Cryptoplatform Knaken is failliet verklaard door de rechtbank in Rotterdam, na een verzoek van het Openbaar Ministerie. Volgens justitie is zeven miljoen euro van klantgeld verdwenen. De rechter stelde vast dat Knaken is opgehouden zijn klanten uit te betalen, dat klanten al langer dan een maand niet bij hun geld konden, en dat er te weinig geld over is om iedereen terug te betalen. Dat was voor de rechtbank reden genoeg om het bedrijf te sluiten. Wat er intern bij Knaken precies is misgegaan, is nog niet duidelijk. De FIOD en het OM zijn betrokken, dus dit speelt zich ook in de strafrechtelijke sfeer af. Zeven miljoen euro raakt niet zomaar kwijt door normale bedrijfsvoering. Klanttegoeden hadden apart moeten staan bij een stichting, afgeschermd van de reguliere bedrijfsactiviteiten. Daarnaast speelt er nog iets: Knaken had geen vergunning van de AFM, en zat daar al achttien maanden middenin. De officiële overgangstermijn in Nederland was zes maanden, waarna bedrijven zonder vergunning in een soort blessuretijd belandden. Bij Knaken duurde die blessuretijd uiteindelijk twaalf maanden. De AFM had wat mij betreft veel eerder kunnen concluderen dat Knaken kansloos was, en het bedrijf beheerst moeten sluiten. Uiteindelijk deed de AFM zelf aangifte, maar dat gebeurde pas laat. Knaken zelf vindt het faillissement niet de beste oplossing. Het bedrijf stelde voor de beschikbare tegoeden zelf te verdelen onder de klanten, maar de rechter geloofde niet dat Knaken dat op eigen houtje kon afwikkelen. Een curator gaat nu uitzoeken waar het geld is gebleven en wat er nog over is. Een deel kan mogelijk worden teruggevonden, maar het gaat hier ook om crypto: transacties kunnen in principe niet worden teruggedraaid. Zijn er daadwerkelijk strafbare feiten gepleegd, dan kan het geld ook gewoon weg zijn. De zaak is dus niet gesloten. De curator zoekt civiel verder uit hoeveel geld er is en wat daarvan terugkomt, en ook het strafrechtelijk onderzoek krijgt een vervolg. Er is officieel sprake van een watertekort in Nederland, meldt het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat. De Landelijke Coördinatiecommissie Waterverdeling adviseert opschaling naar het niveau van watertekort, waardoor overheden en drinkwaterbedrijven nieuwe maatregelen voorbereiden om het beschikbare water te verdelen en de inzet van stuwen en extra pompen te onderzoeken. New York becomes the first US state to impose a moratorium on building large-scale data centres. The measure, announced by New York's Governor Kathy Horchul, applies to all centres using 50MW or more of power and will remain in force for a year. Hoe moeten we in vredesnaam indruk maken op Poetin als onze Nederlandse overheid niet eens raad weet met vechtende asielzoekers in Ter Apel en straatterreur van jonge allochtonen in Amsterdam en Zandvoort? Hoe komt het dat onze politici, ambtenaren en politiecommissarissen niet verder komen dan wat schuiven met papier? Wierd zegt de afgelopen tijd verder teleurgesteld te zijn geraakt in de onmacht, de onwil en de machteloosheid van de boven ons gestelden om te doen wat de meerderheid van Nederland al tientallen jaren wil, zoals het beperken van immigratie en asiel en het grenzen stellen aan de islamisering. In de uren voor dit videogesprek was Wierd op reportage in Vegelinsoord in Friesland, waar hij getroffen werd door de bijna ideale