The discussion begins with an overview of California's current challenges, including record-breaking heatwaves and a controversial $100 million wildlife bridge in Agoura Hills that has faced significant budget overruns. The participants also examine the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, specifically focusing on allegations of political fraud and the lack of financial accountability for state spending. Shifting to international affairs, the dialogue addresses rising global tensions involving Iran and the potential for infrastructure attacks that could destabilize energy markets. Finally, Germanicus provides a historical critique of modern American military strategy, arguing that the nation has traded versatile combat readiness for a reliance on expensive, "exquisite" weaponry.

Why Daily Weigh-Ins Sabotage Progress + Drop Sets, VO2 Max, and Blue Collar Training . The hosts argue that frequent scale weigh-ins often sabotage progress because most people misinterpret weight fluctuations and let the number dictate mood, sharing client stories where the scale undermined visible body-composition improvements and reinforced unhealthy behavior. They discuss better metrics like performance, strength, sleep, and energy, and note how water retention, inflammation, and creatine can skew the scale and mirror. They also touch on "therians," rising California gas prices, mileage-tax proposals, and Tesla robo-taxi income ideas, plus peptide-market news and Vita Bella's membership model. Newt talks with Jack Salmon, Gibbs Scholar and Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. They discuss the introduction of wealth taxes in several U.S. states, including California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, and Washington, which are targeting high net worth individuals. This has led to a migration of wealthy individuals to states with no such taxes, like Florida and Texas. Washington State, which previously had no income tax, has introduced a 9.9% tax on income over a million dollars, contributing to a significant exodus of high earners, including notable figures like Jeff Bezos. Their discussion highlights the economic consequences of such tax policies, including the loss of tax revenue and potential negative impacts on local economies. The also discuss the importance of fiscal responsibility at the state level and the need for states to prepare for potential federal funding reductions based on the increasing national debt.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A multi-year megadrought in the Western U.S. has claimed untold populations of wild plants. Amid the conditions, some have survived. Scientists have produced a stunningly complete picture about how populations of one particular flower – the scarlet monkeyflower – made it through. In a new study published in the journal Science, a team of scientists spent decades studying and sampling select populations of scarlet monkeyflowers in California and Oregon. Through genetic sequencing, the team discovered that the populations that did best went through genetic changes in a short time period. This is known as rapid evolution. The team found that three of the populations that recovered the BEST adapted their stomata to open less, so they could conserve more water. Stomata act like a plant's pores, managing gas exchange and water loss. This allowed the scarlet monkeyflowers to hunker down in the drought and survive. Interested in more stories about rapid evolution? Turning to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, he said, "We didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" The conversation then shifted back to bilateral ties and Japan's role in global security. California is a state that God clearly favored. It has towering mountains, endless ocean coastlines, fertile valleys that feed half the country, tech trillions pouring out of Silicon Valley, Hollywood glamor that still captivates the world, and some of the richest farmland anywhere on earth. This place could literally print money if it wanted to. Instead, it has become the world's most expensive homeless encampment that increasingly resembles a third world country with better Instagram filters. In California, local officials poured $37 billion into the largest open-air drug market in America, built the most expensive train set that never left the toy store, turned the fifth-largest economy in the world into a foreign oil–dependent, price-gouged, blackout-prone laughingstock, and lit the state on fire, quite literally. Yet, if you only listened to Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Sacramento Democrats over the past decade, you'd believe it's all Donald Trump's fault, argues Drew Allen on this special video commentary.  Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever wondered if SEL (social and emotional learning) in school and classrooms really matters? I've been exploring this question a lot about over the past year, as well trying to understand the recent increase in parental and political pushback in the US specifically that is putting the future of SEL in schools at risk.   I wanted to get into a deep conversation about SEL for the show, and so I reached out Dr. Joseph Lee, a psychiatrist with a special interest in social and emotional learning and helping people achieve what he calls optimal mental healthiness. We had exactly the conversation I was hoping we would, as we got into so many important topics, including the state of children and young adult's mental health today, demystifying what SEL or social emotional learning actually is, why SEL matters, how it's best introduced in schools, the limitations in the current educational model for social emotional learning curriculums, what the pushback against SEL is really about, and what it's at stake if our children aren't provided with social and emotional learning opportunities. I think this is such an important and timely conversation – I hope that you enjoy it and that you help me amplify this episode by sharing it in your communities.   