The guest for this interview of Out of the Clouds is Siddha Jain, Chief Business Officer at Bombae, by Bombay Shaving Company, a premium women's personal care and grooming brand launched during the pandemic. Siddha is a savvy and creative executive who in her own words followed the expected track, first studying hard to first become an engineer, then obtaining an MBA, and later becoming a consultant at Bain & Company. Host Anne invites Siddha to talk about her story (hint: her goal is to prove herself). She explains how her mother imbued her with vision and taught her the value of being persistent. She then reveals her own vision, with the not-so-hidden aim to become an expert in other fields, essentially a ‘jack of all trades.' Siddha also brings her ikigai, the Japanese concept of having a sense of purpose, and shares how her passion for dance and creating events are extracurricular pursuits that connect her to the greater purpose of her life. The pair touch on Bombae's values and the content strategies that the brand uses to connect with its customers, including a collaboration with India's top women stand-up comedians. And, as a woman at the executive level, Siddha offers her thoughts about what helps her feel confident as well as how and why she brings her full self to work. Then Anne asks Siddha to talk about what it's like to build a brand and design products for a bold and cheeky consumer. Bombae's mission around hair removal is raised, which leads them to explore the complex relationship women in India and around the world have with their body and facial hair. A deeply engaging interview with a thoughtful and passionate woman. While working with US supermarket chain Safeway late in the first decade of this century, a young Prashant Parameswaran witnessed Peruvian ‘Quinoa' exploding in popularity to achieve superfood status in the country. Taking cue from this trend, Parameswaran asked himself if there was a way to make ancient millets like ragi, jowar and bajra relevant and popular in India again. Thus was born millet-based breakfast cereal and snack brand Soulfull, which Parameswaran started in 2011 upon returning to India. Before being acquired by Tata Consumer Products in 2021, Soulfull had placed itself as a niche brand with a strong focus on reinventing millets in a modern format. With a turnover of 39 crore rupees in FY20, Soulfull was reaching over 12,000 outlets by establishing a strong presence in select urban markets. Soulfull is among the several small brands with unique product propositions that have become targets for established FMCG companies. These are largely digital-first D2C companies that bypass the conventional method of multi-tier distribution structure, enabling faster go-to-market speed and greater control over customer data and experience. Over the past five years, legacy players have made a slew of investments in D2C startups. Marico has acquired men's grooming brand Beardo, beauty brand Just Herbs and breakfast brand True Elements. Similarly, Emami acquired vegan cosmetics brand Brillare Science and grooming brand The Man Company. It recently picked up a minority stake in nutrition company TruNativ. Colgate-Palmolive and Reckitt both hold minority stakes in Bombay Shaving Company, whereas Wipro Consumer Care has invested in The Ayurveda Company. ITC has invested in baby and mother care brands Mother Sparsh and Mylo. [Byte of Devangshu Dutta, CEO, Third Eyesight] New brands struggle to find shelf-space in modern trade and traditional retail channels. For them the growth of digital customers has enabled targeting specific customer segments and needs which are ignored by the established FMCG companies as being too small. Once they achieve a certain visibility and scale they become interesting to the larger companies, since rolling out the brands over the larger, physical footprint becomes more feasible. Incumbent players are either acquiring prominent D2C brands or choosing the organic route of launching their own brands online and building their own D2C platforms to reduce their reliance on marketplaces. Marico is working on a ‘house of brands' strategy by creating a portfolio of D2C companies through a mix of organic and inorganic routes. Meanwhile, Dabur estimates that its online-only D2C brands will cross 100 crore rupees in sales this fiscal. ITC currently sells over 700 products through its D2C store platform. D2C brands are estimated to become a $60 billion industry by FY27, growing at a CAGR of about 40%. At present D2C is a $12 billion market (above image). Institutional funding is helping D2C brands scale rapidly, with several of them crossing the 100-crore-rupee revenue mark within 3-5 years of launch. But what does this say about the ability of legacy FMCG companies to innovate? [Byte of Devangshu Dutta, CEO, Third Eyesight] Analysts say the strong background of founders of D2C companies, who are well-educated and armed with work experience in reputed firms, is an important factor in the success of such brands. The boom of D2C brands was supported by the development of logistic partners and the adoption of online payments. Improving digital penetration and high growth in e-commerce will help going ahead. D2C brands in the Beauty and Personal Care (BPC) and Food & Refreshments (F&R) space focus on niche ingredients and products, targeted at sub-categories ignored by established brands. Attractive packaging and strong digital marketing capabilities are key tailwinds for D2C brands. Such startups wanting to scale beyond a point will see their interest