plattelandswereld daar, die veel lijkt op het vroegere, maar in ‘parallelle samenlevingen' verdwijnende Nederland in steden als Amsterdam en Rotterdam. Syp probeert Wierd nog een hart onder de riem te steken, met de vaststelling dat de politici die blind blijven ijveren voor ‘diversiteit', ‘multiculturele samenleving' en graag flirten met islam daar een steeds hogere prijs voor betalen door steeds minder Kamerzetels. Bovendien is links niet meer zo overtuigd van het eigen morele gelijk, waardoor zelfs het begrip ‘links' in het defensief is geraakt. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat links alleen nog de baas is van de overheidsinstellingen: de ministeries, de adviesraden en de rechters. Die afbrokkeling van moralistisch en irreëel links zou toch tot meer verstandig beleid moeten kunnen leiden. Maar probleem is natuurlijk wel dat rechts verdeeld is en/of buiten spel staat, al dan niet (gedeeltelijk) door eigen toedoen. Het verbod van staatssecretaris Willemijn Aerdts op de overname van DigiD-beheerder Solvinity door het Amerikaanse Kyndryl blijft overeind. Dat heeft de rechtbank in Rotterdam dinsdag bepaald. De rechter stelt dat het verbod ongedaan maken tot onomkeerbare gevolgen kan leiden. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. Aerdts verbood de overname van Solvinity door Kyndryl in mei omdat het te riskant zou zijn. Gegevens van Nederlandse burgers zouden namelijk ongezien door de Amerikaanse overheid opgevraagd en eventueel misbruikt kunnen worden als het bedrijf in Amerikaanse handen zou komen. Solvinity maakte samen met aandeelhouder Vitruvian Partners al bezwaar tegen dat besluit, maar wilde er via de rechter voor zorgen dat het niet geldig zou zijn tot de beslissing over het bezwaar van Aerdts bekend wordt. Volgens de staatssecretaris komt die beslissing in september. Lotte is zelfstandig ontwerper binnen Studio de Blieck, het bedrijf dat ze samen met haar moeder runt. Op haar negentiende begon ze in het vak, zonder formele opleiding. There are two stories here, their opposition is part of a theme.  Erasmus, the great Erasmus , Erasmus of Rotterdam was even more a product of the Devotio Moderna than was Luther.  Most of his young education was by the Brethren of the Common Life or their imitators.I am Groote.Last episode I called him a Satirist.  Of course he was much more than that.  You've heard of him, but are unlikely to have read any of his full length works, unless you are a specialist in the time.And yet he had great influence of his period, being perhaps the highest status intellectual of the period.   He was the writer of 1 in 3 books purchased during the 1530s.  And as he wrote Suleiman the Magnificent was first overcoming Hungary and then moved on to the Siege of Vienna.Erasmus wrote In Praise of Folly, which we discuss in the episode, while folly is being acted out in Hungary, to a tragic end.Hungary was well able to defend the West from the Ottoman during the days of Matthias Corvinus.  But on his death, short sighted magnates pursued a foolish policy, leading to their defeat.  After an absolutely heroic defense of Vienna, Suleiman was defeated, losing 20,000 men in the retreat.   Oddly enough, this is about the same number of boys and girls taken as slaves by the Ottomans on this campaign.  You want your civilization to be so powerful you do not have to suffer slavers.