About Dr. Joseph Lee Dr. Joseph Lee, MD., is a Psychiatrist in private practice in Redondo Beach, California. He is also an educator in social and emotional learning (SEL) and provides individual and group supervision to licensed therapists looking to add mental healthiness and SEL principles to their own practices. Dr. Lee has a medical doctorate from University Of California, Los Angeles, School Of Medicine.   Key Takeaways Dr. Joseph Lee's thoughts on the state of children and young adult's mental health today What SEL or social emotional learning actually is and why it matters Ways that SEL can be weaved into traditional educational curriculum, as well as the use of specific SEL curriculum What social and emotional learning inside schools looks like in practice The “why” behind the pushback against SEL in the recent years and what's it's at stake if we lose the ability to teach SEL in classrooms  Resources Mentioned Mental Healthiness / Dr. Joseph Lee's website Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Dr. Joseph Lee & Mental Healthiness on Facebook Dr. Joseph Lee on Twitter Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness (Ken Burns documentary) Daniel Goleman Emotional Intelligence: Why it Can Matter More Than IQ by Daniel Goleman Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships by Daniel Goleman U.S. Surgeon General Issues Advisory on Youth Mental Health Crisis Further Exposed by COVID-19 Pandemic Parenting the New Teen with Dr. John Duffy (Tilt Parenting Podcast episode) Learn more about your ad choices. Traveling around, I've become aware of how Pacific Northwest rain is different from rain patterns in other regions of the US. Take Texas, for example. Texas rain pours. Houses don't have gutters there, presumably because they can't engineer them large enough to accommodate the deluges reliably. Storm water infrastructure is three times the size of what I see around here. In contrast, Oregon rain is persistent. Drizzle can last for days. It's kind of like the tortoise and the hare, I guess. This soundscape was recorded in Forest Park last year around this time, on a dead-end, unnamed trail that doesn't see a lot of use, but nonetheless features a sturdy old bench. It is a pretty sweet listening spot for this reason, and this particular time slice offers a pretty accurate sound portrait of our soft rain. Our soft power. Did you know that the Pacific Temperate Rainforest—a bioregion extending from the northern California redwoods to the coastal forests along the gulf of Alaska—can pack more carbon per acre than a tropical rainforest like the Amazon? The Pacific Temperate Rainforest is the second-most dense biomass repository and carbon sink in the world (bested only by the Eucalyptus regnant forests of Victoria and Tasmania, Australia) and it's what gives our Pacific Northwest rain its unique character (and sound). The Pacific Temperate Rainforest operates like a giant lung. Just as a lung draws in air, extracts what's vital, and releases what the body needs to stay alive, the Pacific Temperate Rainforest breathes on a continental scale, pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and locking it away in massive old-growth trunks, roots, and the deep organic soils beneath them, while exhaling oxygen and releasing moisture that cycles inland as rain. The forest doesn't just store carbon passively; it actively pumps water vapor into the atmosphere, seeding clouds and feeding rivers that sustain salmon, which in turn fertilize the forest floor when they die. It's a closed loop where nothing is wasted.Spring Shower is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms Friday, March 20th, 2026. The emancipatory potential and limits of land justice, when land is at once home, property, territory, and homeland. Peasant farming was once an integral part of Palestine's agrarian fabric. But after military occupation of the West Bank in 1967, Israeli land confiscations and economic policies pushed rural cultivators into wage labor. In recent decades, Palestinian land titling and private developers have driven the slow transformation of agricultural land into real estate. In Plots and Deeds: Agrarian Annihilation and the Fight for Land Justice in Palestine (Stanford UP, 2026) Paul Kohlbry argues that we should see these changes as part of a larger process of agrarian annihilation, one in which state violence and market coercion together devastate the social, ecological, and economic relationships that make agrarian livelihoods possible. Kohlbry tells the story of those who, refusing annihilation, struggle both for the return of land, and for their return to it. Through long-term engagements in the central highlands of the West Bank, Kohlbry shows how peasant practices and ethics matter for those fighting to rebuild collective attachments to rural places, and the surprising ways that property ownership has become a means of both land dispossession and defense. Going beyond accounts that treat the peasant as a tragic figure or a heroic national symbol, Kohlbry foregrounds the complexity of agrarian life to reveal the relationships between agrarian regeneration and political liberation—ultimately connecting Palestine within a global struggle for land justice. Paul Kohlbry is Assistant Professor of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. 1. California Firearm Advertising Law Struck Down California agreed to a settlement exceeding $1.3 million in attorney fees after losing a lawsuit over its “marketing firearms to minors” law. The law effectively banned most firearm advertising, arguing it could appeal to minors. The lawsuit was brought by the Second Amendment Foundation, Firearms Policy Coalition, and other plaintiffs. Core Argument Presented The law violated the First Amendment by banning truthful, lawful advertising. It was also framed as an indirect attempt to undermine the Second Amendment by financially crippling gun stores. 