With customers increasingly becoming more conscious about their preferences, they are demanding the same from their brands too. Gone are the days when you had to settle for a face wash or body scrub from one of the few available brands. Today, we have mCaffeine, a personal care direct-to-consumer, or D2C, brand that makes caffeine-based products, which it claims are vegan and hence more natural than the existing products in the market. Similarly, men's grooming has evolved as a niche market in itself. So we have Bombay Shaving Company offering solutions to men's grooming needs, such as shaving foams and razors, hair styling wax and even charcoal facial kits. There are other brands like Ustraa and Beardo in the same segment which are also making a deep cut. So, let us look at the difference between the D2C and traditional retailers. A traditional retailer would manufacture the product, sell it to a wholesaler, who would then have to rope in a distributor, and finally get their products at a retail store from where the consumer would buy it. HOW D2C PLAYERS WORK Make, market, sell and ship their products themselves, without middlemen Sell their products through their websites Use social media platforms to maintain consumer connect But D2C brands cut out the middleman. They manufacture their products, advertise them on the internet, and deliver them to consumers directly. By skipping this traditional fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sales route, D2C companies say they're able to offer better prices to customers while earning higher margins at the same time. It is also about striking the right connection. The D2C brands use social media to maintain lasting connection with their consumers. There is a direct feedback loop, from where they pick up on conversations happening online and also use social media influencers to create content for Instagram to sell their products. For instance, Bewakoof, which today is a full-stack fashion e-commerce platform, started in 2012 as a brand selling quirky mobile covers and other accessories. The brand has a feature called 'Vote for a design', where some of the company's designs are put out for vote by customers. Only the designs with a certain number of votes go into production; the rest are shelved. Bombay Shaving Company Founded: 2015 Founders: Deepu Panicker, Raunak Munot, Rohit Jaiswal, Shantanu Deshpande Category: Personal care Website: Bombayshavingcompany.com Funding raised: $17.7 Mn Bombay Shaving Company COO Deepak Gupta said this about the things that a D2C brand does differently: We don't work with any agencies Brand, performance marketing and design teams work together Teams demonstrate their agility to make quick changes to marketing campaigns based on feedback All marketing is done in-house Design team's performance is measured both on aesthetics and click-throughs D2C is a data science backed by consumer insights business Earlier last month, fresh meat and seafood brand Licious announced that it had become India's first D2C unicorn. India has about 600 D2C brands at present. And there seems to be no stopping the D2C rush. The sector was valued at over $1 billion as of the end of FY21 and according to an Avendus Capital report last year, it is expected to grow to $100 billion by 2025. FabAlley Founded: 2012 Founders: Shivani Poddar, Tanvi Malik Category: Fashion & apparel Website: faballey.com Funding raised: $18.7 Mn Shivani Poddar, co-founder and CEO of fashion brands FabAlley and Indya, highlighted how better data analytics was ensuring a nimble supply chain for D2C companies. She said: Selling direct to consumer helps get the right data about preferences, price points, etc In fashion, supply chains are very fast We need data analytics to figure out the items that are moving We assess reasons for customers' buying patterns D2C fashion supply chains more agile than l

How often do you see an entrepreneur's last employer putting equity in their idea? Well, this is exactly what happened with the guest of our today's episode, Shantanu Deshpande, Founder - Bombay Shaving Company. In 2015, when Shantanu decided to dominate the men's grooming space and he was quitting his job at McKinsey, then his peer's and seniors didn't just allow him to leave but decided to back him up with an initial Seed funding.Last year when the country went into lockdown, the company's revenues increased by 3x. One of the interesting driving factors behind this was the women employees at the company. Their perspective was very straightforward: # Problem Statement: During the lockdown, there was a shortage of women's hair removal products and razors. # Opportunity: They were working for a company, which made razors for a living. # Solution: These women employees then decided to coordinate with the product designers, test the product on themselves, put in their inputs, and get their own women's razor out in the market. With this the Bombay Shaving Company, which earlier had 27% women customers buying their products for the men in their life (i.e. partners, father, brother) as a gifting option, now had 50% orders coming in from women with a major share of them buying women's hair removal products. During the podcast, Shantanu shares with us what other tailwinds he leveraged during last year's lockdown, how he believes in enabling his investors to partially exit from the brand from time to time, and how he derives the best value from his large institutional investors.
