Jules showed up to the recipe section of this episode with a drink in each hand, fully convinced the Brown Derby was a Kentucky Derby cocktail. She was wrong - but her enthusiasm was entirely justified. It turns out the Brown Derby has one of the stranger origin stories in cocktail history: invented in London, stolen by a Minneapolis greeting card tycoon, falsely credited to Hollywood, ignored for seventy years, and then resurrected by the craft cocktail revival as if none of that had happened. Brad walks through the whole beautiful mess, while Jules delivers an exceptional side-by-side breakdown of bourbon whiskey profiles that makes this essential listening for anyone who's ever stood in a liquor store aisle wondering what difference it actually makes. This episode is titled "Eating in season in March."As March arrived, the first tentative signs of spring emerged—longer days, melting snow, and the promise of renewal after winter's grip. The vernal equinox heralds a shift, and with it, the produce world begins to awaken. While hearty winter roots and storage crops still linger, early spring arrivals like asparagus and artichokes make their debut, often from warmer regions like California, bringing vibrant green freshness to markets. In the Northeast, local harvests remain limited this early, so many of March's stars arrive via longer supply chains, yet their peak-season quality shines through. This transitional month bridges the end of citrus dominance with the first tender shoots of the new season, inviting us to blend comforting roasts with lighter, brighter dishes that anticipate warmer weather.Fruits in March continue to draw heavily from winter citrus, now at their sweetest and juiciest after months on the tree, alongside tropical options that feel like a preview of summer. Blood oranges, with their striking maroon flesh and berry-like notes, reach a crescendo—select heavy fruits with taut, richly colored skin free of soft spots, store them in the refrigerator's crisper for up to two weeks, and use their vivid segments in salads, drizzle the juice over yogurt, or reduce into a glossy glaze for roasted meats. Grapefruit, often sweeter now, feel plump and heavy when ripe; refrigerate them whole and enjoy them halved with a sprinkle of sugar, or supreme them into ceviche for a tart wake-up. Kiwi, fuzzy and nutrient-dense, yields slightly to pressure when ripe—keep at room temperature until ripe, then chill and slice into fruit bowls or blend into green smoothies for a vitamin C punch. Mandarins and tangerines, easy-peeling and seedless in wide varieties, choose firm ones without bruises; store loosely in a bowl or in the fridge, and pop them as snacks or scatter them over grain bowls. Pineapple, entering peak from March onward, select ones with golden hues, fragrant bases, and a slight give—store upside down at room temperature for a day to distribute sugars, then refrigerate cut pieces and grill rings for dessert, or chop into salsa for a tropical twist.Turning to vegetables, asparagus heralds spring's arrival with slender, tender spears that snap crisply—look for bright green stalks with tightly closed tips, avoiding any limp or woody ones; wrap the ends in a damp paper towel and refrigerate upright in a jar of water like flowers, for up to a week. Steam or roast them simply with olive oil and lemon to highlight their grassy sweetness, or shave raw into salads for crunch. Leafy greens like arugula, spinach, and mustard greens emerge tender—opt for crisp, unwilted bunches; keep them in damp towels in the fridge and toss them into salads or wilt them into soups. Beets and parsnips carry over from winter—firm, smooth roots store best in the crisper; roast beets for earthy salads or puree parsnips into silky soups. Leeks, mild and oniony, rinse thoroughly to remove grit; choose firm stalks, store chilled, and slice into potato soups or braise as a side.Artichokes, globe-shaped and spiky, demand firm, heavy globes with tightly packed leaves—trim stems and store in the fridge wrapped in plastic; steam whole and dip leaves in garlic butter, or stuff hearts into pasta for an elegant side. Broccoli and broccolini thrive in cooler weather—choose firm, dark-green heads with no yellowing; store in a perforated bag in the crisper, and roast florets with garlic or stir-fry tender stems for quick meals. Brussels sprouts, if still available, pick tight, vibrant ones; refrigerate and halve for roasting with balsamic to caramelize their edges. Send us a textStart with a Grapefruit Rose