Learn more at getitdonemarketing.com. Burton Heiss is the CEO of Escapology. With a rich background in the restaurant industry, including leadership roles at Baja Fresh, Wagamama, Nando's, and Buddy's Pizza, Burton brings a business-savvy approach to the world of escape rooms. His career has been centered around high-growth, brand-led companies, which made Escapology—a fast-growing escape room franchise with a strong emphasis on brand identity—a natural next step. In this interview, Burton talks about brand-led businesses, disconnect to reconnect, and the future of escape rooms. Brand-Led Businesses “I always want to work someplace where when I get on the airplane, I don't put a piece of paper in my pocket to cover up the logo.” Burton explains that brand-led businesses have a distinct identity that resonates emotionally with consumers, unlike commodity-driven models. He points out that a brand like Disney evokes excitement and emotional connection, while a commodity might be viewed as interchangeable or forgettable. From a leadership standpoint, he emphasizes that it's easier to rally a team around a brand that stands for something. Employees feel a sense of pride when the brand on their shirt is something others recognize and admire. That internal passion, he says, is contagious and helps permeate enthusiasm throughout the organization. Transitioning from restaurants to attractions, Burton notes that although the escape room industry is relatively new, the foundational leadership principles remain the same. “Leadership is leadership,” he says, emphasizing that strong team culture and strategic planning are transferable across industries when they're rooted in purpose and clarity. Disconnect to Reconnect “What escape rooms offer you is the opportunity to disconnect from your device and reconnect with your friends and family.” Burton describes a key differentiator of escape rooms: the opportunity to truly unplug and engage in a meaningful, shared activity. At a time when screens dominate daily life, Escapology encourages people to step into immersive environments that demand teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. This idea of “disconnect to reconnect” isn't just a catchy phrase—it's central to the guest experience. He also addresses common misconceptions that may prevent people from trying an escape room, such as fears of being physically locked in. Escapology aims to overcome that barrier with inviting locations in mainstream retail environments and licensed IP like Scooby-Doo and Batman. These approachable themes lower the intimidation factor and encourage first-timers to take the leap. Once they do, he says, most guests are hooked by the joy and adrenaline of the experience. The Future of Escape Rooms “We want to continue to make things feel seamless, that they just happen… Technology is a great way to do that.” Looking ahead, Burton sees the future of escape rooms becoming increasingly immersive and emotionally resonant. He notes a shift from puzzle-centric gameplay to experiences that prioritize atmosphere and storytelling. Recent games like Haunted House and Pirate's Curse focus heavily on set design and narrative, offering guests more than just a mental challenge—they're stepping into a different world. Innovation will also come in the form of technology integration, but with intentionality. Escapology uses tech to support the story rather than distract from it, aiming for those moments of awe and surprise—like a magic trick that leaves guests wondering how it all worked. As the industry grows, Burton predicts greater consolidation and sophistication, with larger players like Escapology leading the charge by investing in high-quality game development and expanding their franchise model worldwide. The Mountain Mile is continuing to grow, this time with a fun attraction that will challenge your mind and problem-solving skills. Here is everything you need to know about the newest attraction at the Mountain Mile in Pigeon Forge: How the Game Works The premise of Escapology is similar to most other escape rooms in the Smoky Mountains. Like countless others, Steve Goodman played a lot of video games during lockdown. At the time, the artist known as Kode9 and founder of the iconic Hyperdub label found himself imagining a game about Scotland and the country's plan to set up a colony in Panama back in the 1690s. Those thoughts later crystallised into Astro-Darien, an AV installation, "sonic fiction" and album that explores Scotland's space program and its past colonial ambitions through the lens of a video game. Speaking to RA on this week's episode of the Exchange, Goodman delves into the various facets of this project, including Escapology, his score to Astro-Darien. The album, released in July, is "like a film trailer that's giving you a little taste of various bits of story and strands of a kind of palette of sounds and a world," he explains. "So if you want, there's places to go deeper on it but if you are not interested in that, just treat it as a slightly weird dance music record." Science fiction aside, the Hyperdub founder also discusses the cyclical nature of music and why jungle is currently experiencing what many have called a revival. "Music doesn't move forward, it doesn't progress in a linear fashion," he describes, attributing that to "generational relationships." For more deep thoughts and Goodman's guide on hiking in the Scottish Highlands, listen to the conversation in full.

Lloyd Notley is the Chief Marketing Officer for Escapology, an escape room operator with more than 80 locations worldwide. In this interview, Lloyd walks us through the Escapology experience, and shares how visiting an escape room is a unique activity compared to many other entertainment offerings, because guests are tasked with solving clues and playing games in order to complete the puzzle. Lloyd shares how Escapology has even worked with guests to customize their experience, and in one instance changed the clues so that they would lead to a marriage proposal. Additionally, since an escape room isn't as repeatable as other types of attractions, Lloyd shares how Escapology influences repeat visitation as well as increases length of stay, and also stresses the importance of resolving service failures while the guest is still onsite, so that no matter what, they leave an advocate.

