-and-funding responses don't fix the underlying pattern and that we're likely to repeat the same crisis again. I also say I feel sorry for the NCSE in this instance because they became the visible face of a policy they were implementing, and I argue the real issue sits higher up the chain. I then outline what I see as the structural problem: Ireland's primary schools are publicly funded but privately managed individual entities competing for enrolment, staff and survival, while staffing supports (SNA posts and SET hours) are allocated through a national, projection-based redistribution model. I describe how redistribution creates concentrated losers and dispersed winners, making it politically fragile, and I connect this to the annual “cluster games” around SET allocations. Finally, I set out the kind of structural change I think is needed: moving away from competition as the organising principle by exploring regional employment and local coordination through education authorities, because I don't believe repeated annual firefighting counts as planning. I also reference additional writing and commentary, including an Irish Independent piece by Fionnan Sheahan and analysis by Ciara Reilly, and I point listeners toward my Substack articles for more.00:00 Welcome and Subscribe00:47 SNA Allocations Fallout02:30 How the SNA Model Works04:28 From Freeze to Reviews07:59 Backlash and the Pause09:11 Predictable Crisis Cycle10:03 Relief and Real Stakes12:19 Why NCSE Took the Heat14:06 Schools Compete to Survive17:09 Redistribution vs Competition18:25 SET Cluster Games Parallel22:42 Politics and Concentrated Anger29:29 What Would Actually Change33:16 Final Thoughts and Goodbye This is a public episode. After catching up with Kristjan and Evan on their recent travels and conversations, Saskatchewan's Minister of Agriculture, David Marit, joins them on this episode of The Truth About Ag. David reflects on his path from farming near Fife Lake to municipal politics, leadership within the rural municipalities association, and ultimately cabinet. He speaks candidly about mentorship, the importance of surrounding yourself with strong people, and the responsibility that comes with representing agriculture at the federal-provincial table. The conversation quickly shifts to what is pressing on producers right now. Cost of production, return on investment, and the impact of trade disruptions sit at the centre. They discuss value-added processing and why expanding crush and processing capacity inside Saskatchewan changes the math for farmers. The discussion expands into research capacity, infrastructure gaps, and how Canada scales agricultural companies beyond small and mid-sized operations. There is also a clear focus on telling a better story about production practices, emissions performance, and the competitive advantage Western Canada already holds. Bank lending structures, grain storage capacity, business risk programs, crop insurance design, and how large farms fit within existing rules all come under the microscope. David shares his concerns about regulatory bottlenecks at the federal level and their impact on innovation and livestock movement.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Global Presence' – included a showcase of some of the current projects which are being fast-tracked to commercialisation, including advanced sensory detection devices to prevent falls in elderly people and intelligent devices to help control blood pressure. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless, T.D., said: "The ARC Hub for HealthTech has the potential to deliver game-changing acceleration of research commercialisation that will directly benefit individuals and communities in the West and North-West and further afield. As it continues to ramp up its operations and establish partnerships, the ARC Hub's ambitions are clear and far-reaching. I look forward to seeing the Hub progress in its endeavours, outputs and impact over the coming years." Dr Diarmuid O'Brien, Chief Executive of Taighde Éireann-Research Ireland, said: "The ARC Hub programme is one of the most proactive, imaginative and potentially disruptive programmes ever delivered by Research Ireland. Bringing together our leading researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and industry to create an environment where our best research ideas can be translated from the lab to the market represents an inclusive and scalable model for creating companies of the future." Peter Power, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland, said: "The ARC Hub for Health Technology is an operation of strategic importance under the European Regional Development Fund programme for the Northern and Western region. It aligns with the objective of EU Cohesion policy to support thriving innovation ecosystems for all regions. Thanks to the ARC Hub for Health Technology research will be translated into marketable products, thereby boosting the competitiveness of both the Northern and Western region and European competitiveness.'' President of University of Galway, Professor David Burn, said: "Today we are announcing more than a research and innovation entity – the ARC Hub for HealthTech is a remarkable opportunity to create a global powerhouse for healthcare in the Northern and Western regions of Ireland. With our partners and regional collaboration, we are seizing the moment to push the commercial impact of research with new supports, at a faster pace, with the overarching aim of bringing new healthcare, treatments and therapies to patients." President of Atlantic Technological University, Professor Orla Flynn, said: "ATU is delighted to be involved in the ARC Hub for HealthTech, working with our partners to advance healthtech research and innovation. Through this collaboration, we are supporting the development of new technologies, strengthening research and creating clearer pathways for bringing scientific discovery into real-world healthcare solutions. This week, in Jackson Township, Pennsylvania, when a Pastor's wife, who is also his singing act partner, dies in a seemingly tragic way, everybody has nothing but sympathy. But when a second wife also ends up dead, sympathy quickly turns into suspicion. That suspicion only grows, when people find out about the Minister's affairs, and lies. Did he really do such diabolical, and premeditated acts??? Along the way, we find out that cheaters often don't stop cheating, no matter what they say, that when your wife is seemingly dead, you shoudl definitely call 911, and that a homicide detectives job is to be "suspicious of everybody"!!
