Hello! And welcome to The Dana Gould Hour podcast. Fasten your fun belts, we are blasting off, yet again. We are joined today by legends. You heard me. Mark Frost is a legendary writer, first in television. He started out on The Six Million Dollar Man, moved on to Hill Street Blues, co-created Twin Peaks with David Lynch. In motion pictures, he wrote and directed the film Storyville, he wrote the 2005 The Fantastic Fourand its sequel Rise Of The Silver Surfer and he has a new book out entitled Yankee Sphinx, which tells the story of FDR from just before America's involvement in World War II up through his death. It's told through the eyes of FDR's Great Uncle, Will Hasset, who worked as FDR's speech writer and press attaché, one might say. We cover a lot of topics and a lot of ground and I am super happy that Mr. Frost sat down and gave me his time. Gary Rhodes is a writer and film historian who has written, among many other titles, a multi-volume set on the strange life and career of Bela Lugosi. He's written about Ed Wood, he wrote the book Horror At The Drive In, Essays In Popular Americana and he has an excellent new book out entitled Weirdumentary: Ancient Aliens, Fallacious Prophecies and Mysterious Monsters from 1970's Documentaries. Before streaming, before cable, before the History Channel and Ancient Aliens, these topics were explored in documentaries at your local Cineplex. Many were produced by the late great, Sunn Classic Pictures. UFOs, Elvis, Bigfoot, they're all here, in the pages of Weirdumentary, and we're a-gonna talk about it. And now, it's on, to our filthy business.
Theo Von joins the guys this week to talk all about Busboys, Little House on the Prairie, and singing with Ella Langley at Stagecoach. We're talking about the Earth, Wind, & Fire documentary, and the wild story of this funky 70s band. We discuss the insane hypocrisy of Tyra Banks suing Netflix over the America's Next Top Model documentary in which she participated. Turns out, it's not fun to be at the mercy of editors trying to tell a particular story. A woman got a tattoo of her child's name, but there was a typo, and her solution is WILD. We celebrate the pianist who got the chance of a lifetime to perform when the pro keyboardist fell ill at a concert. We debate the question of custody of an embryo in the event of a divorce. Susie talks about a mummy whose gut was growing yeast, and we are not happy with what the scientists decided to do with it. We'll give you one dumb guess.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Download HILY Dating App from the App Store or Google Play, or visit https://hily.comGo to https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDY for an exclusive offer of 20% off your first order.Visit https://www.carawayhome.com/braincandypod to take an additional 10% off using code BRAINCANDYPOD on your next purchase.TDM-RESERVATION: 1. A new peer-reviewed study of nationwide German data finds suspected adverse-event reports for COVID-19 vaccines were sharply elevated in the earliest weeks of rollout, then fell suddenly. The authors call it a possible batch-dependent safety signal. Danish physician Dr. Vibeke Manniche, the study's lead author and the only Danish doctor to speak out publicly against lockdowns from the start, joins to break down the findings. Published in the International Journal of Risk & Safety in Medicine, the analysis covers the first three and a half years of Germany's vaccination campaign. For one product, early-rollout reporting rates were roughly 80 times higher than the rates seen just weeks later. Dr. Manniche also makes the case for why the US could learn from Denmark's childhood vaccine schedule. Filmmaker Michael Pack, president of Palladium Pictures, discusses their new WSJ Opinion documentary “The Lockdown Dissidents.” Director Rand Courtney speaks on “La Lucha: Getting Schooled in America,” which follows five teens through poverty, trauma, and a broken school system. Dr. Drew is featured in the film. Dr. Vibeke Manniche, MD, PhD, is a Danish physician and author of 35 books on children, family, sleep, and medicine. Ruby Wrenn, co-host of Bad TV podcast, joins Kate to break down Million Dollar Nannies on Hulu. Million Dollar Nannies (Hulu / Freeform) follows a group of eight young, elite nannies, including an ex-Kardashian-Jenner family nanny, a New York City "manny" with a social media following, and a professional dancer. They head to Ibiza to launch a luxury childcare agency catering to the world's wealthiest families. They're promised VIP clients, life-changing money, and a shot at building something bigger than any of them could do alone. But the competition for placements is cutthroat, the client expectations are absurd (text updates every twenty minutes, round-the-clock availability, strict NDAs), and personal drama and a scandal from the past threaten to blow the whole thing up before summer ends. Now streaming on Hulu. Rebecca Gitlitz is the two-time Emmy-winning director of Chris & Martina: The Final Set, the new Netflix documentary about Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Beyond the Wire, a new, thought-provoking documentary by filmmaker and researcher Dr. S. Rasheem, offers an indespensible representation of "The Greatest City in America" and a powerful counternarrative to the popular crime series The Wire. In this exclusive interview for Rattling the Bars, host Mansa Musa speaks with Dr. Rasheem about how her background in community organizing compelled her to tell a different story of Baltimore—one focused on boots-on-the-ground activism that defies the narrative of a hopeless, crime-ridden city in need of over-policing.Producer / Videographer / Editor: Cameron GranadinoBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-real-news-podcast--2952221/support.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Follow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetworkBecome a member and join the Supporters Club for The Real News Podcast today!

Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to eight murders. His ex-wife and children reportedly received over a million dollars from a Peacock documentary about the case. The families of the women he killed received nothing. New York has a Son of Sam law. It doesn't apply here — because the current version only covers the convicted person, not their family. Lawmakers have pushed to close that gap since 2023. The bills have not passed. That's one of the questions the audience brought. The others go deeper. Asa Ellerup gutted the basement where Rex admitted to dismembering seven women, redecorated it, and moved in. She told documentary cameras it was a spiritual gesture. She has continued visiting Rex in jail. Victoria Heuermann says she believes her father most likely did it. Same information, same household, completely different responses.Robin Dreeke spent decades analyzing human behavior for the FBI. He joins Tony Brueski to walk through the listener questions that hit hardest — from the kill room to the documentary money to the DNA evidence linking the household to all seven victims' remains. What does loyalty look like after a confession? What does denial look like when the evidence is sitting on the kitchen table? The audience asked. (Jun 23, 2026) The end of this year's legislative session saw the departure of more than a dozen state lawmakers, including some longtime Upstate lawmakers who have left their mark on the Capitol; a new documentary tells the story of the oil spill on the St. Lawrence River in the words of those who lived it; and we have a preview of today's North Country at Work event in Ticonderoga.
Send us a message. We open on what a trip does to you once you're home. Time away, then the return, where the familiar looks sharper and the work feels urgent again. That sets up the thread running through the whole episode: the difference between a trip planned down to the hour and one you make up as you go, and why the unplanned kind tends to leave the stronger memory. No itinerary, no booked room, just landing somewhere and letting it unfold. From there we get into friction: the small obstacles we put in our own way to avoid doing the things we actually want to do, and how clearing them is most of the work. That carries into gear. The pull to bring everything, the freedom of bringing almost nothing, and the old principle that a fraction of your tools does most of the lifting. What sits in front of the camera matters more than what's in the bag.The back half settles on one question: when does skill start working against the work? Too controlled, too finished, no room for the accident that makes a thing feel alive. We talk about how constraints, small budgets and short schedules, can produce better work than freedom does, and why mastery alone isn't the whole story. If it were, the most experienced would always make the best thing, and they don't. We close on keeping expectations small enough to leave room for chance, plus a sweet interruption from home. -AiSupport the show If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. Long before Bourbon became synonymous with Bardstown and Frankfort, Lawrenceburg was home to a network of distillers whose names helped shape the industry itself. Families like the Ripys, Hawkins, Bonds, McBrayers, and Dowlings built businesses, mentored one another, and left a legacy that still echoes across Kentucky whiskey today. In this episode, Drew Hannush talks with filmmaker Bo Cumberland and Stone Fences Tours co-founder Jerry Daniels about their new documentary, Spirits of Lawrenceburg: A Bourbon Legacy Forged Through Time, and why one of Bourbon's most influential communities deserves to be remembered. In This Episode • Why Lawrenceburg became one of the cradles of Bourbon • The forgotten names behind familiar brands • Old Joe Peyton and the rise of Old Joe Distillery • How distilling families became intertwined • Why the Ripys reached far beyond Wild Turkey • Lost distilleries hidden beneath modern landscapes • Oral tradition and the challenge of preserving history • How a documentary brings vanished places back to life • Why Lawrenceburg still matters to Bourbon today Find show notes and transcripts at whiskeylore.org/interviews
In 2006, Ohio State medical student Brian Shaffer walked into a crowded Columbus bar at the start of spring break — and was never seen again. The cameras showed him near the Ugly Tuna Saloona shortly before closing time. They showed him talking casually near the entrance. They showed him turn away. But they never clearly showed him leaving. What followed became one of the most baffling missing person cases in modern Ohio true crime: searches of the South Campus Gateway complex, theories about hidden exits and blind spots, questions about foul play, accident, voluntary disappearance, and a family left waiting for answers that still have not come. This episode of Terrifying & True investigates the disappearance of Brian Shaffer, the Ohio State medical student who vanished from Columbus on April 1, 2006. We examine the final surveillance footage, the search efforts, the role of camera blind spots, the theories that have followed the case for nearly two decades, and the human heartbreak behind one of America's most haunting unsolved mysteries.Brian Shaffer was not a legend. He was a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a future doctor, and a grieving young man standing at the edge of the rest of his life. Then, somewhere between a crowded bar and the outside world, he disappeared. We're telling that story tonight.