This week on Episode 523 of Priority One: the Roddenberry Foundation continues to promote a positive future, while Star Trek already wins some Emmys this year; in gaming, Star Trek Online takes us through a mirror darkly with “Reflections” and On Screen: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 6! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Wins at the Emmys By Elio Lleo On the heels of the Star Trek Day event, the franchise had cause for more celebration. During the two-day Creative Arts Emmy Event this last week, Star Trek walked away with two wins. First up, an Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single episode for Star Trek: Discovery's Season 3, “Su'kal.” Then, Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series for the Discovery episode, “If Memory Serves.” Now, Star Trek has been nominated for a total of 10 Emmys and the 75th Annual Awards show is set to air on Sunday, September 19th on CBS. So, let's keep our fingers crossed that Star Trek takes home several more! The 2321 Emmys will use photon torpedoes in place of play-off music. Image: Television Academy. Praise the Word of Rod By Elio Lleo As Gene Roddenberry's centennial celebrations continue, his son and CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, Rod Roddenberry, spoke with Forbes's Simon Thompson about the last 55 years and the future of Star Trek. With the first four original movies being remastered in 4K UHD, Rod remarks about how great it is to see how there's still a hunger for the original incarnations of Trek, saying: I think it makes Star Trek new again, especially for our new audiences. You've got the TV series now that has brought in a newer, younger demographic, and I think some people are resistant to look at older stuff. When it comes out in 4K, it looks fresh and new. I'm excited by them being introduced to Star Trek through the original movies. ...oh, UNITY, that's what the shirt says. Image: Paramount Pictures, via Forbes. What about NuTrek? Well, for Rod, it's all about ensuring that any of the recent incarnations stay true to the core of what his father's vision was all about saying: He wants people like J.J. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman and others to come along and do that. He also wanted to make sure that it remains Star Trek… [a]s long as they are continuing the tradition and the idea of it making you think. Having it entertain is extremely important, absolutely, but let's be considering different points of view on this as well. Rod goes on to discuss his own personal history with the franchise and how it was he grew to be so invested in his father's legacy. What Escapes In Vegas...Stays In...Hmmm… By Cat Hough If you're headed to Vegas anytime soon, you should definitely trek out the new Star Trek: Discovery-themed escape room launched by Escapology. The game is set during the third season of Discovery and has opened just in time to coincide with the 4th season premiere on Paramount+. https://player.vimeo.com/video/599794944/ Your role in the game is acting as a civilian engineer tasked with inspecting the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 as it undergoes the refit and upgrade to the 1031-A. However, sci-fi things happen during your inspection and Discovery collides with a quantum filament, causing major hull damage. The filaments' quantum resonance has also caused a polarity shift in the antimatter containment system, leading to a progressive degeneration in the containment field. If field strength falls below 15%, it will collapse, destroying the vessel and everyone aboard. Because sci-fi stuff happened, the main computer has closed emergency bulkheads across the ship and the turbolift control system has been disabled, leaving the bulk of the crew trapped and unable to begin repairs. In a convenient turn of events, your turbolift stopped near the Auxiliary Control section, so all you have to do is override its systems. At this point, you're the best option for helping Discovery and its crew avoid this disaster. Another reason to hate this design. Image: ViacomCBS, via CBR. Then, you, and your team, must escape the turbolift and communicate with a senior officer. You can save everyone if you can just re-establish communications and work together to repair the antimatter containment field before the strength falls below 15% which is projected to be in precisely 60 minutes time. Or that's how long you can book the room for: packages can be reserved at the Las Vegas Town Square location via the Escapology website and they currently show the price for 6 people is a little under $250. Festivity Will Now Commence By Thomas Reynolds and Rosco McQueen It's practically cliché at this point: the commercial Christmas season starts earlier every year, with candy canes and carols drowning out the trick-or-treaters and turkey dinners. But...what if December isn't merely encroaching on the other months? Isn't Christmas adding their celebrational distinctiveness to its own? Are they not being adapted to service Saint Nick? Yes, Christmas is assimilating the calendar–and your holidays, as they have been, are over. The Elf on the Shelf was the first to fall to the Collective; the angel tree topper is next. Image: Eaglemoss. Festivity may be irrelevant, but that hasn't stopped Eaglemoss from creating a grim messenger of holiday cheer. Invading Sector 001 on September 30th, the Borg Cube Advent Calendar brings 24 Trek accessories