martini and a question that's equal parts cheeky and practical: how do you find, become, or thrive with a Disney sugar mama or sugar daddy? We take Valentine's energy to Disneyland and beyond, unpacking the social signals of luxury park life—top-tier passes, DVC contracts that stretch across coasts, Minnie Vans as default, and the kind of confidence that comes from knowing you'll never wait more than twenty minutes for anything. From Sweethearts' Nite to late-night walk-ons, we explore what it really feels like to skip “gen pop” and step into concierge mode. Think character breakfasts as a morning ritual, signature meals like Victoria & Albert's as date-night baseline, and premium events that turn a random Tuesday into a memory. We also get honest about the rare air—Club 33 whispers, Golden Oak sightings, and those around-the-world Disney tours that stitch every park into one epic story. It's not just fantasy; there are real cues, communities, and rhythms that define this level of Disney. But perks alone don't make the magic. We map the duties that keep the vibe frictionless: mastering ADRs 60 days out, holding lines so your partner arrives right on time, knowing the perfect pool chairs, and capturing photos that hit favorite angles and light. Add thoughtful shopping instincts—loungefly drops, limited pins, spirit jerseys—and you become the plus-one who makes every splurge feel effortless. Under the humor sits a simple truth: generosity is a love language, and gratitude is how you say it back.If you love Disney, crave smarter park days, and enjoy a little playful strategy with your romance, this one's for you. Real Life Pharmacology - Pharmacology Education for Health Care Professionals

On this podcast episode, I discuss important practice pearls and important test prep information about statins. Statins are cornerstone agents for ASCVD risk reduction, so test questions often focus on indication, intensity, and monitoring. Health care professionals should quickly identify statin intensity: high-intensity therapy (atorvastatin 40–80 mg, rosuvastatin 20–40 mg) lowers LDL by ~50% and is indicated for patients with clinical ASCVD, LDL ≥190 mg/dL, or high-risk diabetes patients age 40–75. Moderate-intensity statins (e.g., atorvastatin 10–20 mg, simvastatin 20–40 mg) are commonly tested for primary prevention. Statin-associated muscle symptoms range from myalgias (most common, normal CK) to rare but serious rhabdomyolysis (marked CK elevation and AKI). Risk factors include high doses, advanced age, hypothyroidism, drug interactions, and renal impairment. If muscle symptoms occur, stopping the statin, ruling out secondary causes (like hypothyroidism), and rechallenging with a lower dose or different statin is often the correct clinical approach. Drug interactions and statin selection frequently separate good from great test-takers. Lipophilic statins (simvastatin, atorvastatin, lovastatin) are more prone to muscle effects and CYP3A4 interactions, while hydrophilic statins (pravastatin, rosuvastatin) are preferred in patients with prior intolerance or complex drug regimens. Grapefruit juice, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, and certain calcium channel blockers raise simvastatin levels—often prompting dose limits or avoidance on exams. If LDL goals aren’t met, adding ezetimibe or a PCSK9 inhibitor is the next evidence-based step. Be sure to check out our free Top 200 study guide – a 31 page PDF that is yours for FREE! FLAVORS + kNOWLEDGE

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2026 5:18

Even in the middle of winter, you can find plenty of hearty roots, leafy greens, and bright citrus to add warmth and flavor to your meals. Imagine visiting the farmers' market and seeing beets ready for roasting, and Brussels sprouts that turn crispy and sweet in the oven. These foods are more than just ingredients; they show how nature keeps growing through the cold to give us great taste and nutrition when we need it most. Here are some of February's best produce, along with tips for picking, storing, and using them in everyday meals. Citrus fruits are at their best now, bringing color and flavor to winter days. Grapefruits, especially the ruby red ones from Florida and California, are sweet and tangy. Choose ones that feel heavy and have smooth, unmarked skin. Store them in the fridge's crisper drawer for up to a month. Try adding grapefruit segments to a salad with mixed greens and feta, or broil halves with brown sugar for a warm breakfast side. Blood oranges are