2. Ninth Circuit Ruling and Judicial Reasoning A Ninth Circuit judge (Judge Lee, September 2023) ruled against the law. The opinion stated: The law did not materially advance California’s goal of reducing gun violence. There was no evidence minors had illegally purchased firearms due to advertising. The court highlighted a contradiction: California allows minors to use firearms legally (e.g., hunting, sport shooting), Yet banned advertising about those same lawful activities. 3. Governor Gavin Newsom Criticism Governor Newsom is portrayed as acting emotionally and irrationally, particularly over: A .22 caliber rifle designed for youth shooters. The text argues: Youth firearms are legally owned by parents, not children. Such firearms are common for hunting and training. The financial cost to taxpayers is emphasized as a political failure. 4. Broader National Implications The case is framed as a warning to other states: Similar laws will fail and result in costly defeats. The victory is presented as: A win for constitutional rights A success made possible only by organizations with “deep pockets” 5. Shift to Federal Politics: The SAVE Act The second half shifts focus to the U.S. Senate debate over the SAVE Act. The bill is framed as an election integrity measure. Core premise: “Only American citizens should decide American elections.” 6. President Trump’s Leadership Role Trump is portrayed as: Personally directing the strategy Pressuring Republicans to unify Making the bill a top priority The effort is described as deliberate and strategic, not symbolic. 7. Republican vs. Democrat Contrast Republicans: Unified On offense Advocating for voter ID and proof of citizenship Democrats: Described as unanimously opposed Framed as defending an “impossible” position The debate is positioned as a midterm election defining issue. Add Chief Judges of Federal Districts who control all criminal grand juries to the growing list of our justice system stakeholders, along with Grand Juries, juries, and even some assistant US Attorneys, who are refusing to allow Trump to indict his political critics or enemies, just because he wants to punish or embarrass them, or to score cheap political points. At this point, the DOJ can't even do the most basic thing: Get a grand jury subpoena to survive judicial review. Michael Popok ties together results, in DC, NY, Virginia, Florida and California against the backdrop of the Chief Judge of DC making a historic, once in a lifetime ruling, that the US DOJ cannot be trusted and have brought a criminal prosecution against the Federal Reserve Chair in bad faith to harass him and force him to resign, not because a crime eis likely to have been committed. Across our U.S. public lands are more than 130 national monuments, each protecting a unique natural or cultural treasure. In this episode, we're diving into ten that feel a lot like visiting a national park, but without the crowds. We share a mix of places we've visited over the years, and each one surprised us with just how much they have in terms of scenery, hiking, and overall experience. From towering rock formations and remote desert canyons to cultural sites with deep historical meaning, these monuments offer many of the same “wow” moments you expect from a national park. In this episode, we talk about: Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming and why it's always worth a stop, Grand Staircase–Escalante in Utah and its endless options for adventure, Canyon de Chelly in Arizona and one of our favorite ranger-led tours, Chiricahua National Monument and its maze of rock spires, Natural Bridges National Monument and its out-of-this-world natural beauty, Colorado National Monument as an underrated scenic gem, Bandelier in New Mexico and its fascinating cultural history, Lava Beds in California (yes, caves… again), Rainbow Bridge and its surprisingly powerful setting, and Jewel Cave in South Dakota and its incredible underground world. If you've ever felt like the national parks are getting a little too crowded, or you're just looking for new places to explore, this episode will give you a list of destinations that deserve a spot on your radar. Are your vitamins causing nerve pain? Discover the vitamins that worsen nerve pain and peripheral neuropathy, why certain nerve pain vitamins make matters worse, and what you can do to fix it.0:00 Introduction: Vitamins that worsen nerve pain0:12 Vitamin B6 1:59 Vitamin B12 4:17 Vitamin B1 deficiency and peripheral neuropathy4:35 Nerve pain vitamins 5:39 Alpha-lipoic acid for peripheral neuropathy6:41 Avoiding vitamins that worsen nerve pain Download Dr. Berg's Free Daily Health Routine: https://drbrg.co/45qtO07If it seems that your vitamins are making nerve pain worse, the solution might be simple. Vitamin B6 is vital in neurotransmission, but must be converted to its active form through the liver. Unconverted vitamin B6 can accumulate in the body and affect the nervous system if your liver is sluggish, if you don't have enough bile, or if you're low in glutathione. Inflammation, high blood sugar, and low magnesium can also inhibit your ability to make this conversion. Most vitamin B12 supplements contain cyanocobalamin, which is useless unless converted into the active form, methylcobalamin. Vitamin B1 is vital in supporting the mitochondria and the myelin sheath. Low vitamin B1 is a common cause of peripheral neuropathy. Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 are water-soluble vitamins, so they can't easily penetrate the brain and myelin sheath. Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1 that can penetrate the myelin sheath to help reverse peripheral neuropathy. Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant that can help with peripheral neuropathy, support mitochondrial function, and improve insulin sensitivity. Key takeaways:1. Use the right forms of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, and vitamin B122. Don't go over 50 mg per day3. Ensure you have enough bile4. Consume fermented foods5. Make sure your insulin is balanced6. Don't forget about alpha-lipoic acidDr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.