On October 15, 2022, four college wrestlers hiked into Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest to hunt for shed antlers. They never saw the grizzly coming. When the bear attacked, one teammate made a split-second decision that would later earn him North America's highest civilian honor for heroism—and leave both young men fighting for their lives on a remote mountainside. With a broken arm and hundreds of stitches between them, getting off that mountain would take everything they had, and everyone they came with. This is a story about what happens when training, instinct, and brotherhood collide with the raw power of the wild. 00:00 Welcome to The Crux 00:38 Grizzly Charge Cold Open 01:35 Meet the Wrestlers 03:49 Split Up on the Trail 04:33 Brady Gets Mauled 06:35 Kendall Runs In 10:25 Second Attack and Silence 11:28 911 Call and Rescue Push 16:15 Hospital and Injury Breakdown 19:37 Bear Spray Lessons 20:47 Recovery and Hero Medal 22:30 Documentary and Facing Bears Again 24:12 Bear Spray vs Firearms Data 27:18 Practical Bear Country Tips 29:17 Bonus Bear in the House 30:56 Final Takeaway and Wrap Up 32:40 Outro and Listener Support Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ REFERENCES CNN — "College wrestlers mauled in gruesome grizzly bear attack" (October 20, 2022) ESPN — "Northwest College wrestlers hospitalized after bear attack" (October 19, 2022) ABC News — "Wyoming college wrestlers recount near-death fight with grizzly bear" (October 19, 2022) NBC News — "Two college wrestlers injured in grizzly bear attack while hunting in Wyoming" (October 18, 2022) CBS Sports — "Wyoming college wrestler saves teammate from being mauled by grizzly bear" (October 19, 2022) Deseret News — "Grizzly bear attacks two college wrestlers in Wyoming" (October 17, 2022) FloWrestling — "Northwest College Wrestlers Recovering After 'Horrifying' Bear Attack" (October 19, 2022) Cowboy State Daily — "Highest Heroism Award For Wyoming Wrestler Who Saved Teammate From Grizzly" (March 25, 2024) Cowboy State Daily — "There's More To Kendell Cummings Than Being The Guy Who Wrestled A Grizzly" (March 26, 2024) KTVQ — "Northwest College wrestlers 'in face of adversity, made it through' months after grizzly bear attack" (February 27, 2024) Powell Tribune — "Northwest College wrestler honored for extraordinary heroism" (March 28, 2024) Carnegie Hero Fund Commission — "17 recognized by Carnegie Hero Fund for saving others from peril" (March 2024) East Idaho News — "Young man who saved friend during grizzly bear attack among 17 receiving prestigious national honor" (April 7, 2024) KSL — "Man who saved friend during grizzly attack receives prestigious national honor" (2024) Wyoming Game and Fish Department Statement (October 2022) Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The barrier to making your first film has never been lower, and this episode breaks down exactly how to start. In Part 2 of his conversation with host Gregg Goldfarb, filmmaker Steve Dabal pulls back the curtain on how his documentary Italian Wannabe came together: shot largely on a phone, edited by hand from terabytes of footage, and finished through community crowdfunding. Steve makes the case that you don't need a perfect subject or a big budget to begin. You need a story you care about and the willingness to start filming. From the free tools that turn a phone into a cinema camera, to why short films are the best reps a beginner can get, to how AI is quietly reshaping what independent filmmakers can afford, Steve offers a grounded look at the craft and the business of documentary work today, and why "make the thing" matters far more than worrying about how it will be received. Join Gregg and Steve on Cut to the Chase as they explore: How to shoot a documentary for $0 using just an iPhone and free apps Why the story "reveals itself" and how to start before you know the ending Why short films are the best training ground for first-time filmmakers The realistic path to a finished film: rough cuts, community, and crowdfunding How AI is changing the cost of color, graphics, and finishing work Why the festival system favors certain films, and how feel-good stories find their audience What comes after festivals: roadshows, screenings-with-dinners, and t-urning a film into an event KEY MOMENTS 00:00 — Cold open: which films "climb the ladder" 00:01 — You've got a story and an iPhone — what do you actually need? 00:02 — The Blackmagic app: turning a phone into a cinema camera 00:03 — "Just start filming" — 14 terabytes and finding the story 00:04 — Do you really need a great subject to begin? 