and gifts to all good little Trekkies. Socks, coasters, coffee mugs: each item included in the box also includes a short note with trivia and stories behind it. The Calendar sells for a considerable $149.95, so your bank account might look like New Providence if there's more than one Trekkie on your gift list. However, if you're after something a bit less “Sovereign-class”, then the California line of starships may be more your style. Eaglemoss has revealed the new XL model of the USS Cerritos. The model is 9.75” long and faithfully reproduces the Cerritos as it appeared in the first season. It's due in January 2022, so not quite in time for Christmas, but it will soon be joined by a model of the U.S.S. Titan. Both models were made using the actual VFX files used in Lower Decks, with both ships looking a little more animated than the usual line of starships–like they could have leapt from the screen to your living room. Ejectable warp core not included. Image: StarTrek.com Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Nearly 90% of the sales price on these charity bundle items will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, providing children with safe and fun places to grow and thrive, and offering mentoring life-enhancing programs. STO Takes Another Hard Look In the Mirror By Rosco McQueen With the conclusion of the Klingon Civil War, you would think Starfleet and members of the Alliance would have time for a little bit of exploration in Star Trek Online. Think again!! As a mirror universe admiral once said, “You haven't seen the last of me!” https://youtu.be/krG7YUY9JNw This newfound peace is short lived, as a new danger emerges from the Mirror Universe. A former enemy, Admiral Leeta (voiced by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Chase Masterson) is being hunted by the Mirror Universe's Kuumarke, a Terran Empire special agent. Players will team up with Admiral Leeta to stop Kuumarke and her Terran forces from using stolen information to bring destruction to the Prime Universe. Captains can investigate this looming threat in a new featured episode, Firewall, as well as participate in a new ground TFO, “Operation: Wolf.” Captains can also earn daily progress by playing the “Counterpoint” TFO and the episode “Jabberwocky” to work towards claiming the brand new T6 Mirror Gagarin-class Miracle Worker Battlecruiser. It's worth noting the first Captain on your account to claim the ship also receives 8x Terran Empire Agony Phaser Weapon Packs which each contain your choice of starship weapon type, and 3x Ultimate Tech Upgrade - Beam/Cannon/Projectile Tech which may be used to upgrade any starship weaponry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlkM4MrvSR0&feature=emb_title The new Terran ship has a 4 forward, and 4 aft weapon layout, compared to the regular 5/3 layout of the Prime Gagarin. It features a Lieutenant Commander Command Specialist Bridge Officer seat, and a universal console - the Destructive Protomatter Wave Projector. The wave projector targets multiple vessels, ripping apart their hulls. If they are destroyed then they send out a secondary shockwave, which may infect other targets in a chain reaction. Carriers With Crossover Appeal By Thomas Reynolds For years, STO was a preeminent source for new Trek stories–and what's a new Trek story without a ship? Cryptic's designs helped progress the post-Nemesis state of shipbuilding art, establishing distinct aesthetics for a modern 25th century. Now 2021's a different scene, with five different television series and other MMOs generating new ships of their own. That said, STO's contributions aren't going unnoticed. Yes. It's a cat carrier. Good job. Image: Cryptic Studios. The Continuing Mission blog for Star Trek Adventures recently posted fan-made guidelines for bringing Cryptic's Atrox- and Aspero-class carriers into the tabletop world. The unofficial STO-to-STA ship conversion assigns stats and traits based on their online counterparts, so you can drag-and-drop them into your campaign. It's an interesting look at RPG mechanic design, if that's your thing (and if you're listening to this podcast, that's a pretty safe guess). But it also reflects Cryptic's success in creating ships that become Trek characters in their own right. Quick Gaming News Roundup With Reflections taking us back into the Mirror Universe, STO's original ships are getting some fresh new looks--looks that could kill, that is. Ten of Cryptic's 25th century Federation designs, including the fan-favorite Pathfinder, have been touched up for the new arc, ranging from new materials to full-blown remasters. The Terran Empire is also getting their own versions of four ships–the Shran, Reliant, Andromeda, and Pathfinder–dressed to impress and distress. For fans of STO's story blog posts, this was all related in a private communique from Vice Admiral Hemphill of Starfleet. Or is it Lord Baron Vice Admiral of Starfleet? The answer: yes. If you launch STO through the Epic Games launcher - or if you want to get a free Terran Incursion Pack that includes a Terran Empire Sonic Phaser Stun Pistol, an Elite Services Starter Pack and a Small XP Boost, then you'd need to download the game and launch through Epic Games. The pack can be claimed once per account, all items are bound to account and you must complete the tutorial in order to claim it. The red tells you they're Evil ships, because they can't grow goatees. Image: Cryptic Studios.
Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Tonight we're talking about weird hobbies. And on the podcast itself we talk a lot more about this than we do in these notes. We even talk about WHY people have hobbies. What I like is when people who don't even realize that their hobbies are weird or maybe just embarrassing. Coburg Banks has a list of weird hobbies people actually put on their resume, and while they aren't weird? It is a bit strange to put them down for a potential employer. We're talking about things like. “I like sex.” “Drinking.” “Hacking.” “Farmville.” “Talking.” “Honestly, I like doing nothing.” “Escapology.” “Time travel.” “Snake skin collecting.” “Arguing with people online.” “Ferret racing.” “Stalking celebrities.” “Being awesome.” “I have 14 cats.” “Netflix n' chill.” “Crash dieting.” And out in the regular world, there is the hobby of mooing. There is actually a moo-la-palooza in Wisconsin where people try to sound like a cow. People also collect in-flight sickness bags, navel fluff, and ecstasy pills. A guy has done this for two decades. And they throw their wives around. There's even the pretty cool hobby of Toy Voyaging, as explained by Stupid Hobby is “ToyVoyagers are traveling toys that are passed from person to person. To continue its journey, toys can be released into the wild for somebody to find. Their travels are tracked on a website. Each toy carries a unique identification number on a tag. A message on the tag encourages anyone who comes into contact with it to go to the website and update its Travelog with photographs." But our fave? It's got to be guerrilla gardening. Listen to the podcast and find out why. :) Resources https://www.coburgbanks.co.uk/blog/friday-funnies/50-strange-hobbies/ https://www.toptenz.net/top-10-strangest-hobbies-in-the-world.php https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/15-strange-hobbies-around-world-7345374 NEW BOOK ALERT! A quick blurb, we are back with only one edition this March, because as I mentioned before, with moving home without the internet for 10 days, taking time unpacking everything, setting out the studio/ office up again & going through over 1000 emails, we haven’t had the time to compile our usual two. Had a problem with the software I’m using to do the mixing, their upgrade buggered everything up, now with no mouse control for Mac which is useless, saying this was demo & wanted another 80 dollars to register it. Found a free one quickly but it’s going to take time to sort it out, didn’t get round to figuring out how to mix the music with the audio text so no intro from Karen. Kiki is probably best known on the UK cabaret circuit for introducing the world to Furlesque - his quirky puppet burlesque creations. These routines have made him a regular at high profile burlesque events.A natural performer and attention seeker, Kiki had his first regular paid performance job at the age of 8, and has polished and refined his craft a little since then. He has trained in mime with celebrated physical theatre tutor Desmond Jones, clowning with the world famous Angela de Castro, puppetry with The Little Angel Theatre and circus skills at Circus Space. While all of these have proved invaluable, nothing has taught Kiki more than years and years of experimentation in front of real world audiences. After many years of performing short cabaret routines, in 2013 Kiki launched his first hour long solo clown show. A brief preview of the show at Madame Jojos in February met with an enthusiastic audience response, and the run of the show at Brighton Fringe attracted good audiences and 5 star reviews, followed by a successful run in Grimsby. A short story of four showmen William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917) was an American soldier, bison hunter and showman. He was born in the Iowa Territory (now the U.S. state of Iowa), in Le Claire but lived several years in Canada before his family moved to the Kansas Territory. Buffalo Bill received the Medal of Honor in 1872 for service to the US Army as a scout. One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill became famous for the shows he organized with cowboy themes, which he toured in Great Britain and Europe as well as the United States. 19 year old william cody At the age of 14, Cody was struck by gold fever, but on his way to the gold fields, he met an agent for the Pony Express. He signed with them, and after building several stations and corrals, Cody was given a job as a rider, which he kept until he was called home to his sick mother's bedside.[1] Cody earned the nickname by killing 4,280 American bison (commonly known as buffalo) in eighteen months, (1867–1868).[ In 1889, the show toured Europe, and in 1890 Cody met Pope Leo XIII. He set up an independent exhibition near the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, which greatly contributed to his popularity. It vexed the promoters of the fair, who had first rejected his request to participate. Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 – April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, scam artist and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxesand for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.[1] Late in 1860, the Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng, came out of retirement (they needed more money to send their numerous children to college). The Twins had had a touring career on their own and went to live on a North Carolina plantation with their families and slaves, under the name of "Bunker." They appeared at Barnum's Museum for six weeks. Also in 1860, Barnum introduced the "man-monkey" William Henry Johnson, a microcephalic black dwarf who spoke a mysterious language created by Barnum. Jenny Lind Harry Houdini (born Erik Weisz in Budapest, later Ehrich Weiss or Harry Weiss; March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926) was an American stunt performer, noted for his sensationalescape acts The mahogany and metal cell featured a glass front, through which audiences could clearly see Houdini. The stocks would be locked to the top of the cell, and a curtain would conceal his escape. In the earliest version of the Torture Cell, a metal cage was lowered into the cell, and Houdini was enclosed inside that. While making the escape more difficult