another highlight, with deep red flesh and a hint of raspberry flavor. Pick ones that give a little when pressed and avoid any with soft spots. They last a few days at room temperature or longer in the fridge. Use their juice to color cake frostings or blend into smoothies for a bright start to the day. Mandarins, including clementines and sumo varieties, are easy to peel and very sweet. Look for firm fruit without wrinkles, and keep it in a bowl on the counter or in the fridge. You can candy the peels for a treat or add segments to stir-fries for a citrus kick. Kumquats are small and unique because you can eat the whole fruit, both the sweet skin and tart inside. Choose plump, bright orange kumquats, store them in the fridge, and slice them into salads or bake them into muffins. Pummelos are larger and milder than grapefruits, with a gentle tartness. Pick heavy ones and keep them in the fridge. They work well in any recipe that uses grapefruit, like over yogurt for dessert. Kiwis are also in season, with fuzzy skin and a sweet-tart flavor. They should give a little when ripe. Store at room temperature until ready, then refrigerate. Kiwis are great for marinating meats or adding to fruit salads. Pears round out the fruit selection; check for ripeness by pressing gently at the neck. Let them ripen at room temperature, then use them in poached desserts or smoothies. February's vegetables are perfect for hearty soups and roasts. Broccoli should have firm, green heads. Store it wrapped in a damp towel in the fridge, and steam, roast, or add to pasta. Brussels sprouts should be tight and green; refrigerate and roast with olive oil and salt, or shred raw for slaws. Cabbage is long-lasting and versatile. Look for firm heads with crisp leaves, store them in the crisper, and use them in roasts or sauerkraut. Cauliflower should be firm and white; keep it in the fridge and use it for rice or mash it as a potato substitute. Kale needs fresh, unwilted leaves; store in a perforated bag in the fridge, and massage with oil for salads or add to soups. Beets should be firm and smooth; store in the fridge without the greens, which you can sauté. Roast beets for salads or purees. Carrots should be straight and bright; keep them in a bag in the fridge, and use them in muffins or stews. Leeks need to be rinsed well to remove grit; pick firm stalks, store chilled, and add to casseroles or soups. Parsnips are sweeter than carrots; choose smaller ones, store them cool, and roast with meats. Winter squash, like butternut, should be heavy and unblemished; store in the pantry, roast the seeds for snacks, and bake the flesh into soups. Choosing seasonal produce supports local farmers and delivers the best quality with a lower environmental impact. The doctor states that rosuvastatin, a newer statin, is long-acting, and that taking it at night may not be as necessary as in earlier statin types.  The doctor then states that rosuvastatin was also developed to avoid the interactions between statins and grapefruit, and that small amounts of grapefruit may be ok for Kevin to consume.PLEASE NOTE: The information provided in this podcast is for general educational, scientific, and informational purposes only and is not intended as, and should not be treated as, medical or other professional advice for any particular individual or individuals.  Consult with your doctor before makng alterations to medicines or foods that may interact with them.Be a part of advancing science by participating in clinical research.Have a question for Dr. Koren? The November 4 edition of the AgNet News Hour was a celebration of California citrus, featuring Jesse Silva, Vice President of Kings River Packing, who joined hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill to share an upbeat outlook on the 2024–25 season. The longtime Central Valley leader, now in its eighth generation of family farming, is off to what Silva called “a high-quality, high-demand year” for California citrus. Silva explained that Kings River Packing and its affiliated companies, including Cobblestone Fruit and Gyra Packing, are operating at full capacity across their four facilities in Sanger, Reedley, and Orosi. “We're running 24/7 right now,” he said. “The fruit looks great, and the market is strong — especially for early navels, lemons, and mandarins.” Founded in the 1860s, Kings River's legacy began when the Hazelton family planted the first orange trees in Fresno County. Nearly 150 years later, Silva said the ninth generation is preparing to carry