00:06 — Making the thing vs. releasing the thing 00:07 — Why short films are the best reps for beginners 00:09 — The money question: what $0 can (and can't) get you 00:10 — Rough cuts, honest feedback & the freelance colorist 00:12 — Spend $0 first, then crowdfund the finish 00:13 — AI and YouTube: best or worst time to start? 00:14 — Handmade stop-motion vs. AI temp graphics 00:15 — Inside the festival world: programmers & blind submissions 00:17 — Pairing screenings with dinners to build community 00:18 — What's next: roadshows, AI outreach & the film-as-event 00:21 — Closing: stop chasing the checklist — just make the thing Steve Dabal is an Italian-American director, cinematographer, and editor with a deep VFX background and a focus on non-fiction storytelling. As co-founder and Creative Director of The Family, a New York-based production house, he has interviewed subjects ranging from Scarlett Johansson and Fortune 500 CEOs to war veterans and 9/11 survivors. His work has screened at SXSW, the New York Film Festival, and internationally. Italian Wannabe is his debut feature documentary. The film sold out five screenings at the 2026 Palm Springs International Film Festival and was also an official selection at the Berkshire International Film Festival. At 38 years old, Katie Delimon opened a DNA test expecting to confirm what she'd always believed about her heritage. Instead, she discovered the man who raised her wasn't her biological father, and that the truth had been hiding in plain sight her entire life. A man her family called "the beach guy," someone she'd actually described as "creepy" in her first memoir, turned out to be her biological father. Both he and her mother had already passed away, leaving Katie with questions no one alive could fully answer. When she started making calls, the responses stunned her, one aunt admitted she'd known since Katie was four years old and never said a word. Katie is a trauma-informed coach and keynote speaker. Her bestselling memoir is Trust the Flames. Gregg Allman lived inside the central contradiction of American music — a white Southern kid who built his art on the blues, fled his demons while pouring them into song, and emerged as one of rock's most essential voices. Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul traces that journey from a childhood shattered by his father's murder to the soulful authority the Allman Brothers Band carved out through relentless touring and hard-won survival.Mike talks with director James Keach — whose previous documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me earned an Oscar nomination — and producer Michael Lehman, Allman's longtime manager, about the making of an honest film about a complicated man. They discuss the archival footage, the band's quietly radical racial politics, and the personal losses — Duane's death, the addiction years, the very public marriage to Cher — that gave the music its weight.Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul opens in theaters June 17, 2026.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Billy Binion (reporter at Reason Magazine) joins host Ron Steslow to examine how democratic governments are redefining speech as a harm to be managed and who pays the price when they do. They begin with the White House's negotiation with Senator Marsha Blackburn, a deal that would trade federal preemption of state AI laws for the Kids Online Safety Act, the No Fakes Act, and federal age verification, and whether we are “one bad deal away from the era of online government censorship.” Next, Britain's thousands of arrests each year for online posts, its mandate that Apple and Google build content scanning into every device, and Signal's vow to exit the market before that happens. Then they turn to the killing of Henry Novak, whose dying words police discounted in deference to his killer's fabricated racism accusation. Finally, they unpack Minnesota's multibillion-dollar benefits fraud—JD Vance's referral of Tim Walz and Keith Ellison, why warnings went unheeded, and the citizen journalist who made the scandal impossible to ignore. In Politicology+, they discuss the bipartisan push to force UFO disclosure and the legal fight underneath it: whether the government should use eminent domain to seize allegedly recovered non-human technology from private contractors, and whether contractor employees who come forward deserve whistleblower protections.