Long friends and colleagues, Ross and Michel come on to primarily discuss the sensitive subject matter behind Ross’ latest film, “Remake” The film begins a theatrical engagement at Film Forum in NYC on 7/10/2026. He eventually turns to his archive of home movies — an afternoon trapping crayfish with his son Adrian, age 4; helping with homework, age 11; discussing career plans with his son, age 24. To what extent did his camera affect their relationship when Adrian was alive? To what extent does it define that relationship now that he is gone? Meanwhile, an effort to adapt McElwee's first feature, “Sherman's March”, into a work of fiction lurches along, giving the filmmaker another perspective from which to meditate on movie making and mortality. Ross McElwee is a documentary filmmaker from Charlotte, North Carolina currently living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. McElwee has made ten feature-length films. “Sherman's March” won Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and was chosen for preservation by the U.S Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000 as a “historically significant American motion picture.” Bright Leaves premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight. McElwee’s In Paraguay premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2008, and he returned to Venice in 2011 to premiere Photographic Memory. McElwee has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the American Film Institute. He has twice been awarded fellowships in filmmaking by the National Endowment for the Arts and production grants from the LEF foundation. McElwee received the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival's Career Award in 2007 and the Pennebaker Award for his career in 2023. In 2024, the French Ministry of Culture awarded McElwee the rank of Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres. McElwee was Professor of the Practice of Filmmaking in the Department of Art, Film and Visual Studies at Harvard beginning in 2003 until his retirement in 2024. He is now a Research Professor, Emeritus in the AFVS Department. About Michel Negroponte Michel Negroponte is an award winning filmmaker who has been making feature length documentaries for more than 30 years. He was born and raised in New York City, and studied filmmaking with Richard Leacock and Ed Pincus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s. In addition to making his own films, he has freelanced on countless films for HBO, PBS, the BBC, and Channel Four. He has also worked with independent filmmakers like Ross McElwee, Doug Block, Lisa Crafts, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, Christine Choy, Dick Rogers, John Marshall and Al Maysles. His films include SPACE COAST (1979), RESIDENT EXILE (1981), SILVER VALLEY (1984), JUPITER’S WIFE (1994), NO ACCIDENT (1996), W.I.S.O.R. (2000), METHADONIA (2005) and I’M DANGEROUS WITH LOVE (2009). His work has been shown at the Sundance Film Festival, The New York Film Festival, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and in festivals in Berlin, Rotterdam, Vancouver, and Japan. Negroponte has also taught in the graduate and undergraduate film programs at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and Temple University. Recently, he helped create a new graduate program in documentary filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, which opened in September, 2009. He is part of the faculty there as well.

Het Openbaar Ministerie vraagt de rechtbank in Rotterdam om het cryptoplatform Knaken en de daaraan verbonden stichting failliet te verklaren, na signalen over een 'zeer zorgwekkende situatie' van toezichthouder AFM en doorzoekingen door de FIOD waarbij digitale gegevensdragers in beslag zijn genomen en beslag is gelegd op vermogen van het bedrijf. Knaken ging begin juni plotseling op zwart, waardoor duizenden gebruikers geen toegang meer hebben tot hun cryptotegoeden. Woordvoerder Fred Wickel van het meldpunt Knaken Collectief zegt namens de naar schatting 3.000 tot 4.500 gedupeerden dat hij geen aanwijzingen had voor mogelijke misstanden en dat het huidige contact met het bestuur van Knaken ‘erg positief’ verloopt. Volgens hem is de intentie van Knaken om tot een oplossing en nette afhandeling te komen, waarbij klanten in ieder geval een uitkering van hun tegoeden zouden moeten krijgen, al is nog onbekend hoe hoog die compensatie kan uitvallen; het collectief groeit volgens Wickel ‘per uur’ en wil zoveel mogelijk gedupeerden bundelen. Als de rechtbank het faillissementsverzoek van het OM toewijst, komt er een curator die de boedel van Knaken beheert en met wie het collectief de onderhandelingen zal voortzetten. Dan wordt duidelijk in welke volgorde schuldeisers aanspraak kunnen maken op resterende middelen en welke positie het Knaken Collectief inneemt bij de verdeling. At Euroanaesthesia in Rotterdam, TopMedTalk hosts Andy Cumpsty and Kate Leslie speak with Denise Veelo Professor of Anesthesiology at the Amsterdam University Medical Center and Bernd Saugel Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in the Center of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, about two JAMA blood-pressure trials published on the same day. Veelo describes a 3,500-patient, two-center randomized trial comparing usual care (MAP 65) with more intensive, risk-stratified higher MAP thresholds (70/80/90) using a functional recovery primary outcome, stopped early for futility. Saugel outlines the 1,300-patient IMPROVE trial in 15 German