that heritage forward. “We're still family owned and operated, and that's something we're very proud of,” he said. “Every box we ship represents decades of hard work, and our goal is to keep that tradition alive.” Silva described a season that's running ahead of schedule thanks to ideal growing conditions in both the desert and Central Valley regions. Grapefruit, lemons, and mandarins from the desert gave the company an early jump, and now the focus shifts northward. “Our early navels are maturing beautifully,” he said. “The sugar is coming on strong, the color is fantastic, and consumers are ready for California fruit.” He also reported that this year's market fundamentals look favorable for growers. “The quality is high, imported volumes were lower than expected, and demand is strong both domestically and internationally,” Silva said. “Right now, pricing is solid across navels, mandarins, and lemons. The retailers are excited.” Beyond the fields, Silva discussed the company's continued investment in organic citrus, now entering its third full year of production. “It's still a niche, but it's growing steadily,” he said. “We're proud to be a year-round organic citrus supplier in oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.” Silva credited early fall rains for boosting color and size without harming the crop. “The timing was perfect,” he said. “Rain improves sizing, and the cool nights are bringing on that rich orange color everyone loves.” Papagni and McGill also highlighted Kings River's partnership with Farmsco USA, which sources citrus from Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Morocco to complement California's growing season. “It keeps our partners stocked year-round,” Silva explained. “It's about consistency — giving our customers California quality all twelve months of the year.” As the holidays approach, Silva encouraged Californians to buy local. “When you see Kings River on the label, you're supporting family farmers,” he said. “That means a lot to us — and it means you're getting the best citrus anywhere.”

In this episode, I explain cortisol and science-based protocols for properly setting your cortisol rhythm, which can significantly increase your daytime energy, focus, mood, and stress resilience, while also improving your sleep quality. Most people mistakenly think cortisol is bad, and many assume their levels are too high, when in fact many health and performance challenges simply stem from a disrupted cortisol rhythm. Getting your cortisol rhythm right can be transformative for your health and performance. I outline behavioral, nutritional, and supplement-based strategies to raise or lower your cortisol levels at the appropriate times of day and night. I also provide specific protocols for overcoming burnout. For this episode we're joined by the excellent Val Mabbs, who talks to us about writing for Record Mirror in the late '60s and early '70s. We start with our guest's early life as a mod in Hertfordshire – and her memories of seeing the Who/the High Numbers in 1964/5. Val then explains how she got her foot in the door at the Mirror and recalls colleagues such as Norman Jopling, Charlie Gillett and Lon Goddard, not forgetting Peter Jones, the editor who first spotted her potential as an interviewer.  Val talks us through her encounters with such legends as Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Marc Bolan (not to mention Status Quo, for whose double-denim "outfits" she can take indirect credit). En passant we hear clips from Chris Welch's 2005 audio interview with John Walker, surely the handsomest of the three Walker "Brothers" he first met in 1965. After Barney gives a nod to the week's free feature about Bob Dylan "going electric" at 1965's Newport Folk Festival, Val resumes her story and brings us up to the present day. We also pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne and discuss the real origins of heavy metal. He also discusses brewing with feijoa (pineapple guava) in a kettle sour, flagship beers like the strawberry basil Hefeweizen and peach witbier, the challenges of sourcing fruit with consistent flavor from one purveyor to the next. After the beer break, Phil introduces Bicycle Fire, a fruited Kveik ale brewed with hearth-grilled grapefruit and white pepper. He explains the advantages of Kveik yeast, including fast fermentation and high-temperature tolerance, and then breaks down Sláinte, a collaboration Irish Red Ale with Parlor Pizza, and shares how collaborations come together at the brewery.
