Richard Elliott, a deputy manager in residential childcare in England, talks about his mother's childhood inside a Catholic convent and, later, a Catholic laundry in the north of England during the mid-twentieth century. Richard describes his mother's four years of separation from her family and her sisters as a child, her return home, an attack by a boyfriend at fifteen that led to her being sent away a second time, and two years of unpaid labor inside a Catholic laundry with no contact with her family. Richard also discusses discovering the full extent of his mother's story only recently, while interviewing her for a book they wrote together, and how his own work in residential childcare has changed the way he understands her. The conversation closes on Richard's petition calling on the UK government to open a public inquiry into the treatment of children in Catholic institutions in England. Richard and his mother published their book under the pen name M. Duffy. It is titled In My Own Words: Memories of the Catholic Convents and is available on Amazon. The spoken languages in Hong Kong and Taiwan differ, with Cantonese being spoken in Hong Kong and Mandarin preferred in Taiwan, but the two territories use traditional Chinese characters for reading and writing. This has created a strong bond between them in the field of book publishing, with many books which are published in Taiwan being sold in Hong Kong. This year, authorities in Hong Kong have cracked down on booksellers under national security laws. Hong Kong's government argues they are necessary steps to maintain stability in the territory, but critics say they're crushing dissent. Concern is now being felt in the publishing industry in Taiwan. Joyce Li from BBC Chinese is based in Taipei, and Abel U, also from BBC Chinese, is based in Hong Kong, and they join to share their insights.Since 2024, a neighborhood in the Moroccan capital of Rabat has been undergoing demolition and eviction operations carried out by Moroccan authorities. Residents have been left uncertain about their futures, and the lack of transparency has also left people questioning what the real reasons are, behind the demolition campaign. Hanan Razek from BBC Arabic, has been following the story and speaking to locals.The last day of exams is always a big deal. The story of the Kissel brothers, two wealthy siblings murdered on opposite sides of the world within three years of each other. Robert Kissel, a Merrill Lynch executive in Hong Kong, was killed by his wife Nancy in November 2003 in a case that became known internationally as the Milkshake Murder. Less than three years later, his older brother Andrew, a Greenwich, Connecticut real estate developer facing federal fraud charges, was found stabbed to death in his own home. This episode covers both cases in full: the collapse of Robert and Nancy's marriage inside Hong Kong's expatriate finance world, Nancy's two trials and her conviction, overturned conviction, and second conviction, and the murder-for-hire investigation into who killed Andrew, including the eventual pleas, verdicts, and the question of who actually held the knife. The Fan After Dark gets started in Hour 1 with some Newy Scruggs guest star action!

John Henion, director of Netflix's new documentary Untold: The Testimony of Vince Young, joins the show to unpack the rise and fall of the Texas Longhorns legend, from his childhood in Houston's Hiram Clarke neighborhood, raised by his mother and grandmother while his father was in and out of prison, through his legendary run at Texas under Mack Brown, and into the conflict-riddled NFL career that followed. On January 4th, 2006, Vince Young delivered what's still argued to be the greatest individual performance in college football history, 467 total yards and a game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left, beating USC to give Texas its first national title in 35 years, and the Rose Bowl made him a legend. Years later, the two married, and Mica became a prominent presence in his church. Eric Steel's The Bridge  This week Mr. Chavez & I continue our dive into challenging films examining difficult subjects. In 2004 director Eric Steel and his crew focused his camera - day and night/7 days a week - on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Since it's opening in May of 1937, the bridge has been one of the most popular suicide sites in the world. Steel's film attempts to understand the struggle of suicide and (rather unsuccessfully) the appeal of The Golden Gate Bridge for this purpose. Talking with family and friends, friends and loved ones, and in one case a survivor of the jump, Steel's film is a sad and troubling look into the reality of choosing to end one's life. The psychology of suicide is not given nearly enough focus and Steel's film feels empty and unfocused. But what is there . . . the discussions from friends and loved ones, the regret, acceptance, and confusement revealed are heartbreaking. As is often the case with this podcast, the film is a starting point for a discussion that will go far deeper than the film achieves. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Since 1968, they have chronicled some of the most pivotal movements in human history and continue to expand on their collection of over 700 titles. There's lots to learn about how they've adapted through technological revolutions, political persecutions, philanthropic booms and busts — and how the oldest media arts collective in the U.S. is making do in today's “media carnage”, as Laura Flanders puts it. Joining us are JT Takagi, an independent filmmaker, sound recordist, and the longtime executive director of Third World Newsreel. Tami Gold is an artist and activist whose documentaries grapple with everything from imperialism to sex work. Her films include My Country Occupied, Another Brother and Land Rain Fire among many more. Puerto Rican-born Juan Carlos Dávila works in film as well as TV, where he reports on social movements around environmentalism, militarism and the struggles of the working class on the island. His films include The Stand-By Generation, Viequez: An Endless Battle and Drills of Liberation. Kyle Bylin was switched at birth with Jeremy Morrison in a small North Dakota hospital, and did not learn the truth until he was 36 years old. The discovery came after a years-long trail of Ancestry DNA matches that did not add up, leading him to Morrison's biological aunt. That connection confirmed it: Bylin and Morrison, the only two babies born at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, on January 26, 1988, had gone home with each other's bracelets. On this Saturday Series episode, Kate Casey talks with Bylin, who was raised in Adams, North Dakota, by Evelyn Newton and Keith Bylin, about meeting his biological parents, Elizabeth O'Toole and Terry Morrison, for the first time as an adult, the unexpected traits and interests he shares with his biological family, and the identity questions the discovery raised after decades of a settled sense of self. He also discusses what it means to now navigate two sets of parents and the loss that comes with each. Bylin and Morrison's families have since filed a lawsuit against the hospital, which denies responsibility and says records from 1988 no longer exist. Bylin works as an assessment and research librarian and hosts the podcast Infinite Stream, about the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education.