centers, individualizing the lower intervention threshold to each patient's preoperative nighttime MAP versus routine MAP 65, with a 7-day composite outcome; no significant difference was found and event rates were ~30%. You can have zero cysts on your ovaries and still be diagnosed with PCOS. Wild, right? But that's exactly how loose this diagnosis really is.I sat down for this episode with Dr. Angela Potter, a PCOS and fertility specialist who works with women every day who hear the exact same thing I hear all the time: "Your labs are fine, here's Clomid, good luck."If you've been told you have PCOS, you've wondered if you might, or you've just been collecting random symptoms for years with nobody connecting the dots, this one's for you.Here's a glimpse of what we get into:Why PCOS can look completely different from one woman to the next, and why "one path for everyone" was never going to workThe "biological safety" signal your brain sends to your ovaries, and the everyday things that might be quietly sending the opposite signalWhy "your labs are fine" doesn't mean nothing's going on, and what that conversation usually missesWhy "just go low carb" is some of the most common PCOS advice out there, and why it can backfireWhat egg quality really has to do with timing, and why that matters before jumping into a medicated cyclePCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome, and the name is a little misleading. You don't actually need cysts on your ovaries to have it. Doctors look at three things, called the Rotterdam criteria: ovulation issues, elevated androgens like testosterone (which can show up as acne, extra hair growth, or stubborn weight around your belly), and cysts on the ovaries. Two out of three of those, and that's your diagnosis.Here's where it gets interesting. Because PCOS is a syndrome and not one specific thing, three women can both technically "have PCOS" and look completely different. One might be dealing with insulin issues. Another might have an adrenal driver. Another might be dealing with inflammation. And yet the standard medical playbook treats all of these women the same way: a few rounds of ovulation induction medication, and if that doesn't work, on to IVF.Dr. Potter put it so well. She said the fertility algorithm for PCOS is linear, basically one path for everyone, and that path doesn't account for the fact that your PCOS and my PCOS could be driven by completely different things. No wonder so many women feel like the system is failing them. Because in a lot of ways, it is.So we went deeper into something I talk about all the time, which is that your hormones are never the whole story. Your estrogen and testosterone aren't just randomly out of whack for no reason. There's something underneath creating that picture, and a huge piece of it comes down to whether or not your body feels safe.Your brain is constantly scanning for threats, the same way it would have hundreds of thousands of years ago. If your body senses there isn't enough food coming in, or your blood sugar is all over the place, or your nervous system is stuck in stress mode, your brain's response is to shut down ovulation. Not because it's broken. Because it's trying to protect you.This is why so many women with PCOS get told to "just go low carb" or "just lose weight," and then feel even worse, or stay completely stuck. If your body is already in a stress response, restricting food sends an even louder signal that things aren't safe. The research doesn't actually back up low carb as the magic fix for PCOS, but it's everywhere, so women try it, it doesn't work, and then they think something is wrong with them. The advice was never built for your specific body in the first place.We also got into what happens when someone's told to do a medicated cycle without addressing any of this first. Your body might be saying "not safe to ovulate" for a real reason, and a medication can override that signal for one cycle, but it doesn't change the underlying picture. Dr. Potter talked about egg quality and how it takes about 90 days to develop a healthy egg. So if you go into a medicated cycle without those building blocks in place, you're already starting from behind. This isn't an anti-medication conversation. You can feel it when an act is more than a list of tricks, but why does that feeling happen? I sit down with Menno van Dyke, artistic director of Circusstad Festival in Rotterdam, to dissect one of my favorite examples of contemporary circus craft: Juggling Tango, his long running collaboration with his wife Emily, a dancer. What starts as a conversation about career beginnings quickly turns into a deep dive on how showmanship, choreography, and structure turn technique into story. Menno shares how he moved from a youth circus in Amsterdam to Fratellini in Paris, including an ambitious plan to juggle on a galloping horse and the practical reasons it didn't survive the real world of venues, touring, and contracts. From there we track the shift toward building a portable solo juggling act, winning at Monte Carlo's young artist festival, and working across traditional circus and the German variety scene. Then we get granular on the creative process behind Juggling Tango: choosing Astor Piazzolla, building a solo that transforms into a duo, and solving the brutal problem of making eye contact while keeping juggling solid. We talk timing, personal space, risk management, hidden spare props, and what happens when a ball drops but the music and your partner's choreography won't wait.
